Hollywood responding to the success of Barbie by green lighting Polly Pocket by Lena Dunham movie sounds like a 30 Rock joke
I mean, we got _Milf Manor,_ didn't we?
I am quite interested if Mattel greenlights the Daniel Kaluuya Barney movie or the long rumored Thomas The Train movie.
I noticed that these PBS programs being adapted to film is similar to what I had seen in the Mr. Roger's documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" and the biopic film "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood." It starts off with a documentary on a well known children's show, and later gets the film treatment. Either a biopic or source material itself.
I really loved the Barney documentary "I Love You, You Hate Me" and I would really love to see how the Barney movie will go. I hear that it might be a darker take on the TV character. Not a horror movie or anything, but Barney set in the real world. Maybe like IF or Paddington. Bittersweet and emotional.
And then, there's Thomas The Tank Engine. There's this fan documentary called "An Unlikely Fandom" and I don't know where you can watch it, but just like the Barney documentary, this one also covers the fan reception of the Thomas show but in a more positive light. I don't know if there's still a movie that's coming out. Perhaps that scrapped WW2 script from the early 2010s was our only shot of a new movie since Magic Railroad.

I don't know if "casual moviegoing" will ever come back unless the price of tickets comes down. It's way harder to retrain audiences to try things they're not familiar with, when prices are so high.
Yup, theaters are dying and box office returns are down by double digits. In a decade or two, only a small amount of people will go to theaters likely for more niche auteur movies rather than the current franchise schlock. My opinion is that the industry decline will result in smaller medium budget films going to theaters but they will be higher quality as studios become more selective with stories they greenlight.
Idk. Maybe good riddance to it? I am not really sure. I don't think we're as fucked as it might seem. Maybe blockbusters and theater chains might die and all that will remain will be a couple of local cinemas per city. But that's fine honestly. Movies are a global market now. Movies can take a while to go through the world and make their money slower but more reliably. Allz I am saying is movies won't go away. People like them too much.
I absolutely agree with this! It's so expensive to go to movies that I only end up going maybe twice a year so I'll pick the most sure bets. There are plenty of movies that I think could be good but I'm not going to take a chance when I get to go so infrequently.

I worked at a movie theatre. Most movie theatre revenue comes from concessions. The longer a movie stays in the theatre, they get more of the cut from ticket sales, but basically all the money from tickets goes to the film companies. So they're responsible for the prices, and have clearly decided to over inflate the value of tickets just like the rest of the artificial inflation going on right now. The number of times I've seen people walk away because of prices is unbelievable honestly. The price of everything to do with movie theaters is too high imo. A lot of theatres have become nicer to make the price worth it (getting recliners and all that) but the biggest theatre in my state is basically a glorified sardine can. The price isn't worth it when I know it won't take much longer for something to end up on a streaming service and I can watch at home where it's safer and more comfortable compared to a theatre. Especially for the people closest to me with autoimmune diseases and chronic conditions which make it especially not worth it to go to an uncomfortable, cramped theater where no one masks or anything, even if they're sick! But then it feels like I'm just feeding into the awful vicious cycle of dozens of streaming services and endless subscriptions. It really feels like there's no winning. A lot of movie theaters even have their own subscriptions now, which I honestly do think makes them way more worth it, if you're someone who can travel to a theater really easily and go very often. But it's still a subscription! It never ends!

Okay, let me blow your mind. The idea of a sequel to "big" actually isn't a bad idea. You're just going in the wrong direction.
You call it "little" and have it be about Tom Hank's character, now played by Hanks as an adult (maybe de-aged a hair), wishing to be a kid again after his life has become a disappointment compared to his dreams from the '80s.
A movie about the legacy of the Boomers and how Generation X and the Millennials have become the first generation to be worse off than their parents. About how the opportunities of the '80s dried up in the '90s. How the optimistic 21st century became modern day.

This video reminded me of how Disney made a much better Mario movie than the actual Mario Movie (Wreck-it Ralph), beating the good video game movie trend by a decade...and then the sequel squandered all that franchise potential by being a dated, dull 2018 period piece that spends a huge chunk of its screentime on what feels like a Disney+ ad

THe fact that the movie was "Look, we have star wars and pixar and princesses!" felt very much like a forced IP brag for advertiisng more than an organic love letter like the first film was to video games.
The Mario movie is a terrifying sign of what could be - utterly incomprehensible as a narrative in its own right but no one cares because of the cultural dominance of the IP.
Actually, I'm pretty sure a Big legacy sequel would be Tom Hanks wishing he was a kid again and it would be called Small.

