Great video! Have been feeding our three dogs on PMR for 4 or 5 years. It was tough for us to change but I'm glad we did. Gotta admit it takes time, effort and expense to feed this way and not recommended for everyone. Not something you want to do unless you do some research to ensure (very) approximate amounts of meat/bone/organ/liver. Thanks for your time and efforts to make/post the vid.
This video is exactly what ive been looking for! Thanks for including the percent of food needed for puppies and adults and also what type of food would be good for them!
Thank you so much. One of my cat who is 1 year old just had a urinal tract infection and I'ved decided to switch all my cats to raw diet. Searched the internet for ages but could not find a guide as straightforward as yours.
I'm hoping that someone could answer my question. If my cat eats raw food and licks itself, can I get salmonella from playing with my cat after he licked himself? Same goes with a puppy
I know this is old, but when she was saying to divide how many grams you need by how much was in the chicken, I got confused, lol! If she had done the math in ounces I would have gotten it better, haha!
Great video GyomiTV. I was wondering if you could direct me to more sources to research upon this raw diet topic for cats. Thanks in advance. Also, do you thaw the frozen zipper bag food with warm water since the cats probably prefer to eat it a little warm than cold?
Hi there! I only saw your comment now so I'm sorry about the delay! For information on raw diets for cats, please visit catinfo.org and join Prey Model Raw for Cats on Facebook. As for defrosting, I defrost the food in the fridge a day before. My cats do not mind cold meat from the fridge. Some cats prefer the food to be warmed up a little, but most will readily accept cold food :)
Thank you!! Great video! I get so many uninformed people telling me indirectly that I should never feed raw. If they came to me and told me directly, I would say how stupid brainwashed that sounds. Like dogs & cats have either been cooking their own food prior to kibble industry (about 100 years) or buying kibble in the last 100 years!
+GyomiTV Thanks for your informative video. I've got several cats, one with digestive problems. Surprised when you said while feeding yours wings, it's OK to leave the bone in? I'm afraid my cat would choke on the bone. Any suggestions to allay my fears?
+mpgsix Hi there! Bone is actually an essential part of the diet, so you must feed it if you want to make sure it's balanced. The bigger the piece, the less risk of your cat choking, as it would force them to chew the pieces. If you're apprehensive about wings, though, you can try smaller bones like chicken backs/breasts. Just make sure not to cut it up too small!
I'm pretty sure that animals are only at risk of choking on COOKED bones, or bones that come out of cooked meat? But when it's raw, as it is in the wild, it's safe (and necessary, for a balanced diet)...
Thank you for the video!! It helps a lot though I was also lost with the math..I've seen quite a few youtubers grinding the bones and meat, as a person who doesn't have a grinder, I find it hard to prepare a raw food diet...Until I found your video!! PS..how do you warm up the food? I've heard that cats don't like cold food..
I have some questions regarding the raw diet and was wondering if you can provide me some answers. Since cats get their water from their prey, do you think the meat we give them have enough water for them? I find that people who grind the meat and bones tend to add water and egg yolk to it, are egg yolks necessary??
for those not liking the math, if you google "raw dog food calculator" you will get a calculator where you type in the weight and how active the dog is and in what stage of life it currently is...this calculator will tell you in lbs or kg how much musclemeat you need, organ, meaty bones etc etc per day.
Lately, I've started including a small amount of pureed veggies (usually some greens, along with steamed sweet potato or similar starch, and some other veggies). This was introduced after I read Dog Food Logic. I think dogs can benefit from some veggies in their diet! For cats, I think it's less necessary, but I do have one cat who is prone to getting constipation. The addition of veggies has helped. (But I add a small amount only and stay away from veggies with a high glycemic index)
+SexySheerah Hi, sorry for the delayed reply! RUclips has been giving me trouble. My dog gets fruits and veggies on occasion, but it's not an essential part of his diet. Some people prefer to add some pureed fruits and veggies though.
