This entry in the Red Book is one of my favorites, so I was glad to see you do a video on it. I don't find it dark at all. To me, it's a hopeful message. Everyone has a dark side, but to confront it and accept that it is there, leads to the joy of a wholeness. One of the things I like about Jung is he does not overlook the shadow in all of us...

If I might add, (to your wonderful commentary): "O, Blessed are you, the fortunate one who knows the rituals of the gods...Whose spirit merges with these Bacchic celebrations, frenzied dancing in the mountains, our purifying rites-one who reveres these mysteries from Kybele our Great Mother who, waving the Thyrsus, forehead crowned with ivy, serves Dionysos".-Euripides, c 400 BCE from 'The Bacchae'

It seems like Jung is wrestling, or contemplating a certain beleif, moral, or view of life. Its like he's using himself, the intellect and life experiences he had, to measure concepts that he him self conceived in the higher realms of thought. The red one is a part of him that seemingly materialized from the land of his own mind. His castle being his spiritual base and fortified with what knowledge he has obtained.

Dear Joseph, could i ask something?
Have you ever tried active imagination? Because there a two ways of understanding Jung. One is where someone reads him interlectuelly and understands the words, but the other one does active imagination for himself and understands with through feeling. Having the red book (since i discovered your lectures) and parts of his collected works, i think that the feeling way is surpirior for its how he understood it.

About 27 minutes in but before I forget to write this, recently I came to an epiphany. For over a decade I was what I could describe as being overtaken by my devil and was eating myself alive. Well recently with no real help with therapy and no real searching, I allowed myself to actually listen to the opposing side giving me reasons to see the usefulness and wisdom all the pain and mistakes I’ve suffered whether self inflicted or not. Seeing how people leaving my life isn’t necessarily a bad thing to suffer from for our time spent resulted in them being in a greater position rather than where they were heading before I entered their lives; as well as all the traumas I experienced gave me tools to handle walking with these people along their paths until we split. Now I have a purpose independent of specific people, now I feel I’m a companion meant to walk and talk with the broken, lost, and lonely until greener pastures arrive and they must go along their way. Honestly if this is my purpose then I don’t mind it’s something admirable, something that allows me to look in the mirror or behind my eyelids within myself and smile for once in god knows how long.

Sounds like a meeting with the Lesser Guardian of the Threshold, as Rudolf Steiner described it. Each human creates this being out of all our negative thoughts, feelings, words, and deeds...our fears and our hatreds. This particular being is Jung's personal creation. We each have our own. To journey into the spiritual realms, we must confront this being every time we want to cross over. This being changes as we change and as we interact with it. If we can, we transform this being so that it becomes more and more like an ally than an adversary.

Your narrative, creative use of graphics and explanation of this, of what was perhaps the most important work of the 20th and 21st century, is of great value in spreading the knowledge that it contains-at exactly the right time to do so.

Thank you for that. I have been speaking of the dance for some time, along with many other things, and this is great to get confirmation of the reasons that knowledge comes from my dance. My joy within the thin line of the Yin and Yang. The place where there is no battle, never was. Where harmony and paradox dance together just the same. The completion of the trinity. The place where the divine resides. Where all logic is useless as you know it. So dance as if there is no one is watching, because the one's who are watching of importance are not the ones you can see looking at you.

Thank you - this is profoundly deep & rich material to explore. It bears noting Jung started his relationship with Toni Wolff in 1913 - she was crucial in Jung actualizing his joy & wholeness which included his sexuality - Toni Wolff played a critical role in the material recorded in the Red Book. There is no mention of Toni Wolff in Jung’s biography to keep him as reputable and sanitized as possible. However, Toni Wolff played a vital & influential role in Jung’s life & work. The grappling of his unconscious given context - a 19th century German patriarchal male & structure - well of course the devil showed up. :) Jung was human & he reflected his times. The social mores of the time were repressive, not only for women, but also for men.

