Kevin Smith quits smoking, Kieran quits Screenwave, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!
When did Kieren quit Screenwave? How did you find out?!
It’s all the rage on TheCinemassacreTruth subreddit. I reached out to ask if he might be interested in talking to us but I have not heard back.
Kieran of Kaveman fame? Oh boy!
@@RedCowArcade an in depth interview 60 Minutes style would get a lot of views.
Kieran lived his life like a candle in the wind.
I've no interest in Kevin Smith or weed but this is a really well presented & focused look. The effort in production doesn't go unnoticed. Great job guys 💚
Happy days are here again
Helloooo!
CLARKS THREE BRAH! MAKIN KIDS CRY BRAH!
Oh me meow!
Take a boo son
I didn't know he was completely sober until Zach and Miri, now it makes so much sense as a cutoff point for where his filmography started getting worse and worse
But also, he got depressed from Zach and Miri flopping. That's a big reason he started smoking so much.
@@ryanjacobson2508 miramax dropped seriously the ball with that one. that should've been his $200M movie and it did mediocre even with peak seth rogan. the ad campaign was terrible. stick drawings and i didn't even know it was a kevin smith movie at the time...
i could see how that would depress you.
All
His stuff has been pretty bloody awful.
not just his films, even
@@anthonyrowland9072 im just learning its a Kevin Smith movie. Honestly the title is terrible too.
So, I'm kinda torn on hearing all of this.
My own disclosure, I was never a pot smoker, I couldn't stand the smell, but in addition to that I have asthma.
I injured my back going on 13 years ago. I've done a lot of things to try and dull the pain just so I can function, which ended up with me hooked on pain pills and drinking. This ultimately led to depression, which led to anti-depressents which led to a myriad of other issues.
Fast forward to 3 years ago.
I finally decided that something needed to change. I went to my doctor and he mentioned medical marijuana. I was pretty desperate at that point, and I had heard about edibles so I wouldn't have to deal with the smoke or smell.
I am happy to say that I've been alchohol free for 3 years, I am off pain pills, and off anti-depressants. I have been using medical marijuana for 3 years and have physically felt better, I started doing yoga, I go outside and hike more instead of staying inside playing video games, etc. I feel like I owe a lot to THC because I honestly don't know if my wife and I would still be married had I not changed and stopped the drinking and pills.
All of that said, it is still addictive and I know that. I feel physically and mentally bad if I don't have it for a couple of days - so the old wives tale of it being nonhabit forming are untrue. IMO it should be treated as any other medication, use as directed and don't abuse it.
I didn't know Smith had gotten to the point where he was essentially high 24/7, always with a joint in hand. I only take mine after work, and after I've done whatever I need to do around the house, because I'm not under any delusion that I'm just as functional when I'm not on it, because I'm definitely not.
IDK, I feel like it has it's benefits, it's certainly helped me; but it should be used in moderation, like any other addictive substance or activity.
It seemed to have really taken a toll on him and his relationships, so I'm glad he's making the change that he feels like he needs to make.
It’s really amazing that you were able to pull yourself out of the kind of spiral you went through and though I think keeping in mind the importance of not over relying on a substance that helps alleviate what you’re dealing with I also think it’s pretty unfair to draw too much of a comparison between you and Kevin smith’s marijuana usage
Using a drug to help allow yourself too stop abusing other substances and cope with a physical injury in the attempt to live (what sounds like) a more normal and healthy life is vastly different than using a drug constantly and copiously to actively avoid addressing issues
I mean you can use cannabis without being addicted to it.
telling your friends they would all be “fucking broke” if it weren’t for you, says to me the only drug he’s addicted to is himself. Don’t sell out then try to be relatable to people who know better
People can't realize their past mistakes and improve themselves?
He is a bit of an ass. But he’s great at creating the persona of someone who cares. I had a buddy who worked for him for two years and the guy is very different in private.
It's a really odd attitude to have consider without all those friends that Kevin 'made rich', he could have never made Clerks.
Kevin Smith fell off so hard. Killjoy (the NFT film) was trite garbage.
