Very informative video. Thank you so much for this collaboration. You're the best! I am in the market for a car. I came across a 2020 Lexus LC500H and fell in love with it. I am a little nervous about purchasing this car since it will be my first hybrid. What are your thoughts / recommendations? Thank you so much.
If you have 300k miles on your car and need to replace your hybrid battery, the chances of your car lasting another 15 years and another 300k miles are slim to none. So paying to replace the hybrid battery might not be worth it. So basically the car needs to be retired after the hybrid battery goes dead. BUT....if the hybrid battery goes dead, can you still drive it? Will you get the same mpg as that same car in a non hybrid version from that point on??
Hi Jeff and Ahmed. Two smart guys. I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid I bought in auction, the battery died because it sat in auction lot for 7 months not running, it had 211000 when I bought it for $2000. Replaced the battery with an after market one that had new cells and unlimited miles warranty for $2350 installed. 2 years later and it's still going strong. One thing we have to remember, the car may have 200,000 miles but the gasoline engine really doesn't have that many miles. The gasoline engine runs between 50-60% of the time and less if it's a city car. So the wear on it is much less than a comparable gasoline engine only car.

Great video! We were actually accidental hybrid owners to start with. In 2017, our daughter had her car totaled and was struggling to find something reliable for $6,000 (her settlement check for the old car). My wife had an old, but totally reliable, 2008 Corolla which she let her have and we went shopping for a new Toyota (our family has owned them since the late-70's!). I wanted her to have an Avalon but she thinks they are too big, same for the Camry. We saw a cute light-green car and went to check it out...it was a new Prius 2. Long story short, we now have TWO Prius (2017 LE and 2021 AWD) and love them....don't know if we'll ever NOT have at least a hybrid in the future....driving 600 miles on just 10-gallons of gas is just wonderful when gas is $3.50 a gallon here.
Every one of my friends who bought a Toyota Hybrid based on my recommendation is still speaking to me. I don't think you can hope for more than that. In another decade or so when my 2005 'Toyota' needs to be replaced, I fully expect to buy one of their Hybrids.

For the past year I've been watching car review/information videos. AMD,Jeff and Scotty convinced me to order my first Toyota. It's a Rav4 hybrid. 3 to 6 months before it arrives at my dealer.
Toyota hybrids, my favorite. I've driven Prius since 2004 and I love them! What a great collaboration. Thank you both for a great video! I'd still be driving my 2005 Prius if I hadn't totaled it in an accident.
I remember when I bought my first hybrid a few years ago which was a 2013 Prius V. That car had nearly 140,000 miles on it without a single issue. I traded up for a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid and I absolutely love it and even now in the cold weather that we get in New England, I'm averaging 34-40 MPG after each fill up. I'd imagine when the weather warms up come Spring, I'll be in the low to mid 40s for MPG. The most common comment people would throw at me is the cost of replacing the hybrid battery when it fails. The argument that I've always countered with was; well what's the cost of replacing the transmission? You're looking at roughly around the same cost of replacing the hybrid battery. And with the ECVT, the failure rate of them is rare because it obviously doesn't operate like a normal transmission. I've been saying this for years every time someone throws at me the cost of replacing the hybrid battery. Which is amazing that people still think this way when hybrids now have been out for over 20 years and how much the cost of replacing the hybrid battery has gone down compared to the cost of replacing a transmission.
What gasoline are you using? I have a 2016 Rav Hybrid Ltd and I'm getting 26 mph. Was 31 mph for a while! A lot of in town driving, but do a fair share of hwy too!
@@justinesimone5343 just regular 87 octane. Weather has been constantly in the 20°- low 30° s here in Massachusetts and I’m still getting about 38 mpg with the heat on. I do about 70-75% in town driving. I usually get around 37-40 mpg on the highway. Usually let the radar cruise control do most of the high way driving and it’s fairly good at keeping me at the sweet spot of 37-40 mpg when I’m at 65-70 mph all depending on traffic flow.

I'm sitting in a Toyota dealership right now. My hybrid Highlander Hybrid check light came on. Waiting for the diagnosis. $ P080. $8000. Battery replacement. Cell 14 2v below others. Welcome to California. They did a good job diagnosing, Quick, for that I thank them. .
