My brother and I used to play this game on the Genesis all the time. We'd gotten so good at it that we'd play it on Mode A and intentionally kick the crap out of each other, and still beat the game. Of course, it was never easy during the best of times, but it was always so fun!
.....that would be awesome - only just got around to playing Neon tonight and loving it. Seems like a no-brainer to do a sequel, but if they can't turn it into a battle royale, they ain't interested 😬
Golden Axe 1 had the same system. You had more continues playing for one character on single-player versus co-cop where the continues were shared between two.
Loved this game as a kid. Played it with my neighbor all the time on Genesis. It's SOOO hard though, I don't think we ever managed to get past the 4th level. One of the earliest crossovers I can remember being really excited over...battletoads and double dragon being in the same game was nuts.
Honestly, this is the game Battletoads SHOULD have been. Half straight brawler, half change up gimmick segments, with the difficulty toned down to what mortals can handle. If only this game didn't feel so much cheaper and had the better production values of the original Battletoads.
I personally really love this game; it's actually my favorite game between either franchise. This is coming from someone who loves the whole Double Dragon Trilogy, where Double Dragon 3 was actually my favorite of the NES trilogy. And the Original Battletoads was also really awesome, but Battletoads Arcade was also excellent.
Double Dragon 1 and 2 were very common in arcades. I remember one instance where the jump button didn't work and you had to go "down, up" on the joystick to make Bimmy jump. I had the same thing happen (on one arcade box) with the TMNT arcade game. I have never seen Double Dragon 3 in the wild; I've only played it on MAME. Hoo boy. It doesn't even look like an official game. Animation? Who needs that? It's like the developers were still in the Alpha phase and corporate told them "We need a new game. Just ship what you have."
Technically that's a pretty impressive game! Smooth scrolling in both horizontal as vertical directions, that's not the isiest thing to do on a NES. And the '3d-parallax scrolling' is pretty cool too. And great use of color as wel. I like it, though I never played it!
I remember as a kid expecting this game to be like "Double Dragon 2" (my fav of the DD series) and "Battletoads" combined...Only to be disappointed to find that Billy and Jimmy were essentially 2 extra Battletoads in human form. It was still a fun game, but back then I didn't realize how impossible it would be to code different fight styles into one NES game.
Love this game on the SNES. Still really difficult but you eventually get in a groove and progress. Although that god damn rat space ship always gets me! Was only able to beat it on 2 player.
Love this game!!! One of the select few I still have. Fully beat it only a handful of times. Quick tip : steal lives from the second player on type a for a single player run.
8:50 - The only NES games I'm aware of that actually scaled difficulty based on number of characters playing were the TMNT games. Less enemies would come out and the health of the bosses would decrease. I think the Contra games might've done that too, but I don't know for a fact.
You guys are the best. My fiance' likes James take on things more, and I like Mikes POV more usually. We also watch AVGN together and I like Mikes live runs on games. YOU GUYS ROCK!
When I was a kid I used to count out a waltz time signature while playing Double Dragon 3 to help with the changing platforms that change completely out of time with the background music.
Nice one! Played this a lot on the SNES back in the day. Believe I got it for the Game Boy as well, but don't think I ever tried the NES version. Easiest Battletoads game by far, and gets even easier with Bimmy & Jimmy, thanks to their jump kicks.
Can you guys please play GOLDEN AXE for a future Monday game video? The Sega Genesis version. It has TWO PLAYERS and I think you both would love it. ALSO, can you guys do Castlevania 64 for October? That would be fun to see you guys play that
Andy..my mom just drove me to the store, most of the games i had, i bought em myself. I worked to buy the stuff i wanted as a kid. And i had lots of stuff even a snowmobile and a atc.
It wasmone of those things though. Like...you had the game for a while. Like a couple of months. 1 month being the least. Couple of months being average......and your parents even forgot they bought it for you. So trading ir...they wouldn't even realize you had a knew game. Probably think they bought it. And as a kid...everyone had games, no one was actually trying to be sneaky with parents...it was just the mindset you had. I have this old thing I don't want, let's trade.
yeah , but mom would let you trade them to toys r us for 10% of their value..... i remember trading like 10 games to toys r us for like 20$... they got me good.