No it's absolutely true they all piggy backed off of keven for 20 years so he's absolutely right you obviously Don't know about what happened
Negativity and pessimism are needed honestly for Kevin. What was great about him in interviews was he was so laid back and didn't give a shit his cynicism actually projected confidence. The weed opened up his emotions and he became a blubbering child who cries over CW shows and listens to his daughter for life advice,
damn you roasted him lmao
I wouldn't blame that on weed as much as the climate and atmosphere of the mainstream, current pop culture audience that leaves no room for real progressive, creative growth and is just about rehashing everything to death, that was once cool.
That wasnt the weed lol.
@@Kasigi03 I think "progressive" is the problem actually
@@yashamaga13 Everyone's politics are a problem, whatever. Kevin is his own man and I'm sure there are plenty of factors that contribute to his laziness and bias. Keep the politics at home, jesus! As if conservatism is any better.
Doesn't wanna be alone with his thoughts? I feel like weed puts me in that position.
“Red Cow only talks about Cinemassacre” is the new “The Slobs weren’t properly introduced.” Big Junt fan btw
I grew up on Kevin Smith movies. My friend showed me Clerks when I was 12, and I vibed with it immediately. I saw everything he pumped out by the mid 2000's. I watched the "Evening With..." series, I read his books, I read his comic books. There are lines from his movies I still quote to this day. Dogma is still one of my favorite movies. I even listened to his podcasts far longer than I should have, because he made them. I was as big a fan of the man as anyone. Stoner Kevin just ground down my fandom to a nub.
Kev in the part 3 of this crossover is THE best evidence on record of the addictive potential of cannabis.
I partake, at times quite heavily. I'm not gonna act like it's meth or heroin, but there is a very understated and underpublicized potential for psychological addiction. I'm all for legalization, but stoners need to be honest with themselves and everyone else that it isn't a panacea, and that there are downsides. Kevin Smith's whole career post Zack and Miri is evidence of the damage that it can do to creativity when indulged in too frequently. I've heard it said (by Kevin, iirc) that you should "write stoned, and edit sober." The sober part of that equation is the most important part.
Additionally, weed has a way of making your problems and anxieties "go away". I understand wanting a break from your problems and that anxiety can be crippling and that weed can be helpful with that. But. Masking those problems and anxieties behind a haze of weed smoke 24/7 is only going to make them worse. You have to deal with/confront those problems some time.
I'm glad he has finally taken some steps back from it. It seems like he's been going through a lot behind the scenes and I hope he finds some peace.
I'll forever be grateful to him for introducing me to Tell 'Em Steve Dave.
“You were stone cold sober when you made clerks”
It’s so funny seeing Kevin smith thinking weed is what made him a capable person
Exactly, and arguably CLeRKS is his best work.
It's not really funny, he comes from a poor family and becoming poor himself must obviously be something that horrifies him.
He’s a moron
@@varvarvarvarvarvar lol lighten up buddy
@@varvarvarvarvarvar
Yeah that poor rich bastard lmao
It’s just he spent YEARS, and COUNTLESS times in videos talking about how much weed had made his life better. The 3 parter with Tell Em Steve Dave a couple years ago I swear most of those episodes was him trying to justify how weed was responsible for everything. And then overnight it all changed. I got such whiplash I just am still in shock
Well, you learned something real about people. that's how it happens for quite a number of recovering addicts.
weed like booze is poisen, utter garbage. useless. like all intoxicants aside from caffine
God dam, that clip of Kevin going on about how good of a friend he is while high is giving me some serious second hand embarrassment... I think the teenagers call it, turbo cringe? That's what I feel, I feel myself cringing so hard I might herniate a cheek muscle.
All fevered egos get this way. Howard Stern did it with a certain devilish charm and made it entertaining but that posturing made any self deprecating move he’s made in the direction of his old pals being better comic fans and ideas men than him, suddenly rings hollow.
the way he explains Kevs addictive personality is spot on... smith finds something new and goes balls deep all in, Weed, Veganism, Podcasting, even the gay culture... he rode a joke into the ground "if i was gay id be a bear" . after TESD was added to the smodcast page, immediately TESD become my go to podcast, i fell off of smodcast once mosier stopped being the weekly cohost... and now he'll ride his giving up weed into the ground... make a movie about a stoner who went straight or whatever....
