Very informative video. Thank you so much for this collaboration. You're the best! I am in the market for a car. I came across a 2020 Lexus LC500H and fell in love with it. I am a little nervous about purchasing this car since it will be my first hybrid. What are your thoughts / recommendations? Thank you so much.
If you have 300k miles on your car and need to replace your hybrid battery, the chances of your car lasting another 15 years and another 300k miles are slim to none. So paying to replace the hybrid battery might not be worth it. So basically the car needs to be retired after the hybrid battery goes dead. I watched The Car Care Nut videos and learned so much about how they work, why they are so great, how to take care of them, etc. His way of explaining and helping me understand the system was so much appreciated (and needed). Jeff, I watched your videos about the highlander hybrid vehicle, what it offers, how to work all the buttons, etc. was extremely helpful. Thank you!!!!!!!
Hi Jeff and Ahmed. Two smart guys. I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid I bought in auction, the battery died because it sat in auction lot for 7 months not running, it had 211000 when I bought it for $2000. Replaced the battery with an after market one that had new cells and unlimited miles warranty for $2350 installed. 2 years later and it's still going strong. One thing we have to remember, the car may have 200,000 miles but the gasoline engine really doesn't have that many miles. The gasoline engine runs between 50-60% of the time and less if it's a city car. So the wear on it is much less than a comparable gasoline engine only car.
@@henryhonda8408 I'd it actually good for an engine to be stopping and starting a lot, surely engines tend to do more miles when serviced properly and doing longer journeys, running more so they get to operating temperature. A lot of taxis do high mileage because they are usually doing longer runs and running all the time so engine is at optimal operating temperature

Toyota hybrids, my favorite. I've driven Prius since 2004 and I love them! What a great collaboration. Thank you both for a great video! I'd still be driving my 2005 Prius if I hadn't totaled it in an accident.
Great video! We were actually accidental hybrid owners to start with. In 2017, our daughter had her car totaled and was struggling to find something reliable for $6,000 (her settlement check for the old car). My wife had an old, but totally reliable, 2008 Corolla which she let her have and we went shopping for a new Toyota (our family has owned them since the late-70's!). I wanted her to have an Avalon but she thinks they are too big, same for the Camry. We saw a cute light-green car and went to check it out...it was a new Prius 2. Long story short, we now have TWO Prius (2017 LE and 2021 AWD) and love them....don't know if we'll ever NOT have at least a hybrid in the future....driving 600 miles on just 10-gallons of gas is just wonderful when gas is $3.50 a gallon here.
Every one of my friends who bought a Toyota Hybrid based on my recommendation is still speaking to me. I don't think you can hope for more than that. In another decade or so when my 2005 'Toyota' needs to be replaced, I fully expect to buy one of their Hybrids.
About a year and a half ago I bought a used 2018 Camry hybrid with only 13,400 miles on it from Carmax. The car looked absolutely new. Apparently an old couple bought it and hardly drove it. It now has 37,000 miles on it, and we just went on a cross country trip of 6400 miles in total comfort and no issues. Average mileage was in the mid 40s, although I get around 50 mpg when I am driving locally. This is a fantastic car. It has plenty of zip when you need it and excellent mileage when driven normally. Probably the best car I have ever owned. Thanks for the tips. I hope mine lasts at least 20 years like my 2003 Matrix that I bought new.
I didn't know about ToyotaJeffReviews until today. Here is the thing, if Car Care Nut is friends with anyone, i am a fan of that person. I just subscribed.
Great video. You guys discussed and answered a lot of things that people in my country have been asking and afraid of since it's new to us since 2016 if I'm not mistaking. I shared this video in my "social media", I just don't know if they're gonna watch it though, since it's in English, even though there's a subtitle/caption. Thanks to you.
