Universal - 1999
I read this book weeks ago. It was amazing. The story has been done so well and some paragraphs made me sad, I mean real sad. I don't feel crying, but the story’s just sad, and beautiful. Its like the best love story I've ever read. I'm still thinking about it, like, everyday.
I lived in the town it was filmed in, loved the book and the movie.
I miss being home.
Tinymoezzy-That's so cool. I've loved both the book & the movie ever since I first saw the movie in my late teens (the book is still one of my favourites). I always thought the town they filmed in for the movie looked absolutely stunning, especially when you see it during the snowstorm. Hopefully you get the chance to go back there again someday.
@@kirstyfairly4371 I did, 3 months ago. Planning a trip in April to visit my dad. ❤️
@@Tinymoezzy -That's great 😃. Hope you have a great time when you visit your dad in April.
Jesus Christ can´t believe that the kid playing Young Ishmael is the same actor playing Dorian Gray in tv-series PENNY DREADFUL!
Time flies by so fast! Love this movie with all my heart!
Thanks for the info Dragonfly :-D
I almost fell from the sofa when Reeve´s character Dorian Gray in Penny Dreadful was getting his Freak On with an actor from the amazing 90´s Josh Hartnett. Go Reeve & Josh :-D
If you like a little bit of horror Dragonfly I would recommend that you take a look at this show. Beautiful french actress Eva Green is also on the show.
I´m swedish and it´s getting late here so Dragonfly Good Night and enjoy Penny Dreadful :-D
I'm sorry but I have to tell you in love that it's disrespectful to use God's name in vain when you say Jesus Christ but you're not calling on Him to help you and you're not trying to bless His name but you're just saying it .I'm only letting you know because I care. It might not be a big deal to you but if I was you I'll ask God for forgiveness have a good night. I'll say a prayer for you take care
Relax, God doesn't exist, it's all good
the movie is beautiful, just like the novel.
It's been 8 years that I've read the book and watched the movie of it since college. It was beautiful and sad moments in it yes, but I love it!! 🖤🖤
This movie is heartbreaking. You can feel his pain at the end, holding someone you love with all your heart for the last time.
Yeah.., I've been there.
That sounds like a very hard thing to deal with... The pain must be immense.
met a girl years ago also from this part of the world, time and culture pushed us apart against our wishes. the last thing she said as to me our last rainy night together was… “even the sky cries for us” i’m older now, but she is still deeply rooted in my heart and there isn’t a single day that passes with me longing and thinking of her. i hope she is living a happy life and one day before i pass, id like to hold her one last time.
@@thegutsyninja8851 You made my cry reading your story
I'm still at the middle part of the book and haven't seen the movie yet. i guess this is heart touching
I just started the book and I am on Chapter 11.. I love this book.. I saw the movie years ago.. but Now I am going to revisit it again.. after reading the book
Beautiful movie and score
What is heartbreaking are the dying moments of Carl Heine, unaware that he is about to die. I cried from my heart. 2:26
Is it crazy that this trailer makes me cry? They don't make them like this anymore.
My favorite movie !
This is beautiful
I just read the book of this, and have to say after seeing this trailer, it looks BAD. The story was not centered around Ishmael and Hatsue. They were only part of it. Yet now it was turned into a romance. Typical.
Well, it's the movie industry and there's no way the movie would get funding without a romantic tragic storyline...
The film is visually beautiful. The director, Scott Hicks, has a way with the camera that is very enchanting. I think anyone who has enjoyed the book will find the movie beautiful too. The film deals quite a bit with the racism and unfairness toward the Japanese-Americans and the hardship they endured during and after the war, not just the romance. And actually it is a failed or aborted romance, and that is a big theme- both Ishmael and Hatsue learn to accept the past , let it go, and deal compassionately with the reality of the human needs of the current situation.
Love the book & movie
This world is cruel but I still love you...💔🎵
Anyone know what score/theme was used in this trailer or if there's a rip of just the music for this trailer? It is so profound and emotional
its snow angel. its in my playlist
RIP Sam Shephard and now Max von Sydow...will Ethan Hawke ever be mentioned in the same breath?
Beautiful movie!!!
Aaaaa fetus Reeve Carney, I caan't 😆😆
Epic and superb film
I read the book and saw the movie. Very good but tragic story. It's a shame that Ishmael and Hatsue couldn't be together forever because racism tore them apart. But the love that Ishmael had for Hatuse was real love.
This movie is burned into my soul.
is that Pumpkin from Memoirs of a Geisha??
Yes, that's her.
This is why I'm afraid to see it. Her character in geisha made me not love her. I'm reading the book and Hatsue seems much more badass than she looks in the trailer. She's definitely nothing like pumpkin 😀
This reminds me of Indonesia’s “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck” (The Sinking of Van der Wijck)
Instead of reading the book I'm watching this. Screw my english teacher.