I commented on the James Rolfe biography video not too long ago about how I wanted to get a handle on my over catastrophizing and I’m happy to report things have been going well in that camp. I’ve been making a lot of progress, so much so this podcast has introduced me to chapter 2 of my journey: “handling your high” as Kevin would put it though I use the quote ironically. Not to get too much into it but all I’m gonna say is this video was very eye opening. Thanks again, EJ and Frankie! Always learning from you guys and never having a bad time doing it
who fucking cares
Also regarding the He-Man thing, there is a clear shot from CBM where he said “I was never a huge fan…” and then when they announced the He-Man show, he talked about how he had always been a fan of the series, and I was like 🤨
Really happy to see it's back up! Sucks that you had to cut out a few clips, because you used them in a focused report/discussion about the topic, to affirm your point. Happy days are here again!
Sure seemed like fair use to me! But fair use doesn’t exist on the Internet apparently.
I've listened to TESD for a long time. I love Bry and Walt. Kevin is a prick
Hey everyone, this initially contained a cumulative 2 minutes of clips from Kevin talking about this issue on his Wake and Bake members-only podcast. Smodco contacted me and respectfully asked that I take those bits down or receive a copyright strike on our channel. So I used RUclips’s studio editor to cut those bits out, which is why you might see little jump cuts at times.
Good.
@@eeemaitch I agree. 2 minutes less of Kevin Smith is definitely good 👍
I wish he would have quit weed before making Clerks 3
I've quit alcohol, cigarettes, and now weed. Weed has been the toughest because your brain makes excuses. It's not bad for you. It helped you so much. It's all bs. Dont let substances control you!!
Always control your drug habits. Using and abusing are 2 separate things.
It’s not bad for me
should have done that before writing "reboot" and even worse before "clerks 3"
Clerks 3 had a good ending
@@systemofadownsyndrome7715 out of everything that anyone could possibly come uop with that was the most embarrassing way to "end" the series.
and we all know that when he tanked his next 6 ideas he will be going back to doing clerks 4. i would not even be surprised he would retcon the whole thing. at this point i would not even be surprised if he just reboots the whole series. xD
I used marijuana to quit drinking almost a year ago. I was a bad alcoholic, on a good night I’d drink a 6 pack and go to bed, most nights it was hard liquor. Rehab didn’t work, sober living didn’t, I wasn’t able to stop through those statistically ineffective treatments. I started smoking weed though, and it has led to dramatic improvements in my life. I’m aware that it’s a crutch and I need to get off, but as a fellow addict I totally understand Smith romanticizing weed the way he does. I always attribute my successes to weed, it’s what got me to stop drinking and I’m significantly happier and healthier. I’ve lost 50lbs and am at my first healthy BMI since high school, crazy how easy it is to shed weight when you don’t drink. I’m glad he was able to give it up, hope I can cross that bridge one day, I’m not ready to give it up yet
You could try therapy, get someone to listen how you see the world in the high
I originally thought of marijuana as a way for me to give up alcohol then I realized there was nothing stopping me from doing both. So I did both.
@@lakulo27 over a year and I haven’t had a drink. Maybe I will some day, but at this point I don’t see myself going back. I lost a ton of weight by not drinking (I’ve lost over 80lbs since I quit drinking) and gotten into the wild concept of caring for my body now lol. Quitting drinking helped me make some serious lifestyle changes, I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been, I feel great and never have a hangover. That’s been my biggest deterrent from the bottle here recently
Weed isn't always a crutch. It can be medicinal if you don't use it all day long.
What a great piece! I am not terribly happy about the amount of memories about Kev this brought back. He seemed fun and nice when he was making the early movies, and then the live speaking dates happened. And they were fine, kinda neat. And then "Jay and Silent Bob get Old" came around and it seemed like every episode was about him spitefully dunking on Jay Mewes for cheap laffs in front of a crowd and I got creeped out. Then came Constant Reboot/Crying Kevin and I was glad I had ignored him fer all those years.