Great presentation . In love with my reliable Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. Bought new for 25K in 10/2007. It mainly garage kept and in excellent shape. Original Battery perhaps due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? Also it’s not pushed going up large hills and high acceleration is minimized. Cleaned hybrid battery fan with an added cleanable filter screen at the air intake. Also easy on the battery in hot weather. Added front and rear running lights and a brighter break light. The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself by feeling my way with my hand and did not have to take the bumper off. They are much brighter than the originals. Replace the 12V battery twice. New water pump and drive belt. New left front bearing. 2 New PVC valve replacements. Fix a leak in the air-conditioning system. Replaced the front breaks once. Sometimes the dash lights go out 3 times a year when the weather gets cold. They will go back on within 50 miles of driving. Heard it’s cold solder joints on the electronics? Went 65 K on the stock tires. Then 90K with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better with a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 50+ MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED and a sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!! It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! It does well in snow with the upgraded traction control, but has a ground clearance 0f 5.6 inches. The electric motors distribute Torque more easily which is better for snow. It has the best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secret abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! Soon it will become a classic antique with appreciating value.
I brought my Ford fusion hybrid in to have a door window regulated replaced and the service rep at the Ford dealer said the battery was bad as the car wouldn't start. I had to tell him it was a hybrid and the gas engine doesn't always start and the electric drive motor makes very little noise but is running.
I remember when I bought my first hybrid a few years ago which was a 2013 Prius V. That car had nearly 140,000 miles on it without a single issue. I traded up for a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid and I absolutely love it and even now in the cold weather that we get in New England, I'm averaging 34-40 MPG after each fill up. I'd imagine when the weather warms up come Spring, I'll be in the low to mid 40s for MPG. The most common comment people would throw at me is the cost of replacing the hybrid battery when it fails. The argument that I've always countered with was; well what's the cost of replacing the transmission? You're looking at roughly around the same cost of replacing the hybrid battery. And with the ECVT, the failure rate of them is rare because it obviously doesn't operate like a normal transmission. I've been saying this for years every time someone throws at me the cost of replacing the hybrid battery. Which is amazing that people still think this way when hybrids now have been out for over 20 years and how much the cost of replacing the hybrid battery has gone down compared to the cost of replacing a transmission.
What gasoline are you using? I have a 2016 Rav Hybrid Ltd and I'm getting 26 mph. Was 31 mph for a while! A lot of in town driving, but do a fair share of hwy too!
@@justinesimone5343 just regular 87 octane. Weather has been constantly in the 20°- low 30° s here in Massachusetts and I’m still getting about 38 mpg with the heat on. I do about 70-75% in town driving. I usually get around 37-40 mpg on the highway. Usually let the radar cruise control do most of the high way driving and it’s fairly good at keeping me at the sweet spot of 37-40 mpg when I’m at 65-70 mph all depending on traffic flow.
302,000 on my 2008 Highlander Hybrid and still gets 25-26 MPG in the city. Original battery. Have had almost 0 issues. Just routine maintenance. One bad TPMS sensor and recently did front struts.
306K on my 2008 Highlander Hybrid. Not certain, but I'd say I get around 21MPG. Fully charged, my hybrid battery has around 68-70% state of charge. Do you know what yours is? Trying to figure out if/when is the right time to replace the battery.
I have a 2006 Lexus RX400H with 233,000 miles. Original battery and everything still works as new. Only problem I had with decreased MPG’s was a stuck rear rotor. Once that was fixed MPG’s we’re back to normal.
Most of the concern is on the battery, I don't notice anyone ask about the longevity of the hybrid electric motors, are they reliable? How long do you expect them to last? How much do they cost?
I'm sitting in a Toyota dealership right now. My hybrid Highlander Hybrid check light came on. Waiting for the diagnosis. $ P080. $8000. Battery replacement. Cell 14 2v below others. Welcome to California. They did a good job diagnosing, Quick, for that I thank them. .
I don't know if AMD is in a position to answer this working for Toyota but could Right-to-Repair help reduce these hybrid battery issues and is coding of parts going to keep non-dealership mechanics from staying in business and working on newer cars?
I am selling my 2007 Lexus 400H because the hybrid battery needs replacement. I think I got the service from this vehicle that was expected and I was pleased with the quality of the vehicle and its reliability.
@10:25 AMD's implied point being that the e-CVT transmissions which Toyota uses in its hybrids are absolutely bullet proof (tho its wise to swap the fluid about every 80k miles) so you can complain about the possibility of needing to replace the traction battery, but you will not be replacing the transmission- so that should be a fair trade off.
