built this with a buddy of mine sometime in the early 90's. took us a few days, early childhood was amazing with this car, what an amazing machine . I do remember the axel split and the 4wd shaft snapped after a couple of years, but we taped it together. wish i kept it the 959. thinking of building the same with my son today.
I had the Grasshopper when I was a kid in the 80's!! Loved that little car. I can remember writing and sending off for it and waiting for UPS to send to the house. I got a sticker note on the door one day that they tried to delivery but no one home and they would try the next day. I was so sad i missed it. LOL FUNNY
Lots of souvenirs....used to fantasize on this car looking at the tamiya catalogue...but never could get one. Nice to see how passionate you are thanks for these videos
I also had one of these, and loved building it, as at that time, it was like nothing I had ever built before.... As much as I loved this unit, the one draw back, was it was 1/12 scale.. and if it was not on clean pavement, the thing would bounce all over the place, the faster you went, and the more you push it past that threshold, , the higher the risk of rolling it.. The flat slick tires for it, gave it a neat look, but couldn't run those, as it made it even worse to handle... Please do not get me wrong, I miss it, and loved to just look at it... I suppose, stock, out of the box, and a stock motor, matches it just fine for playing around in the street or empty parking lot, but to throw any measure of performance at these units, I wouldn't do it, as it will only disappoint you... I machined a set of 4, aluminum rims for it, and glued a set of foam tires on, and took it to my local indoor carpet race track, and that was fun, but, even the stock motor, was cooking hot, LOL.. I wish I still had that unit.. The cleverness of the front and rear suspension and the shocks was a great education and was the first time I learned about the damper oil foaming up, and volume displacement, when I asked a guy, what the point of the little chunks of tubes on each shock damper was for... As I was distracted with the idea, that the tubes were to fill the shocks with oil through them, yet, the instruction didn't show that you fill them through the tubes... great car, just hard to keep straight and heavier power.. Here is what kills me... I sold mine for $50 bucks, USD... LOL.... OUCH!!!!!!!!!
I had a new in box Porsche, was never going to build it, I built it over the covid lockdown period, and I agree with you it’s an epic car, I always wanted it as a kid but could never afford it, so when one came up for sale some years ago I pressed the go button, it was awesome to build as well, even back then the designed it in modular form, classy highly engineered piece of kit.
What an absolutely stunning car Glenn, thank you! I remember studying the 959 in the old Tamiya cataloge - absorbing all the details, amazed at how advanced it was compared to my very basic Sand Rover, and dreaming of owning one. All the best, Toby
Use a hole punch to create some circles to repair the body holes. Apply the circles from the inside, use a cotton bud to wedge them in then go with a little glue. Then you can use wet and dry to smooth the outside edge. Had to do a similar repair before and this worked well.
I can still remember seeing the promo 959 video playing on loop on a little portable TV in my local Beatties store. I would stand and watch it forever... managed to pick a 959 up about 10 years ago, but a few things are broken and I just cannot find parts. I might just rebuild it and put it on the shelf... this is one I sincerely hope they re-release, maybe just with less insane dampers? Nice video.
Good morning Glen!!!! That’s why your the best RC channel on RUclips!!!! Right there!!! That was as you say EPIC!! Only one problem.... how do you top this video?? Stuart good job lending that to our boy!! I wish I had a Delorean so I can go back in time to the Dufferin Mall hobbyshop and get one. Great job!! Can’t say it enough!! Still blown away.
Oh wow Chris thanks for the awesome comment 😊😊😊 Yeah it’s a hard video to top, but I’m planning a really cool Avante video soon 🤩. Which is my all time favourite car, so that video might have a few surprises in it 🤩👊🏻
I grew up in Toronto Canada and I only ever saw the Rothman's version. Although the friend of mine that had one never put the decals on his, it was just painted all blue (no masking was done on it either) Fragile? my friend would bash with his, jumping off curbs, sewer grates, grass edges, not to mention at the time there were lots of houses being built. Yes he broke stuff, but I broke stuff on my Blackfoot too. (I was 11 years old too) IT was the fastest in our group because we all had stock 540's and it had the Technigold! Thanks for the video! It brought back some great memories!
WOW. Just wow! Definitely an iconic Tamiya. And you're GIVING one to a friend? Very generous indeed. I've never known anyone like that. I WAS that guy. I'm sure he will be thrilled, to say the least. I was buying broken Tamiya Porsche 959 cars on eBay. I would just combine all the parts so that I could build one car. However, I ended up with enough parts to build 3 cars. This was not my plan. I have all kinds of parts. I was buying these cars about 4 years ago. However, you can not do this today. Broken cars and even the parts are just super hard to get. I do not have an original unbuilt kit. I do wish that I did. I do have two original bodies, I even have original tires and wheels. I do agree, that this car and the Bronco are probably the most wanted Tamiya cars. I used to work at a hobby shop. I just could not afford to get one of these cars, but I really wanted one. I think it is great that I finally found the chance to actually have get this car.