Get Old was cool for the first dozen or so episodes, when it was about keeping Jay sober and telling these harrowing tales of his life as a junkie. When it became an hour of "Let us Fuck" and birthday shoutouts every week and constantly calling Jay stupid, then it had gone off.
As someone who partakes in Mary Jane sometimes, weed can absolutely be addictive. In reality, anything we do daily to get joy is addictive, and not all addictions are equal. I know people who allow pot to control every moment of their day. Their day is scheduled and tailored to their marijuana use. Than you got guys in the mid 30s like me, who use it every once in a while to relax, or enjoy the evening. I have a cousin who'd rather sleep his days away if he doesn't have weed. But it's my replacement when we have friends over to drink and watch the game, because I hate alcohol. But I have seen it, the mental addiction is real and people think because its a plant that its okay. I am not naive enough to act like marijuana doesn't have its positive attributes, but its also like most other substances, its mostly dependent on the user. If you have an addictive personality, weed can quickly consume your life.
But I don't judge people who like to have a smoke or edible here and there. We all have our vices and ways to wind down. Just the same as I don't judge people who like to go out every once in a while to have some drinks. But that doesn't erase alcoholism being a massive issue. Moderation and intent of the use is deeply important. Just like overeating, drinking too much, hell even exercising too much can be detrimental. It's far less about the substance than the person actually using the substance. I think we went from being unfair and dishonest about marijuana in a negative way so long in this country, only to overcorrect and now people truly believe there is no negative side effects of use. As with most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
People that are prone to addiction can be hooked on anything.
this. it's the person, not the substance. People are addicted to eating diapers.
i feel bad for kev because even during the era of good movies he caught a ton of shit from critical types (a lot of it coming off as super personal) by people who just seemed jealous that a regular guy got the shot he did and wasn't making the movies they would make. that just fed into any inadequacies he already had.
His movies have been unwatchable for awhile
@@tapset oh, i know. i think he got tired of unreasonable critics who were actually writing in bad faith the entire time. they resented him and not his movies. that led to his weed fueled indie era...
I don't. He was always a poser. He's always been given too much credit for no reason at all. People act like he was some comicbook guru messiah figure when no one ever really needed him in the first place.
Shout out to Walts’ classic NJ Devils Jersey
Thx for the update on Kevin Smith. I wish him well. I first saw Clerks at Woodstock’94. The first night (Fri), The Violent Femmes played a surprise set on the main stage, as the last band of the day. Immediately after it, they had a screening of Clerks. We watched about 20 min of it before heading back to our campsite. A year or so later, I rented it from Blockbuster, unaware that I had already seen the first 20 min. Took me a few minutes of “I swear I’ve seen this somewhere before now” confused thinking before I figured it out. Been a fan of his work since then. Looking forward to his next appearance on Rogan’s podcast, where I’d imagine we’d get to hear more about some of the topics you mentioned in this video. Thx for the content. Liked & subbed.🙂
I used to smoke weed all the time in college. I can’t do it anymore because it makes me real paranoid, and it drives me up the wall that people claim you can’t get addicted to it. I’m glad it’s legal where I live and it should be all over as it helps a lot of people, but it does affect different people differently
I honestly just need to know why Scott Mosier and Kevin haven’t done a SModcast in over a year with zero mention at all
Scott has been doing a lot with Illumination, I think since 2012 he started working his way into the animation industry. But I'm with you, it is curious
amazing convo... KS is a wealth of inspiration.. What I find interesting about the addict's rationalization, is you can replace addict with religious/spiritual/capitalist and the rationalizations are all the same. "It's because of my McGuffin that I'm so nice and everything is so good".
apologize to walt
Funny that you're fascinated with James and Kevin. I honestly always thought that the AVGN movie should have been a Clerks/Mallrats style movie that made you feel what it was like to be a nerd in the 90s. Although it would have been chronologically impossible, I would have loved to see the two at the creative peaks work together.
Two overrated movies that the world would do were both to disappear into obscurity.

Great upload! Enjoyed this.
Kevins being super harsh to two of his oldest homies here( walt & bry) ive seen him talk to jason like this but just assumed it was mewes being a bit much. Kind of an ass nowadays.
