a few years ago, I was watching a Japanese variety show on the TV and they were featuring Okinawans and their longevity (Okinawans are among the longest living people on Earth). They showed an older man working as a janitor, sweeping and mopping the floors of a school cafeteria. They interviewed the man and he was smiling and saying that everything he did was 'Karate'; from the swinging of his hips in a circular motion to power his floor mop, to movements of his arms and shoulders while sweeping and wiping the tables. I now recognize that the man on that TV segment was Shimabukuro Sensei ! It was so good to discover him on your video - He is a very humble man... and Karate is his life. Starting at 6:30, that is a TRUE Makiwara post , not just a pad on a wall. It trains the whole body structure , not just the limb. If you learn how to build and use one of these properly you will gain so much short striking power . It's an incredible bio-feedback tool. It's probably the most misunderstood and under used tool in the striking arts there is. It, and Sanchin Kata are absolute treasures.

I stayed in Okinawa for a month before, but as someone with a mixed western x Japanese background, i found the place very comfortable. I have a Japanese face, so on the mainland, people don't know whether to treat me as one of them, or a foreigner. In Okinawa, whether I'm a "Yamatunchu (mainland Japanese)" or whatever else, i was treated respectfully as an outsider. There was comfort in knowing exactly how I was perceived, and how I should act.
It was an amazing series. So real and exciting that at times it made me feel like as if I am there in Okinawa. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
I've practiced shorin Ryu seibukan karate for two years now and my sensei always used to say how simple and down to earth character sensei zempo shimabukuro has. Getting to see his dojo is a dream come true. Thank you sensei Jesse. I've watched many of your videos and it has helped me quite alot.

Thank you Jesse you have brought me back in time while reviewing your series in Okinawa. I was stationed in Marine Corps base Camp Foster in Futenma. Upon my arrival in the island, I looked for a karate dojo to train and I found Uechi Ryu Karate. I trained under the founders son, Kanei Uechi. in the family dojo in Futenma. Again thank you. These videos help me feel closer to karate. I live in an area where there are not a lot of choices for martial art practice. The Dojos that we have here are not open to sharing or studying with other practitioners. Having had a Japanese instructor for many years that was not open to outside influences, I found the willingness of the Okinawan masters in your videos to welcome outsiders very interesting and cool. Thank you for this look into traditional martial art in Okinawa.

It was nice to see these videos. I am personally a Student of Jaap Smaal, he's an 8th Dan Shotokan and chairman of the international referee commission. (maybe you know him) He travels to Okinawa every now and then. I can really see points he learned in Okinawa and I am proud to be a student of him.
It was always my dream to meet shimobukuro Sensei. I watched every episode of your Okinawa trip. thank you very much. I enjoyed every bit of it. Felt like I was at Okinawa. I have trained in shorin ryu seibukan for 15 years so I enjoyed this particular episode more. Maybe it's bcoz I understood everything Sensei shimobukuro was teaching you. I'm sure u have found this style different.

One of the best life lessons I have had was a conversation with a sensei at the Dojo bar in Naha, I've been almost a decade into competitive combat sport but never have any teachers and disciples left such a positive and admirable impression on me as Karate practitioners. Shorin ryu style, seems the shuto Ukes and uchi’s are different also, all about hip power and putting that hip movements with the punches, when I travelled to Okinawa in 2010, we western students got disassembled and re-assembled our techniques, for a grading, also learning a different Pinan shodan, and then some jissen kumite, or one hit kunite. Great part of my life and I can’t wait to go back one day.
I enjoy these videos beyond belief... Culture, history, techniques, unique (unknown) masters, deep insights into roots of karate, I doubt many karatekas know this....

I love history and the way of the empty hand. You really put this documentary together well. I enjoyed all of the cultural differences especially the food and drink mentions as well as the different styles and the very humble teachers!
I am a practitioner of Martial Arts myself, however I mostly train in Taekwondo and other Korean Martial Arts. Therefor it's really interesting to see how our "distant relatives" train and where the differences and similarities are. But surly training Karate would be nice as well...
Zenpo Shimabukuro sensei and his son Zenchin. Were my sensei and only them for 10 years in Okinawa. I’ll never forget. It is real and very healthy mentally and physically. We Aopreciate it from sunrise to sunset.
Jesse sensei, the kata you did, Tekki Nidan. This is a shotokan kata. I think maybe Shotokan karate is the closest to Okinawan karate.Thank you so much for this wonderful video .

So cool, I really liked the story you told at the end, about not having to ever use your karate. I really liked it because in the 42 years of my own journey, I have never had to, use my karate. Now as you can imagine in the 42 years of karate practice I have had a lot of people ask me if I've ever had to defend myself or fight using my karate? And I would always say no, their response is how do you know that your karate works? And my response is because I've never had to use it. So yes I use my karate everyday, and yup I know it works, great work, thank you.

I am a practitioner of Martial Arts myself, however I mostly train in Taekwondo and other Korean Martial Arts. Therefor it's really interesting to see how our "distant relatives" train and where the differences and similarities are. But surly training Karate would be nice as well...

Zenpo Shimabukuro sensei and his son Zenchin. Were my sensei and only them for 10 years in Okinawa. I’ll never forget. It is real and very healthy mentally and physically. We Aopreciate it from sunrise to sunset.
Jesse sensei, the kata you did, Tekki Nidan. This is a shotokan kata. I think maybe Shotokan karate is the closest to Okinawan karate.Thank you so much for this wonderful video .

I lived in the Touhoku Region of Japan for a few years but never got the chance to make my way down there. Like you, I've studied and practiced martial arts for over 20 years and enjoyed comparing modern vs traditional karate, as well as other styles. Thank you for taking the time to do this series. I look forward to other things you have in store. Perhaps an episode about full-contact karate such as Kyokushin? Or how about the various "Kenpo/Kempo" styles? Or maybe how Isshin-ryu fits into the realm of Okinawan styles? よろしくおねがいします！

Congrats man!!!! Even for me, who is from another martial arts and has already started tha karate-do, this series has become an axcelent way to study filosophy and how the use of the body as weapon has grown to nowadays

So cool, I really liked the story you told at the end, about not having to ever use your karate. I really liked it because in the 42 years of my own journey, I have never had to, use my karate. Now as you can imagine in the 42 years of karate practice I have had a lot of people ask me if I've ever had to defend myself or fight using my karate? And I would always say no, their response is how do you know that your karate works? And my response is because I've never had to use it. So yes I use my karate everyday, and yup I know it works, great work, thank you.