@@timogulThe stupid thing is that there has been a theatrically-released American Girl movie that was critically acclaimed, but it came out soon after the epic failure of Bratz and was denied a wide release as a result. I also looked up and as far as I can tell American Girls has more established lore than Barbie, so if anything maybe better-suited for a film franchise.
Incidentally I just saw Barbie and I thought it was a perfectly enjoyable movie that was no masterpiece. Not any different from most big movies - if anything I kind of liked it more than any of the Avengers movies.
One off topic thing I've noticed, as a non-native English speaker (I'm from Spain) is how incredibly good diction Patrick has. I understand everything he says without subtitles. I love your accent, Pat.
When Patrick was so shocked by the existence of a Bratz live action movie, I was briefly confused that this was such a surprise, because this film has been well known to me as the number one enemy of us Bratz and doll media lovers, like, its sort of a personal nemesis to us. And then I realized that, to paraphrase that one xcd comc: the many, many doll adaptations, movies and media are so second nature to us doll fans, we forget that the average person only knows the Greta Gerwig Barbie movie and maybe a few of the old 3D animated Barbie movies from the 2000's.
One thing I've been thinking with regards to the downturn of superhero films is that in the early days of the MCU each film felt like it was grounded in a different genre beyond just "superhero". They felt more clearly distinct and standalone.
The past few years they've felt more similar to each other and so interconnected that it's much harder to enjoy the films on their own rather than as a franchise. That's also partly why I think the DCEU had a harder time finding success, because they started off interconnected and more similar in tone.
You're right. Captain America was a WW2 movie, iron men was modern war, Thor was basically the lion king... Now they are literally just super hero movies.
@@gisela_oliveira Exactly! Thor 1 was directed by a Shakespearean actor, so it's no wonder it felt super different from later Thor movies. Winter Soldier was a spy thriller. The Guardians of the Galaxy films were space westerns with a really solid core vision and creative team that stuck together for three films to create a coherent sub-series. The others, especially the later ones, didn't have that as much.
Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness had a unique vision and style thanks to Sam Raimi, but sadly it didn't end up resonating with a lot of people.
I wish they had let Sam take the wheel on MoM from the start...
@@DeyaViews Thor I think works his best when he's less superhero and more high fantasy mythology. Even in the comics, when they focus on his alter ego or colorful aliens he isn't received that well, however arcs like The God-Butcher storyline wind up massively successful and barely resemble superheroes, even lacking colorful costumes or codenames. And Thor 1 also just carried idea very well, with a story of redemption and reconciliation.

Movie studios need to wait until someone actually has an idea for a STORY, not just commissioning projects based on the franchises that they own. Nobody cared about Iron Man, but the story of Tony Stark was compelling. You can't just put recognisable images on screen, there has to be a story. A new story, if you can manage it.

I think the difference between video games or toys and comic books are that they're not really a genre. When we say "comic book movie", we're really just talking about superheroes. What do Mario, Five Nights at Freddy's and Uncharted really have in common aside from the medium they happen to be adapted from?
The target audiences are different. Yes, there is obviously going to be overlap between movie-goers and video-gamer players, but there are also people exclusively in those respective circles. Video-game-adaptation movies are a way to get that crowd's money into theaters.
Audience. Freddys, Mario and Uncharted aren't attracting horror, cartoon and adventure movie fans, they're attracting video game fans.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. The reason CBM's blew up is cause they all mostly follow a repetitive formula thats easy to produce and make a lot of money. But games are all very different, theres not one genre taking over gaming like superheroes do.
@@gruwidgeI’m not denying there’s a formula - especially now, dear god - but I got into comic book movies BECAUSE I realised the nigh-endless storytelling potential of the genre so I don’t really like that notion.
Fun fact: the pirate comic books in "Watchmen" were based on a real series. EC Comics (the publishers of "Tales of the Black Freighter") actually *did* publish an anthology series about pirates called "Piracy" in the 1950s, during a brief window of time when superhero comics went out of fashion; "Tales of the Black Freighter" is actually a pretty good approximation of its writing style and general tone. "Watchmen" just shows what it might have looked like if "Piracy" had been popular enough to start a fad.
The funny thing about The Fall Guy's budget is that it was actually under-budget by about $20 Million. My dad helped work on the movie so I was privy to a lot of stuff about the production. So the movie still had an over-inflated budget despite requiring less money to make than estimated by an amount more than most people will ever see in their lifetimes and failed at the box office.
That is fucking depressing.

I remember Lindsay Ellis made a video about the decline of the classical era Hollywood musical with the underperformance (though arguably not failure) of Hello, Dolly in 1969. But to really anticipate the end of superhero movies there would need to be some alternative syphoning its audience and cultural status like New Hollywood to studio films in the 70s or transition to another medium like how TV got more adult and auteur driven in the 2000s when cinema got more orientated to spectacle and driven for mass-appeal. But the hardest part of all this is that a true fall can only be recognized in retrospect, like when we only notice the new normal when its just the present tense, or the way simply things are.

And the advertising side of it. A movie will cost 250 mil to be made, make 500 mil at the box office and still lose 100 mil because they spent so much advertising. Like, is this a money laundering scheme? How are they spending as much as an entire movie budget?
It’s wild, they still get paid like $10 million a movie and this is the era when movie stars don’t exist anymore. Like, if your name doesn’t come before the title do you really deserve eight figures?

