    This is definitely the best presented overview of the sette series of grinders and well articulated opinions on each respective grinder.

    I see the noise of the grinder as a bonus in my house. When you hear the Sette, you know it's coffee time! In the mornings, it tells people it's time to get up; at dinner parties, it tells people their coffees are being served soon. FYI, the S30 is stepped, the S270 & Wi are stepless. Yes, there are markings on the micro ring, but they don't 'click' from one to the next. You can easily grind on e.g. setting 7, D & 1/4. Good review and love your videos.

      Absolutely, even it tells people in neighbor it's time to get up in the morning, and it's time not to go to bed yet.

    I love my 270wi. I spent $40 on the 500g acia calibration weight. I'm impressed on weighing accuracy, usually +/- .1 gram. I don't find the grind volume particularly loud or annoying, considering they last for only ~5 seconds a grind. It turns out Etzinger makes a metal version of this grinder, etzMax... for a whopping $3K... makes me more ok with the plastiky build of the Sette. I only have 1 shim installed, with my grinds in the mid-#6 setting. I really find no appeal in single-shot grinders, so the 270wi is perfect for me.

    I had this grinder for a short period of time. The first sec I saw it I couldn’t resist the look and the operating concepts. HOWEVER, this finder is fast and furious….it was SO load I couldn’t use it in the am…. Workaround was to grind the night before….but that was kinda missing the point. I had to ship it back and got a Eureka minion instead…. Takes longer time to grind but so Quiet.
    One this time mention as a BIG advantage of the 7 is Baratza rock solid customer care… this guys are unbelievable and will walk above and beyond to make customer happy

    Thank you for the video. I paired the Sette 30 with the Breville Duo Temp Pro and get perfect espresso for me. I am sure others would be more finicky, but I can choke the Duo Temp Pro if I grind at near 8, so a setting of 10 gets me a great shot every time. I use a bottomless portafilter with an IMS precision 18-22g basket and put 18 grams in for a wonderful shot. As for noise, meh, I picked up the Sette 30 for $200 new, I'll deal with a little noise, it is a GREAT grinder. I will get the 270 adjustment head when I need it and pick up the other burr set and then have the best of both worlds, a grinder that can do the best espresso grinds as well as a great all around grinder with a simple 30 second head change.

    I own the 270wi (shipped to me in error as I ordered the 270) and have no problem with plastic casing. Looks great and grinds well. Thinking about installing a shim as mine is set at 2, so not much room to move. No one else is up when I'm grinding but it is loud. I found it best to grind into a container because there was a lot of spillage when grinding directly into the portafilter and this also gives me a repeatable dose (no cantilevering of the portafilter). I get no clumping and a nice grind.

  • @JoeyVaracalli

    cant believe i missed this one. i love my sette 270wi its very forgiving when dialing in and i love not having to weigh out all the time... just makes things simple and when everything is dialed in its easy for others to even make a shot of espresso without needing to wdt. but dang its loud my wife wants another grinder just because of the volume
    by the way i use a funnel that way you dont have to take the portafilter out and back in makes for a much less finicky experience

    I am perfectly happy with my Sette 30. I have changed the adjustment ring which gives me the features of the 270. I can weigh my own coffee and don't need a build in scale or timer. I am single dosing only (I switch coffee bens often) and weigh coffee in and coffee out. Noisy is true but I am single and it only takes a few seconds to grind a dose. It would wake up a partner or a roommate though (probably).

    I do add an item that helps 270wi to weight grind result very accurate. It is a dosing cup. Use a dosing cup that shape narrow at its bottom and wider at its top. It fits perfectly on sette 270wi portafilter holder. This way make my work flow very clean, smooth and fast where no weight scale on my counter. Just press the weight program and grind setting I programmed, the result is super quick and easy switching from espresso to pour over and cold brew. Cheer.

    Thank you for the review, I have the 270 which was a game changer upgrade from the Breville Smart Grinder. Now pairing this grinder with the Breville Dual Boiler based on your previous video where you recommended this grinder. I couldn't be any happier now. I didn't realize I needed to add the shim, I will do that today BIG THANKS.
    What do you think Breville with Baratza since they acquired them? Come up with a new barista pro machine with a better grinder and flow control all in one machine?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 года назад +2

      If you're close to the minimum grind setting the shim will definitely be a nice change! Should move 5 macro steps or so
      I think it would be awesome if Breville started integrating this quality of grind directly into its machines! I dont see them making a flow control machine any time soon, purely due to the market segment they're trying to serve

    I did not read all the comments so this might be repetitive, but grinding 18gr. of coffee beans for espresso on a Baratza Sette 270wi will not take longer than 5-6 seconds and for sure not 11... (except if you think, that single dosing means that you put each single bean in the grinder one after the other) :-) This grinder is not built for eternity but with any grinder, you will have to change the burrs sooner or later. I had do change the gearbox of my Sette 270wi after three years of daily use. In this time I might approximately have ground around 60 to 70 kilos of coffee, which seems quite little in comparison to other grinders, but I guess this might be a normal szenario for home-users. Changing the gearbox is simple, cheap and afterwards you also have a brandnew outer bur in your grinder because this is one part. In my opinion it is for sure one of the cleanest grinders. If you do not use superdark roasts, there will be hardly any static at all and everything you grind will go straight into the portafilter and not next to it. The distribution is top and the fluffiness amazing. If you just tap the portafilter on a rubber mat you do not even need a distributor but just a tamper to get extractions from a bottomless portafilter with zero channelling. I can not think of a weight based grinding solution with a better price and workflow. Yes, longevity is a problem, but if you are not afraid of repairing your grinder yourself, Baratza has all the parts and delivers very fast...