What seems likely to me is his daughter moved out and the pandemic “ended” and his wife realized after all these years, most of them him being this pot clown, she didn’t know what this relationship was anymore. You can even hear her grasping at a reason to relate to him by watching Marvel stuff with him over the last year.
Jen honestly realized that he was basically a child. Lets look at how he presents his relationship with her and Harley it's not that of a man it's that of a dude living with two women that he thinks are superior to him. Him and Jen should be equals not what it became.
Kevin Smith sucks. He made like two good movies and is insufferable in every interview.
Dude wrecked lifelong friendships with Walt and Bryan. Walt was right the whole time.
Do we know what specifically caused the present day fall out?
Screw him for ruining He-Man while lying about it and then blaming the fans for what he did
My 2 cents: Weed gives you MORE when you stay off it once in a while for longer periods. By more, I mean creative/spiritual/physical effects. I'm always "up for it", but to make it a special occasion and have cravings for a while makes it that much more special.
His movies started sucking when he started let's be real. Red state was still good though
Smith has pretty much always been mediocre.
Kevin smith can do whatever Kevin smith wants because Kevin smith is Kevin smith!
It makes total sense that he started to use weed constantly, following his heart attack. Kevin had a food addiction (dopamine addiction), and after his heart attack he totally flipped his diet, and started following a vegatarian life style. He spoke about how he followed Penn's advice, because he did this potato diet to lose a lot of weight. The point is, the food was his addiction (dopamine again) and then he just moved to a new addiction. We are all addicted to dopamine, it just depends on where you get your hits from. I recommend people looking into our dopamine addiction in the US especially. It's also what causes people to spend more time on social media, posting to get likes and comments, rather than having real relationships with close friends and family.
Maybe this explains his erratic emotional behavior.
Didn't Comic Book Men cast member "Bryan Johnson" (who looks for all the world like Alan Moore 😁) also have a serious drug problem between seasons of the show (at least as I remember, without hitting a wiki for the information, which I will do now 😅)
Also, I clearly remember this 'interview/intervention' on an episode of Comic Book Men, and was surprised that Kevin gave the okay to broadcast it.
Smoking weed is not a serious drug problem
@@Loch1210Regardless, Kevin has made the decision to quit using it (it may have been some kind of emotional crutch for him, helping him deal with the abuse he suffered in his youth that he had seemingly repressed until recently)

I guess it's a hot take, but I enjoyed MOTU Revelations. I understand why people were disappointed with the bait-and-switch marketing. Smith tried to do something clever and it backfired. I do wish the show with Mark Hamill as Skeletor had more of... that, going for it, but I'd watch season 2 with Super Skeletor if it ever got made (it probably won't).
I lost my best friend to weed addiction. It got to the point where all he cared about was when he was going to get money to get more weed.
So many people will come out to defend weed and how it's not addictive. But I've seen it 1st hand. It destroyed my best friend and tore apart the lives of many others out there.
bro you did not lose your friend to a weed addiction, he had other problems
Pot isn't physically addictive, and there isn't a chance of overdosing from it. It's just a plant, and it helps a lot of people with their anxiety and stomach issues.
The trick with weed is that you don't let it become your hobby and/or your entire identity. You should smoke so that you're able to do things that you wouldn't normally be able to do due to anxiety issues. You shouldn't just smoke as your hobby and not have anything else in your life. Weed should help you to be able to walk through doors in life that you nor.ally wouldn't walk through and do things that you wouldn't normally do because of your anxiety.
Also, you don't want to become one of these people who makes smoking weed their ENTIRE identity. I've seen so many people make weed their entire identity, and that's taking it way too far. You don't want to be one of those people who constantly talk about weed all day, every day and not talk about anything else!
I still think that weed is the better choice for anxiety than a pill like Xanax. Xanax withdrawal can kill you, and I think it's a whole hell of a lot healthier for you to build up a tolerance to weed than Xanax.
The same thing goes with pain pills. If you can smoke a joint instead of taking opiates for physical pain, then you're definitely going to be better off than if you start taking pills to manage your pain. Those opiates and Xanax pills will destroy your health and your life a hell of a lot faster than weed ever could.
