I lost it when Fuji said “let your hands be the last to hold her.”
That callback broke me 😭😭😭
John never leaves Japan. The scenes with old John was what he dreamed his end would be. When he was with Toronaga and decided to end his life he gave up the dream. That’s why he hesitated then said F It! A dream of a dream. It’s in the title of episode 10. They showed old John as he was waking up from the explosion and after he slept through Mariko’s funeral. Meaning he was dreaming while recuperating. You’re welcome. This show was very deep. Thanks!
Thanks for the explanation! That definitely makes more sense!
"Why tell a dead man the future" is a callback - its also what Yabushige said to Omi in the first episode, when talking about Toranaga. He always knew what Yabushige was up to.
I also really like that smirk he gives Yabushige, right before the cut - I think that was everything Yabushige needed to see, to have his answer - Toranaga absolutly wants to be Shogun.
Yeah and the smirk is Yabushige understanding just how much control Toranaga always had, despite how it looked to everyone else. It wasn't just ONE spy, it was many (including Omi). Which he realized.
In the book it's even explained that when Toranaga had John imprisoned in the beginning episodes (where John learned about what information to give to Toranaga) this was on purpose to make John become a threat to the christian lords - But the awesome part is that Toranaga already knew this information in secret. But having the information become "public" drew the focus away from himself and on to John.
The smirk is Yabushige understanding all of this, and understanding that even his own betrayal was used by Toranaga to win and become Shogun. The smirk also shows him going out on good terms because he understood that even his part was ultimately good for Toranaga and this gave him a good death 😁
Old John wasnt real. That was just Johns vision on where he'd end up.
He spends the rest of his life in Japan. Never goes home.
They didn’t really explain it well enough. Most people I know thought it was a flash forward.
@darrellhenry9152 yeah but him dropping the cross in the lake should be the indicator.
And toranaga saying he will never leave japan.
@@immortal5626 And the fact every time they showed old John he was unconscious or saying F It when he decided to end his life for the village. I thought it was pretty clear and very clever.
@@jdsthird yep exactly.
@@jdsthirdpeople just weren’t paying attention.
We thought we were rooting for a Ned Stark but he was really a Tywin Lannister.
S tier reference
Almost everything in this episode was a call back, "Well, come on then" to Kiyama's samurai, "Let your hands be the last", "Why tell a dead man the future"
Toranaga had two goals with Crimson Sky: He wanted Ishido's hostages to be released, in order to weaken him. That could conceivably have been achieved without Mariko dying. But his second goal was to pry Ochiba away from Ishido. And that could only ever happen the way it did: Ochiba's love for her childhood friend took over once she lost her, and it made her resent Ishido. (It made everyone resent Ishido, but especially Ochiba). All in all it became a one-two punch that completely turned everything (and everyone) in Toranaga's favour.
that falcon "helmet" is called a hood. It's used in training the falcon. It's a blinder to keep the bird from getting stressed. And there are some very elaborate hoods out there.
I was going to say this, but saw you had beat me to it. 🙂
The "helmet" on the falcon is to cover its eyes and keep it calm. That's often done with any bird of prey trained to hunt. Also racehorses.
In the book Fuji dies! In the miniseries Fuji changed her mind and stayed with John!
I like that second option! - Blake
he never goes home, it was a dream.
The explanation of "wind" given by the man wearing the hat on the right is thought-provoking. Is he a literary genius?
Yes, the plan was for Mariko to either open a way for the hostages in Osaka to leave or to die. Both ways she would have weakend Ishido and make other Lords switch side. Thats why the Shinobi didnt try to kill, but to capture her (as you can clearly see in Ep9 - they try to carry her away) - that would have given Ishido a reason to seal the castle again, without killing Mariko.
Mariko knew that, so she went to the door. Yabushige only let the Shinobi in, bcs he thought they would only capture her - his regret is real.
The best reaction channel out there!!
Facts!
The original 1980s miniseries was just released on paramount plus.
Most of you are too young to remember the original Shogun back in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain and Yoko Shimada it's still one of the best stories I've ever seen. Shogun 1980 I put it in my top five all time greats. This new Shogun is great as well I love Mariko Sama.
The Detailed scope of the show is brilliant you can look anywhere and see something of interest
There is confirmation of 2 more seasons but it's too early to assume its a continuation of the story. It can be an anthology of a different tales of Toronaga or another character.
Blake to Corey "are you ever wrong?" Corey "yeah" Blake "nothing" 😂😂😂
Great to hear your end thoughts dudes, new subscriber!
Yabushige's death poem in the book was so much better
What are clouds
Except an excuse for the sky
What is life
But an escape from death
Toranaga would have to assign another consort to John. I wonder who it would be.
That scene with John and Fuji is so beautiful, i just cant get over it. Only the best for Fuji-sama❤
Well, since they officially announced theyre gonna go ahead and do more seasons I gotta wonder if it's even gonna be worth it without Yabu?! His grunts are going to be dearly missed. I'll watch it, obviously, even though im still not sure how i feel about extending something that was already so complete. They better bring Fuji back, thats my main request. Show me her as a cute little nun with a gun.
So, if you aren’t aware, the character of Toranaga is based upon the real life Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. While there is no source material in novel form, there is plenty of recorded history to draw upon. A second season could be glorious or mediocre, hopefully the former
Ever considered The Last Kingdom?
they’re doing a season 2 AND 3! i know it’s based on history so there’s material but as much as i love the work that this team and the actors did i definitely agree with y’all regarding the story feeling (and being) complete right here. anyway, what a brilliant show, enjoyed rewatching it with you guys!
React to the film: LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL (2024), a great horror film, creative, different and unexpected, you will enjoy it.
I've just rewatched XMEN 97 it's the best Xmen I've seen on screen
It’s on our list eventually
🥺
I love this show. Very sad 😞 ❤ but i can’t wait till next season. Thanks gentlemen 🪷
