I have a bunch of different cameras... full frame, APS-C, pocketable, film, fixed lens, etc. They all have different purposes and I take them in different situations. A general observation I am noticing is that the more a camera makes getting a photo easier, the less I like the process, but the more likely I am to get a keeper. The more we struggle to get a photo, the more we connect with it. I think that is why we are seeing a bit of a move back to film photography.

I think the best reason to get a camera or a lens isn't the image quality or some tech specs. The best reason to get a camera, lens or other equipment is when it inspires you and makes you take more shots, use it more, enjoy more. The sensor size, the tech, etc, it's almost irrelevant if you don't feel something when making photos. At least as a hobbyist. Maybe a pro have other kind of requirements.

Well said, I think today too much emphasis is put buying the latest cameras, lenses, tripods etc which cost the price of a kidney!!!, some of us have to " make the most of what we've got or can afford", it's not what you've got it's enjoying what you've got. What really gets my blood boiling is when "some" RUclips photographers are "given" the lastest/most expensive gear for free to try!!!!!!!, yes you're right I'm just jealous but I want to be given inspiration with my equipment and not scream at my tablet screen "you arsewipes!!!!!).

Totally agree. I fell in that trap (and still do from time to time). I was just looking at some pictures I took over the weekend. The large majority were poorly composed. Very few of them were very sharp while most were not, which suggests my lens is fine. The problem is me. We are too obsessed with getting the best tools and not enough with learning how to use them properly.

The combination of the X-T5 for stills and the X-H2 for video can't be beat. Best of both worlds. And they serve as backups for each other because both mostly overlap in capabilities. You get the joy of shooting an XT and the convenience of video on an XH. 👍👍🙂

Another excellent video. I particularly loved the pic at 7.30 and the explanation behind your shot at 9.00. My favourite camera is still the first proper camera I had, the Zeiss Ikon Contina back in the 70’s but it can’t touch the immensely satisfying shots I can get with my Nikon Z7. I did a shoot last week at a military museum. I was dealing with tungsten, fluorescent and daylight and shooting at 64-8000 ISO. My old Contina would have failed miserably. I also had the luxury of using a 14-30 lens as opposed to a fixed 35mm.

The view down Nant Ffrancon from Pont pen y Benglog and Rhaeadr Ogwen brings back so many memories, great shots. I use the XT5 because of its aesthetics and the fact that it doesn't have the (car door mirror) rear screen of the XT4, but then I don't do video.

Having been involved in photography for over 50 years (starting with a Leica M2 my father graciously loaned to me as a teenager 🙂), I've owned quite a few different film and digital bodies over the years. What keeps me interested is the love of being outdoors and bringing home photographic memories. I'm as excited as the next person when buying a new camera. However, that novelty soon wears off and I'm back to just enjoying the experience. Having said that, my Fuji X bodies are still a great draw! 😉

I feel the same way about my XH2. I also have an xt3 and find myself reaching for the xt3 most of the time. I bought the xh2 when it first came out to retire my xt20 which was giving me problems (I like to have two bodies when I travel) The XH2 is a wonderful device and I use it mostly when I shoot wildlife and birds as it has a much better autofocus. Nonetheless, I don't feel the same experience when I use it as I do with the xt3 especially for landscapes. Perhaps it is because I started photographing with a Pentax Spotmatic some 50 years ago. The feel of the xt3 is very similar to the older pentax models and it just feels comfortable to use despite my having used PASM cameras for many years prior to switching to Fuji. I am debating selling the xh2 and grip to get an xt5 but I love using the grip for shooting birds and wildlife as it makes vertical shooting so much more comfortable.

I've had many cameras over the years, my current one is a Nikon D750, which I do love. But I think my favourite one is a Ross Autorange 820. It's a bellows camera from the early 50s and uses (well used, it's retired now with a lazy shutter) 620/120 film. You could either shoot 8 oblong or 12 square photos. I only realised how good it was when I bought my first SLR, a Zenith B. Every photo had to count, whereas now, I can shoot numerous shots, all slightly different and choose the best. I really like your photos, keep up the good work!

Sure the X-T3 / X-T5 looks better. But listening to you go over changing shutter speeds, I can’t figure why any one would like using the shutter speed dial that does not give you all the speeds. You still have to use the command dial on the X-T3 for all the speeds.

    • @TimvanderLeeuw
      @TimvanderLeeuw 8 месяцев назад

On the one hand I find it very natural on my X-T3 to choose the "major shutter speed" with the top dial and then fine-tune that with the rear command dial. That is mostly when I'm shooting in the landscape and not using aperture-priority, which I often do, and then having 2 dials that together control shutter speed is not an issue.
On the other hand I do get what you mean and I also enjoy that on my X-H2s I have just a single dial for all shutter speed selection, even though it takes me more turns of the wheel to get there, so to say.
And I enjoy more and more having the user-defined presets on the X-H2s.

I find your comment about the camera very strange, as a photographer and collector, I acknowledge that there are some cameras over the years that have not only been wonderful design pieces but also workhorses, I have the XT1, XT20, XT30 & XT3 all of them having great design and function, I didn't get the 2 as I found it a rather ugly and more of a trip than a strid, the same as the XT4 almost a hit one miss one and there have been some bad ones in the past, where manufacturers seemed to just want to get model out, rather than achieve a triple crown, design, function & reliability, Nikon f2 f4 Olyimpus OM 1, 2 Canon A1 and many others that are beautiful but not attractive, so the Title is really decrying a camera because it doesn't have the right screen and decrying another even though it does! ? The choice and capabilities of what can be produced is like the car market, they almost build in a flaw to give a gripe quality! It struck me years ago, how can car companies still make mistakes in shape, engine, gearbox or body work, when engineers built machines that still function today, its safe to say that the cameras of today are not going to be working or repairable as the ones built decades ago, I wonder if the photography will improve!?

As well as being into photography, Im also a drummer and getting new or different equipment has not only got me excited to play it’s genuinely inspired me to play a certain way or try new things.
I bet there are artists out there now who have, at some point, been exited to try new paints, brushes or papers and in some way been inspired to use them and make something great or learn and develop a new skill or technique.
If you don’t get that from your photography gear then maybe you’re also using the wrong camera or equipment.

@@00Ryder I know musicians playing stradivarri violins, they for sure love their instruments for the sound quality but I never ever heard say any of them the instrument is what inspires them but they can talk very passionate about compositions and how they should sound. but with amateur photography now everything is about gear and when someone looks for inspiration they end up on stuff like what is coming from this guy. his images are so boring without even the smallest hint of creativity or personal style completely exchangeable with everything the other uncountable guys on RUclips produce to sell presets or other crap. so it seems cameras do not really work well to trigger creativity and ideas.
images are (or should be) created in our head first and than you use the camera , lense what works best or what is available to you to record it. it is the biggest misunderstanding that great photography is a question of tools it is not but an army of people are working hard to make you believe the opposite for their own advantage.
everything inspires me, places, people, books, art, music, great photographers, movies, even sometimes simple banal things or how light falls on objects just for seconds.

In much the same way, would your violinist friends be so inclined to pick up a terrible violin or one with no soul?
      I wouldn’t
Great sounding drums or cymbals make me want to play. Weather it’s new, old, quirk or just sounds great. Ultimately it’s me playing the thing but if I had a choice between something interesting with soul that made me feel something when I played it… that’s what I’d play and I’d undoubtedly play it more.
I also get inspired by other people, music, stuff I see or hear and experiences like anyone else does but having equipment that makes you want to use it will lead to you using it more.