I just purchased a used 2017 Avalon hybrid Limited and it is a wonderful car I’ve only had it just for a few days never had a Hybrid and surprise at the peppiness of it however what I have found interesting is with a combination of mostly city and some highway driving I’ve not been able to average that 40 Miles per gallon and I’ve been trying to baby it just to see if I can and it has been averaging around 34 to 35 miles per gallon the car is in excellent condition from what I see and can tell and I didn’t noticed The filter or the vent for the battery looked to be clogged and I vacuumed it and cleared it out I have ordered a filter for the AC which is in the dashboard it hasn’t gotten here yet but I took the one that’s in there and it looks though it’s relatively clogged or dirty and I vacuumed it and put it back in what else could be causing the poor fuel economy
Understanding the dialog. The battery in reference in the video here is a large battery that makes a car be a hybrid. The name for this battery is the, Traction battery. Traction battery. "Traction" battery, because it supplies power to an electric motor that assists in turning the drive wheels of a hybrid car. All of the hybrid components together create what's known as the, Hybrid Drive System. As well, the hybrid drive system can also power the car at low speeds without use of the gas engine. This is for a regular hybrid car. Not to be confused with a plug-in hybrid which has the ability to power the car at all speeds. 12 Volt Battery. There is another battery referred to as the, 12 Volt Battery. This is a secondary battery that does not assist with traction. It's also known as being the control, or house, battery. This is a small version of a regular car battery that powers things like the radio, windshield wipers, HVAC blower, power windows, interior lighting and cruise control. As well, this battery powers the computer that sends signals for the traction battery to wake up and for the gas engine to come online. This battery is an AGM design, so it does not require any maintenance, and will last about five years. A replacement is sold at a nominal cost. Battery Longevity. One thing that's true for all batteries whether they be in a flashlight or the traction battery in a hybrid car is that temperature extremes will degrade them. Degrade not only in the amount of charge that they will hold but degrade by shortening their useful life. Batteries do best in use and in storage at a temperature of 60F degrees. It's actually 59 point something but 60F is close enough. While you can't change the outdoor temperature, you might be able to control the temperature where your car is parked when not in use. An example is, that we live in the New England region of the United States, so cold winters. I had our garage insulated and heated for when I want to work out there, but upon learning about batteries several years back, I decided that our 2013 Toyota Prius C would do better and last longer if we kept the garage heat set at 60F from late Fall, through the Winter, and into the early Springtime. Summers haven't been much of a problem as being insulated the interior of the garage remains acceptably cool. Hybrid Cooling Fan and Filter The battery cooling fan and filter are for the traction battery. Again, the temperature of the battery and its importance. Locate information for the cooling fan, its filter and care in the Owner's manual. As in the video here improper cooling of the traction battery will shorten its life. Your car may notify you with a battery overheating message in the gauge panel. I know that Toyota's will do this as described in the owner's manual for my 2013 Toyota Prius C. Traction battery overheating is something that all hybrid owners should have a basic understanding of as outlined in your owner's manual for your particular hybrid car.
@@gusrui I couldn't really answer that for you considering the severe cold weather you have. And they are also low to the ground if you have periods of deep snow. What I'll say is, look around and see if there are people driving Prius'. If you see a lot of them, that will lean toward a yes. A nice thing about the Prius is that if you have to sleep in it, the engine will automatically start and shut-down to keep the cabin heated to your desired temperature selection. And it will do the same for air conditioning. There are people that camp with their Prius for the comfort of automatic cabin temperature.

Exactly, changing the battery is not a big deal. I have a 2009 Prius that I'm ensuring goes another 200000 miles. I'm planning I'll have to do a battery in the next couple of years which should cost about $2K. Not bad to get another 200K miles.
God bless you Jeff and AMD, amazing collaboration and both of you have changed my path from buying Hondas in the last 3 decades to buying a Toyota in the last year. For me before I got my 2010 highlander hybrid I watched all of the car care nuts videos on them plus the ones on how to drive it and DIY I can do to maintain mine without going to the dealership
Try this question in this forum. When the hybrid battery charge is low and you press throttle to obtain max acceleration how does the engine combination works? Are both the combustion and electric engines providing max power of the car despite not charging battery? Thanks!