That’s absolutely the best video detailing the 959 thanks mate I totally love it I have an original 959 I need to paint the body which is so fragile so it was awesome to your option on the body 👍👊🏻

Back in the day when I had my Boomerang with Technigold I loved the look of this kit especially the rear suspension with separate springs and shocks. Great video and brilliant to see it running ! 👍
I like your posts god bless you . I have " TOYOYA CELICA Gr.B RALLY SPECIAL " still new in box, my father bought it from Germany in 80s .iam 46 years old and still can not built it.

Those are some expensive cars that I would love to build , but I’d be scared to death to run them . Thank god your not afraid to run them Glenn . Great video.
You are right that chassis is definitely not one to easily replicate for re re. This is one of the cars I lusted after in my first Tamiya catalogue back in the day. I’d settle for a compatible body and an existing or completely new chassis adapted to fit the originals proportions and decals.
Yes Glenn, “epic” that’s what I would have used to say about this very car. By the way, the Celica Gr.B also equipped with front sway bar as well apart from the centre ball diff. They are both stunning. Thanks for the video. I kept watching again 🤪

When I was younger this was my dream car. We went to the hobby shop and the owner talked me out of it. He told me to buy an RC/10. I wish I would have just bought the car I wanted!
Hi Glenn. I have some useful information for you. The lights you mention were not LED’s ! They were filament bulbs and if you were lucky enough to purchase one of these new in the uk, both early and late versions came with the “Racing” decals which does make the car more rare as most owners would end up destroying the first shell, but then when one would purchase a replacement shell it then came with “Rothmans” decals in the uk.
The real car was a game changer with all that tech. Remember reading all the car mags back in the day. Any kind of re-edition would be a must buy for me. Could drive it hard then too 🚗💨💨💨
Your a better man than me.. knowing it was a loaner you were extremely gentle with that beauty. I wouldn’t have been able to control myself. I would have done speed test and stretched some plastic...
TAMIYA Legends Do you recall the top speed of the 959? Being a 1/12 as kids we knew how much lighter it was than our 1/10’s and always was rumored to be 35MPH? I’ve never seen a 959 on GPS. Thanks for the reply
WoW Glen. How do these guys find these things?????!!!!!. Beautiful👍👍. For me just leave it alone. It’s not the first time a Tamiya shell has been left unpainted. Yes you can see the decal’s are a bit rough... but again leave it. For me what you see is what that model is if you know what I mean
Lovely. I had one and I want one again. I'd honestly prefer the Celica as I have the beautiful Carisma M48S 959 from few years ago. Also side note, if I'm not mistaken, this was the last tobacco liveried RC car Tamiya produced because as a company, they decided not to support tobacco use after this. PS, they were ballistic back in the day and rolled ALL THE TIME lol.
This was something else on this channel :) I had one 959 when i was young, but i sold it when the Celica came out. As i faintly remember it was not a good car. I would buy one if they re released it on a MF-01X chassis
the spring mount/body mount crack... and yeah, good luck finding replacement parts. Mine is just sitting on the shelf with a broken front body mount and rear spring seat.