GyomiTV Thanks for your reply as I found out my Labrador girl she can't take fruits or veggies at all even if it's pureed veggies. I'm now giving her 100% raw and I need to find a dehydrator to make treats for her! Those commercial treats are no no to her at all as she kept breaking out with little red bumps and sometimes which will have pus in it. So, when I stop giving her fruits or veggies the little red bumps subside and when I give her again it will come back quite immediate so that is why I know she cannot take fruits or veggies. I wonder if other dogs have similar problem. I'm just worried she might have pancreatic issue which makes her unable to partake any fruits or veggies, not even occasionally
I have an 8 month old kitten that is already on a semi raw diet that i buy pre-made but i want to make it myself. Taurine is huge for cats since they cannot make it themselves. Do you add any taurine into the diets for your cats or do you solely rely on what is already contained within the meat? I have also seen a lot of raw diets that contain veggies and notice that my kitten loves to munch on grass when outside. do you know why some obligate diets not contain greens?
+SinZonde I rely on the taurine that exists in the meat. That is why I buy so much red meat and heart (since they have the most amount of taurine). As obligate carnivores, cats do not get much out of eating greens and veggies, but it can still be helpful in giving them fiber! I feed mine organically grown cat grass that I grow at home (they are welcome to chew on it and eat it as they please), but most of mine only do this when they have a hairball they need to cough up lol!
Thank You for the advise! I really appreciate it. I had not thought of growing my own grass for him. Do you buy a kit from the stores or is there an organic grass seed brand that you like to use instead? I would probably try and find a grass seed that I could replant as he continued to go through it.
Thank you very much! I will have to look up that brand and see if I can locate it in my area. I also did some research on barley and wheat grass since I have some barley grass seeds left over from my chickens and found that it is just as good for cat roughage as chickens because of the amount of vitamins and nutrients that are within the young shoots. I will probably end up trying both if I can find the cosmic cat grass and blend them together. :) Thank You again!
+SinZonde no problem! I believe Cosmic Catnip uses a variety of grass seeds from barley to wheat. I'm sure the barley will be just fine for your kitty!
They should be able to handle it unless they are in the process of transitioning and are unfamiliar with dealing with larger pieces. Importantly for cats, grinding the meat decreases taurine content because the increased surface area allows more contact with bacteria, which also use the taurine.
Hello, I just got a kitten two weeks ago and have been researching raw food diets pretty much this entire month. I was wondering if you could help me out! I would rather email my questions to you if you don't mind?
+Kelly Le Hi Kelly, sorry for the delayed reply! RUclips has been giving me some trouble, not allowing me to reply to comments. I would definitely be more than happy to help you out. If you would like you can ask me the comments below, or you could send me a direct message via my instagram, gyomii :)
Hi, is it necessary to feed my cats organic meats? I live in Canada as well, i wonder where did you buy the meat for your cats? Is it ok to feed my cats those meat which i buy from the general supermarkets? Thanks!
Canadian beef is hormone/antibiotic-free! I personally do not feed organic, and haven't found any adverse effects from not feeding organic. If I had the monetary capabilities, I def would do organic to see if it makes a difference though!
Hello, thank you so much for the video. I've been wanting to feed my 11 lb pomeranian raw for a while now but I don't know where to start. I've been looking for a holistic vet but really the options are limited here in NYC. When I spoke with my current vet on feeding raw he wasn't against it, but he wasn't for it either, saying how my dog may get sick from bacteria and bc of her age (age is 13 yrs old). I still want to get her on raw, bc I feel it will be healthier for her and I want her to live as long as possible. But I really can't figure out how much I should feed her, and what to feed her. I know 2% of her ideal weight, so if I want her to be 10 lbs I would feed 0.2lbs,and so 0.16 lbs should be muscle meat, 0.02 lbs should be bone, and 0.01 lbs should be liver , while 0.01 should be other organ. But if I give, let's say a chicken feet, or a drumstick, how much bone /meat is there to that? And how much of it would I give? Sorry for such a long comment, but thanks in advance, and thank you for the video! :)
+Kaela Lee Hi Kaela! Nice to see a fellow Pom owner making a switch to raw! If you'd like to make it simpler on yourself, then I would suggest feeding the video's suggested bones (wings). Drumsticks, imo, are way too big/heavy for toy breeds (I learned the hard way!), so I would stick to smaller boned items such as quails, chicken wings/backs/carcasses, and rabbits. Quails and rabbits are both 10% bone, so you could feed them as whole meals (not counting the organs!). With my own Pomeranian mix (7 lbs) I feed most chicken carcasses as they are cheap, easy to butcher and easier for your dog to chew up. If you choose to feed carcasses you can count them to be 100% bone, but give yourself a little leeway so instead of 0.02 lbs of carcass flat, I would feed approximately 0.02-0.04 lbs of carcass depending on the cut (so if there's some more meat left on the bone, etc.). The other option is to use chicken wings as I have done in the video, which are approximately 44% bone. If you are doing so you can follow the above formula in the video description :) There are also websites you can visit that should give you the approximate bone percentage breakdowns of popular cuts of meat, but I strongly encourage you to stick to mostly smaller animals as toy breeds do have smaller teeth!