By the time 1993 rolled around my NES was an afterthought. Was nothing but 16 bit consoles for me at that point. Never got much into Battletoads/Double Dragon, but I like the separate games. I agree though, Double Dragon 2 is the best one to play.
Look up the stats on how much bigger the gamer market is than when these games were produced. The total number of carts that were made were for a much smaller population of gamers in the 80s/90s. Now you have all these retro collectors, and you can see the problem. It's why the big companies are cashing in now with stuff like mini reproductions of the SNES.
I can agree with that. Especially since SNES games are over $90-$100 recently my local game store came across a copy of Chrono Trigger SNES and they wanted $112 for it. So I can agree the prices are ridiculous
Why did you leave the other one out? You were specific. Only one of your twin sons got to play. Is the other one grounded? Where's the other twin, man? What have you done with him?!?!
I LOVE this game, it's pretty balanced in difficulty, sure the last boss is tough as nails but the amount of 1-UPs you can get if you play well is more than enough to beat that last boss.
One day when i was i kid i realised you can spam the end hit special fist or kicks by running too fast near an already damaged enemy and using the attack button very fast. Some of the bosses were getting one shot by that. But in the end you were getting less points so less extra lives
I know I beat battletoads as a kid, though it was a rental and not actually something I bought. Also beat several of the Double Dragon games but those where mostly borrowed lol. I was more into the Final Fantasy games as well as games like Shining Force 1&2 and Masters of Monsters.. Think I was more into RPGs/Strat games back then. I also got into fighting games but that was the SNES era.
You should play the Snes version, the music is awesome, they also remastered the graphics, the bosses are GIANT, and when they die, they stay there raising their asses so you can kick them out of the screen!
my Russian friend and I just beat this game, it took us like 2 months of trying haha, ever heard of dendy? apparently that is another nes console they had in Russia, but I never heard anyone talking about that in their vast collections
I could've sworn there was a SNES version of this same game that I played as a kid but could never get that far. A remake of this on PS4 would be great.
Yeah let's hope so. Just like they're gonna do a new battletoads, and let's hope that sells well so they can keep on making more new ones in the future.
Games that are harder with two players would make a great Game Sack video.. If you guys don't do it. Also this was a great game choice and video for you guys!!
2 player all the way, even if it is more difficult I always enjoy 2 player more when it is available. It is better to watch you both play at the same time too! Cheers.
When you think about it, Pimple is the only actual "Battle Toad". Zit and Rash are technically "Battle Frogs".
These vids keep me motivated in the low times of RUclips.
Years fly by so fast , been watching Cinemassacre for so many years , it's part of my life, don't ever stop we love you guys!
More like dark ages...
its a lesbian cat... i can tell
But PROTO!
Shutup
My brother and I used to play this game on the Genesis all the time. We'd gotten so good at it that we'd play it on Mode A and intentionally kick the crap out of each other, and still beat the game. Of course, it was never easy during the best of times, but it was always so fun!
How do you know if his dog is nice? How do you even know he has one!? HUH!? HUH?
Years fly by so fast , I've been watching Cinemassacre for so many years , it's part of my life, don't ever stop we love you guys!
Never played this on NES back in the day, I grew up with the Genesis version. A classic :D
I played the SNES version. Great music. They should have used one of the 16 bit ones
"Battletoads, I was never able to beat the Turbo Tunnel"
And now a dude can clear it blindfolded. What a time to be alive.
I never knew an NES version of this game even existed! O_O
If you think this is crazy, there was also a gameboy version.
The NES version is actually the original version.
I thought this was an SNES game😮
This version is the best
It came out on NES, SNES , Sega Genesis and Gameboy
Bimmy and Genital Warts, that is a good team up
Genital warts on your Jimmy.
Yes it is a good team skijumpnose
skijumpnose why do I see your comments at the top of everything? These vids and tons of ASMR videos.
He didn't play as Genital Warts though, they played as Bimmy and Gonorrhea
It is
5:05 this is the only NES game I know that has 3d effects that good they look like SNES level with how the platforms simulates 3d
I owned and beat this game on SNES. Game is no joke.
I didn't even know it was on NES. I was confused by this video lol.
My neighbor had the SNES game when I was younger. We would play all the time but we never got past the Arnold Schwarzenegger boss.
that soundtrack is amazing on snes!
Lmao
It's pretty easy compared to Battletoads.