It’s gonna be rough for the new people; screenwriting will only pay side hustle money, yet demand 3x your time. AI stories with Unreal Engine environments is what we’ll see as the “new normal” and anything with a soul and the imperfections of real life will seem quaint.
It's actually the opposite for me. It was discouraging seeing all those toy movies and 80s reboots and sequels they have lined up that I have no interest in watching.

A note regarding Hot Wheels movies, which you mentioned around the 21 minute mark: there have been a number of animated films and shows, based on the Hot Wheels franchise. Though small in number, fans of Hot Wheels: AcceleRacers are insanely rabid and have been noted for harassing creators and mattel executives alike in attempts to get more made. The series ended on a cliffhanger when the animation company went out of business. But regardless, there are characters and storylines that exist and can be adapted, as long as they don't go super serious and leave out the essence of the original, like Jem and the Holograms or Max Steel live adaptations did.
“Should I go to the hospital?” is possibly the best line reading Patrick has ever delivered.
How about a mention of a totally original film like Everything Everywhere All At Once?
Pepole dig this film a lot because it was different from every prequel, sequels and Disney live action movies. It wasn’t any of these. Pepole want more original films like these these that feature more characters with hot dogs for fingers.
Made less than all of Disney flops. Was successful of course because of the low budget, but it's not clear that most people want to see them. Ip films still dominate. Also, EEAAO was one of the more successful example in recent years.
EEAAO definitely had an impact on the MCU's decline, not just because it was an original multiversal story, but because it was seen as the _alternative_ to Marvel's entire blockbuster model. Whatever becomes the next big, original thing is also going to have to stand in opposition to whatever's popular.
Agreed, but I would add Villeneuve’s Dune adaptations. People are going crazy over those because they’re original, made with passion and storytelling in mind instead of money, mostly done practically.

@@miz4535 - of course there was still a lot of VFX. I’m not saying there wasn’t. But a TON of stuff they _could_ have done with VFX they did practically, like shooting on location in the actual desert and building actual large-scale sets, backdrops, and machine like the ornithopters.
About the wrestling thing, two points. He's been a villain in wrestling before, but I know you were talking about how he's been portrayed recently. However, he returned intending to be the good guy and was totally rejected by the audience, forcing them to turn heel.

I feel like movies are having a similar moment that the music industry had about a decade ago, as the audience is fracturing a lot more. Today, we don't have the same kinds of "music icons" like we did in prior eras. T Swift, Beyonce... Kanye was kinda there but he's made it super weird now. Big stars still exist, but not in the way that they're just universally known. We certainly aren't getting Michael Jackson level media domination.
And now movies are having similar cases where making a BILLION dollar box office is damn hard to orchestrate. I've argued that in a prior time, Barbie easily would be in the 2 billion club and that it's NOT is a reflection of this new market. And we've been lamenting the death of the mid-range budget movie for over a decade at this point, and it seems that's what could solve a lot of the problems. If you can't make a billion dollars, stop trying to. Figure out how 250 million box office WILL be profitable.
idk, i'd argue Taylor is culturally a bigger deal now than ever. But maybe that's more due to stuff like her connection to the NFL making her relevant to the older demographics, and not "music" per se. You're obviously right if you mean more new artists not rising up to that kind of level.
@@joshthefunkdoc Oh yeah, was mainly saying we're not seeing NEW mega-stars. And Taylor and Beyonce were both grandfathered in, to a degree. They got to a certain level right as the system was dying, but the trajectory was set.
Art is usually a reaction to the world we live in. Romantic Era, Dada, happy musicals, Westerns and Good American Hero stories after WW2, Dramas in the 60s, 70s during times of strife, glitzy films during the heyday of the 80s, 90s, then the world got scary again, and super heros stepped in. Nothing challenging, just feel good stuff. Now, the world is darker again. And dramas that speak to that are becoming more popular (Oppenheimer, Civil War). Or alternatively, we are more isolated than ever, and so movies about family or found family are successful (Spider verse, Guardians 3, Barbie)

Slight correction I wanna give for Dungeons and Dragons. At this point, the DnD universe is vast and rich enough that it is basically the same as adapting a video game with it's lore and everything. Heck moreso, it's closer to like making a star wars spin-off considering all the existing medias on it, video games included (but also novels for instance). So yeah at this point it's not so much a blank slate as "you have this really large world to pick from, make a story in it"
Hollywood has literally shown that they aren't able to do DnD and wishing real hard isn't going to change that.
A movie set in Faerûn like the Chris Pine one or a movie in the Dark Sun or Eberron settings would be.
...I want a (WELL MADE) movie set in the Ravenloft universe so bad. It would make me so happy if the next great vampire movie was Strahd focused.
I was gonna say, there was a lot about the D&D movie I liked, but as a former D&D player, I *definitely* felt the "HEY GUYS REMEMBER THIS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY REFERENCE?!" moments in it.

I think you're underestimating Monopoly. In the right hands it could play as a satire and commentary on Capitalism the same way that Barbie did for gender roles.

