I’m from Mexico, and I have this problem so I thought that could be the steering wheel position sensor because I saw a video that say that… well you have helped me as much, thank you, great video.
Brilliant video thanx can I ask when one of these clock springs breaks does it show power steering malfunction on dash Alan do u know I've just disconnected steering column when doing clutch and turned steering wheel too much now I've gotta change clock spring
hi ian, never had power steering malfunction associated with the clock spring but yes if you turn the steering too far with the column disconnected it will break the tape of wires and cause numerous faults
Great informative video. I have problems with the cruise control buttons and the "flappy Paddles" on my 65 plate MK5 Mondeo automatic. Recent diagnostic report suggested faulty steering wheel module. Is that the same as the clock spring or something completely different. Your help would be appreciated.😊
Hi Alan any chance you doing video of the same video for mk4.5 I’ve a 2014 2.0tdci and cruise control buttons no longer work common fault I’m lead to believe I’ve done air blower and wd40 down the side of buttons worked for couple weeks then stopped again
Good evening Allan ,once again another informative video.Could you tell me if it’s possible to clean the terminal in the clock spring or just to replace it?my issue is as I’m driving the lights on my steering wheel flash as I turn the steering wheel. Thanks for any information you could me.Cheers Chris
you could spray electrical cleaner on your steering wheel switch packs but i would just replace the clock spring as that is a tape of wires that break and cannot be repaired
@@alan4x thanks very much for that information. I will give it a go at the weekend Romain a taxi myself there’s always seems to be an issue. Thanks again for your time Chris
Hi Alan , just curious do you know if this problem affects the mk3 mondeo too? I have one and I get the symbol on the dash but the cruise control does not activate. It has me stumped. Much love
Hi. Not had any dealings with heated steering wheels but I don’t see how else the power would get from the column to the steering wheel unless through the clock spring so I would say yes
Very detailed video, good job! I've done the same for a Renault Megane 2, and even repaired the wiring inside, which I assume it's possible for the Ford as well. Determination, good soldering tools and preferably a new ribbon would be required :) , I don't know which type of ribbon Ford uses. I did it because the price Renault was asking for it (~ 150 pounds, they only changed the whole block) seemed too much. How much are these Ford spare parts?
Once you get the air bag out you can pull all the switched etc off easily. Each switch bundle is held in with 3 silver screws. Then to access the switches themselves there are 3 small black screws. Then pry the assembles apart as then have small snap type tags. The switches are mounted on a membrane and have a conductive pad that can be cleaned is Isopropal and an ear but. Then reassembly. They are good as new again
Ooooh I have a question and hopefully it's a case of no question is a stupid question. I've got a Mk4 Mondeo and shortly after buying had some trouble with the directional controls on the steering wheel. Having worked on old bikes but not cars it had me a bit stumped. I wanted to disconnect the battery to prevent the air bag going off, but the keyless start means that the steering lock turns on when I'm not in the car holding the clutch down. What's the best way to go about it? Do I need to disconnect the battery before removing the air bag?
I guess with it being a taxi it's a little different due to the miles they cover? I'm pretty sure the fleet management for the place I work at wouldn't change the cruise control buttons on my van if needed! They would grumble at a turbo replacement on an older van!
No horn = no way for a Taxi driver to alert everyone near by and the punter they are outside ready to pick them up. Also an MOT failure for no horn. And the local authority probably imposes inspection restrictions on the terms of the license.
Hi Alan I have a MK4 mondeo could the clock spring cause sticking and binding feeling as turning the wheel sound comes from directly behind the wheel, no buttons effected
the clock spring wont cause any binding but sounds like something is not good, will be a case of dismantling the column to find the fault, not something i have come across
Thanks for the reply, I may just get a second hand full steering column if even you haven't heard of it. I've checked and greased the U-joints on the shaft but no joy. Its coming from right behind the wheel
Hi Alan, enjoy watching your how to videos. Can you tell me if you have ever had to change a brake Light switch on a 2014 plate 2.0 ltr mondeo. If so how do you do it. Thanks in advance for any reply
Hi Alan,I have a 2016 galaxy,,so a mk5 mondeo really,I have a knock from the steering wheel Airbag area when turning /parking could this be the clock spring doing this ? It does have lane control, and the self park system on it,if that makes a difference? All controls are still functioning tho, cheers steve

