    As a college instructor for 20 years, I know that some people can be a master of subject matter but can't teach it to others. Helping someone else understand complex issues and making it easy to understand is a skill. It comes natural to a few and others never get it as hard as they try. AMD is a natural - I enjoy listening and learning from him. Don't change the recipe.

She got one new in 2002, and the reliability was so good we were astounded. I traded in a Nissan 300ZX for a used 2002 Prius in 2002, and we have had only one problem beyond dead 12V batteries in all these years: my 2002 had a bad inverter coolant pump at 196K miles. I have a 2016 Prius, bought new in February 2017 (I got a great deal!). You mentioned around the 13-minute mark that you don't recommend storing the cars as it might affect battery life. Well, since I live in Nova Scotia (rust capital of the world), I have put my Prius in storage from mid-October to mid-April for the last five years (unheated barn). So far, no problems, so I am hoping my luck will hold! By the way, I now have over 100,000 km on it and my overall fuel economy for that entire time is 3.9 litres/100km--which translates to about 60 miles per U.S. gallon. I love this car! Thanks for having these great videos to help understand such a complex machine!

    I am a fire fighter. Knowing that there is a disconnect switch from the battery to the vehicles systems is VERY important for me to know. Our challenge is that if the battery cell is damaged in an accident how can we perform an extrication without getting shocked, or worse? Obviously we need to remove a viable patient from a vehicle as quickly as possible, but if the vehicle is charged, we are presented with greater danger for emergency crews. Any information in this regard, addressed to emergency response, would be much appreciated by many.

    • @ivandakeff4107
      @ivandakeff4107 11 месяцев назад +4

      Toyota says any accident that triggers thr airbags also trigers the relays to disconnect the battery.

    • @sammy5576
      @sammy5576 9 месяцев назад +1

      I think it would be a good idea to have a mechanism to flood the battery with nitrogen or sand, the problem with the battery is two fold, one the energy stored in the battery. Two the the energy of the battery burning

    • @randygeene9455
      @randygeene9455 5 месяцев назад +1

      This is good information, but, as some may know, an accident is unpredictabble. Any damage to the battery could result in charging the entire vehicle, making extrication difficult or impossible. I now own a 2024 Sienna and appreciate how good Hybrids are, but many of you can understand the dangers that emergency workers face. Please keep this kind of information coming. A further challenge for us is that every manufacturer builds electric and hybrid vehicles differently.

    This is the exact corolla hybrid I drive, down to the cooler and all. I've known that the battery is under the seat, but had not had a chance to see what it actually looks like without the seat. I love this video, it was full of information but easy to follow, I really like learning about this system. It truly is quite simple once you lose the fear of the unknown. I also love that you explained the clicks those relays make, I always hear them clicking in and tried to imagine what was going on there, I just thought of it as electricity flowing. I've had the car for about 18 months now, I ordered all 3 filters, ac, intake, and hybrid battery, I figure it's a good time to do them all, I wonder what the hybrid one looks like. I had intended to change the ac filter but had some trouble finding it some months ago.

    Thankyou for doing this. You make it so anyone can understand the components and what they do. My hybrid experience was with the first and second gen Prius. We had an instructor that had us remove the battery packs and inverter/converters from two working Priuses with no problems. We took the covers off the battery packs he explained how to test the individual batteries and how each individual "cell" was 7.2 Volts "at that time." We learned how to clean the corrosion from the straps that connected the cells, what to torque them to after reinstalling them, how the small bolts were special that held the straps to the battery how each cell could be recharged, and even how a little problem came along after a while that caused a fuel mileage problem. Well, cleaning the straps, checking and replacing a bad cell (back then) followed by recharging brought the fuel mileage back to where it was supposed to be. Then the other group with the removed inverter/converter went over that with the instructor and both groups on that Prius reinstalled the inverter/converter, the battery pack and the safety plug. Once that was done, the vehicle had to start and not have any codes! Then we went to lunch. After lunch, we reversed positions and my group got to remove and learn about the inverter/converter by taking it apart, putting it back together and adding the coolant back into the reservoir for that part of the system. The vehicle had to start, not have codes, and we were done for that day. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THAT DAY IN THE SHOP WITH THOSE TWO PRIUSES! Several years later, one of our Prius's was in a wreck, I got to change engine coolant hoses, the radiator and other parts. Yes, I removed the inverter/converter, replaced several small coolant hoses under that unit, put it back together and since the Body shop had done their work, I finished the car, got it going and no codes.
    I learned two things about that car. How to keep the transmission from going into park so the vehicle could be moved around with the engine off and keyfob removed, by removing a relay in the underhood fuse/relay box thanks to Carolyn who worked on Priuses in a different part of California and was a member of iATN like me. The second item was the early hybrids did not like to sit long especially in the Body Shop and sometimes would not start even with a full tank of gas. Seems the float in the tank would sink. A quick tip was to shake the back of the car from side to side and the float would regain its "floatability!" Then it started! Other than a couple small battery changes, I didn't do much maintenance to the other Priuses that were in our City fleet.

    Very interesting and relevant, thank you. I'm not sure why it took so long for Toyota hybrid (or any hybrid) to take off, in terms of mainstream market demand. The fact that hybrid wasn't available on more of their models is a factor and they have continued to prove and refine their original design. Everything I've seen seems to suggest the battery lasts a long time, unless neglected or abused. The cost to reco or replace battery in 10 to 15 years is not bad, compared to other fairly common failures on other vehicles, considering the fuel and brake savings, etc.

