Ziplock bags are very useful for important papers, photos, etc in them. Move furniture up as high as possible. Stack on top of wooden chairs, as high as possible. Do not try to escape flooding by car!! But do fill the tank so you can drive after the flood is over. Put a ax or hatchet in the attic so you can make a hole in your roof if you get stuck in your attic to escape flooding. Watch the news, form a neighborhood communication for sharing news and helping each other in emergencies. If there is catastrophic flooding, emergency rescuers may not get to you for 48 hours after. Be your own rescuers!!

A lot of people seem to have no clue about infrastructure and the costs of it.
Vegas, like LA, doesn't experience storms like this often enough to justify raising taxes to pay for that kind of infrastructure, in the same way Texas didn't raise taxes to harden their power grid against an ice storm.
Try telling people to pay more to the government in preparation of something that happens once in a century and see how well that goes down. People just don't want to pay for it, and then when it happens people are outraged that it wasn't miraculously done for free.

As of 8:30 Sunday morning, I see the projected rain totals around the valley have been reduced by more than double yesterday's predictions. Now, I'm sure that doesn't eliminate any isolated heavy downpours which may increase those rain totals. What is ironic about this storm is II see that some of the highest rain totals are predicted in Death Valley. That excludes some of the higher elevations such as in the San Bernadino Mountains and the Spring Mountains.

Some states this way have been in a drought for years. Local laws about when we can water our lawns, operate our washing machines, etc. Our reservoirs are low, riverbanks dry. Rain is a rare sight to see. But with a sudden heavy rain, will come mud slides and a lot of flash floods. So, with the first hurricane or tropical storm in 80 years, this is a big deal. This will not just be the rare type of heavy rain that comes along once in a while. Some people haven't recovered from the damage of the heavy rains we had in Los Angeles County this past January. But a hurricane or tropical storm hitting on this coast hasn't happened, as reported on the news, in 80 years. People don't really know what to expect because we've never experienced it before out here. I have experienced what it's like when I lived in the southeastern parts of the United States. All of the beaches have been closed for now. I won't be surprised if some surfers sneak out there anyway.