This game deserves a direct sequel. Maybe even a Battle Toads/Double Dragon Neon EX
.....that would be awesome - only just got around to playing Neon tonight and loving it. Seems like a no-brainer to do a sequel, but if they can't turn it into a battle royale, they ain't interested 😬
This game is more well-rounded than the OG Battletoads IMHO!
I've had this game since I was younger. Me & my friend used to play co-op all the time & die around the same part you guys did.
I could never beat level 2
That game is very funny if you play co-op on mode-a where you can beat your friend :)
I've had this game since I was a little kid as well Intimidation
Me either Monty Mack
Yes it is very funny Sergius
I love the nes one the most.
Golden Axe 1 had the same system. You had more continues playing for one character on single-player versus co-cop where the continues were shared between two.

If only this game didn't feel so much cheaper and had the better production values of the original Battletoads.
Great video, love watching you guys just hang out. Reminds of sitting around with friends as a kid playing games !
This is the world's greatest video game crossovedr ever!!
Had it for the SNES, pretty awesome game.
Graphics are pretty impressive for NES.
4:27 - 4:52 I didn't know NES could do floor rendering like that.
My God, it's one of my fav. NES games EVER! Soo glad to see this..
1. The rat is the same as in Battletoads game.
2. The toads are different. Zitz has the fastest movement speed, and Pimple is the slowest.
Hoo boy. 1 of my favorite games reviewed by my FAVORITE RUclips game reviewer's!!!
Technically that's a pretty impressive game! Smooth scrolling in both horizontal as vertical directions, that's not the isiest thing to do on a NES. And the '3d-parallax scrolling' is pretty cool too. And great use of color as wel. I like it, though I never played it!
This is my favorite game of all time, i played this a lot with my dad back then, so much fun
Ive waited soo long for this one to get played. I loved this game when i was younger.
I used to play the SNES version of this game at my friend's house whenever I went over there. So much fun.
I remember as a kid expecting this game to be like "Double Dragon 2" (my fav of the DD series) and "Battletoads" combined...Only to be disappointed to find that Billy and Jimmy were essentially 2 extra Battletoads in human form. Love this game on the SNES. Still really difficult but you eventually get in a groove and progress. Although that god damn rat space ship always gets me! Was only able to beat it on 2 player.
"Yeah?" "Yeah" "Aha"
im so goddamn depressed watching this guys old videos make me a little happy. thanks m8
It took me a while to figure out what they were talking about when they mentioned fight, until I realized it was on the wall.
I always love leaving these on when I'm working in the backround or trying to fall asleep, :D
14:10 Wow, more absolutely incredible audio syncing, guys.
18:30 Jet Force Gemini is Rare just like Battletoads! Great game, unlocked everything possible as a youth
Finally some guys who state that the speeder bike part is like Turbo Tunnel;
it drives me crazy how almost nobody seems to recognise it as that.
Love this game!!! One of the select few I still have. Fully beat it only a handful of times. Quick tip : steal lives from the second player on type a for a single player run.
You guys should play Flashback: Quest for Identity, it was an awesome game. Also Contra 3: the Alien Wars.
8:50 - The only NES games I'm aware of that actually scaled difficulty based on number of characters playing were the TMNT games. Less enemies would come out and the health of the bosses would decrease. I think the Contra games might've done that too, but I don't know for a fact.
You guys should do Streets of Rage on James & Mike Mondays
The GREATEST beatemup crossover to ever happen ever. God I love this game!
My friend had the SNES version of this game, and we used to play it all the time. My favourite of both series.
You guys are the best. My fiance' likes James take on things more, and I like Mikes POV more usually. We also watch AVGN together and I like Mikes live runs on games. YOU GUYS ROCK!
Never a permanent trade but more of a lend ..
and when you got in a fight with that friend and had to play nice just to get your games back but still wanted to beat their ass.
love this game. one of my #1 rented games as a kid
My favorite NES game! When i was a child, i got this for 1 week to play. When i had to gave it back, i cried a lot.
Very hard, but very fun!
Great game.
Can you guys please play GOLDEN AXE for a future Monday game video? The Sega Genesis version. It has TWO PLAYERS and I think you both would love it.
ALSO, can you guys do Castlevania 64 for October? That would be fun to see you guys play that
Jet Force Gemini was such a good game. You got to play as a little bulldog flyin' around with hover-jets in his feet; how could it *not* be amazing?