Near the end, CCN speaks about Hybrid Tundra acceleration from a stop, steep fuel consumption due to energy required to move a heavy object from stopped to traffic speed. That was also the logic I grew up with in the sixties, for ICE vehicles. A few years ago, I read reports that suggested that was perhaps untrue, that quick (not tire spinning), then easing off to cruising speed sooner, actually burned less fuel than the slower, steady acceleration. Essentially, while the consumption level is still high, the reduced time acceleration takes, led to a lower overall consumption result. I haven’t heard much about this in recent times, but does 3:46 anyone know through experience, if it is or ever was, and secondly, does the same theory hold true for a plug in hybrid or hybrid vehicle? The Tundra comments raised the question in my mind, but my car is a 2017 Prius V hybrid so wondering if I should focus on slow or a more aggressive launch to minimize fuel consumption, battery life or other maintenance costs? Nice video. Lots learned. I’m only just finding good videos sorting fact from fiction on EV, Plug In and Hybrid battery capacities and durability. You two have done a great job of pulling back the curtains.
I am looking forward to better inventory numbers for the RAV4 prime and hopefully the dealership’s will stop the price gouging. Paying full msrp is bad enough but adding 5-10K on top of msrp is deplorable
Don’t forget the 12V battery…I haven’t replaced my 8 yr old battery in my Lexus ES300H. I also haven’t needed to replace my brake pads yet…and still going strong at 110,000+ miles.

Two Prius? Two Prius's? Two Pruii? Two Priii?
sadfur8728: I saw what you did there!! (-;
Great video. The car care nut is one of the best. Thanks for having him on.
I'm glad to see 2 of my favorite guys on toyota content doing videos together, also a subscriber of both of them, thank you guys.
That's pretty cool you are interviewing him. I enjoyed watching both your channels!
That’s awesome thanks!!
In Singapore, I changed the hybrid battery for the 2010 Toyota Camry hybrid (2.4L) for SGD 5,600. That was about 6 years ago.
Beautifully simple explanations of hybrid technology. Thanks to you both, now I need find a new RAV4 Hybrid for my family.
Thank you Jeff and AMD! Love the collaboration.
I didn't know about ToyotaJeffReviews until today. Here is the thing, if Car Care Nut is friends with anyone, i am a fan of that person. I just subscribed.
AMD the great honest youtuber. Respect to both of you.
Thanks!
What a great Q&A! Thanks for the share
Lithium battery on 2015 Lexus rx450 only lasts 100k miles/5 years. Almost South Arizona weather.
This is amazing! Looking forward to buy myself a 2009-2012 Lexus RX 450h. 👍
Most of the concern is on the battery, I don't notice anyone ask about the longevity of the hybrid electric motors, are they reliable? How long do you expect them to last? How much do they cost?
When I started looking into buying a Toyota Sienna this channel and the car care nut are the best resources.
Great set of questions - right to the point, and the important stuff. And you asked the right guy. I love AMD.
He’s outstanding and a genuine person in real life too :)
I am a subscriber to Car Car Nut already. He is a wealth of information.
I'm sitting in a Toyota dealership right now. My hybrid Highlander Hybrid check light came on. Waiting for the diagnosis.
$ P080. $8000. Battery replacement. Cell 14 2v below others. Welcome to California.
They did a good job diagnosing, Quick, for that I thank them. .
Sheesh.Did you get it replaced?
Too much money on battery, I think it's not worth having a hybrid if what you saved will be spent on battery replacement .
I don't know if AMD is in a position to answer this working for Toyota but could Right-to-Repair help reduce these hybrid battery issues and is coding of parts going to keep non-dealership mechanics from staying in business and working on newer cars?
Jeff sharing your knowledge certifies your importance to a better world.
very helpful video and I am subscriber to both of you..solid video....✅️💯
Thank you both. As much as I love to watch and learn from each of you individually, you’re even better as a team!