As you get older you'll realize all you did was screw yourself

Anyone here because of Horrible Bosses?? lol
Curt Cook lol definitely. I had never even heard of it until they mentioned it. lol
I know you commented years ago, but I had just watched Horrible Bosses, so I had to see. I did see the movie a long time ago, just wanted to see the trailer. Was going through the comments just to see if any one did come here because of Horrible Bosses. Now I know. Lol, that's awesome.

Its a great story and i thought Ishmael came out of the story as the best character(like a boss). Having been through all that, doing the right thing while not being so race focused like everyone else. On a side note Hatsue was to blame for their relationship failing cause she was never transparent about everything. He was generally an honest good guy and throughout book/ film Hatsue always seems insecure.
Hatsue had to do what her parents wanted; that is (was?) the Japanese way. Her mother didn't want her to marry a white man, only a Japanese man. Hatsue did as she was told, and married an honorable, reliable Japanese man. She really did love Ishmael, and that was why she cried when she wrote him her goodbye letter, lying and saying she loved him, but at the same time she did not, when in reality, she did love him. Honor is everything to the Japanese, and to be honorable, one must listen and obey their parents, even at the expense of your own happiness.
@@chibilaichi No, she did not purely end her relationship with Ishmael because of Japanese tradition. She had whole pages in the book describing her guilt and thoughts of how wrong this relationship was. Her mother and Japanese tradition were a large influence in her decision to never make up with Ishmael, but no, Hatsue wasn't so one-sided that she falls into the cliche of "I love you but my tradition will not allow me, but I will always love you." Ishmael was more like that, but Hatsue told her mother that she decided on the journey to the internment camp that she does not love Ishmael anymore. It did take her time to get over it, but when you compare her descriptions of her and Kabuo's versus her and Ishmael's relationships, you realize that she feels more "right" with Kabuo. She never fully opened up to Ishmael because she herself couldn't fully commit to it.
@@chibilaichi Late reply but she didnt have to listen. 1st shes not Japanese, only partly. Her parents escaped the culture/country so they can make free choices. 2nd honor only has value if people truly believe it. Obeying out of fear of parents wrath is unhealthy. She was dwelling in fear. Likewise a gov't demanding blind loyalty to its soldiers and the troops obeying isn't honorable. Ppl believing the cause is just and eventually serving is honorable. Her actions/indecisiveness were largely based on fear. she never really challenged herself or did anything to break out of her shell. Chose to be housewife, obey parents, leans on her alpha husband. she just seems like she lived the life she was 'supposed to' and never left her shell. still is shy as an adult imo, just calling it as it is
@@alexlei2235 she let fear dictate her life & stopped her from pushing any boundaries to know ishmael better. Never left her shell. She feels Kabuo suits her better but its partly b/c her family approves and also she can remain in a submissive role and in her shell. If you didn't notice, shes a housewife w/no friends. her husband is the alpha of the home and clearly the decision-maker. Offers stability. She was not transparent to ishmael b/c she was shy (still is). Reason her 2 relationships were described so differently is b/c one involved her being afraid and was challenging. Hence why it was 'wrong'. the other one was easy. It sounds harsh Alex but its true. Hatsue stayed in her shell her whole life and its obvious she's insecure even as an adult. Even more blatant in the book
I disagree. Ishmael came out 'best' because it was mainly told from his narrative. He is a great character no doubt but he has his flaws too. Hatsue fell out of love with him. Its really as simple as that. She did not see him in a romantic sense anymore and wished to move on. Which is why she did. She got married, had a loving relationship with her husband, had children and so on. It does not make her 'insecure' that she did not love him anymore and wanted to move on.
You cannot force anyone to love you or be in a relationship with you. No matter how much you like them. That is not how it works. She is not at fault for that.
