I discovered Clannad this year (2023) and of all the anime and episodes I've seen, this episode 18 is certainly far and away the best in terms of intensity and emotional richness. How can you not cry when you see it? It's as if the whole of season 1 and the first half of season 2 were preparing us for this moment. Pure genius, even if Clannad isn't perfect and has its flaws, it's still a masterpiece in its category.

Well, I've intentionally avoided rewatching this episode for over a decade after first watching the show. Many times I've attempted to rewatch this series and I've always stopped here or episodes 15-16. When I first watched this episode I was binging the show and just bawling my eyes out endlessly episode after episode and this was the most brutal. I concluded that this was my favorite episode of any piece of media I'd experienced and I was afraid to ever watch it again and decide differently.
All these years later, having just watched this episode just now. I bawled again. Fogged up my glasses. I still can't think of an episode that I find more impactful or hold in higher regard. Some have gotten close but the king still reigns.

My fav scene in this episode is the one where tomoya finally starts talking about nagisa but after a while cant think of anything about her. Because after her death he worked as much as he could without taking a vacation as stated in ep 16 or spend the rest of his time with alcohol or gambling as shown in ep 17 just to avoid thinking about her. So for a moment he couldn't think anything about her because he haven't thought about her for so long but then everything came to him at once and that's when the tears starts falling. Its such a subtle example of 'show don't tell' that I absolutely loved and remain to this day one of my fav scenes in anime

    23:28
Dandelions can represent many things in flower language depending on who you ask, so it's hard to know specifically what they were going for, but three common ones are happiness, emotional healing, and resilience/rebirth from a harsh winter.
This is far from the first time they've shown up in Clannad, too - there are frequent shots of lone dandelions in the Fuko arc (including the shot where Kouko "looks" at Fuko); Kotomi's storybook is The Dandelion Girl; and the season 1 ED ends with the dangos watching scattering dandelion seeds.
As a side note - you thought it was a field of sunflowers, not dandelions, because there ARE sunflowers, but just on the edge of the field (see 4:44). A lot of Clannad watchers (myself included) trick themselves into misremembering the entire thing being sunflowers.

These later episodes of Clannad really hit personally for me because I see so much of my childhood in this, and so much of the childhood I wish I could have had. My mom died when I was 12 and while my dad was always a smoker before that, after that he was the exact kind of depressed smoker we see Tomoya's become, and while he didn't leave me behind with my grandparents, I could still feel an absence of him, that or he could be more irritable than usual. The catharsis of Tomoya and Ushio hugging and crying is something of a wish fulfillment for me, wishing me and my dad could have started working towards something better rather than falling apart.

Kyoani spoils us. After watching it for the first time when I was newer to anime, I feared that going by going back and rewatching it the animation wouldn't hold up and it wouldn't be as good, but really the number of small details in this show is astounding. Just the fact that every background character has a unique design that is of similar quality to the MC is something I've rarely seen, and that's just one thing the animators did so well

You know, I've felt plenty sad at times rewatching Clannad through the bros. Plenty. But this episode, this episode right here where Shino explains Naoyuki's circumstances. I lost it and bawled my eyes out. I grew up being raised solely by my father and there were so many hardships he went through. He struggled so much to raise me by himself. He would take hard physical labor jobs, waking up at the crack of dawn and getting home well into the evening. My days were spent in solitude at home until he got home. He still made time for me even as exhausted as he was every day. He still bought me toys and video games even with what little money we had.
Shino asking Tomoya to tell Naoyuki to come home because he's worked hard enough broke me. I wanted to be able to tell my dad that. I really wanted to when I got older. I wanted to be able to take of myself and him eventually. But he passed away before I could do that. His parents passed away before I was born, and he passed away before I was old enough to take care of myself. I relate to this scene too much but also see the hope in it all too well. Tomoya still has his father, he can still reconcile with him. His father still has his parents and they can still take care of each other. He can still set things straight and do right by his daughter by being there for her now.
I freaking love Clannad. It changed my life. A lot of who I am today was shaped by my choice to watch Clannad for the first time 10 years ago. I'll never stop telling people to watch Clannad.

God damn this episode. I love it and hate it.
That scene in the sunflower field, for whatever reason, just taps into something deep down in my emotions. Without fail, I cry ten times harder in this episode than any other before, including Nagisa's death.
Upon thinking about it, maybe it has something to do with the fact that Nagisa's death happens right at the end of episode 16 and then we go straight into a timeskip. It's like your left with all these emotions and then in episode 17 everything is all twisted up and you don't really no how to feel. Then with this episode it's like an emotional catharsis, where it feels like we, along with Tomoya, can finally confront it and grieve properly.
I don't know. I'm rambling. Just ignore me. Great reaction guys, I'm loving it.

  • @animusswtor4822
    @animusswtor4822 Год назад +3

I’ve repeated this comment various times on different reactions and videos but I’ll still leave it here again:
I am generally a relatively emotional person, at least more emotional than your average guy, but despite that I don’t really fully cry that much when watching something, it’s mostly just a few tears running down my face. However, in my years of watching and reading fiction, there have been very few exceptions, only 6 times to be specific, where I started bawling so hard that I actually had to pause what I was watching because I couldn’t make out what’s on screen anymore.
The flower field scene in this episode „and in daddy’s arms“ is one of those.
It’s not the big death scenes or some highly tragic emotional event, it is scenes like this one that always get me the most. This, right here, is exactly the kind of experience that I am searching for when watching or reading a new story.
Incidentally, for all of the 6 instances, I have also never managed to not cry as much as the first time when seeing them again.

Do you live in an area that's heavily affected by the idea that men don't show emotions? You may be just like everyone else but it seems that way because that's the pressure or impression put on people in your area

The combination of the sunflower field scene and the train ride home just destroys people emotionally. I've only seen a couple of people survive this episode without ugly crying. One of the best episodes in any anime ever.

I googled Dandelion meaning, just to confirm that I was remembering correctly. They symbolize *"the return of life, the rebirth of growth and green after a harsh winter, and a display of abundant strength and power."* *Return to life*= Tomoya starting to have color return to his life the more time he spends with Ushio. *Return of growth and green after a harsh winter*= Tomoya (finally) allowing himself to be vulnerable and connect with Ushio after the death of Nagisa. As well as Ushio (finally) being able to have the reassurance that despite everything that has happened before/during her birth and whatever may happen in the future, Ushio will have her Dad by her side from now on. Perfect choice for this episode/the characters in my opinion. *A display of abundant strength and power*=Both Tomoya and Ushio can now be vulnerable and draw strength from each other.

A brilliant detail of this episode is, the OST playing at the sunflower scene, we've heard that song before many many times, but never the climax of it.
When we hear Ushio's cry and the music swells, that is the first time ever in the show we reached that point. It's the first time the music continues.
And yes, even after what, 14 years of seeing this for the very first time - it still breaks me.
    This episode is a masterpiece.

There is not one thing they could say that would make me believe his father was a good or fine one. Is okazaki a good dad after only seeing his daughter a few times during five years? No, of course not. Is he worse than the person who literally physically hurt him bad enough he can't life his arm over a point? Definitely not. Okazaki hated his dad so much he actually left the house and didn't even want to talk to him for such a long time. I can't put that and him leaving ushio with her very nice grandparents while he was still grieving on the same level. Even if he had the best intentions in the world, it does not change the fact that okazaki's dad was in fact a pretty awful one.