  • @glleon80517

    I do love my 270wi but if you don’t want to store beans in the hopper the scale it is useless as it says in the manual. The scale needs at least two doses in the hopper to work.

Im looking to upgrade from a super automatic and I have a cheap $80 Bodum grinder for those other occasional methods. But figured if i will be purchasing a nice grinder for espresso, would it be wise to ditch the cheap Bodum and have one for all for improvement in all brewing methods? I really really love the 270 Wi from the perspective of the uniformity and fluffy grind result. However, the micro ring sometimes move toward coarser setting by itself while grinding due to the vibration. It also grinds very fast with a very fluffy result so it would over fill the portafilter even when I use the proper dose, I have to grind halfway, knock the portafilter, and then continue grinding to prevent spilling. One more thing, the rubber catch bin is way too small, my tabletop is now messier compared to when I still use the Breville Smart Grinder.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 года назад +1

      Quite different grinders.
      Sette: Conical, hopper dosing, good to use right out of the box
      DF64: Flat burrs, single dosing, might need some modifications to get the best out of it.
      If the workflow differences don't make the decision for you, I'd probably go for the DF64 just purely from a build quality perspective. With that being said, Baratza is known to have fantastic customer support. The DF64 support will be practically non existent due to the nature of that product

      The Niche was my main comparison point for this review. The Sette was overall slightly lighter in flavour / body than the Niche, but was still very enjoyable

      @@LifestyleLab_ I’ve really struggled with shot spurting (and quality) in spite of working hard for months on various parts of my routine like resting my beans, wdt, weigh in and out, extraction times, tamp consistency (level and pressure), pre-infusion, etc…. Trying to figure out if it’s limitations with the 270 or my bambino plus. In your comparison with the Niche, did you ever find that grind quality/consistency was remarkably better with that grinder?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 года назад

      I would chalk your consistency struggles up to the Bambino and its 54mm basket. Tougher to get consistent results regardless of grinder. The Sette doesn't sound like the weak point in your setup

    Does a Niche grinder produce better results than a Sette 270?

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 года назад +1

      It will somewhat depend on your taste preferences, but overall yes.
      Niche has less clumping and slightly better grind uniformity. Flavors were slightly richer on the Niche, and slightly lighter on the Sette

    grinding loudness isn't just about how it impacts company, i think its also just a personal preference! personally I have a little sensitive hearing so a very loud grinder would impact me more during my calm brew ritual. i have the Eureka Mignon Manuale/Notte and its not bad but a single dosing grinder like DF64 i imagine would be even quiter.

    I brew espresso. Without installing the shim, can't the Baratza settings at the finest maybe 1 or even 3 sufficient to grind coffee that suits espresso? Have you tried installing just a single shim? You mentioned puting both shim.

      2 shims was the minimum needed on my machine to allow for my dialed in espresso to be above the absolute 0 setting. Don’t worry, the install process is very easy!

      This is a great option for you then, don't lose hope!
      You can get some good bang for your buck with hand grinders, but if you plan to grind for espresso you're in for a heck of a workout! Not to mention you'd still need to shell out a reasonable amount of cash to get one that has small enough grind steps and high enough grind uniformity.

    Love the video! The noise can definitely be a little much in the morning. However just want to comment that I have Sette 270wi too, I don’t seem to have any of the finicky issues you mentioned. Just put the portafilter on and consistently getting +/- 0.1 to 0.2 gram deviation. No fuss.
    I understand the point of potentially getting inconsistent result from using different portafilters. However, in practice, majority of the people will only have one portafilter rather than multiple ones like reviewers do…..so I don’t know how relevant that concern will or should be.
    Also, Sette 30 has even more plastic bits comparing to the 270 or 270 wi as well, that would be another small difference aside from the micro adjustments.

  • @Displays.1234.

    I have a 270 wi .. but the nosie is terrible,
    On my second gearbox now, the construction of the gearbox is very poor, basically all nylon gears which wear badly.
    The only plus side is the quality of the coffee,
    And the accurate scales.....

      @@LifestyleLab_ It just felt that given my current setup like comparing a Genesis to a Bentley. I have a Breville Infuser/Smart Grinder combo I bought to get my parents off of drip. It worked and they love the quality bump, but ease of use is a huge factor as well. My mum just wants her coffee in the morning and does not want to fuss with settings, weight, or timers. The Smart Grinder is starting to show its age with more retention and clumping. I think the infamous internal plastic paddle wheel to help push grounds down the chute is wearing down.
      I was looking at the 270 as a higher quality and more reliable grinder with the same ease of use. They only use the same Fara coffee beans. I love the Niche, but $900+ is too much when I only paid $450 for the Infuser. I would need that Appartamento first to be able to appreciate it.
      Do you have any other recommendations in the $400 range that the 270?

    If anyone is looking at getting one - these are probably the best grinders for the price initially. But what you won't find in most reviews is the longevity is an issue. The plastic interior parts fail very quickly. Most seemingly need repair within 14 months or so.

    I have the wi.
    I regret buying it.
    The portafilter slips mid grind often.
    The design of the holder means you cant put a funnel on the porta, and it makes a huge overspill mess, meaning I have to sit the whole thing in a tray. So much for the small footprint.
    And I thought I'd get used to the loudness, but no, it is outrageously loud.