+GyomiTV Wow thank you so much for such a quick and thorough reply! Aw you have a pom too?! I thought it looked like one at the beginning of the video, but wasn't sure if it was a pom or long haired chi xD I also thought to myself that legs and thighs and etc would be alittle too much, but in so many videos I see they give legs, thighs, etc - but I guess they are also bigger dogs too. I went out and bought a whole organic, pasture raised chicken and will try to give her a wing tomorrow :) I also got organic chicken feet - I heard they were a good natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin - and for my 13 year old Yumechan I think it might help her. Thank you so much again! I'm going to subscribe, and will be looking forward to your other videos! :) P.S. It's so funny because I just saw you have 2 black cats and a black pom. - I have 2 white/blondish - orange cats, and 1 white blondish-orange pom xD haha
No problem! Meeko is most probably a purebred Pom, but he is possibly a Pomeranian x Chihuahua! We don't know for sure because he is a rescue from a puppy mill seizure. Organic chicken feet are a great addition to her diet! I would count them probably as mostly bone (so like the chicken carcass) :) And yes, some dogs can handle larger bones -- it really comes down to your own dog, their size and their chewing style! That's very funny because I actually have one black cat, one tabby and one orange tabby! When I went to adopt a dog, I was actually interested in Meeko's brother, who was a blonde/orangey Pom, but I ended up with my little black fluff ball instead ^^
+GyomiTV Lol aww that's awesome that you found him at a rescue shelter - he's such a beautiful boy! :) Yayy for chicken feet!! :) I figured if they could get glucosamine and chondroitin a natural way, then why not xD Also, thank you so much for doing what you do. Having so many little critters, you are no doubt an animal lover and did your research to feed them right!
You said proportion muscle meat wings and organs into total weight proportion, but the wings contain bone and meat. Shouldn't you calculate the amount of meat on the wings, and then deduct that from your total meat proportion? I feel like they will be getting too much if you just add based off of the total meal weight. Unless I missed something.
Have a look at the formula I've provided. Wings are not the same as muscle meat :) You should be looking at almost double the amount of bone for the total amount for the wing, and from there, after adding the organs, add muscle meat until you hit the estimated portion weight.
Meeko is 7.5 lbs. You should be able to calculate how much your dog will need following the formula I show on the video (also can be found in the description of the video) :)
This depends on what you can get at your local supermarket! Organic is always better, but if you cannot get your hands on organic meat (or if it is out of your budget), try to go for grass fed, hormone/antibiotic free meat. If you do choose to purchase from your local supermarket, make sure the meat is not enhanced (a lot of meat has been enhanced with salt, which is not good for your dog/cat). I personally purchase my meat from the butcher counter at a local Asian grocery store. They sell meat from locally raised farms. In QC all chicken is required to be hormone and antibiotic free.
GyomiTV Also, I have a small dog sort of like Meeko's size. So should I be worried about my dog choking on the bones because she likes to gulp things down, and im worried that a shard or a piece of bone might get stuck in her thoat. What could I do to not let her choke on a bone?
Bellacuzuwi When you are starting out, I would start with larger pieces. You will have to teach your dog to chew carefully. I personally would suggest holding onto the piece to slow them down, or serving it partially frozen so that they are forced to chew it :) The smaller you make the pieces, the more tempting it'll be for your dog to try to swallow it. Also start out with just a single protein first! Chicken is usually what is suggested. Don't worry if you see bone shards when he first starts on raw. It is normal until your dog's stomach acids gets used to digesting it on their own.