@@jamesteegardner2273 Any kind of abuse: food, substance, gambling, etc… usually results from something else. Sometimes it’s a physical dependency, often it’s OCD, and other times it’s anxiety. Cannabis is one of the tamest, it’s not going to kill you or destroy your livelihood like unhealthy food addictions, alcoholism, gambling, and pharmaceuticals.
I do agree, though, that it can be used as a bandage to cover up things that therapy can deal with. Although, if you’re a creative editor, a musician, it can also be used as a tool because your brain processes sound and words differently-you can better understand the layers and build from there. Unfortunately, when writing, unless you have an idea of what you’re doing, a blank page remains a blank page.
😂😂😂😂 I can't believe what I'm reading.
I am currently in the process of quitting weed. I wonder if I am able to do it once in a while, or if this is it and there's no going back. From January 2001 to last week. What a ride. Where's the cheetos? Oh damn I am not hungry still due to quitting, damn.
How's it going in your attempt to get off it? I'm actually thinking of trying to use weed to help wean off alcohol. I don't have a major problem. I drink on the weekends but have been known to polish off a bottle of vodka on a Saturday.
@@renardfox328 I have been drinking infused weed drinks (10 mg per can) once a day to get off smoking weed. Been doing this since beginning of April and it's worked great. Infused drinks have a kick even at a paltry 10 mg (Ontario Canada law) if you are not smoking it too.
Using weed to get off booze is a great idea. How are you doing?
Next I just gotta get off these drinks (one a day). I am addicted to the one weed drink a day.
@@chadhoganlive I wasn't even aware that infused drinks existed. Congrats on the progress man. I'm doing okay, much better now that the winter is over. I'm much more active in the summer, and its easier to wean off the booze now. Still, the stuff is so bad for you, I think that weed would be a better alternative to getting completely sober.
@@renardfox328 Yeah not sure what the laws are or if you have pot stores in your area, but if you do, look into the infused drinks. The edibles here are also 10 mg and they don't do crap, but for some reason the 10mg drinks do it for me. I reccomend the sparkling water drinks as they have less sugar, but the pop drinks are fine also if you don't mind some sugar.
The illegal edibles/drinks have too much THC in them for me, so that's why I find the legal 10mg weed infused beverages are a sweet spot. Especially if you are not a heavy smoker.
Anything you do for 21 days straight will become a habit, whether that's smoking weed or not drinking at all, so whatever you do (or don't do), do it (or don't do it) for 21 days in a row and your habits will change.
Good luck!

Maybe he’ll go back to make good movies after this
I indulge from time to time. I noticed that it lowers that little voice in your mind that tells you what you're working on creatively isn't worth doing. I can see someone taking that as a pathway to success and the fact that he's rich and getting gigs still reinforces it. But when I write high I need to re-visit it sober and clear it up because it does become a stream of conscious at the time.
Just discovered your channel. I enjoyed this discussion. I too see a lot of myself in Kevin
He also quit being funny and relatable whatsoever.
Kevin Smith bounces from extremes, sober to pothead, drinking 2 gallons of milk daily to vegan.
To a lifelong, daily Cannabis user, I see this from various angles. It's fascinating. I really believe that it's more likely that Kevin truly did benefit in a way that likely saved his life at some point. That doesn't mean it can't eventually become an obstacle to healthy relationships. I personally am not the hard worker he is, nor do I have the burden of an intimate, romantic relationship to participate in. I take issue however, w/the notion that the weed had a negative effect on his creativity. That IMO, is BS

The idea that you can't get addicted to weed is stupid. You can get addicted to food. You can get addicted to sex. I know a woman who is addicted to running. My Father replaced alcohol with work, he would be frustrated during holidays and constantly finding grueling things to do around the house. If you think critically for less than a minute, it's more than obvious.
I didn't realize until this clip that you both seem to have a Christian background. Why is Smeagle out the shire?
Kevin forgot all about moderation and he forgot to remind himself of what Jason Mewes has gone through (obviously a much more difficult addiction, but still) and he let himself become psychologically addicted to weed. He said himself, on Steve-Os podcast, that he smoked so much to avoid the bad feelings he felt about never being able to break away from "the other guy", meaning the funloving, jokeful persona that he displayed outwardly and who always thought about how to make money from being "himself".
