I see that by our unguarded thoughts we make ourselves unhappy in the present and in the future. With practice, I have been able gradually to catch myself sooner and sooner. Thank you.

That is a great way you put it: "gradually catch myself sooner and sooner".
And as the years of training go by, we eventually start catching ourselves so soon that we are ahead of the game, and can watch it unfold without getting baited into playing it.

Thanks Bhante, I'm in the exact same situation as the person asking this question and I also specifically give in to worry and doubt after lapsing, I will focus on that too now

Hey bhantes. I have an important question I’m currently practicing towards the goal. I notice that when I’m off from work and alone for a few days my mind begins to calm down. But when I’m back at my serving job working downtown it’s like I’m being harassed by unwholesome states. Any advice?

If I may, I can give advice.
When we are working, we have to think about our work, it is inevitable, otherwise we fail at doing it properly. But then, worldly and unwholesome states will also have to enter the mind to some degree. The homeless life (becoming a monk) was encouraged by the Buddha precisely because it is the ideal for practicing towards the goal. (A renunciate doesn't have to interact so much with the hustle and bustle of the town or city, so his mind doesn't become so polluted). If, however, you don't feel ready to renounce the lay life completely, see if you have options to change job to something where you don't have to interact with people so much. That helps a lot with the issue you are describing.
I personally work as a cleaner. It is great for practice because I get to work alone without anyone chatting with me. And it is not the most attractive job to have, so you don't have to struggle to find such a job. It probably isn't the most well-paying, but my use of money has gone down to an extremely low level anyway, since desire is drying up due to the practice. I basically don't have any expenses anymore, apart from the basic ones. And I also support the Sangha financially. I live as a hermit at the edge of the village I work in, interacting very little with society. Using my free time to study and practice the Suttas, I have with this method made a lot of progress the last 7 years.
Good luck with your practice 🙏
