Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

Tell me how this isn't given 'too much edge'... The costumes are in edgy materials, laser cut leather.... and a toned down and edgy colour palette except for the men. I'm not a costume expert but it even looks like that Ermine gown is based on the 1830s instead of the early 1700s, at least thats what it reminds me of. Baroque England, though, is a little bit 'odd' and I'm no expert like I said but clearly this entire movie is quite edgy, its about a lesbian love affair times two with the queen of england.

Yeah the ending is amazing while tragic. Confusing at first too but when you realize what it means, it's satisfying. The bunnies represent the Queen's loneliness, replacing those she loves with someone that turns out to be less genuine. The rabbits also represent the cage that Abigail is now in, thinking she has won at first but now realizing she is still dependent on the Queen's favor, who now hates her because her true colors is now seen.

I'm genuinely surprised how much I've enjoyed this film.
I usually avoid court drama, considering most of them are cheesy and lazy scripted.
But the favourite showcases how you can tell a brutal story with such a fine, witty dialogue.
the eerie violin with spooky images enhance the feeling of fear and unstable, characters get so delusional by power
end up crying on floor or trapped in millions of hallways.
The movie give me an overall feeling of psychological horror,
which is rarely shown in cinema.
I've thought I'm too cynical to add any new movies in my top list,
but this, does make an exception for an old man like me.

Stone, Colman and Weisz translated the roles they played with such vigour, conviction, passion and above all humor. Colman's translation of the mad and narcistic Queen Anne were so real and Stone's translation of the oh so beautiful and charming and manupalitive Abigail was hilarious at times, especially the Me Too scene in the woods. By showing you the whole room and also isolating the character in a small space-like, a small character in a big space-you get a feeling of no escape." Fascinating! Man those fish-eyed wide angle fast paced shots were beautiful to look at and actually added a feeling to the scene - knowing way more than you can handle.

Black Panther is a front runner in all 3 of those categories as well. I can see this winning Makeup and Set design but Costumes goes to Black Panther. These costumes don’t look like anything we haven’t seen before in period pieces. Black Panther gave us something new by representing African culture and tribes, which has never been done before in a major movie

I totally agree with you....but the Oscars are biased and whatever we predict might never actually happen but yes Black Panther has got some innovative costume designing...

I agree, the Academy has always been against superhero films.
I think this year will be different though. Black Panther was too much of a phenomenon to be ignored

The awarding of the last two Best Actress Oscars, to Frances McDormand and Olivia Colman, have been the only times in the last decade at least that I've cared or been genuinely happy the choices. Both women are amazing performers.

True. Olivia Colman is actually my new favorite actress:) I will watch *most* everything the lady is in lol. But I’ve gotta hand it to Frances McDormand. She’s next level acting honestly. If you gave me the option to watch North Country or Fleabag, I would choose North Country. When you wrote her name, I was like oh yea Frances is in a league of her own. But Olivia’s win was very well deserved. One of the nicest tip of the hats from the film industry in a very long time. :)
