    Dear Nirmalya
This was an entirely impromptu performance. VK had been invited for dinner. Friends of my father like Gyan Babu, Sunil Da, Kumar Mukherjee, Kichlu Brothers, Dipali Nag, Kanans etc were present. One thing led to another and impulsively VK decided to play something. Someone was immediately dispatched to his house to get his sitar. One of the guests who was an amateur Tabla Player rushed to get his Tablas.
He only played Pilu--- I guess he was finally hungry!!
The last bit of Pilu could not be recovered because the spool was damaged.
While this was the only time he played at our house, He visited often and sang old Bandishes. I have one such recital --- quality not good-- which I'll send to Raju soon

No issue, Rafat Sahab. Through Shri Asokan, you have already shared a lot of very good music and I thank you both for your generosity from the bottom of my heart. Only, Ye Dil Mange More!

There is an anecdote attached to this recital, which Raju asked me to relate.
As all who heard VK are aware how vociferously he used to react if he caught anyone recording him. In Bombay he even sued a close acquaintance for taping!!
In fact apart from my father, for whom VK had a high personal regard, he never permitted anyone to tape his recordings. Even in my father's case he told him not to make it known to anyone that he had given him this special dispensation.
This was the only time VK played at our house
Hence a Crystal Vase with artifificial flowers was placed close to him and the microphone was placed inside, suitably camouflaged by the flowers--- an innocuous wire snaking out of the vase did not attract any unwarranted attention. This was one of the few occasions when my father taped!!-- otherwise he left it to me when I was a little older

RAFAT SAID Dear Rafat Sahib, how funny it is that you wrote about this because that is exactly what I was thinking of, when I saw Mr. Asokan's description of the recording, that it must have been rather difficult in a house concert to conceal the fact that the recital was being recorded. And of course, even a lay listener like me is also aware of how averse VK was to being recorded. Of course, it was his discretion as an artiste and one had to respect that but I very much regret that this might be the reason why so many fewer of his concert recordings are available (as compared to, say, Nikhil Banerjee) and of course, even fewer publicly shared. Once again, thanks very much to your generous sharing of these and Mr. Asokan's efforts in bringing them to us. Those of us who are not "insiders" in the highly hierarchical North Indian Classical Music circle in the subcontinent would have had no chance to get to listen to these.

There are no words to describe the feeling this recording evokes in me everytime I listen to it. I just drop my research and get transported into a musical time-space with all the notes of pilu moving around in a beautiful pattern around VKs sitar.

Very nice Raju. Thanks to Rafat sahib and you -- these wonderful pieces need to be heard!
Rafat sahib's anecdotes add to the value of the piece. Looking forward to the other VK piece he said he would be sharing.

Indeed, Rafat sahib is very generous, and I thank him very much. You too deserve a part, though -- since you put in the "time" and "effort" to categorize, upload and label.

Thank you Rafat Said Khan Sahab and Shri Raju Asokan. As mentioned very correctly, UVK Sahab was hyper about his recital being recorded. The anecdote explains the amazing clarity of a 1961 recording. Thank you very much. Shall be extremely grateful if the first part is also shared. I am sure he did not begin and end with Ragmala in Pilu. Regards.