That is absolutely amazing ! Never saw so many 100% mint 959 on the same location. My brother had back ln 1987 the Rothmans decal version. This car is now in Porsche heaven. Now i am building a cockpit for my new Carisma 959. What is the exact Tamiya colour code for the Helmets ? Many thanks in advance By the way : Maybe the best Tamiya Channel on RUclips Cheers from Berlln
I will be looking for an NIB 959 this year, so here’s hoping, my original one is now perfect apart from needing a shell so I think it’s gonna be an expensive year but these cars are very special to me as I built my original one with my dad and being unable to work because of heart issues, he and my mother must have really struggled to afford this for me, they were not a cheap model when new!
if the did a re-release of this that would be GOLD! (oops - wrote that comment before watching the whole clip!) 1/10 scale, new style / family of chassis and easier to fit body shell!
I bought the Celica while living in Japan. Fragile, complex, complete in mechanical design and interesting. Just as you described. I replaced the entire chasis two times, but gave up after that. Always wished I bought one more new chasis set of parts as they weren't expensive in Japan at the time. Just time consuming to swap everything over.
The parts on this car that are usually broken are the front A-arms and the rear body posts. As you said these parts are hard to find and usually very expensive too.
This is what I love about this channel, you get see Tamiya's that you probably would never see running, great stuff.
Thanks Tom 🤩🤩🤩
I absolutely agree! Maybe the best Tamiya video in this year on youtube!
Porsche 959 NIB. I just fainted at the sight of this treasure.

I would buy one if they re released it on a MF-01X chassis
Thanks buddy 🤩👊🏻
the spring mount/body mount crack... and yeah, good luck finding replacement parts.
Mine is just sitting on the shelf with a broken front body mount and rear spring seat.
Thanks for watching Bob 😊👊🏻
Beautiful!
Thanks buddy 😊👊🏻
That is absolutely amazing ! Never saw so many 100% mint 959 on the same location.
My brother had back ln 1987 the Rothmans decal version. This car is now in Porsche heaven.
Now i am building a cockpit for my new Carisma 959.
What is the exact Tamiya colour code for the
Helmets ?
Many thanks in advance
By the way : Maybe the best Tamiya Channel on RUclips
Cheers from Berlln

Thanks for watching my friend 😊👊🏻
I will be looking for an NIB 959 this year, so here’s hoping, my original one is now perfect apart from needing a shell so I think it’s gonna be an expensive year but these cars are very special to me as I built my original one with my dad and being unable to work because of heart issues, he and my mother must have really struggled to afford this for me, they were not a cheap model when new!
Nice car I have one myself never used it
That’s awesome 😎👊🏻
TAMIYA Legends I was thinking of selling it
Wow. This is the first RC car in my life..
if the did a re-release of this that would be GOLD! (oops - wrote that comment before watching the whole clip!) 1/10 scale, new style / family of chassis and easier to fit body shell!
Yeah that would be awesome 😎
That’s awesome glenn
Incredible !!!!!! 😍
Thanks buddy 🤩👊🏻
I came across one of these at a yard sale. It’s about 70% compete. Always wondered what it looked like all in one piece.
Wow 🤩
Thanks for watching buddy 🤩👊🏻

If I'm not mistaken they gave two sets of tires for that kit one for on-road and one for rally.
keep body clear. Nice car 👍
Thanks for watching 😊👊🏻
The parts on this car that are usually broken are the front A-arms and the rear body posts. As you said these parts are hard to find and usually very expensive too.
I forgot to mention the body is always broken.
Thanks as always for watching buddy 😊👊🏻
Absolutlely fantastic! Not half mate