I don't know if AMD is in a position to answer this working for Toyota but could Right-to-Repair help reduce these hybrid battery issues and is coding of parts going to keep non-dealership mechanics from staying in business and working on newer cars?
About a year and a half ago I bought a used 2018 Camry hybrid with only 13,400 miles on it from Carmax. The car looked absolutely new. Apparently an old couple bought it and hardly drove it. It now has 37,000 miles on it, and we just went on a cross country trip of 6400 miles in total comfort and no issues. Average mileage was in the mid 40s, although I get around 50 mpg when I am driving locally. This is a fantastic car. It has plenty of zip when you need it and excellent mileage when driven normally. Probably the best car I have ever owned. Thanks for the tips. I hope mine lasts at least 20 years like my 2003 Matrix that I bought new.
Great video. You guys discussed and answered a lot of things that people in my country have been asking and afraid of since it's new to us since 2016 if I'm not mistaking. I shared this video in my "social media", I just don't know if they're gonna watch it though, since it's in English, even though there's a subtitle/caption. Thanks to you.
I didn't know about ToyotaJeffReviews until today. Here is the thing, if Car Care Nut is friends with anyone, i am a fan of that person. I just subscribed.
Most of the concern is on the battery, I don't notice anyone ask about the longevity of the hybrid electric motors, are they reliable? How long do you expect them to last? How much do they cost?
Great presentation . In love with my reliable Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. Bought new for 25K in 10/2007. It mainly garage kept and in excellent shape. Original Battery perhaps due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? Also it’s not pushed going up large hills and high acceleration is minimized. Cleaned hybrid battery fan with an added cleanable filter screen at the air intake. Also easy on the battery in hot weather. Added front and rear running lights and a brighter break light. The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself by feeling my way with my hand and did not have to take the bumper off. They are much brighter than the originals. Replace the 12V battery twice. New water pump and drive belt. New left front bearing. 2 New PVC valve replacements. Fix a leak in the air-conditioning system. Replaced the front breaks once. Sometimes the dash lights go out 3 times a year when the weather gets cold. They will go back on within 50 miles of driving. Heard it’s cold solder joints on the electronics? Went 65 K on the stock tires. Then 90K with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better with a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 50+ MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED and a sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!! It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! It does well in snow with the upgraded traction control, but has a ground clearance 0f 5.6 inches. The electric motors distribute Torque more easily which is better for snow. It has the best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secret abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! Soon it will become a classic antique with appreciating value.
I have a 2006 Lexus RX400H with 233,000 miles. Original battery and everything still works as new. Only problem I had with decreased MPG’s was a stuck rear rotor. Once that was fixed MPG’s we’re back to normal.
So great the two of you collaborated on this video. I found you both while looking to learn about my RAV4 Prime SE before I took delivery since I knew the dealer would know nothing about the Prime functions. I even sent some of AMDs videos to my dad regarding his Prius Prime. Thank you both for your videos & keep them coming.
I am looking forward to better inventory numbers for the RAV4 prime and hopefully the dealership’s will stop the price gouging. Paying full msrp is bad enough but adding 5-10K on top of msrp is deplorable
Exactly, changing the battery is not a big deal. I have a 2009 Prius that I'm ensuring goes another 200000 miles. I'm planning I'll have to do a battery in the next couple of years which should cost about $2K. Not bad to get another 200K miles.
He barely had 10k when I first subscribed to his channel. I knew right from the start that his subscribers would explode. Not surprised that Jeff's subscribers has gone over 100k also.
Don’t forget the 12V battery…I haven’t replaced my 8 yr old battery in my Lexus ES300H. I also haven’t needed to replace my brake pads yet…and still going strong at 110,000+ miles.
About Li Ion versus NiMH, few considerations. In true, Li Ion batteries are lighter at the same power wattage, and, depending on cells quality, they can put a higher discharge rate - meaning more power to MG2, and be still within safety range - and also they can recharge faster, meaning more regenerative braking will not be wasted, but returned to the battery. Still, NiMH are more resilient to heat and cold than Li Ion batteries -that is a fact - and just looking right now outside the window of my home, I can still be relieved that batteries on My '21 Corolla Hybrid - which by the way, are NiMH - will withstand the harsh weather, without the fear that they will degrade just by prolonged expose to winter temperatures - I do not own a garage. Good approach on this sensitive subject, thumb up from me !