Lacking in vitamin E I think... seafood isn't as healthy for cats as most people think. And when you think about it, how often do they catch fish in the wild? Quite rarely, mostly rodents and birds :)
Nancy P fish oil is a good supplement and definitely suggest it if your cats will eat it! mine unfortunately are picky. but it's been 5 years and we haven't had any deficiencies. we do regular bloodwork to make sure everything is in order.
josh h This depends greatly on your location and where you source your meat. I would start researching by contacting local suppliers and getting a cost breakdown :)
my cat is eating only cat dry food. we tried raw and boil fish , chicken but she didn't want to eat.... we are not giving her cat dry food bcoz she is going through the feline hyperesthesia syndrome therefore dry food is harmful for her health as said by her doctor. therefore we are trying so hard to feed her chicken, and fish. please any suggestions....
mithila rane I have a cat with hyperesthesia but I've never heard dry food isn't good for that condition. I would get your cat transitioned to wet food and try slowly incorporating small amounts of raw to her diet.
Thank you for the reply. We are trying to introduce her with the new food and we getting little bit success in that 😊 and also we are encouraging her to go out and explore new things so that she is distracted from her syndrome.
mithila rane please make sure that you keep her contained if you're letting her out! for our cat we found mentally stimulating him with clicker training helped a lot :)
Hey update from my cat....she is now on absolutely raw food. We strictly stop her cat food bcoz in this week we feed her cat food for one time and after few hours she got her attack that's why we absolutely stop cat dry food and we change her life style now she doesn't got any attack of feline hyperesthesia syndrome. Thank you so much for helping me out.
Some people are afraid of feeding pork to pets but that fear seems to be largely based on misconceptions and lack of information. Cats all over the world eat raw pork just fine, some even eat it exclusively. If you’re in a still developing country, there might be some issues, but commercial pork from the US, Canada, a few EU countries and Australia is safe. Read this: www.foodfurlife.com/can-our-pets-eat-raw-pork.html#/
Cat Lover I guess the number of vets, breeders and owners who have been doing so for years(10+) for cats dogs and even ferrets are idiots then. Predatory animals even domestic ones are fully capable of eating raw meat. Unless you're one of those crazies that believe raw meat/blood makes dogs vicious.
Raw fed is best for dogs & cats. We have been raw feeding our husky for 1-1/2 yrs now after spending a sizeable fortune trying all sorts of commercial dry & wet dog food that kept making her sick & causing her bad skin problems. Since we switched to raw food she is never sick, has loads more energy & her skin & coat are lush
Very informational! I really appreciate how you broke down the serving sizes. Please continue to post pet videos and information you may come across.
Love the specifically calculated scientific breakdown. Best DIY cat food vid I've seen :) thank you
This video just might be EVERYTHING! Thank you so much!

Captain Ron No problem and I agree 100%! Definitely requires more research and time but imo so worth it in the end :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
AWESOME video! Have been looking 4 a video 4 feeding raw WITHOUT GRINDING the food! U did it PERFECTLY. Thank u so much!!!
Keep researching
This is a great video! Just what I was looking for! Perfect information. Thank you for sharing!
+sschmid127 No problem! I'm glad that I was of help :)

Janee Perez I'm glad I was of help! If you have any questions feel free to ask!
How nice of you to cook food for your dogs. I cook for my dogs too and they are healthier, happier and it adds years to their lives.
What about raw diet involves cooking?
Wow great clear voice! Subbed
I usually don’t comment but this was a great video!

She lost me when she started talking about math!
hahaha =)
Same, I don't know about anyone else but im just the kind of person that takes a guess and what looks right 😂 that will do 😂
I know this is old, but when she was saying to divide how many grams you need by how much was in the chicken, I got confused, lol! If she had done the math in ounces I would have gotten it better, haha!
Pretty much simple math but when she showed the actual formula this I was hysterical 😂😂😂😂😂
Will your cats eat everything even if its not ground up? You just the muscle cut into chunks and the serve the chicken wings whole?
Great video GyomiTV. I was wondering if you could direct me to more sources to research upon this raw diet topic for cats. Thanks in advance.