hi kieran...yes most of the time it is the clock spring unit where the tape of wires break...usually the horn stops working first but changed plenty due to multi function steering wheel buttons not working
I have the same problem on my mk5 Mondeo. The left switches work perfectly, but the ones on the right side don't, or they only read false input, I can't control the SYNC from the steering wheel basically. Do you think it's the clock spring? I already cleaned all the contacts thoroughly.
Many thanks. I needed to clean the contacts on the steering wheel buttons and this helped me get to them.
excellant
Did they work afterwards or did you have to do something else?
I’m from Mexico, and I have this problem so I thought that could be the steering wheel position sensor because I saw a video that say that… well you have helped me as much, thank you, great video.

chances are it will be the clock spring behind the steering wheel
the hex and lug idea came from the mk2 focus way back in 2006, which didnt come to the mk4 mondeo till a year later

i sure the clock spring is around the £80
Changed my clockspring, all buttons work well now except crusie control buttons. Cleaning did not help. Button lights working fine. Thats sad 😢
Is it possible to replace the switch pack without removing the airbag?
Happy New year Alan, I believe sometimes compressed air blown under the switches can get them working if your lucky.
happy new year to you as well

Alan mate sorry to bother you again does the clock spring come separate as I have got new indicators the lot. To the tune of £280
hi william, yes the clock spring is one unit on its own ..i think it costs around 80-90 pounds
@@alan4x thanks pal whipped it out. All good.
Where's Monica? 😃
My old SP socket set has a spinner handle exactly like yours. Do you have the sockets that drive on the flats as well?
hello, where can I order a clock spring for my mondeo because I can't find a suitable one anywhere
Happy New Year Alan and Monica ,,,
happy new year to you marius😜
EML stuck on? Or are they codes from removing the airbag?
i only had the ignition switched on.,..the eml lamp will only go out after i start the engine...happy new year😜

you don't need to disconnect the battery to unplug the air bag..it won't go off
Please tell me where I can buy this part? And how important is it to match all the letters when purchasing? Thank you very much.
you can buy the clock spring unit from your local ford dealer or it may be worth looking on ebay for a deal
Hi Alan. Is this the same procedure for the MK4? My cruise control intermittently works, and I have a spare (now scrap) MK4 to rob of parts!!
I'm impressed, most fleet owners wouldn't go to the expense of replacing stuff like that.
I guess with it being a taxi it's a little different due to the miles they cover? I'm pretty sure the fleet management for the place I work at wouldn't change the cruise control buttons on my van if needed! They would grumble at a turbo replacement on an older van!

i have had the bolt that holds the steering wheel on come loose a few times,,worth getting it checked out
Does the battery need to be disconnected throughout this process?
you don't have to but it would be advisable
Is it the same way of fitting for a mk4 mondeo . As I got fault codes saying sasm unit and cruise control issues

not a clicking noise, no
After disconnecting the battery, is there a re learning procedure for the ECU or does it remember everything ?
no it just remembers everything .. you don't even have to relearn the one touch windows
Hi Alan are the switch parts expensive
Great video content. I’m looking to buy a mondeo but the petrol mk5, would you recommend them in your professional opinion? 👍.
we don't have any petrol mk5 mondeos so i am not in a position to give any judgement, sorry
Alan I have the MK4 59 plate is there much difference between MK4 MK5 doing this job happy new year fella keep them video’s coming 👍
no most vehicle clock springs come off in a similar way, once the air bag is off the steering wheel the rest is straight forward
@@alan4x Cheers Alan
I observed that the steering wheel cover is not fully pressed into the wheel, on top area (12 o'clock), min: 10:05

Hi Alan. Got a 59 plate 2.0 petrol mondeo. Oil filter is covered in oil. Are these known for oil leaks?
Oil filter can untight and oil level light can light up (despite ok oil level).
i would check its tight and nit rotted if a metal canister type