I used to own 2011 Ford escape hybrid, best hybrid car Ford ever made. Most of the stuff including battery is made in Japan. I sold mine at 210k miles not a single issue other then normal maintenance. The guy who bought the car from me already owns 2 same cars and those cars are over 400k miles on them and still going. Toyota hybrid systems are also very reliable, looks like Ford system is same as Toyota.
People don’t realize that hybrid cars need to be driven on a regular basis and the filter has to go unobstructed and clean. I have a 2014 Prius I had to replace the engine at 259k miles but I’m still running on the original battery. The engine Toyota replace it with was 2015 with 65k miles for $4900 walking out the door. I love my Prius it still gets 45 mpg.
One of the things I wished you guys addressed. The hybrid fuel tank issues. It keeps getting glossed over by everyone. Rav-4 had the issue and now the new Highlander has it also. So much so that there is a class action lawsuit out against Toyota. Why do they make the tanks so small that it can’t hold the amount of fuel listed on the car specs?
My Rav4 XSE hybrid that was assembled in August 2020 doesn't have that issue. When I fill it up it reads FULL. When it gets to empty I believe there is still at least 2 gallons left in the tank (at this point I've put at least 500 miles on this tankful of gas). I believe Toyota does this on purpose so some lazy drivers don't run out of gas which would cause some serious issues & even engine damage if it occurs too often. Just my 2 cents.... take it or leave it.
@@henryhonda8408 many people have the issues. The rav4 had the issue in 2018-2019 I believe. It was fixed. New Highlander has the same issue. Again there is a class action lawsuit against Toyota because of it.
@@Peace1dy I know the 2019s and the early 2020s had the issue but its been resolved like I mentioned. Even if my XSE would have had the issue it wouldn't have bothered me.... it would have been a non-issue for me. As long as I'm getting incredible gas mileage that's all I really care about at the end of the day.
@@henryhonda8408 to each their own. They haven’t even really acknowledged the Highlander issue. If you go to the dealership and talk with maintenance no one knows.

I haven't watched the video yet. I drive 70 to 80K a year. When I hit 275K my friend convinced me that the battery was going to die anytime. I bought a used one on an auction site. Some guy saw my other ad and I gave my old one to him for $150. Little did I know, a hybrid battery expert told me that, because of what I do, my battery should last me over 600K miles. I was shocked. Same with the trany and AC. Trany and AC are both 680.
The hybrid system w/ all kind of extra electrical and battery weight pack that to deal with which is insane in the long run. I have old school pure engine gas toyota and honda run great with just regular car maintenance service at any local shop
Prius was engineered to be easy to fix. Easier to fix than regular cars. The Car Care Nut is probably speaking thinking that is probably what people thinks. But, me as a non-mechanic, I replaced the hybrid battery, serpentine belt, alternator, etc...myself on the Prius.
Curious if Toyota/Lexus dealer service schedules are suppose to check hybrid vent filters since most owners have no clue about them. Also, what checks do dealers do for hybrid batterys/systems overall during scheduled maintenance services? Looking to purchased a 2011 450h with 70,000 miles from Lexus dealer and now wondering when or if this was done. I will check it out my self after seeing this great video. Shouldn't the dealers check this item during all service visits since it is so important?
Yes, the batteries between nickel metal hydrate and lithium have their frozen cons, but for me nickel metal hydrate develops a memory lithium all the way
I love my 2011 Prius. A great product from Toyota. It's the dealerships I don't trust to repair my car. They overcharge for repairs and they always have a bad attitude, my opinion. I have over 200,000 miles. It will cost $650.00 for an hybrid tune up to clean the air filter motor. Overall great presentation to share on RUclips.
My other concern is the reliability of CVT transmissions and the repair cost of failures. I will admit that they seem to be way more reliable in small cars vs SUv's and trucks but what is the reality of their life span. Have heard that an auto trans realistic expectation with maintenance is around 200K vs half that for a CVT. And CVT's seem to be more prone to catastrophic failures making rebuilding not a great option.
Hey Chiclet, check out greenbeanbattery.com/product/2010-2015-lexus-rx-450h-hybrid-battery/ Not affiliated, they just seem like a good alternative to your issue and keep over $4000 in your pocket, they come to you.