Another interesting think that I’m personally excited for is seeing movies from people who genuinely care about what they make. I’ve had a lot of talks with people before about how currently movies are being made for the sake of being made, not to tell a story like how they used to. For example, I am ecstatic to go see Iron Lung when it comes out. Partly because of Marks success as a RUclipsr but I also know that he genuinely cares about what he creates and puts in so much effort. I’m hoping to see more movies from directors who are genuinely passionate about what they do and the story they’re going to tell, even it’s a famous director we already know about or if it’s the first time someone has made a movie. I just want to see stories being told by people who are passionate about what they are doing and want to tell a story, not make a movie just to make a movie.
They don't call it the movie business for nothing, yes they care but their caring isn't going to put food on their table especially in this economy

Gran Turismo isn't a video game adaptation, though, it's a biopic about real people and real world events, that happened to have a video game as a central aspect. And the only Hot Wheels movie I'd watch is a documentary about the people who collect them, preferably narrated by James May.

Wish they'd adapt more sci-fi novels from the 70s like Dune. There's a lot of interesting stories that deserve modern adaptations like those from Philip K. Dick, Ursula LeGuin, Octavia Butler, etc.

Yeah they are screwing things up... they made the peripheral and then canceled it. You are also mentioning authors that are lesser known seemingly because they are women which is most of the problem with hollywood right now. There are way more popular books but okay.

The cost of "going to the movies" has become much more prohibitive - especially as a family event type thing. The conclusion about 'teaching people to take a chance on movies and go to the theatres' seems to not take into account that going to the theatres has a much bigger cost than it used to be, especially when you consider food and the whole experience. I think people just HAVE to be more selective since it is harder to afford to go casually and 'risking' money on a bad movie in this economic climate. It seems like moving from determining movie success based on box office numbers is a very limited measuring tool for what the actual impact of a movie is. Its even kind of stated here when mentioning 'these movies made money but does anyone even care' ... the last decade has just lead to the entertainment industry becoming more and more complex and diverse beyond what will make the most money in theatres.
It's not just super hero movies that are suffering at the box office. We've seen movies like Fall Guy and Furiosa showing very poor results as well. As much as I love going to the theater (sometimes three times a week for weeks at a time), there's just not as big of an interest as there was pre 2020. It's really a roll of the dice on whether a movie is going to be successful or not, no matter how good it is or how big the budget is.
My one recommendation would be to reign in the budgets.
Emma is so great. The bit with the Windex was hilarious, it makes me want to see her character slowly going crazy as she tricks Patrick into ever more dangerous bits.

I'm surprised that Patrick didn't talk about Sci-Fi Adventure franchises being the next big thing. Both Dune & Avatar movies have been massive successes, and the new Planet of the Apes movie did fairly well. If we get more of these type of films (like Villeneuve's planned Rendezvous with Rama adaptation), alongside the planned sequels (Dune Messiah, Avatar 3-5 etc.), we could very well see more Sci-Fi Adventure films!

I think this is really where a new Chronicles of Riddick film would sit. They were clearly setting up more lore and stuff in the last movie.
its possible but in the past the major hollywood studios have predicted that as being the next big thing but never were able to replicate the success of the few sci fi adventure films that did really well. In the 80s they tried to replicate Star Wars with films like the black hole and David lynch's dune and they flopped hard. In the 2010s studios tried to replicate the success of avatar with films like John Carter and Jupiter ascending and those films also did really poorly. We've already started seeing this now with the failure of Rebel Moon.
Dude, I loved Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I think it was made a lot more interesting by the fact that it was not just good vs evil. By the end I even got around to thinking that maybe Proximus Cesar perhaps was a lighter gray than May was.

Childcare Student here and yeah! During my time at childcare centres every child their LOVED Mario and Sonic. As an adult we look at these films and think theres nothing to them or nothing intresting, but children are amazed and enthusiastic about them. The amount of times I've been asked to draw Sonic by 4 year olds haha.

Not necesarily live action adaptation, but actual japanese anime movies dominating the global box office in the next 5 to 10 years. Suzume, Demon Slayer and Boy and The Heron proves the potential for this.
Plus theres a Lord Of The Rings anime movie directed by the same guy who did the Ghost Of The Shell movies coning this december.

I love anime movies, I saw One Piece Red in theaters, but outside Japan they barely tread water. They are cheaper, so they are profitable, but not exactly something for Hollywood to sink their teeth into.

Should be noted, that while most adults think the mario movie is okay, I work in Childcare and let me tell you, KIDS LOVE THR MARIO MOVIE. Sonic and Mario are MASIVE with kids and thats why those movies do so well. Parents want to bring their kids to something they know they'll enjoy and also something that they as parents recognise.