I used to trade games back and forth temporarily, but nothing beyond that. I doubt my mom would ever allow that anyway even if I wanted to.
1 month being the least. yeah , but mom would let you trade them to toys r us for 10% of their value..... i remember trading like 10 games to toys r us for like 20$... they got me good.
Loved this game as a kid. That OST is fire af.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES OF MY CHILDHOOD THANK YOU JAMES!!!!!
By the time 1993 rolled around my NES was an afterthought. Was nothing but 16 bit consoles for me at that point. Never got much into Battletoads/Double Dragon, but I like the separate games. I agree though, Double Dragon 2 is the best one to play.
You could do a montage revisiting your old videos. AVGN clean ups
I love James and Mike Mondays
Can’t believe this is a 90-100 dollar game nowadays. 8-bit prices are out of control
Mateo Incognito scarcity value
Ya takes the fun out of collecting, it was before people made it so expensive
its not like the carts are still in production after all.

Me and one of my twin sons played this just last weekend on my modded xbox. had great fun!
Why did you leave the other one out?
You were specific. Only one of your twin sons got to play. Is the other one grounded? Where's the other twin, man? What have you done with him?!?!
hes eating fish heads in the attick
Thats gonna create mental inferiority complex.
Please tell me your sons are named Billy's and jimmy
Almost correct, they're named Bimmy and Jimmy!
Mike yes RARE did curve the game for the 2Player version, as they did for Double Dragon 2 and 3 (less enemies on 1P mode)
I forget how awesome the NES was! This game brings back memories!!!! U should play the Genesis one!!!
I LOVE this game, it's pretty balanced in difficulty, sure the last boss is tough as nails but the amount of 1-UPs you can get if you play well is more than enough to beat that last boss.
I still have the original cart!
Fantastic game :)
I have the snes version and occasionally when my nephew comes over I’ll pop this in and we’ll play for hours
I loved Mikes Nes and SNES videos.
Of the 3 versions, this was my fav because of the music
Battletoads and Double Dragon mashup! Nice one!
I played the SNES version with my cousin before
9:00 Perfect Dark Zero is the game you're looking for. There are MUCH more enemies during COOP gameplay.
3:56 This is how it's canon that even Professor T. Bird can beat Abobo.
One day when i was i kid i realised you can spam the end hit special fist or kicks by running too fast near an already damaged enemy and using the attack button very fast. Some of the bosses were getting one shot by that. But in the end you were getting less points so less extra lives
I love Jet Force Gemini
gurvmlk I got to the same point too. I went back and got everyone tho, then finished the game
Loved this game as a kid.
jet force Gemini is such a great game its a hidden gem from n64 i dont know a lot of people who played that game
This game is so good, i loved it and i love it.
I played this game in the arcade and i smashed the button in. I don't think it was my fault because the guy in front of me was playing crazy.
You should play the Snes version, the music is awesome, they also remastered the graphics, the bosses are GIANT, and when they die, they stay there raising their asses so you can kick them out of the screen!
this was my favorite game as a kid. thank you
Thanks for doing this I love this game to death!
Beat em ups were my favorite back in the day
Quality game,i use to play it on my megadrive, for some reason it reminds me to the time EA was cool "General Chaos"
I loved both franchises as a kid... but I never knew this existed!
#1 - Double Dragon Neon
#2 - Rage of the Dragons
#3 - Super Double Dragon
I remember more the snes version of this game, also from what I remember it felt less cluncky.
Jet Force Gemini was awesome! They should play that sometime!
This is gonna be a good one, yet hard one
my Russian friend and I just beat this game, it took us like 2 months of trying haha, ever heard of dendy? apparently that is another nes console they had in Russia, but I never heard anyone talking about that in their vast collections
I loved jumping over people and throwing them at the same time in double dragon 3
Anybody notice when James and Mike are together they both stutter like crazy?
I'm here in 2020 and they recently released a Battletoads 2020 video game.
I have the SNES version. Didnt think it too hard, specially for a BT title. It's reallly the most reasonable BT game out there
I have the SNES version. The graphics on NES look nicer than I expected
YES! The ultimate team! Go Mike Go James!!!
2 player all the way, even if it is more difficult I always enjoy 2 player more when it is available. It is better to watch you both play at the same time too! Cheers.