Lexus replaced our batteries on our GS HYBRID, no charge at all, it took a month, to get them from Japan, they gave us a courtesy car ,450 H , service is outstanding , they wash and clean your vehicle
It depends if you live in a dusty area and drive with your windows down. I would say every two years you should at least inspect the filter & clean it. I believe this is what AMD said in one of his videos as I'm subscribed to his channel also.
the single cell thing is really something i completely not agree. If the entire unit is less than 1k then yes, a 300 labour and 200+ parts makes little sense but the truth is the replacement is 5k-8k depending on car size (even thou regardless size is 1kw anyways) then a proper service would include balancing the cells and charge discharge test before reassembly. All which can be done by machine without man hour and investment easily cost even. But, sad thing is these workshop does not want to bear the responsible and just want to replace part as described in the video.
Have a 2011 Prius. (HYBRID BATTERY) I have been to the Toyota dealer twice and gave up. They sent me home twice no charge and told me nothing is wrong. Problem is when i Bought the car everything was wonderful for about 8 years then i started noticing my MPG was going down. At this time 11 year old prius with 92K i'm getting 40 MPG to when I first bought the car almost got 58. My debate is to replace the battery or just keep driving it. Any advice would be helpful, thankyou. One other thing that is noticeable. Most mornings I get in the car and start driving and it goes from full to two Bars and has to charge up each and every day now. Toyota quoted me $3100. Drive or replace? I'm leaning drive it for the price to replace for NEW.
Hello I love your philosophy and thanks for your videos in youtube. I have 2 questions about hybrids. I hope you can answer. 1-Does a hybrid vehicle need to be warmed up in the cold? Imagine it is 5 degrees and my toyota hybrid has been sitting for 2 days outside, do you need to push the start button and depress the gas pedal to force the gas engine to start so that it gets warm for 5 min or so before you can drive away? Or can you drive away right after pressing the engine start no matter how cold it is outside? 2- When you remote start a toyota hybrid, does it start the gas engine in order to heat up or cool the cabin?

Thank you so much. That is so thoughtful and kind of you. I’m glad you’re part of my channel now. I look forward to talking with you.
AMD is awesome! Very honest and knowledgeable. Can someone tell me what Toyota does with the old batteries? Can they be recycled?
I had to take a double take! I subscribe to both you! Awesome seeing you on the same video!
I'm sitting in a Toyota dealership right now. My hybrid Highlander Hybrid check light came on. Waiting for the diagnosis.
$ P080. $8000. Battery replacement. Cell 14 2v below others. Welcome to California.
They did a good job diagnosing, Quick, for that I thank them. .
Sheesh.Did you get it replaced?
Too much money on battery, I think it's not worth having a hybrid if what you saved will be spent on battery replacement .
I don't know if AMD is in a position to answer this working for Toyota but could Right-to-Repair help reduce these hybrid battery issues and is coding of parts going to keep non-dealership mechanics from staying in business and working on newer cars?
I have a 2007 highlander hybrid with 280k miles on it and still killing it. Original hybrid battery
That's pretty cool you are interviewing him. I enjoyed watching both your channels!
That’s awesome thanks!!
Thecarnut is a godly man. Very knowledgable and educational.
I have a 2006 Lexus RX400H with 233,000 miles. Original battery and everything still works as new. Only problem I had with decreased MPG’s was a stuck rear rotor. Once that was fixed MPG’s we’re back to normal.
This is amazing! Looking forward to buy myself a 2009-2012 Lexus RX 450h. 👍
very helpful video and I am subscriber to both of you..solid video....✅️💯
Thank you both. As much as I love to watch and learn from each of you individually, you’re even better as a team!
Two amazing youtube channels coming together at once? This is almost as good of a crossover as Spider Man No Way Home's about to be!
And by the way, my daughter and I are going to see it tomorrow!!!!
@@Toyotajeff Oh, do enjoy! I'm going to see tonight, couldn't wait for friday lol.
When I started looking into buying a Toyota Sienna this channel and the car care nut are the best resources.
Great video and exchange. Good chemistry for both speakers. More DIY maintenance videos for all hybrids. Specifically 2016-2018 rav4 hybrid plz :)
Exactly, changing the battery is not a big deal. I have a 2009 Prius that I'm ensuring goes another 200000 miles. I'm planning I'll have to do a battery in the next couple of years which should cost about $2K. Not bad to get another 200K miles.