@@GoldenGirls33 Yes! The Evil Eve projected outward - fear of the feminine. This collective pernicious fear was at the root of the witch burnings. Jung was dancing in the flames - grappling with the fire of his erotic chthonic nature - the devil! It was through his relationships with women that he lived his full sexuality, intimacy & embodied Eros - essential to his wholeness/inner marriage. Jung birthed much of his work through his relationships with women - his relationship with his patient Sabina Spielrein - stigmatized as his “hysterical mistress” was a key figure in the history of psychoanalytical thought - her work was suppressed by both Jung & Freud. Given our time - we can reclaim & honor the Feminine element - Jung called the Feminine the “Mediatrix” - the life-giving bridge between the conscious & unconscious. The soul of the world needs the immense love in the heart of the Feminine!

I am come as a light into a world that does deny itself everything.
It does this simply by dissociating itself from everything.
It is therefore an illusion of isolation, maintained by fear of the same loneliness that is its illusion.
I said that I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
That is why I am the light of the world.
If I am with you in the loneliness of the world, the loneliness is gone.
You cannot maintain the illusion of loneliness if you are not alone.
My purpose, then, is still to overcome the world.
I do not attack it, but my light must dispel it because of what it is.
Light does not attack darkness, but it does shine it away.
If my light goes with you everywhere, you shine it away with me.
The light becomes ours, and you cannot abide in darkness any more than darkness can abide wherever you go.
The remembrance of me is the remembrance of yourself, and of Him Who sent me to you.

You can't have joy without safety and you can't have safety without a good defense and that is where the devil comes in. You can't have a good defense unless you are willing to repel harm with harm, evil with evil, pain with pain. You can never repel pain with pleasure. You'd just get more pain.
So ironically you need the devil to have joy. You need a piece of evil in you to protect yourself from aggressors. That piece of the devil in you has to constantly be active and strong, but do not use it toward non-aggressors, that is very important. So yes, the devil ironically is the source of life and survival in us. Without it we would all be like dead rabbits on this planet long ago.

Thank you Joseph for creating this thought provoking content. I, after going through severe Covid and now Long Covid can relate to what Jung was stating about the “Devil”. I continue to confront my “Devil” and come to know him for I have seen and experienced both Heaven and Hell with Covid. I continue to explore The Red Book and The Black Books too. Keep up the great content and keep digging into the depths of the Master C.G. Jung.🙂

So feeling stuck in the middle ground always felt like a curse of consciousness. There was never any lasting freedom anywhere else and the middle felt like a prison with no bars or I held the key but I felt it was pointless to leave.
I was aware of Carl Jung from other sources but for some reason I have not took it upon myself to really dive into his work.
    I think I will now.
    Gracias. 👍❤️

Wow, thank you. Let me compliment you on your voice, as well. It sits well with the topic. Reminds me a bit of Dan Carlin’s voice.
Anyway, I wanna get my hands on this book, but it’s price is prohibitive. I felt so many of these things recently and my road led me to be drawn to Jung, only to find incredible inner similarities. I consume what is free and available to me. But the book will come one day.
    Thanks again for the content.

At 33:40 he says you have to come to understanding with the devil. I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean, but the devil wants your soul. You can come to no understanding regarding this point. Here, Jung’s Protestant leanings become apparent, because in the Catholic tradition it is stated in no uncertain terms that absolutely no ground must be given to the devil lest we lose our souls to him via grave sin. I’m not a saint by any means, even as a Catholic, but I find his approach to the question of concupiscence, or the tendency towards sin, to be interesting. Some might call it misleading. I have my own demons I wrestle with, and most of the time they win. Nonetheless thank you for making this video and reading it aloud to us

