Excellent video, thanks! That is one long, boring ride when you're a kid in the back seat. Rode over this many times in my youth. Oddly, the few times I've been on it as an adult, I find it beautiful.
I'm the same way. Not counting over water, wanna talk the same state area's Lake Pontchartain Causeway length? Longest over water, but Louisiana has over water/SWAMP (emphasis intentional) bridges like the one above (and if you've seen Hallee Berry's latest solo film, "Kidnap", it's even set in the area.)
Great engineering and forethought put into building this bridge rather than trying to drain the land given that this part of Louisiana sits in a flood plane.
In 2002, my family and I were on our way from Oklahoma to Florida. We had a blow out on the truck we were in. Watching my dad change that tire was one of the scariest things I've ever watched because traffic was restricted to the right lane.
Beautiful video, it allows us to see the real beauty here. I’ve traveled it many times, & always wondered what it look 👀 like in a full scenario, thank you for providing the answer. It is truly breath taking🥹😍God bless you, Sir ❤
I used to cross this bridge every morning and every evening to and from work I’ve been here all my life life but it’s something about the sun rising and setting on this bridge it’s breathtaking and beautiful and for me it’s home
Without traffic it’s about 25mins to cross going about 60mph 55mph if you’re a truck driver (18 wheelers) they have to stay in the right hand lane of the bridge. The lake Pontachtrain causeway is 23.8 miles long so about 30-40mins to cross the speed limit is 65mph despite the approach speed is 35mph the Manchac Swamp Bridge (I-55) is 22.8 miles long merges with I-10 Bonnet Carrie Spillway Bridge pending on which direction you go at the end takes about 30mins to 35mins to cross with a speed limit of 70mph on the causeway
Great video! I have been on this bridge many times and wow. if you're lucky, you can see gators down below and fishermen. How they were able to build this was a big accomplishment.
This part of Louisiana is just one big bayou: swmaps, rivers, marshes, aligatorand snake infested, just would not be a ideal place to build a highway, not to mention a interstate like I-10. I know it wasn't easy to build this bridge but they did it. I have traveled through there many times. Just make sure you used the restroom before you cross for there is no stopping on this bridge and hope you don't have a breakdown or an accident
Wow! We used to take this bridge on the way to Houston from Atlanta and I would always wonder what the rest of the basin was like. Now I know! Thank you, excellent video!

@@TedUhall That video is a must see. I still wonder in the third section (in Henderson Swamp) how they got the barges, etc to that location. There is a canal along the west levee, but there is a small pontoon bridge along that waterway, with a single lock gate. Maybe they were not there when the third section was built.
Last time I cross the basin it was quite sad. The water level was very low and all that was visible was cypress knees, red clay and some puddles. I hope the winter and this spring brings rain.
THis bridge, which goes on "forever", is practically among the longest in the world (along with the Pontchartrain and others in LA , and some Asian ones)(
There is the swamp bridge west of lake Pontachtrain that runs highway 55 that’s about 3 miles longer than this one believe it’s 21 or 22 miles it runs between I-12 and I-10 east of Baton Rouge
I remember driving over the basin. I was living in Memphis at the time but from Texas. I decided to drive to the NO. Stay 3 days and then Biloxi for 2 days and 1 day in Tunica. However, for some reason I really look over to my left. I was like oh I am driving over part of a swamp/ basin. My friend was like Duh!! Kat. We busted laughing. Maybe they thought I was being funny. I really didn't take notice. I believe until I was driving about the middle of the bridge. I was like a kid then looking at the swamp and admiring the scenery.
I love the classic "think simple" american engineering you find in many products and things from this time. Germany: We need a 30 km bridge? How about something ultra complex we first have to think about 15 years and then needs 10 years to be constructed? USA: We need a 30km bridge? How about hundreds of small and easy brigdges, chained together, less than 3 years construction time? I think it`s one of the key aspects of americas past success!
US constructs a lot simpler infrastructure, but you're wrong in that other countries, Germany included, get more projects done much faster than the US.
We live in Butte Larose. Its at the Airborne Memorial/Rest Area exit. We were driving Eastbound at around 10pm. Near Whiskey Bay, a bluish orb flew past us traveling west in our lane, going the opposite direction. We had to swerve to miss it. It was 2 or 3ft above the road and near the railing. Weve never told anyone about this for obvious reasons. There was a few cars behind us. Im sure they witnessed it as well. Im not crazy and my girlfriend also saw it. I was driving. This world isnt what it seems.
This is the Eastern course of the Mississippi River. Every 20 to 30,000 years or so the big river changes its path to the Gulf of Mexico. The Atchafalaya river basin is now some 140 closer to the Gulf and the river wants to shift. But the Army Corp of Engineers try to control where the Mississippi goes. Best of luck to that.
Don’t like the whole 60mph and 55 for trucks on that bridge. It’s a damn cop trap. Not to mention the fiasco that is Baton Rouge 1 lane e/b after you cross the bridge. Best part about this bridge, is almost no one knows the significance that basin serves for life along the lower Mississippi and New Orleans.
The state of Louisiana just passed a resolution to put speed cameras on the bridge. If you cross it faster than 18 min. you will get a ticket in the mail and pay a hefty fine. The speeding and accidents have gotten outta control. What a mess. I live just around the swamp from there and it can get pretty nasty on that bridge in bad weather. With all the devices in vehicles and everybody trying to best everyone else and get there first has killed way too many people.
I almost ran out of Gas ⛽️ in a ‘93 ford (with two tanks) and I was like there ain’t jack squat anywhere near to put gas I still had to drive a while before the next gas station it was my first time ever driving to Louisiana from Tx.
Lake Pontachtrain causeway also the bridge that runs high way 55 between I-12 and I-10 is 20 to 21 miles long the ending merges onto I-10 were the Bonnet Carrie Spillway Causeway begins

I had to cross this bridge four times in the past two days. I think I've had enough of it for a couple of decades.

I was born and raised in Louisiana I love Beauty of my state
Did this trip from Houston to Portland, Maine. One of the most amazing sights on the 2000 mile trip. Still cant get over the roadway engineering.
Beautiful vídeo! Thank you!👍👍👍
This is Interstate 10 in Louisiana just west of Baton Rouge. 18 miles long! I crossed it at least five times and looking to return back there!!

The Interstate 10 Bridge.

Only been on that bridge once in June 2009 going from Lackland AFB to Keesler AFB. They bused us then and now they fly.

Great shot! Been thru there plenty of times, such a beautiful area. Random question who is that song by?
Thanks! About song - sorry, don't remember...
The boat launch is public or private. Great video keep up the good work.
Public/free. All the launches on the west bank are pay except for the management area to the north of I-10.
Nice. Going to be H*ll paying & the work/effort involved to replace both spans when the time comes
Use to be able to get away with hauling butt across it. Now they have timed cameras. They'll be waiting for you.😉
whats the name of this song
Hey Vlad! Nice video. I saw it in the recommended. I just uploaded one myself showing the curve of the Earth looking down these bridges.
thats just your fish eye lens
Aye all y’all I went there yesterday and caught 2 striped bass at 5 in the morning on a little jig so there’s a tip
Scary!
How long is this ?
18 miles
Been on those (Thanksgiving Turlkey month, 1995). By the way...very nice music.
When was this built? Price tag?
1973 was when the bridge was built
How long is it??