    Interesting video. 👍 There are six 1.2 Volt cells combined in a block = 7.2 Volt. Two of these blocks are connected into one module = 14.4 Volt. Inside the battery are 14 of these modules = 14*14.4 =201.6 Volt. Not something to mess around with. Special attention for firefighters that try to cut the car open in case of a crash! ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡

    Single woman, age 69. I love my rav4 xse hybrid, 2019 so have had 2 yrs. Only 2,700. Miles on it since I don't drive much. I take my car into Toyota dealer close to me for all maintanence. Can I assume they change the filter and keep up with my cars needs?? I can't do it car work myself. I got lucky and bought a 2019 hybrid right off the Toyota delivery truck when it came in on 18 wheeler. Mine is the magnetic Grey and another lady bought the other white one. You could not find hybrids in 2019 cause they were new and very popular. I must tell people thinking about buying a rav 4. I get excited when I drive it because it's just such a fun, easy little car, but it is too noisy, so why didn't Toyota put in something for that? I paid a fortune for it in cash ..should be my last vehicle. Thanks for great reviews, is helping me a lot. Blessings to yours.

    Quick question, what ever happens in case of running my car in a flooded space? Hypothetically (of course), if the car is running and accidentally I ride in a flood that goes waist deep. I would probably lose the car, but am I in mortal danger due to the high voltage system?

    With a vehicle like this, do you recommend or not recommend using a 12V trickle charger/battery maintainer if the car is going to sit for more than 3-4 weeks. Can you comment on both the new Lithium Ion and the old Nickel Metal Hydride. I have a 2014 Camry SE hybrid and I plan on storing it for the winter and was wondering what kind of trickle charger to use, that is if it’s ok to use.

    • @TheCarCareNut
      @TheCarCareNut  4 года назад +3

      Any trickle charger will do the job good really. I’m not too concerned about the 12v battery I would consider driving it every month for a few days to keep things moving.

      @@TheCarCareNut I've read (here in Europe) on Toyota webpage, that they recommend, to recharge the 12v battery, to start the car without driving it ( if you don't want to drive it) and leave it on for 30 minutes. Turn off anything like air conditioning, etc, and leave it for 30 minutes for the hybrid system to recharge the 12 volt battery.

    Great job you're doing! I would like to know what happens for instance in a hot summer day when the hybrid car is left outside in the direct sunlight and temperature goes beyond 100 Fahrenheit, which means that inside the car the temperature could easily reach 120 Fahrenheit? How bad is for the high voltage battery? Is going to be damaged if it stays few hours in direct sunlight?

    • @TheCarCareNut
      @TheCarCareNut  3 года назад +1

      Hi Gabriel. So high heat is not great for a hybrid battery but it won’t damage it in one day. Over a long period of years it will slowly degrade it. However the battery has good coverings on it to protect it from direct sun light. Also the cooling system is capable of quickly cooling things down as long as it’s healthy and not obstructed

    • @Gabriel23429
      @Gabriel23429 3 года назад +1

      @@TheCarCareNut Many thanks for your answer. Better be safe than sorry. I am living in an area with hot summers. I thought hot is not as bad as cold for HV battery but now I have to reconsider. I have just purchased my brand new hybrid Camry few weeks ago so extra care needed this summer.

    • @KR-qp8bn
      @KR-qp8bn 2 года назад +1

      I agree. Great videos! I would appreciate AMD's thoughts about purchasing a hybrid (the Toyota Venza or Lexus NX 350h) in Tucson, where the temperature is over 100 degrees every single day during our 4-5 month summer.
      I worry about long-term battery degradation, particularly given that both cars are equipped with more heat-sensitive LI-ION batteries instead of the NIMH batteries that protected the Prius for so long. We keep our cars well beyond the 10-year warranty Toyota is offering - I just reluctantly gave up my 1996 Avalon.
      However, I also worry that Toyota has concluded that air cooling will not protect these batteries in such extreme conditions, and - rather than include liquid cooling for such a niche market - has “tuned” the system in these two cars to simply stay out of EV mode when it is so hot. (I base this on a couple of complaints out of Australia.) This would avoid degradation (and warranty claims), but sort of defeats the purpose of buying a hybrid.
      Should I be concerned? Thank you!

    • @kaku_96
      @kaku_96 2 года назад

      @@KR-qp8bn I noticed that with my new Yaris (which also has a Li-Ion battery) when the car was standing in the sun and is hot outside I can only drive electric in the lowest quarter of the eco mode instead of the lower half for a few minutes. I assume it's a protective measure. I turn on AC when I start the car and after a few minutes it behaves normally again.

    When I was 14 years old I helped a friend repair a tube-type console radio. When I got there he had the chassis and the speaker on the counter. It was a field coil speaker (in those days permanent magnets were not good enough to use for speakers so they used electromagnets) and I knew the coil was used as a filter in the high voltage. What I didn't know was that for reasons unknown to Man one side of the coil was fastened to the speaker frame! The next mystery is why I had one hand resting on the grounded chassis and I slapped my hand down on the magnetic structure, making excellent contact with 300 volts DC. I felt like I had been hit in the back of the head with a 2X4, and everything got pretty dim for a few seconds, but I did not fall down. If it had been AC I would not be here to tell you about it; DC is not as lethal, volt for volt, as AC. Later, when I worked as an avionics tech in general aviation - small planes - I got 275 VDC between my fingers at least a dozen times... a quick yelp and a couple seconds of muttering curses. My brother and I also managed (long technical story) to get our bodies in series with each other across the 800 VDC plate supply in an amateur radio transmitter. Quite a jolt, and we were left with sterile pits in our fingers. That said, it is still hazardous. Will contact with battery voltage in one of these hybrid systems kill you? Think of it as being like falling off a roof. The odds are probably in your favor, but you _really_ don't want to find out.
