The opening music is from Julius Fucik's "March (or Entrance) of the Gladiators". Many people connect this piece with the circus, which is why it's so appropriate here. Great song written by Leo Sayer.
Written by the great Leo Sayer and was his 1st hit. He wore a clown suit when he preformed it in concert. A fun one by him was Long Tall Glasses that make you want to dance.
Written by singer/songwriter Leo Sayer and done awesomely by Three Dog night. When performers must endure, the hardships of show business and contract negotiations. And have little to no control on their venues. They feel trap inside a maze of their own doing. While (Walking on a High Wire) trying to keep a semblance of balance in their lives. All to attain fame and fortune. Sooner or later it all comes tumbling down in the end.😪😪
I saw them on their reunion tour in 83 or 84... they were amazing.. Sadly nly 1 of the orignal vocalists is still with them and the band has changed a lot.. but I am sure they will still be a great show and if they come out this way... I will go see them..
Harri, that intro and interlude has always just been known to me as Circus music. I'm sure it has a name but I have heard it all my life in many forms and places. I'm quite sure Three Dog Night borrowed it.
The theme they use is a classical piece that as you rightly identified it is most commonly used for the entrance of clowns at the circus. The song was written and originally recorded by Leo Sayer. This was the the last big hit for 3 Dog Night. It peaked at number 3 in 1974.
What they singing about??? Listen to Jackson Browne's Running on Empty. Life on the road rolling from one town to the next show. Life `?' it's a circus... The Show Must Go On.
This is a great song Craig I love it. I just love Three Dog Night. Harri, this song is called the Entrance of the Gladiators, and it’s usually played at the circus all the time probably at the Merry go round.
Hi Harri! I looked to see if you've done Three Dog Night's Black and White or Joy To The World, but NO! Maybe you know them already? Really great songs.
Yes, it s A circus theme, typically played by the caliope in the circus parade. The song sounds as if it s about a circus performer, but probably is about the life of a traveling musician -- a rock star -- someone under contract who has come to hate the life of the performer. It s on my turn table right now. : )
This album came out with a quadrophonic version. My older brother had the proper quadrophonic equipment in his room in the basement(he was so cool, ha ha). The circus sounding music was mixed to go around and around the room... almost dizzying and absolutely amazing in a world where surround sound hadn't happened yet.
Leo Sayer is the co-writer and original performer of this tune. Three Dog NIght changed the last line of the chorus . In Sayer's version, the last line of the chorus is "I won't let the show go on". Three Dog Night changed this line to "I must let the show go on", which Sayer has criticized. It actually alters the whole meaning of the song.
Harri, this song is not about a relationship; it’s about high-wire artist who desperately wants to leave the circus! Look at the lyrics: “…an enormous crowd of people that laugh at my blood…big cigars… gigantic cars…I wish they’d tear down the walls of this theater and let me out,” etc.
On one level, it's about a circus performer, but on another level it's about being a rock and roll performer. They perform a high-wire act of a type, too, right?
The intro music is circus music... and they adapted it to fit this song.. Leo Sayer is the originator of this song... and the meaning is really different..
Harri, you need to watch the actual videos with these guys.....most of them are funny.....like this one and also "Old Fashioned Love Song".....LOL.....my favorite !!
Yes… circus music… borrowed from the circus 🙂 some of the lyrics mention walking on the high wire…. And of course the title the show must go on. Three dog night had tons of great songs and all three of them have amazing singing voices. Cory Wells has died. I’ve seen them live several times and it was impressive! Thanks for the reaction!
Leo Sayer wrote this after being screwed over by his recording company. I believe it's the same one DEVO complained about. I love Leo's version, but this one is my favorite. Thanks for reviewing it.
Well, the opening was the theme for Ringaling Bros./Barnham And Bailey Circus for many years, Long before this song came out--think they still use it today!
Sometimes being a performer feels like being a trick pony, or highwire artist in this case. Night after night, same old same old if you falter, bam the pack is upon you.
Hi Harri, this song was originally done by a Gentle man named Leo Sayer . If you get a chance watch his video You may catch the meaning. Very Deep Enjoy Wayne
The 'Daltry' record, Roger's first solo lp features mainly Sayer/Courtland songs. I think it predated Leo Sayer's first release that included many of the same songs.
I must admit that as a Brit I do associate this song with Lro Sayer. It is more usual for our Brit singers to do covers of US songs but this was in the 70s when the UK had slightly more dominance in the after glow of the Beatles phenomena
Leo Sayer, verry good songwriter and singer. Oh, sorry, this is 3 DOG NIGHT. Verry fun band, have some excellent songs with a message to the world. The world is black, the world is white.....and so on. Great stuff. Thanks man, loved it. 👊👍😁
I hope you will do more of TDN and, as has been mentioned, you need to see them in concert (many videos on You Tube) as they put on quite a show. They often cut up on stage and interact with the audience. I think you would really enjoy them. God bless you
I'd love to see you react to Leo Sayer performing this in clown makeup, accompanied only by a piano. I love Three Dog Night's version but also Leo's. He wrote it & the performance I mentioned is simplistic but phenomenal. 💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙
A great tune by Three Dog Night, written by Leo Sayers. The Circus intro is a ear grabber for sure, takes you back to your youth. A great tune about trials and tribulations of the business side albeit Circus or Band's. Didn't get enough airplay. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Too bad it's the single version-the album version (on the very underrated Hard Labor album-1974) continues the circus music until it slows down to a crawl-then you hear the creaking of a closing door which you hear latch ending the song. The album released in 1974 contains another top ten hit-Sure As I'm sitting Here and other cool cuts-Sitting In Limbo and the hit Play something sweet-great album.
I have always thought that the lyrics were referring to the life of a performer (like a band) where they are caught up in the endless loop of performances with all of the crowds stomping, cheering and calling for them to the point that the singer simply wants out. He can't get away from them by himself, not even at home because the fans are everywhere. It may not be what Leo Sayer intended when he wrote it, but the circus music brings thoughts of the circuses, the forced performances no matter how you feel that day, the painted on smiles, etc. It's all a facade presented to the masses while the performers themselves are trapped inside a cage of their own making. Anyway, that's my opinion. Whether it's the correct one or not, I don't know
Calliope music is a type of organ associated with the circus. It isn't this song. They used a calliope in the introduction to give the feeling that one was in a circus. It is a literary place marker using the instrument most associated with that place.
This was a minor hit by Leo Sayer before Three Dog Night had a massive hit with the song. Leo was a street busker in London before he became a star. I think in a few of Leo’s early songs one can hear the street busker in him coming out. Leo’s version was far less dramatic.
I thought I read that Leo didn't like this version because 3 Dog says the show must go on and Leo sings that he can't let it go on. And Leo sings it much better. And the song is about his career.
I love Three Dog Night, and they do a very nice job of covering this wonderful Leo Sayer' song .. But IMHO, Leo's original version is much better and it is one of my all-time favourites by any artist .. It has a simplicity and rawness that really speaks to me, and it didn't need the circus music that TDN added .. Plus the scat singing Leo does in the middle is simply inspired .. Please check it out, Harri !
He was talking about the music industry. Leo Sayer also had a hit with this song. The Calliope sounding part is just there because he's telling you it was like a circus the all the time he's been out on the road.