So Kevin lost track of his real self and used weed to cover up the negative feelings regarding that fact that were slowly coming to a boiling point. And when it did, his sense of reality broke and he got checked into a mental institution and thankfully got better. Now, "the other guy" has lost control over the real Kevin and his life seems to be going great again.
I totally understand why he doesnt want to smoke weed anymore; if I were in the same situation it would only remind me if the darkness brewing before hell broke loose.
However, you shouldnt blame it all on the weed; he could have used alcohol or pills or whatever agent closeby that made him feel good and would help him block out his troubles. Weed did not cause this because it started once he started doing his Q and As and "the other guy" was created. Weed was just the band aid he used to avoid fixing the growing wound.
But thank fuck he's doing better today.
I don’t know, I found Reboot was a return to style, and Clerks 3 was his best since the 1990s. The era I didn’t really buy into was when his films started to feel like everyone else’s in the early 2000s (Jersey Girl, Clerks 2, Zack and Miri). They’re not necessarily bad films, just not unique films-it was Kevin Smith doing an Adam McKay film, or a Judd Apatow film-and not quite as good. Clerks to Chasing Amy, Reboot, and Clerks 3 are the types of films that only Kevin Smith makes, and they each have their own personality. Dogma and Strike Back were fun films too, but you could tell he was losing his organic development as an artist in those ones.
0:52 - Frankie, you've convinced me. Wayne Gretzky is the gateway to weed
Man, you guys are judgmental - "remember when he cried? Gotta be the pot..."
How is that judgmental? Kevin himself says it all the time. “And I couldn’t help but cry, because I’m a stoner.” Do you follow Kevin at all?
Instead of worrying about his smoking, he should put more effort into his critiques, both giving and receiving and the quality of his work. Because no matter how you feel about his old stuff, at least he was more willing to do stories he wanted to do and had a some interesting characters and stories.
Smoking weed a few hours before bed is the only way to do it really. Otherwise it’s going to impact your life in a negative way.
Even that's bad , shouldn't do it habitually
@@ACslater1 says you? who are you? let me tell you what to do with your life, and what you can and can not do.
Normal. Everyone gets addicted to whatever
I haven't seen Red State, but from what I've seen his 1st 4 Viewaskew films were classics, Strike Back was interesting & kinda fun, and then the rest has been very meh. Jersey Girl gets more hate than it deserves, it's fine. Rest mostly sucks.
Red State was truly his last great film and honestly pisses me off he didn't continue down the route. It was angry and uncompromising.
@@NA86737 i enjoyed tusk for how pessimistic and strange it was. Some
Great dialogue and performances. But Red State felt like his last truly ambitious outing. Recently with Jay and Bob reboot and Clerks III it feels like an old band playing the hits.
He wrote Red State sober but then did most of the post production high. It's a film with great potential but you can start to see some of the weird editing decisions of stoner Kev starting to seep into the mix. I think what saves the movie is the cast and Dave Klein's cinematography. It's definitely his last watchable film, but you can kind of start to feel he's falling asleep behind the wheel as a director.
Let's be real, Clerks was his peak. Every movie past that point has gotten progressively worse. Even the decent Mall Rats and Chasing Amy were not as good as Clerks. That's going to drive anyone to abuse substances and food.
Kyle is one of the funniest people in comedy right now! Keep on punching! Keemun!
This Jersey boy is saddened by these Kevin Smith developments. 😢
I think it’s good news, that he’s tackling this unresolved aspect of his life.
The strange thing to me is how cryptic he's been. This is Kevin Smith, he takes 10 personal anecdotes and another 10 tangents to say anything. Odd he hasn't been on 50 podcasts going on and on about it. It's just out of character.
I mean… exploring trauma makes good art especially if you move beyond the trauma… and don’t avoid this stuff because those are your tests in life… I quit drinking for January and didn’t realize how tired I was all the time. But now I am playing video games too much. Good message from the opera her guy. I feel like a of the world needs to learn this.
“-kin broke.”
