You've done well, Tomoya. Now it's time to face the future with your new family. And it's okay, Sanae. You can cry now.

People talk alot about ep 18, but the Tomoya and the father scene is (at least for me) the most emotional of the anime

Father son relationships always hit hard for me man, it breaks me whenever stories get into them.

I like how bitter-sweet it was as well. Too often you see shows try to resolve all loose ends as the show reaches its end by all means necessary, but often strained relationships never fully resolve. They are both still apprehensive towards eachother, but it's clear that Tomoya really does appreciate his father without invalidating the very real trauma he inflicted on him (e.g. his arm). His father, while a lot kinder now is very obviously completely exhausted with life, but his 'rest' feels well-earned despite being destitute and drunk most of the series by proxy of Tomoya resolving his feelings towards him and growing because of it.

It's a super strongly relatable subject matter, since yknow, literally everyone watching the show had to have someone looking after them and teaching them things as a child so they could survive. And I'd say only a very small percentage of those relationships were happiness and rainbows 100% of the time. For some its relatable because they got over their issues and can see Tomoya going through that process, some people like me still have lingering regrets about letting their familial relationships get to the point they are at now. Clannad shows a glimpse of hope, a new perspective for those in need and it hits real hard. Clannad and Sangatsu no Lion are some of my favorite shows ever, both deal with themes of family and both make me cry like a damn baby

I honestly forgot about how amazing ep19 was. How this series can just make u cry tears of joy so consistently episode after episode is insane. Like these last 2 eps pretty much have nothing sad in them. They’re pure satisfaction yet the flood of tears never stops. My boy Tomoya has grown so much. Akio and Sanae best parents as usual 🙏

The only thing this episode does wrong is being sandwiched between episodes 18 and 20. Could easily have been a series-defining episode on it's own in another show, but is a bit overshadowed by its peers in this one.

I personally consider this episode the saddest; the reconciliation between Tomoya and his father. As a single parent, This is where I cried the most.

  • @ewormXD

The father-son part steals the episode for a good reason, but Akio the GOAT prompting Sanae to let go and unleash five years' worth of motherly grief will always break me also.

I love that part with the gossiping moms, so easy to see that at the start of this story our boy would have either yelled at them or skulked away with a chip on his shoulder
It's also a fun foreshadowing detail that ushio draws a picture of a boar

This episode has to be one of my favourite culminations of a father-son relationship. All the notes Jun Maeda hit were phenomenal.
    Such an amazing writer.

It never ceases to amaze me how Clannad can make you feel so many emotions without even much happening at all, as shown perfectly these past two episodes. They always make you feel the deepest of emotions with small details and build ups throughout the entire show instead of it being "in your face".

One theme of after story is the value of family, which lots of viewers miss, which makes it more powerful when we reach scenes like this

I knew this was coming. I had already seen Clannad years back. But this scene of Tomoya telling his dad he's worked hard enough and the little snippets of memories of when Tomoya was young surfacing back up as he says his goodbyes is just too powerful. I mentioned in the last episode that I wanted to be able to do this for my father but this scene still broke me. Get some rest Naoyuki. You've more than earned it.

I think something that benefits this anime a lot is the hiring practices of KyoAni. When they started out they focused on hiring those who wouldn't be able to work elsewhere while also promoting an equal opportunity workplace, working around worker's schedules as well. Because of this they hired a lot of stay at home mothers or parents in tougher situations. I think that dynamic really helped the writing of parents in the show. While the VN does well with it too, I feel like when it comes to parents the anime has had an edge on the original.

Bro, I'd kill for a "third season with Ushio in high school". Wouldn't even matter which ti- actually, that's still a spoiler at this point.
Man, when I first watched Season 1, I had a feeling there was more to Naoyuki than just the way Tomoya was framing him. It feels so gratifying to have that doubt be rewarded with the sheer catharsis of his reconcilation with Tomoya. That scene can rival the last ep's flower field scene.

"This episode is going to make me a better father"
This entire show, really, is a story that makes you a better human. Akkio, and later on Tomoya, is literally a textbook example of the type of person I aspire to be, there is SO much you can learn from this show that it's actually almost scary tbh ^^

Last episode broke me. This episode healed me. This was where I actually cried in clannad. There are a lot of sad things before this but as you grow older (26) it becomes physically and emotionally hrf to cry. I ve had a difficult relationship with my father, not as complex as tomoyas , yet it touched me deep and I could understand and forgive him much more than before.
In the dub when tomoyas tells his dad that
"You have done enough" he replies
    " Have I? Have I done enough?"
That broke me. It broke tomoya as well. The story came full circle here and is to me the best story of clannad. Its the story that has been told since episode 1. Another thing here is how Ushio saw the light and tomoya didn't. He could see it before I think. But now he has grown up and no longer 'sees'/perceives it while ushio in all her innocence and purity can see them.
And tomoya keeps bringing joy to the people around him while he looks down on himself.
Tomoyas dad had no one to help him and shut himself out where as when tomoya did it there was a big dango family who broke through his walls and pulled him out of that ditch .
    What a beautiful show :)

02:17 the scene right before this always makes me tear up. Tomoya grabs the dango and buries his face in it while thinking of Nagisa. Ushio later talks about how they supposedly still smell like Nagisa.

Not sure after a year your guys will come back and see the comment or not, but I really hope that your guys know, in Japan them leave hometown to others town start a new live, when them almost retire, will go back to hometown live with own family, but the son may will not follow, something like my mother is not my son family, it's just me and my mother.
And Tomoya father was keeping live at that town is because, he is waiting Tomoya anytime anywhere when Tomoya ask for help, even he don't know when or how to help.
That's why when Tomoya ask him to go back hometown live with mother, is a sign to tell father that, I will and I'm able take care myself my live now, you can rest and enjoy your live, something sign for that.
Actually this anime have many hidden meaning inside, when you have some knowledger about that generation in Japan, that's more emotion come back when you reliase.

Hi. You guys might not read this, or perhaps you already knew this, but just in case you don’t, I’ll put it here. This discusses heavy topics, so I’ll put a warning here for those who don’t want to read it. You’ve been warned.
CLANNAD was produced by an animation studio called Kyoto Animation in 2007. The studio was also responsible for creating anime including A Silent Voice, Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Sound! Euphonium, and Violet Evergarden.
It was prey to a horrible arson attack in 2019, which killed 36 animators and injured 34 others, but still exists today and continues to make anime.
It’s sad to think that most of the people who animated those wonderful shows are dead now, but I’m grateful we still have shows like these to remind us of the beauty in life, even in the hard times. These anime are works of art in the best possible ways, and through watching them we can look back on and remember them and appreciate them.
These three episodes made me bawl my eyes out, and I’m some random girl across the globe. But it brings an extra, sad smile to my face knowing that the people who made it are no longer with us, but that they can still touch our hearts for the rest of our lives. Just…
Thank you for your talents, KyoAni. I hope you’re resting well.