Personally I’d like to see animation make a big return. In the last few years Disney screwed up, largely making one too many animated sequels, live action remakes of animated classics and giving some of their animated flicks the straight to streaming treatment.
Last year however we saw some relatively successful flicks. Mario, Spider-Verse, Elementals(it took some time), Wish, etc. We have ever seen some anime do well. The Boy and The Heron was at least number 2 one weekend in the US last year. We have seen Dragon Ball and Demon Slayer do well. On the tv front, we have had American produced shows like Blue Eye Samurai, X-Men 97, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Invincible, etc be successful. Personally I’d love to see more animated superhero flicks as there are less limitations and let’s be honest most of these live action superhero flicks are looking pretty animated.
Wish bombed, actually. It was a big loss for Disney. Unfortunately audiences realized that paying $10 a month to let your kids watch as many Disney movies as they want is a better deal than $10 a ticket for one movie when they can’t sit still in the theater for 2 hours. Disney animation needs a hit, because, as of now, they absolutely have not recovered from Covid.
If you want get into creator driven animated stories, RUclips is the place to go: there's currently an indie animation boom going on on the platform.
Even one of these shows got picked up by Amazon and got released this year on Prime.

@@wesreleases6346 It did indeed. Their idea for big hits seem to be making sequels of previous hits which isn't great. Not sure if you saw the Bloomberg article released recently where execs concluded that Pixar's focus would be less on autobiographical stories but more stories with mass market appeal. Either way it's not looking good for the future of Disney when it comes to original animated movies. Actually, you could say in general too because Marvel and Star Wars aren't doing that great either.

I could be completely wrong about this, but I think it's going to be anime/manga. Battle Angel Alita and Netflix One Piece have disproven the idea that anime is inherently unadaptable. They just need to find directors like James Cameron who are genuinely passionate about the source material, and figure out what will look good in live action. Personally, Ive always wanted to see Guillermo del Toro's take on Hellsing.
the marvel path to end game was legendary because it attracted both super hero/comic book fans, as well as people who dont care about them. everybody somewhat followed the story avengers story to its natural completion with end game. now that that storyline is done, the aftermath has revealed that majority of people never actually cared about these movies outside of that particular story line, and the only people still going are mostly just comic book/super hero fans
I'm just sticking around until Young Avengers and/or Savage Lands and then I'll be happy. Honestly I think Marvel can work more with animation.

Yeah but the thing is, despite some mixed results, there were more good Phase 4/5 movies and shows than bad ones. The problem was that there were too MANY films/shows released back to back. So people became more aware that certain stories weren't as strong or were broader in their scope. Despite, if we're being honest, Phase 1/2 having only one or two masterpiece films themselves.
But hey, Phase 4 gave us Iman Vellani and she's easily the best book-to-screen casting I've seen since Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa.

Something I liked that Challengers did was that instead of doing the obvious amd casting two very popular heartthrobs as male leads in a sexy love triangle with Zendaya, they instead opted for 2 lesser known but genuinely talented actors and gave them a chance to rise. Josh O'connor honestly is one of the best actors right now, he completely transforms into his characters and I'm estatic to see him in alot of upcoming projects. Mike Faist too is just as brilliant on broadway as he is in front of the camera and its a shame he dosent seem entirely enthusiastic in pursuing acting because he has great potential and no doubt is in high demand. So yeah I'm enjoying see new faces.

I have an idea. Find a bunch of scripts that are original and interesting. Make those scripts into mid-budget movies with Directors that have a vision and will put in the work. Make the movies 90 minutes unless the story is more dramatic then you can push to no more than 120 minutes. Use up and coming actors that fit the parts and may become the movie stars of the future. Once you find a hit maybe make a sequel but don't plan for it. Tell a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end! Release those movies throughout the year and get people back to spending time at the theater weekly if possible (this will be the hardest part). Don't allow streaming until months after the theatrical release so people just don't wait until it shows up on streaming.

1. Both those things are in achingly short supply, no matter how much cineastes want to convince themselves they're not. There's a reason The Black List became such a thing - actually great, original, interesting scripts are like manna from Heaven. They might not actually exist.
2. There's literally no way to confirm a director has a vision and will put in the work until they've made AT LEAST one feature film. Anything else is just an educated guess, at best.
Also, this: "may become the movie stars of the future" is just anybody's guess, and has just as much to do with the actor's taste, collaborations, and timing as any inherent talent they have. 90% of the people who end up onscreen have the POTENTIAL to be movie stars. It's not like studios go out of their way to ignore people with good looks, talent and charisma.

Feels a little like playing chicken with the audience (i.e. "You gonna go back to how things were, or are you just gonna deprioritize movies even more?") which could backfire if the theater experience continues to decline.
I predict more movies like The Fall Guy - an IP adaptation that is so "deep cut" that audiences don't realize it's IP, they think it's original material. And studios don't really try to correct them
I predict that companies like Disney, are going to start loosening their grip on IP & will start licensing it out. I think we’re going to start seeing films made with Disney/Marvel IP, by companies that aren’t Disney/Marvel.

I read an article a little while ago which mentioned in a throwaway line that the reason why the star system died in the 80s and 90s was because they stopped being reliable brands in the way that they were in the 50s and 60s. They said that Bogart and John Wayne basically made the same movie every time, and so functioned in the same way as a franchise. When people like De Niro and Will Smith started doing more adventurous stuff as movie stars they broke that predictability for audiences, and therefore removed the trust and bankability of stars. Does this hold up, or was it just a cute contrarian line that I'm not knowledgeable enough to realise isnt true?

