- Tribute to Willie Mays, one of the few players in discussion for greatest of all time, following his passing. I also show my 1958 Topps Willie Mays cards, which are the only Mays cards I have in my collection. #williemays #sportscards #vintagebaseball #vintagebaseballcards #vintagecards

Wonderful tribute to Willie Mays, Mark. Willie was my childhood hero. IMO The Say Hey Kid was the greatest all round ballplayer of all time. Some true treasures in your collection. Thanks for showing us those classic '58 cards.
Thanks so much - appreciate it. Wish I could have seen him play!
Nice tribute to the Say Hey Kid and beautiful cards. All his cards have great photos. Willie and the Duke is one of my favorite cards. We lost a great ambassador to the game. Truly a humble man. Take care

wonderful tribute Mark, I was absolutely heartbroken to hear about Willie, a true legend on and off the field. I have my own tribute forthcoming.health and happiness to you .. Jonathan.. aka the Boston kid
Thanks Jonathan - I'll keep an eye out for yours too.
This is a beautiful and balanced tribute. Mays is in my top three for greatest of all time. I believe he appeared in all five of the first Topps all-star subsets, before they suspended their inclusion after the 1962 season. I know that Jackie Robinson critiqued superstars such as Mays and Ernie Banks for not being sufficiently outspoken, but each man had his own way of spearheading progress. For instance, Mays' persistence in buying a nice San Francisco home, of which I was not previously aware, speaks volumes about the strides he made toward fair real estate practices. I think he lived in Harlem during his years in New York, but Harlem was an old well-known area with some upscale sections for prosperous African-Americans.
Thanks Michael. I definitely want to read more about this. If you have any recommendations let me know.
If there's any way you can get into the Sports Illustrated archives, they had a landmark 1968 series of articles entitled "The Black Athlete: A Shameful Story."
