Clannad after story ep 18 is one of the best episodes in all of anime. Personally for me it is THE best one. No crazy shounen episode can top this one.
I've seen over a hundred anime. This specific episode of this anime is the most emotionally powerful single episode of any anime ever. I've seen it close to 50 times over the past 10 years and it has never failed to make me cry. Every time.
Most people already know going into it that Clannad is supposed to be a sad show, and I'm always thinking to myself no bruh you don't understand 😅 It's not sad in the way you think, so it always exceeds expectations. And just when you think maybe you've gotten a handle on the formula from season 1 and the first half of season 2, then this final arc comes along and blows everything out of the water. This episode right here is therapeutic, i can always watch that final scene in the field if I ever need a good cry
Ep. 16 and the train scene in this episode hit so hard. The field scene was devastating enough, but letting Ushio know about her mother... Tomoya allowing himself to utter her name once more since that fateful day... that pain was so realistic 😭😭 The amount of sympathy I felt for Tomoya was uncanny, like I was in his shoes. Here I was doubting the series before I started my watch, now I wish I could experience it blind once more. Keep up the good work bro. 👍
I remember in this train scene, I literally cried the same exact moment Tomoya did, even held my hand to my face just like he did, this scene was amazing
Damn.... I just remembered Clannad After Story, because crying in videogames came up on a website, so i wanted to search for Clannad After Story on RUclips, and stumbled uppon this vid.... I just watched 3 minutes and tears are flowing... Damn this studio really know how to push the right buttons O_o
Well I can feel for him, he love Nagisa a lot and it did hit him really hard when she died it hit me hard to, it must be really hard for him to talk about Nagisa and still keep it together. But yes I think Ushio deserves to hear about her mother. Damn I'm going to cry again
I never cried while watching anime, I expected I won't cry this time too, though I had already moments where I am about to burst in tears. But when Tomoya and Ushio were in a train talking about Nagisa I couldn't resist it.
Imagine they stopped the story when Ushio died and Tomoya emotionally dies from all the grief without that fantasy twist. Clannad would have been the saddest anime ever.
I watched this about 10 years ago as a 20yo college student and hit me so so hard. Now, I’m 30yo, father of two, puts this episode to another level I can hardly explain.
This was legitimately my first 'sad' anime back in 2007. Ever since then, i've watched over 1,000 (yes, i'm a huge fan), but this show is the *only* show that i've ever cried in and it destroyed me so emotionally that legitimately no other medium has ever made me cry again. Its the only anime i've rated a 10 because it had such an impact, emotionally on me till this day. It is, no doubt, what jump started sad watches and romance in a medium as a whole. I still get teary-eyed when the dango song comes on, even with its happy connotation -- only us gamers and anime watchers will understand the undertones of it.
When Nagisa died surprisingly enough it didn't make me cry, guess because when it happened my mind was in a negation state and I didn't give it the time to really hit me. When Ushio died, I cried moderately but the parts of this anime that really hit me hard are when Tomoya had a fight with his father and Nagisa tries to cheer him up, this whole episode 18 and when tomoya reconciles with his father. This episode specifically always hits me hard no matter how many times i watch it.
It killed me because he literally repeated exactly what his father did to him, and he never really came to terms and understood him until this exact episode -- even if there were little hints in there, it solidified coming to terms and reminded us of everything that had come before.
Saludos.
This episode was torture haha, you feel like a sh1t when you heard Tomoya's dad story, then Ushio crying and finally Tomoya remenbering Nagisa was a fatality,
Clannad is one of those animes I’m truly afraid of watching again, along with graveyard of the fireflies. Every time be like: “Tries hard to not ugly cry. Fails miserably.”
though nothing will top Naruto shippuden 248 and 249 in terms of raw emotion I felt, this came kinda close. ngl. but don't watch the episode of course by itself. you have to watch naruto from beginning up until that part, because by then you have been alongside Naruto on his journey and it'll make it much more emotional.
"first thing from daddy" = first blood
"in daddy's arms" = triple kill
**Ushio cries** = megakill
**Tomoya reminisces Nagisa and breaks down** = monster kill
brutality
fatality
overkill

We cried more in happy moments rather than the sad moment
i didn't know, i just came for the waifus
It's been 12 years and this episode still haunts me to this day. Every time I hear this OST at 11:16 my eyes burst into tears, every, single, time.
Yuh im still fresh on it and I cry hard still :/
Thanks for watching! I agree that this is very moving indeed ;(
One of the best episodes of anything i have ever seen

Absolutely agree with all of the above, and thank you!

"First thing from Daddy" 😭

Episode 18 is rough, like, if anything else in this whole anime doesn't get you, this episode should do the trick every time.
i swear bro i didnt shed a tear when nagisa died cause it was too obvious.. but man the tomoya being a dad arc really made me think about life
i remember that i cried like a day after this episode. was too much man!
Is there at least one person in the world who hasn't shed a tear?
Clannad will empty your tissue box.

No matter how many times I watch this scene the ninjas cutting onions just wouldn't stop
The writers must be like “happy endings? Nah, we don’t do that here.”

We all cried.
broh the first toy from dad part hit me like a train i went from fine to big big sad real quick
this chapter always would be my favorite
Ushio VA best in the world :D
Yes, the world, the humans always search something only they can protect.
Tomoya remembering Nagisa is 100x’s sadder than when Nagisa died in my opinion
Definitely turned on the waterworks the first time watching this.
Best scene in anime history

Every time be like:
“Tries hard to not ugly cry.
Fails miserably.”
I think this is the most brutal Clannad episode. I have a easier time watching Grave of the Fireflies than this episode
Clannad is probably one of the best masterpieces. ppl miss it due to the "girly" sketch design... but BOY does it hit like a freight train