I know video game adaptations have had a good run these past few years. But between Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane, I sense they'll always do better as TV adaptations than film. Especially since Super Mario Bros. Movie's box office numbers didn't usually match its very simple (if not game-accurate) plot.
Yeah, making them shows instead of movied gives them more room to breathe and more naturally ease you into the world compared to a movie where there's only so much time, so a lot of the world building becomes relegated to exposition dumps and stuff just for the fans.
Oh yeah, since we spend (At minimum) 8 hours in a video game world compared to the 90-180 minutes of a normal film something essential is gonna get cut

Yeah like for as cool as a Metal Gear movie would be, unless it’s gonna be directed by PTA (a real thing that he considered doing in 2006, this is actually not a joke), I’d much rather see the TV version of it, especially in since certain games (2 and 4 mainly) you move like one corner and you’re thrust basically into a full episode of an HBO series just like that.

You touched upon it but I believe we are in that mid 70s era of filmmaking. Sure, there were some musical holdovers from the 60s like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but it wasn't necessarily a "musical". I think we're in a bit of a hybrid period of wanting escapist entrainment but more geared toward emotional/character based films.
I think people ultimately want connections to what's being seen on screen versus just consuming content.

So I'm half joking half serious with this, but I don't think I'd consider historical dramas originals. They're like the franchise movies of real life. Think about it: A story that's already known, so it requires less creative effort to create a script than a fully original idea. People will recognize the name and that inclines them to see it or at least check it out even if they know nothing about the figure/event, thus reducing the risk of it failing. For the people who do already know a lot about the subject, they'll go expecting to see specific things they already know. Perhaps the most significant difference from a business model perspective is that you usually can't simply make "Historical Figure's 2" and can't own the IP outside of the specifics of the movie. But there are a lot of subjects that could easily be adapted and sometimes you can even get away with making another one about the same person after some time has passed.
Not to say they can't also be good movies, but I think there's a reason why they're more likely to get studio funding than some aspiring filmmaker's or scriptwriter's artistic baby.

I wouldn’t lump Gran Turismo in with the other video game movies. It was closer to a fictional biopic like The Founder, than it was a video game movie like Borderlands. It wasn’t a film based on the video game; it was about a guy who learned how to race real cars, by playing the game.
A theme I noticed in upcoming movies and tv shows is Ancient Rome, there are multiple projects that either are set in Ancient Rome or have Ancient Rome themes or aesthetics. Some of these are Megalopolis, Gladiator 2 and the tv show Those About to Die.
Maybe all those TikTok jokes about how much people think about the Roman Empire, actually got people thinking about the Roman Empire 😆.

It'd make me SHOCKED if Disney doesn't capitalize on Kingdom Hearts because it's a VIDEO GAME IP that has SURPLUS AMOUNT of storytelling material that would attract both kids and adults interested in seeing anime characters cry with disney characters in the background. The entire series is already a cinematic universe in waiting. Also marketing.
I'm guessing Square Enix is the big hurdle for it. Seeing how SE dropped the ball with a Final Fantasy movie, I personally doubt they learned their lesson over the cacophony of all the money they've been printing with the FF VII remakes.

The problem with superhero movies is they stopped hiring comic fans to make them. Marvel hired a lot of really interesting, talented, young directors to make movies starting in phase 3 and expanding into phase 4, but most of these filmmakers hadn't grown up loving comics the way Favreau, Gunn and the Russos did. Non-comic fans don't make superhero movies out of love, and we can tell.

On the actor side, that's why people say that Iman Vellani was the best part of The Marvels. She's passionate about comics and it shows.
Its why Xmen 97 was a success, it was made by genuine fans of the comics and the original 90s animated show.

The Energon Universe is a treat to read every Wednesday, no matter the book. It's been a great ride so far.
With that said, these Hollywood producers behind Transformers & G.I. Joe have had a (mostly) terrible vision for their movies with the exception of Bumblebee and (in part) Rise of the Beasts. If they utilize any guidance from Skybound and manage to pull off that TF x G.I. Joe crossover, it'll be a miracle.
The closest thing to a big budget Treasure Island adaptation we've had in recent years was the tv show Black Sails which acted as a prequel that also incorporated real historical pirates. The show is an all time great so eventually doing Treasure Island with some of the same actors playing roles like John Silver would actually be really cool.
Book to film adaptations should also be in the list. Some of the best and successful movies came from books.
I don't believe there's any sort of "superhero fatigue." I agree with James Gunn that the *topic* of the movies doesn't matter at all - what matters is whether the movies are any *good*. Endgame was like the 21st Marvel movie and yet it grossed more than any of them, and that's not just because it was a culmination of this overarching story, but also because it was simply a GOOD movie. If the movies of the past few years had been good, more people would've gone to see them, and we'd still be speculating about when exactly "superhero fatigue" would start to set in. The topic of these movies is irrelevant. If the movies are just "meh" at best, they're not gonna do great at the box office, end of story.
Infinity War can be genuinely called "simply a good movie", but how can Endgame?
I also believe that the general audience have come to understand what superhero movies are all about, so if they try to make the same movie as they used to, like Thor 1 or so, it just won't work.
One thing I love about James Gunns superhero movies is that they bend the genre. Like The Suicide Squad is basically a heist movie with superheroes in them.
Possibly. I do also think some audiences will become genuinely sick of characters like Thor being everywhere. I keep hearing people complain about all the Batman movies for example. The problem is big, expensive superhero movies don’t really allow themselves to tackle anything new or interesting and really what people tire of are the cliches and every movie kind of feeling the same to non-fans. This is partly why the comparisons to the western don’t really work, because when would a superhero movie end with just three characters standing around in a triangle before one shoots another?
I mean, Godzilla x Kong and Mario and FNaF weren’t high art or anything, and they still made lots of money. I’d argue at least 2 comic-book movies from the last year that bombed (maybe Blue Beetle or the Marvels) weren’t as bad, and it didn’t matter because so many failures before them occurred and brought the genre down.