Nothing wrong with a little herb
Definitely something wrong with alot though
all things in moderation
It was definitely the weed and not the underlying mental illness he’s been dealing with since his childhood 😂
That’s not what we said whatsoever.
@@RedCowArcade a lot of the narrative around Kevin Smith is that weed somehow played a big part in his situation which is laughable I am not implying that’s RedCow’s take on the scenario
Good, hopefully this means Kevin will go back to how he used to be. Th pot smoking, ADD hyper, and crying over insignificant shit is infuriating.
I bet he cheated on his wife. Age old story. Now hes on the "Weed made me do it" press tour
sly hits all of us
walt is the best.
Kevin Smith is interesting, God bless him. I think that the tragedy of his situation is that, of course, his friend couldn't tell him "I liked the nervous Kev better".
He-Man wasn’t horrible, each to their own but it wasn’t horrible, it was just mid 🤷♂️
Also people being critical of Kevin or other people for that matter is laughable, perhaps you guys and everyone else who criticise another individual should take stock of their own imperfect lives and focus on that instead of making a fucking podcast casting light on someone else’s struggle and making fun of it instead of standing up and championing those people for making an effort to overcome their demons. To quote Rocky Balboa .. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!
Please for the love of god don’t be critical of somebody who is struggling whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally, whether it be in a relationship, or an addiction or whatever. Stand up and cheer them on and make sure they can get through whatever it is they’re going through because being an asshole and putting people down for a mistake they’ve made or a series of mistakes or whatever it is that has made them feel like they need to hurt themselves to make themselves feel something doesn’t make you cool or hard, it makes you a piece of shit and you’re less than nothing for it.
I’m a big Kev Smith fan. It sure sounds like someone had an affair. Hope I’m wrong…but yea, I doubt it.
His wife had an affair you’re saying?
@@johngoldsworthy7135 if that happened can't blame her they always came across like he would be a guy who got cuckold
Maybe he'll get back to making halfway decent movies again.
He looks like C.M punk on that podcast
I really do think that Kevin has strayed from God and is struggling to find his way back. I think this is a step in the right direction.
Lol if anything this will finally get him to fully go atheist
@@DKDaniel01 he has
Now keep him AWAY from Joe Rohan!!! Hell open his ‘third eye’ and convince him weed is the matrix gift to life, can make everything better, including dize size and credit score, and he’ll just go right back…
maybe he'll drop the Canadian blackface
I don't have a problem with people smoking weed, but there is a direct correlation with Kevin Smoking Weed and his films no longer being funny.
Maybe he just isn't funny anymore? Happens to a lot of people. They fall off.
Kevin Smith is maybe the worst filmakers in 30 years why does anyone care about if he smokes weed. He has that weird face from surcially removing fat and just get movies made because he has celebrity friends, it's just bizarre.
I know there are worse things, but stoner comedies have softened weed too much IMO. You always hear "just treat it like alcohol" but we don't. In 2023 if someone comes out of their car smelling like booze with open containers we go "wow what an idiot". If someone drives by and all you smell is weed, no one says a word or some even think it's cool. It's not cool to always be stoned just like how it's not cool to always drink.
As for addiction, anyone who thinks you can't get addicted to weed is probably just kidding themselves. There's certainly no scientific reasoning to think that. I knew people who had to leave parties and drive home because they had to smoke. I've had friends who are normally calm get angry and have outbursts when they go more than a day without weed. That's an addiction. The moment you feel you need it, that an addiction.
We drill "drink responsibly" in our heads but as weed becomes more legalized we have to apply the same mindset and get out of the "oh it's just weed" mindset.
"quitting" weed when you're a 50 something year old manboy? Uh... good job, I guess? I'll never get how people even get so obsessed with weed.
Thank you fellows, this is kind of interesting. I can't imagine going 0 to 60 and smoking all day long. You'd really have to keep a top-notch vitamin regimen to keep it up. Almost certainly the crying is part of brain chemistry/withdrawal. Also, thanks for not letting us see the dick shorts anymore. And totally came around on the AVGN stuff, I don't think I can watch another one. The team certainly does not have the magic of the first 50? episodes.