What a great Q&A! Thanks for the share
Woww not too long ago he had just received the 100k subscribers plate. Now he's up to almost 200k.
He barely had 10k when I first subscribed to his channel. I knew right from the start that his subscribers would explode. Not surprised that Jeff's subscribers has gone over 100k also.
I really like To listen to AMD because he so relatable. AMD seems to like to teach .
He’s an even better person “in real life”….Nothing but a friend and a gentleman
Oh this is the crossover I always wanted and didn't know existed.
AMD and ToyotaJeff are my favorite Toyota source on RUclips.... long time subscriber of both! :)
Don’t forget the 12V battery…I haven’t replaced my 8 yr old battery in my Lexus ES300H. I also haven’t needed to replace my brake pads yet…and still going strong at 110,000+ miles.
EXCELLENT video Jeff. I subscribe to the Care Care Nut too.
Yes, watch AMD’s videos all the time!
Toyota should give both of you a free Toyota of your choice, your expertise will persuade potential buyers to buy a Toyota.....
Love the collaborating together ❤️
The perfect collaboration. Great video. Very informative.
Amd really makes sense.
Car Care Nut is in the bag for Toyota...
I watched a lot of your videos and I forgot to subscribe. Now I just hit the button a while ago. 😂
Thanks so much!!
👍🤗 Excellent !!! Job Guy's ~ Very Informative & Helpful
Thanks very much!
Excellent 👍 teamwork! I am a subscriber to both. Great tips and education for us fans of Toyota Hybrid family!
A very informative article. As usual great video AMD. From Australia 🇦🇺
I'm glad they didn't bring it up.
@@henryhonda8408 to each their own. They haven’t even really acknowledged the Highlander issue. If you go to the dealership and talk with maintenance no one knows.
Great collaboration!!!
👍🏻for The Car Care Nut ➕👍🏻for JeffToyota. Great informative 🎥both you guys have (subscribed viewer 👁️of you both 👀)
Biggest 👍🏻👍🏻go for TOYOTA for brilliant HYBRID cars 🚗 ❤🚙❤🚖 driving every day.
Wooohooo thanks so much!
AH, it's like a Toyota Avengers movie!
Ok you win for comment of the day! That’s brilliant!
AMD is great. He seems to have great integrity. Encyclopedic knowledge.
Watching this it’s like Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, half in a cup of tea. Two of the greatest salesmen and technician in our current time. Best of luck both.
Great video. Thank you.
Great interview!
This man has helped me save money God bless him ! He is all about helping the community.
Very grateful to hear your knowledge about the rav4 prime I am picking my 2021 Rav4 prime SE on December 30th.
Fantastic video!
Thank you for both of you to create this helpful video. 👍👍
Two of my faves!! Awesome 😎
two my fav toyota youtubers!
Really great information!! Thanks guys!
Great video Jeff, very informative!
Don't forget to service your egr cooler, it's the major cause of blown head gaskets on 3rd gen Prius
Love the contents of this channel.
I have a 2012 lexus RX450h with a dead hybrid battery. Dealer wants over 8k for a new battery with only a 1 yr warranty.
Hey Chiclet, check out greenbeanbattery.com/product/2010-2015-lexus-rx-450h-hybrid-battery/
Not affiliated, they just seem like a good alternative to your issue and keep over $4000 in your pocket, they come to you.
That's why I personally will on gas only!!
Man I'd rather get a gas version right now than to replace that godamm battery...
It’s really nice to see both of you together. Jeff can you please make a detailed review of 2022 rav4 xse as I would like to buy one next year
Lexus replaced our batteries on our GS HYBRID, no charge at all, it took a month, to get them from Japan, they gave us a courtesy car ,450 H , service is outstanding , they wash and clean your vehicle
How often should we replace or clean the hybrid battery filter miles or time frame?
It depends if you live in a dusty area and drive with your windows down. I would say every two years you should at least inspect the filter & clean it. I believe this is what AMD said in one of his videos as I'm subscribed to his channel also.
Thank you .
Awesome video - great information. Thank you.
the single cell thing is really something i completely not agree.
(HYBRID BATTERY)
I have been to the Toyota dealer twice and gave up.
I just bought a Corolla hybrid. My battery has a fan and a filter?? That's really good to know. Thank you