However, I think anime and video game adaptations seem like the next big things after superhero movies, as evidenced by shows like One Piece, Arcane, The Last Of Us and Fallout, as well as with the upcoming Naruto film and the Death Note Netflix series by Daniel Destin Cretin and The Duffer Bros respectively.
I had a ton of Major Matt Mason toys growing up in the 60s. You had to be of the generation that grew up watching the Gemini and Apollo programs to really appreciate it. Bendy foam-rubber, wire-armature action figures in space suits, with removable helmets, but with a load of cool accessories like a Moon Base/Space Station, the Space Crawler, the Satellite Launcher, and the awesome Space Cannon. If they make a movie from that IP I'm going to seriously regret binning my collection of toys a few years ago.

The interesting thing is some of these replacements (video games, toys, legacy sequels, more superhero films, etc.) is that they all flow from the same font; IP ownership. The costs associated with buying these intellectual properties, the need to make lots of money to cover those & other costs, and both of these meaning that is mostly restricted to large studios means that the problems already present in the current studio system w/ superhero films would continue. I guess I have a few ideas I might pose for a future where the current monopolistic studio system sustained by massive blockbusters & streaming declines might be:
1) Public Domain Jukebox. Essentially, works in the public domain or older & more obscure works that would cost less to buy the rights to might be a good way for smaller films that can get a cut of the pie. While this might lead to more expensive period pieces, the public domain works could be modified to fit contemporary settings. (Indeed, the latter is something I see as more likely, especially as a way to reflect social issues in smaller, moodier films that might crop up after the large, bombastic, apolitical superhero films.)
2.) Foreign films. Over the past few years, films from outside the U.S. have become more popular in the United States. This trend might grow in the future and create a more even playing field internationally. Curiously, I think genres & strategies for making films (Ex: effects from Godzilla -1, or styles and/or intermissions in Bollywood films) might be adopted by American filmmakers.
3.) Gonzo Blockbusters. I wanted to go back & reference an older Patrick (H) Willems video ("The Modern Class of Gonzo Blockbusters," September 1st, 2020) because that is what came to my mind first. Superhero films -- with their reliance on lore, genre, and spectacle of action & visual effects -- have paved the way for a public that might be able to accept soldier, crazier blockbusters. This is something I think could truly fill the similar role the currently/once-dominant superhero films do.
Of course, all of this is dependent on whether there are actions -- policy or otherwise -- that help break up the small number of monopolistic, vertically-integrated studios currently dominating the space.
It's all good to speculate about that, but who will take the lead with any of those ideas? Regardless of how "indie" this approach might seem on the surface, you'll still need lots of capital to get these ideas off the ground.
Currently, these studio monopolies are the people with said capital needed to fund a new wave of movie-making. It would be best if you devised a way to fund these ideas. You can't simply count on laws, policies, etc., breaking up monopolies to make it possible.

The only toy movie I’m looking forward to is He-Man. The mix of fantasy and sci fi where barbarians are riding around on hover tanks while evil wizards use armies of robots is just awesome. Plus I think kids can actually connect with it like in the 80s. Being a kid and seeing someone transform into an all powerful force for good was awesome, look at Shazam who started it then has been evolved over time like yu gi oh and Ben 10.
Aside from that the toy movies are either gonna have to be weird or art films to gain any attraction.

The last few times I went into an AMC theater, they ran a detailed instructional pre-trailer telling moviegoers to silence their phones and refrain from talking during the movie. I didn't hear a peep from anyone during the feature films.

My main problem with going to the cinema is wrangling all your friends together. It's stressful especially if you're the organizer. Someone's not available this weekend so you reschedule on the next weekend, but come next weekend someone asks to reschedule again. You also need to pick a place that's near everyone. It's probably easier to organize when you're younger, but we're all in our 30s, too much stuff going on.