It's just a general circus tune, nothing special. I can't say for sure I think Leo Sayer did this song 1st and it just fits cause of the circus and the show.
The opening music is from Julius Fucik's "March (or Entrance) of the Gladiators". Many people connect this piece with the circus, which is why it's so appropriate here. Great song written by Leo Sayer.
Considering the nature of the lyrics, it was a perfect move to use that march as a point of irony.
this is a gem often overlooked and never reacted to! Kudos to whoever picked it !
Written by the great Leo Sayer and was his 1st hit. He wore a clown suit when he preformed it in concert. A fun one by him was Long Tall Glasses that make you want to dance.
Loved Leo

Well stated!
The circus song is called “Entrance of the Gladiators “. It was the Ringling Brothers theme
From Wiki, the circus music is called Entrance of the Gladiators. At the circus, it is usually played when the clowns come on stage.
Simply one of the best acts out there, back in the day.
Love Three Dog Night. I’m going to see them in concert in a couple weeks. I can’t wait!
Dand! Lucky you
I saw them on their reunion tour in 83 or 84... they were amazing.. Sadly nly 1 of the orignal vocalists is still with them and the band has changed a lot.. but I am sure they will still be a great show and if they come out this way... I will go see them..
They put on a great show. It's just too bad that they aren't all still alive, as dmorq says below.
This song was a cover of the 1974 #2 hit for Leo Sayer
The circus music was used on the original
Harri, that intro and interlude has always just been known to me as Circus music. I'm sure it has a name but I have heard it all my life in many forms and places. I'm quite sure Three Dog Night borrowed it.
It's called "Entry of the Gladiators" by Julius Fucik. I just looked it up.
@@j.woodbury412 Fantastic. Thanks
I'm sure the circus/calliope tune is now in the public domain, which is why Sayer and 3DN could use it without copyright issues.
@@jdw5678 I'm sure it is too.
@@rayj1011 You're welcome. I was curious about it too.

Great song from back in the day
Life is like a circus. We all spend time acting out an act and sometimes we need rescuing.
Love this song, one of my favorites from TDN. And yes, that intro is definitely circus music.
This is a great song Craig I love it. I just love Three Dog Night. Harri, this song is called the Entrance of the Gladiators, and it’s usually played at the circus all the time probably at the Merry go round.
Thanks!
This is indeed the music that always plays at circuses. Worked great for TDN!!!

Leo Sayer is a jerk,,it made more sense of a reality of entrappment with the 3 dog night changed lyric
@@BobSoltis1 yep Leo disagreed but he danced the night away all the way to the bank with the royalties 😄 🤣 😂 😆 😄
I think TDN's version was much more appropriate.
They had some huge hits!!
It’s called the march of the gladiators. It’s a melody that was used often

TDN is one of my favorite groups. You should do Joy To The World. I still have it memorized after all these years!

This tune reminds me of growing up in the 70's like no other.I wore the 45 out lol
Always a great band! We're losing them. The drummer, Floyd Sneed, passed not too long ago. RIP.
How did I forget about this??

Wow a lost hit I remember so clearly love it love you
the intro is from an old peace of music called 'March of the Gladiators'....
Great work...This is a legendary song
There last hit song from what I remember
The 'Daltry' record, Roger's first solo lp features mainly Sayer/Courtland songs. I think it predated Leo Sayer's first release that included many of the same songs.
This is another band that is much more fun to watch live. Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron all sing and put on quite a show.
I believe this was a typical circus tune played at nearly every circus or carnival. The songwriter just incorporated this jingle into this song.
I must admit that as a Brit I do associate this song with Lro Sayer. It is more usual for our Brit singers to do covers of US songs but this was in the 70s when the UK had slightly more dominance in the after glow of the Beatles phenomena

The meaning of the song was the life of a circus entertainer,,I thought,,but it could be a metaphor of a miserable life now that you mentioned it.
You should check out Leo Sayer's (original) version
The intro is traditional circus music
Leo Sayer co-wrote this song and originally recorded it. This cover by 3 Dog Night is really good and A bit better than Leo's.
Calliope music is a type of organ associated with the circus. It isn't this song. They used a calliope in the introduction to give the feeling that one was in a circus. It is a literary place marker using the instrument most associated with that place.