Thanks guys both for your great video together. Both of you are super Toyota stars ✨👍👍
I am selling my 2007 Lexus 400H because the hybrid battery needs replacement. I think I got the service from this vehicle that was expected and I was pleased with the quality of the vehicle and its reliability.
I love talking to the mechanic. Thank you.
Hybrid Cooling Fan and Filter
The battery cooling fan and filter are for the traction battery.
Would you recommend owing a Prius in Alaska?
@@gusrui I couldn't really answer that for you considering the severe cold weather you have. And they are also low to the ground if you have periods of deep snow. What I'll say is, look around and see if there are people driving Prius'. If you see a lot of them, that will lean toward a yes. A nice thing about the Prius is that if you have to sleep in it, the engine will automatically start and shut-down to keep the cabin heated to your desired temperature selection. And it will do the same for air conditioning. There are people that camp with their Prius for the comfort of automatic cabin temperature.
So great the two of you collaborated on this video. I found you both while looking to learn about my RAV4 Prime SE before I took delivery since I knew the dealer would know nothing about the Prime functions. I even sent some of AMDs videos to my dad regarding his Prius Prime. Thank you both for your videos & keep them coming.
AMD is awesome! Very honest and knowledgeable. Can someone tell me what Toyota does with the old batteries? Can they be recycled?
Nice video....keep up the good work.
Yay!! Both of you guys have assisted me in my choice of purchasing my 2021 Rav4 Hybrid (that i bought last week!) it is great to see you together.
I have learned so much from the both of you. You guys are a boon to Toyota company & products.
I love you both so much! ☮️
AMD is no longer working for Toyota. He has his own shop now. Good for him. Good job Jeff and AMD!
Great video and exchange. Good chemistry for both speakers. More DIY maintenance videos for all hybrids. Specifically 2016-2018 rav4 hybrid plz :)
Car care nut guy is awesome. Learned so much from him!
I love this program, it’s been a good help on my personal journey with Toyota, being a Mechanic myself. I learn something new every day from watching this amazing program. AMD you are the best 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏Many blessings to you and your family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow, what a beautiful experience owning a Toyota and can honestly say Toyotas Made in Japan models are annoyingly reliable. 😃
You are God’s best Jeff and AMD. From your friend in Toronto 🇨🇦.
No god we trust! No evidence no gods!
EXCELLENT video Jeff. I subscribe to the Care Care Nut too.
AMD and ToyotaJeff are my favorite Toyota source on RUclips.... long time subscriber of both! :)
For me before I got my 2010 highlander hybrid I watched all of the car care nuts videos on them plus the ones on how to drive it and DIY I can do to maintain mine without going to the dealership
Car Care Nut is in the bag for Toyota...
Honesty goes a long way
Try this question in this forum. When the hybrid battery charge is low and you press throttle to obtain max acceleration how does the engine combination works? Are both the combustion and electric engines providing max power of the car despite not charging battery? Thanks!
10 years of experience an expert does not make.
30 years is when you are a true master.
The auto collab of all collabs....The 2 🐐🐐
I am looking forward to better inventory numbers for the RAV4 prime and hopefully the dealership’s will stop the price gouging.
Two amazing youtube channels coming together at once? This is almost as good of a crossover as Spider Man No Way Home's about to be!
And by the way, my daughter and I are going to see it tomorrow!!!!
@@Toyotajeff Oh, do enjoy! I'm going to see tonight, couldn't wait for friday lol.
I really like To listen to AMD because he so relatable. AMD seems to like to teach .
He’s an even better person “in real life”….Nothing but a friend and a gentleman
2 of my favorite RUclips greats!! 👍
( not mentioned, brake pads last 3x !! )
most NYC & L.A. Cabs are Hybrid for a reason
Love the collaborating together ❤️
My 2013 Lexus is300h still feels solid and smooth at 173000 miles. The battery still allows full EV mode and averages 56mpg.
two my fav toyota youtubers!
The perfect collaboration. Great video. Very informative.
👍🤗 Excellent !!! Job Guy's ~ Very Informative & Helpful
Thanks very much!
I learned a lot of my Toyota 4runner from AMD what a great guy
Great video. Thank you.