@@echoecho57 Same. Unless it's an event film (saw The Crow 30th Anniversary with friends, and an early screening of Furiosa for a Live Podcast in the last 2 weeks), I'd rather experience it solo in a less crowded setting.
I unironically love BATTLESHIP, and it gets at least one yearly rewatch, it's such a fun movie, and watching the old guys take the USS Missouri out of mothballs to kick some alien butt will never get old. It's a great movie.

One interesting recent legacy sequel was the 2022 Predater-adjacent film "Prey" - if we're going to get story after story using existing IP, i'd love to see more stories like this that center marginalized voices and provide a new angle on the concept
Video game adaptations. We have had edge runners, last of us, recently recently fallout, and lionsgate is now producing a borderlands movie.
What about space pirates? Captain Harlock is a real stoic son of a bitch, that's kinda big right now.
A Treasure Planet live action could actually be part of that

In crafting box office hits, the importance of directors and writers outweighs that of movie stars.
Have to be careful with that strategy. Michael Cera was the funny kid everyone liked on Arrested Development. He was going to be in Scott Pilgrim, a highly anticipated film--and then studios dumped a bunch of mid-tier teen romcoms starring him that had been shelved for years all in the same year. By the time of SP's release, a lot of people were sick of Michael Cera. I'm not saying that's the reason SP bombed, but it sure didn't help.
@@cory2477People don't know screenwriters. You can make a good movie but if the audience doesn't recognize anyone in the poster they are not going to watch it.
I think we are post hollywood star. Now they are the guy who played spiderman or iron man. Nobody really cares about hollywood stars anymore because they have parasocial relationships with social media stars. Hollywood stars aren't going to put themselves out there to interact with the normies like the social media stars do. The only way to fix this is to start trying to get social media stars to be movie stars but there are issues with that.
The old movie star era wouldn't ever return the traditional way. It's not feasible.
My question would be: is cinema still mainstream? What I see is that every now and then there will be movies that people will go to see, but most other movies will be seen on streaming (mostly). As young audiences grow older I can see a new potential phenomenon: Live action manga/anime adaptations, we already had some like edge of tomorrow, ghost in the shell and alita, but I think that one was a sleeper hit and the other two were bad adaptations, manga and anime can get away with spectacular action while being "ok" on the drama, movies have to be the other way around.
I hope it will be. I honestly can't watch movies unless it's in a cinema. It's so powerful and beautiful that it would be a shame.
With Patrick mentioning that people will be watching Fall Guy in months and wishing they'd seen it in theaters, and how Spider-Man was doing well as a re-release, I almost feel like some movies should go straight to streaming and THEN get a theatrical release.
Edge of tomorrow wasn't anime. You aren't seeing anything all you are doing is doubling down on biases you already hold. Anime isn't as popular as it would need to be for that to happen. You would need gen alpha and the following generation to keep on the anime bandwagon for it to be wide spread enough for that to happen.

@@thomgizziz Edge of Tomorrow was an adaptation of a manga and light novel, which I think was his point (the manga was much better, btw). Also, One Piece was the most watched Netflix show for the back half of 2023, so apparently there is an audience.
Honestly after seeing the Bikeriders I really feel like the era of the movie Star driven films is starting to come back. Looking around seeing that the theater was almost full made me feel hopeful about the future of cinema.

This is going to sound way off base, but I have an idea for the next big thing. Everything Everywhere All At Once and Barbie where both critical and commercial successes, and one common thread I found is that they both take subject matter that is typically reserved for Oscar Bait movies (family trauma, Nillism, sexism, ect), but make it feel fresh through strong visuals and a sort of Looney Tunes level of self aware humor. To me they almost feel like what would happen if you took something like Green Book or Crash and transformed it into a Gonzo Blockbuster with great characters.
There is an underappreciated ability to be able to gracefully balance the ability to entertain and touch, without being heavyhanded or preachy.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was snob bait... people that feel that they are trendy and smarter than other people were told that they would be seen as cool and smart if they went along with the BS as said they loved the movie so very very much. You got played while thinking you were the intelligent one.
I would like the future of movies to be more nautical adventure movies in general as opposed to just pirate movies. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World deserved better!
I think (in the being of training people to go back to theatres) it’s more of a thing that either the price of tickets need to go down (unlikely), or we need to start seeing that quality movies are coming out and they’re truly better to see on the big screen again. I recently went to the movies purely because I had a gift card, and I love seeing the movie, but also I just felt like the movie itself was made for home viewing and that there was no real point seeing it in a bigger screen. That’s probably just me though haha
I think video-game-adaptations are actually a way more lucrative source of IPs that studios can pull from, but I just think they need to be way more careful and respectful of the source material.
The Iron Lung adaptation of the indie horror game from Markiplier seems promising, and I think it could be amazing it a movie like that breaks the dam for these kind of movies
Edit: I don't think it will solely be video-game-movies, purely because I personally think that video games have exponentially more untapped potential to be superior forms of entertainment and art than movies due to their interactive nature----But I actually thoroughly enjoy your conclusion about the future of Hollywood being a return to original inspired movies dominating pop culture because of my passion for filmmaking