Also, do you thaw the frozen zipper bag food with warm water since the cats probably prefer to eat it a little warm than cold?

Yayy for chicken feet!! :) I figured if they could get glucosamine and chondroitin a natural way, then why not xD
Also, thank you so much for doing what you do. Having so many little critters, you are no doubt an animal lover and did your research to feed them right!
hey do u have to mince the meat or just feed the pieces.
Wings are not the same as muscle meat :) You should be looking at almost double the amount of bone for the total amount for the wing, and from there, after adding the organs, add muscle meat until you hit the estimated portion weight.
how small is your dog cuz I have a micro mini chihuahua and I'm at a loss at how much to give her a day?
Meeko is 7.5 lbs. You should be able to calculate how much your dog will need following the formula I show on the video (also can be found in the description of the video) :)
+GyomiTV awesome thank you so much :)
awesome video
Where should I go to buy the meat, do I have to go to an organic store, or can I just go to my local supermarket?
This depends on what you can get at your local supermarket! Organic is always better, but if you cannot get your hands on organic meat (or if it is out of your budget), try to go for grass fed, hormone/antibiotic free meat. If you do choose to purchase from your local supermarket, make sure the meat is not enhanced (a lot of meat has been enhanced with salt, which is not good for your dog/cat). I personally purchase my meat from the butcher counter at a local Asian grocery store. They sell meat from locally raised farms. In QC all chicken is required to be hormone and antibiotic free.
GyomiTV Thank you! :3
Bellacuzuwi No problem! Good luck! If you have any questions, let us know!
Is a single bag you just prepared for a day's worth? That seems like a lot of food per cat/small dog per day.
+Annie Feng As mentioned, the bags I am making in the video are 2 days' worth for each animal :)
My puppy weighs 9pounds how much should i feed him a day ?
Sounds complicated to me, I don't know about anyone else but I just go by what looks right and just take a guess
so how much would a cat get per day?
No supplements? how about fish oil or salmon?
Lacking in vitamin E I think... seafood isn't as healthy for cats as most people think. And when you think about it, how often do they catch fish in the wild? Quite rarely, mostly rodents and birds :)
Nancy P fish oil is a good supplement and definitely suggest it if your cats will eat it! mine unfortunately are picky. but it's been 5 years and we haven't had any deficiencies. we do regular bloodwork to make sure everything is in order.
Dani, Like how often would a cat kill a pig in the wild??
Condolezza, exactly! They need more than that too
How much would this cost for a 70lb dog?
josh h This depends greatly on your location and where you source your meat.
😊 thank you so much... we'll try...
Thank you so much for helping me out.
lungs is considered other organs right?
They aren't secreting organs so they don't count towards the 10%!
i was wondering instead of pork tongue can i give beef tongue?
Of course!
If u have a dog, I have found that pork tends to make them vomit and or have diharea.
Not mine! Just depends on the dog :)
I have three dogs and have been feeding this way for 8 years. Pork is a large part of their diet. No problems at all.
i wish i can bring pork in the house with out my mom yelling at me XD for my dog XD
I heard on multiple occasions that pork is bad for cats
Some people are afraid of feeding pork to pets but that fear seems to be largely based on misconceptions and lack of information. Cats all over the world eat raw pork just fine, some even eat it exclusively. If you’re in a still developing country, there might be some issues, but commercial pork from the US, Canada, a few EU countries and Australia is safe. They're bad for humans as well
lost me when you said cats & dogs need same nutrients
it is close, just throw in some veggies for a dog.
Your right, they don't
If you're feeding this and nothing else to your dog, then you will see signs of deficiencies down the track.. period.
wings for a dog smh quarters have much more meat n bone n wayyyyy cheaper
YZ 450F MONSTA I have a 7 lbs dog and my cats cannot have bones that big. for a bigger dog, go for those quarters!
Terrible. Totally wrong.
poor cows and sheep.. too much meat
Dogs and cats need to eat...
Only an absolute idiot would feed their dog raw meat.
I'm sorry you feel that way! Perhaps with some more research you will change your mind!
Uneducated fool. This is what cats and dogs are meant to eat! Not that kibble garbage!
