Vilayat Khan Sahib was fond of changing compositions and even ragas in mid-stream. Here I recognize Gond Malhar as well as Hameer, Shyam Kalyan etc. I wish he had played Gond Malhar more distinctly. Then there is sudden cut-off in the recording and we hear Bhatyali. Even here, he never repeats himself parrot fashion, but introduces nuances one has never heard before in his Bhatyali. There will never be another Vilayat Khan. He was born on the cusp of change occurring from tantkari baaj to gayakian baaj in Sitar, of which he was the main architect.
In 1970 Vilayat Khan played Shyam Kalyan at the Ashoka Hotel with Godai Maharaj. Dispensed with the alap, he began with an ati vilambit gat in teental followed by the drut gat in this recording (a 45 rpm record of the latter gat also exists. He concluded with an alap and sitarkhani gat in Tilak Kamod. The gat he described as Bihari. A neat elegant presentation and my first exposure to Vilayat Khan.
Thank you for sharing these hidden gems- Khansahab at his best! And with the great Pt. Samta Prasad, one of his favorite tabla accompanists, who really shines here.
Very true. Every Sitar player at the present and future will have something from Vilayat Khan Sahib. The Sitar is made today is Called Vilayat Khani Style.
So beautiful
Khansaheb at his passionate best! What tayyari, what melody, like the color of each raga is filling the sky! A true treasure 🙏
So good !
Thank you.
Khansaheb was at his peak in the 60s.
In my opinion, there has not been a Sitarist of his caliber in living memory
Also, look at his laya, I can recognize Ustad Inayat Khan sahib's style dominate as well.
Ustad Sharif Khan Poonchwale was much better than Vilayat Khan. And Shahid Parvez is even a cut above both!

I'm surprised that as a rasik or afficionado, you are indulging in comparisons.

excellent recital
Beautiful Raga Haider Jaan. Zenda bashi.
Thank you for posting!
Listen to Ustad Shahid Parvez, it's extremely clear where he has got his strokes from? Ustad Vilayat Khan's old baaz was heavenly.
Very true. Every Sitar player at the present and future will have something from Vilayat Khan Sahib. The Sitar is made today is Called Vilayat Khani Style.
And Ustad Rais Khan also very much belonged to this baaz.
the tabla was fantastic! Sitar too
Truely this is Kali yuga because such golden classics has lesser views and such channels has so less subscribers.
45:30 hameer
superb tabla from 1:11:17
loved the alap from 38:50 and again from 40:44
and another at 47:23!
May I ask why the first part the end is complete
I mean is not complete
Can anyone tell what he said between 46:16 to 46:23? I couldn't figure it out
Repeating same mechanical pattern for more than 5 min from 4 to 11 is very Boring.
wrong.... Listen M Saree khan poonchwale...he is the best...
