  • Hello Gorgeous!
In this video, I react for the first time to South Korean beatboxer BigMan performing a solo for the Asian Beatbox Championship. In this video, I analyse his amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
This is my second vocal reaction and analysis of a beatbox artist (after ShowGo) and - you guessed it - beatbox just keeps blowing my mind!

The reason it can feel this way is because every elite level beatboxer has their own unique style, and it's very different to improve and evolve once you're already elite. The truth is that beatboxers are a world apart. I have no idea how many hours these people spend practicing to make different sounds, and on the other hand, the sense of rhythm they have to have is, for someone as clumsy as me, almost inhuman.

@@main3182 To get to the highest level, its definitely thousands of hours and several years of consistent practice. I just find it so fascinating the act of starting out with a sound that is unclean and unpracticed then getting cleaner and cleaner by practicing it and spamming it for an extended period of time. You're right that anyone can get good at beatboxing, but you have to put the time in to actually get good just like any musical instrument you are trying to learn. (As you said)

The snare he’s doing is called the spit snare, no tongue needed.
You basically mash your lips together and it makes this crunchy, loud snare. It’s sounds like weak farts when you first try to do it, but with lots of repetition, it’ll sound beefier, fuller and more like a clapping sound. Some people prefer to do this snare while having air trapped in their mouth somewhere i.e their lower lip area (BIGMAN’s position), upper lip area; a beatboxer called Young Recluse does his with the air on the side of his mouth. Others like to do it with little to no air in the mouth (this can be seen in beatboxers like Colaps and FootboxG).
There’s also certain lip positions that people like over others i.e top lip over bottom lip (again, a part of BIGMAN’s position), bottom lip over top, neutral (which is neither), or in a puckered position like you’re going to kiss someone. This is all explained in a tutorial vid by beatboxer DLOW that he did a while back.
There’s a beatboxer named MAX who does this snare with a particular lip position where he juts them out like he’s making a ducky face. Beatboxers like GENE and RIVER have very strong spit snares. COLAPS has a sharp spit snare. RIVER modified the snare and created a signature technique called the RIVER/pitched snare ( _SHOCKWAVE_ ).
Regardless, it’s a technique that can create a powerful and loud snare. Plus, it’s very useful for breath control as it’s an ‘airless’ sound that is essentially the outward pressure generated by upper and lower lip pushing against each other really hard. That’s why you can see him overlay his singing and throat bass on top of the snare without any problems.

The fact that you go out of your way to try and reproduce the sounds that all different types of vocalists make-with your own voice/body-is what really gives your insights so much direct credibility and extra entertainment to any viewers who aren't very knowledgeable. 100% my favourite reaction videos for beatboxing content after only 2 (that I can see) videos! Really like the appreciation through knowledge that you're having with these people and their skill. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the loopstation content that's inevitably going to be recommended to you if you delve deeper into the rabbit hole! Keep up the good content!

I feel like you'd appreciate some of what's called "inward bass" from beatboxing, because it uses the false folds, while inhaling, to create an extremely thick, low pitch. King Inertia, D-low, and Vocodah are all amazing users of this technique 👌

I think you're gonna love Codfish - Swimming Like a Toad, Den - Moments i Had, Stitch - Stay With Me and Gene Shinozaki - Metamorphosis. These beatboxers are considered as musical beatboxers but then you have technical beatboxers like Colaps - Precision, Alexinho - GBB 21 Wildcard and Helium - Requiem For a Dream. They still do musical beats but primarily do technical stuff and then there are my favorite, beatboxers who are in between, they combine musicality and technicality perfectly River' - By Ourselves, D-Low - Hard Sometimes, King Inertia - Collard Greens and Zekka - Make you Change. I think you should also react to some Live Battles, mainly Grand Beatbox Battle. Here are some battles i recommend : River' vs Hiss GBB 21, King Inertia vs Helium GBB 21, Colaps vs Zekka GBB 21, D-Low vs B-Art GBB 19, Show-Go vs Bataco GBB 18, Hiss vs NaPoM GBB 17.

"DEN | 2nd Place Compilation" is something I think you should check out, it's from a recent competition called BBU... and Den is a great singer aswell as a producer and beatboxer. From this competition he got known for his impeccable pitch. BBU was a bit different in the way that you got more freedom to use effects like reverb, just to be able to make it sound as good as possible. But it had to be beatboxable by 1 person and everything had to come from the mouth. It was a really fun concept and Den nailed it :)
Love your energy and the reactions! Keep up the good work :)

Ayyy She's back!! Just as good as the Sho-go breakdown :D
As you get into the scene (and a very happy welcome we love when folks from different disciplines come in and appreciate/educate us!!) I encourage you to start around the 2017/2018 era and work your way to modern stuff. As with any small scene what's popular, new techniques and callbacks to past performances I think will only enhance you appreciation for all the amazing performances by these artists :).