Beautiful work Joseph 💛 I'm glad I've stumbled upon your channel.
To me it seems that Jung is afraid of being possessed by devil, or rather by joy which is inevitably devilish. Although he praises one who can forget themselves, he seems to stay away from that ecstatic trans-like dissolution of pagan rites and tribal dances..
He separates himself from devil and from joy. This is his way to stand his ground - a great way indeed.
In my own inner journey it had played out differently. I became a devil but I kept my inner work. I meditated on my demonic nature, my drives and demonic intentions. I cannot claim that I know who Devil is, but I have clear experience of what it is when I am devil.
So at some point the devil realized his limitations, his ultimate separateness. But there was something in him that was pushing him beyond his own boundaries. So he humbly sat at his meditation corner and for the first time started genuinely meditating on Something grater than himself. He started to see how everything's connected. He started to feel a Single Integrative Force in all things outside and in his own Psyche. The Devil felt a spark of Divinity within his own heart. ☯️
This is how the Healing of the devil started. He understands now the need for integration with other forces. And other forces finally accept him as inseparable. My greatest religious conflict of all times is finally melting.
This is a story with an open end, as I keep digging deeper.

      Appreciate your comment...
This is the work! Many people talk about it, which you may be, but your words seem to get it. First, everyone's "devil" will show up differently. We all have the eternal forces in us, yet their thousand fold forms are unique to the subject. Psychology would be graspable if everything objectively showed up the same. Second, your fearlessness into your own nature is a rare trait in the world today. Without this, there would be no transformation and you'd be bound to lower forms of consciousness. Third, I find it powerful to sense oneness in such a dark, evil force. It is easy to feel lofty about being one with everything when life is white, but in the black most feel separateness. Fourth, I love the fact that you see Jung stand his ground and respect the forces as part of him but separate from him. Not only in your opening remark, but your own work (and noticed they may be transformed by pure reflection).
Finally, I am not sure how familiar you are with Alchemy but your words (e.g. melting conflict) speak their language. I do wonder if it unconsciously coming through, or if it is intentional?
Such a refreshing, beautiful comment. Thanks for sharing Aleksey!

I remember I had a dream two days ago when I even hesitate to call it a dream, on a small nightstand in a lowly room. I came across a red book 📕. I also to felt fear upon picking the book up i didn’t look within its contents. I felt the power from within, I also felt it was of the devils work. Just now I come to find this book is real. I’ve ordered it and I will now review its contents once received. It’s like a call in a weird way. I’m curious to dive deeper into aware consciousness

Midway through the journey of our life
I found myself in a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.
Ah me! how hard a thing it is to say,
What was this forest savage, rough, and stern,
Which in the very thought renews the fear.
    So bitter is it, death is little more;
But of the good to treat, which there I found,
Speak will I of the other things I saw there.
I cannot well repeat how there I entered,
So full of slumber was I at the moment
In which I had abandoned the true way....
And even as he, who, with distressful breath,
Forth issued from the sea upon the shore,
    Turns to the water perilous and gazes;
So did my soul, that still was fleeing onward,
Turn itself back to re-behold the pass
Which never yet a living person left.
    Dante's Inferno: Canto I

Yes! This aspect is rather fresh (say the past two years). Because of this, I do not want to say much until I have grasped it. My next video will highlight some of this and connect Jung's work further back before Parmenides.
I have connected with Catafalque, which I included in my Red Book series. I have yet to get the Dark Places of Wisdom, yet I do plan on reading it this year.
My Greek research is rather from source, as I have found a few translations to Plato and other Platonists & Neo-Platonists by Juan and Maria Balboa (search this name on Google and it will come up).
I am open to any specific questions, or you may email me at info@humbleumedia.com

The fact that this channel hasn't grown exponentially goes to show that the majority of people care nothing about consciousness while also claim to be woke....what a shame. On the other hand, ignorance truly is bliss, because once you become awakened, there really is no going back, and that same blessing can also feel like a curse.
    Great analysis.

@@HumbleUMedia hey, someone had to jump into the waters first, he had to show us that the fighting with our own dark depths aint that bad. That's the joy here, and also the struggle of the pioneers or people who are just too avant garde, they travel those paths alone hence why its more difficult to them, they sacrifice first so we get to enjoy the process later on with less fear and less struggle. That sacrifice is the gift of the individual to the collective, the first mourning that ignites the new skill.
