Thank you for this. I’ve had this tool laying around for years, found it at Goodwill with a set of leather working tools and couldn’t figure out how to start the cut. Just used it today and it worked like a charm to cut down a strap for my soon to be hat band!
You know the old saying, “simple is better”! I bought the the cutter from Tandy when I started leather work a few months ago. I had no idea what I was doing but it seemed like a good hobby. I got this cutter and I was surprised that there were no instructions. It’s like, here go cut. I had no idea what the screw at the end of the split rail was for I figured out the the screw down thumb screw was to tighten the split rail from moving. Until right now I had no idea what that end screw did. Thank you for clearing that up for me. Simple for some, is not simple for others.
So I'm just getting into this craft (I inherited all my dads tools and have no idea what any of them are) but I clicked on the video because he has a tool that looks exactly like the one you were holding in the thumb nail. I now realize that the strip of leather I worked at hand cutting for like 20 min for my dogs collar (my first project) could have been done in like 2 min with significantly less stress/time... the more you know
Thanks for making such good videos on the basics. So many videos out there are way too complicated for someone who just needs a basic question answered.
I made the mistake of buying a cheaper model strap cutter and after it arrived a had a hell of a time getting it set up. The screw on the back was turning the round plat that locks the shaft in place and I couldn't get it level. I also tried to set up the width of cut but noticed the ruler on the shaft seemed a little odd. I measured the distance between each inch and it was over an eighth of an inch too long. I sent it back to Amazon and ordered the one you reccomended from Tandy .
Thank you just the information I needed and let me tell you why I looked for this video and why I chose yours is I watch many of your videos and you are a good teacher. I mostly needed how to put my strap cutter back together as well.
Thanks, man. I bought this thing online with no instructions, and though I'm a handy fellow, will admit I couldn't for the life of me figure the mf'er out. Now, I'm all set 🤘 hope you've weathered the last few years and come out on top
Whit Here, I typically put the strap cutter on the leather, make a little mark with the blade and then cut a small line down with a knife so I can more easily pull the leather out of the top of the strap cutter. Hopefully that makes a little sense!
Wouldn't mind a video tutorial on edgeing..burnishing and finnishing with edge dyes or whatnot...i never get nice edges. Ps.great vids n humorous too 👍
I doubt you check the comments but just wanted to say thank you I was using this tool completely wrong and for the life of me couldn’t work out why my straps weren’t straight Now I know cheers bro
I followed your advice and it works easily. My first cut was not perfect because I didn't have a super long ruler, had to slice the reference line in two cuts.
Love the "simple" videos I'm trying to learn and they are very helpful! Does your buffalo stamp just press in or do you heat it up and brand the leather?
Can you do a video on where to buy leather from. My issue is that I am new and I have gotten most leather from Tandy, but I need to learn how to find different leather suppliers. I notice some makers find interesting hides that seem unique and I would like to know how to find suppliers. If you could walk through the process of buying online as well. Some sites I have been to seem to sell really small pieces of leather, not like the double shoulders and really long hides I buy from tandy.
Does this tool work with soft leather? I think you use a hard piece of leather (thicker) and it is keeping against the cutter. What if I want to cut a soft piece of leather? THX
what leather hide is that? great video, and your latest updates on sales and your general store are great. i think you deserve more subscribers for the amount of information you give to people in the leathercraft community.
I just ordered one yesterday and I am excited about all the tools that I just ordered as a beginner! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Oh, did you know that your audio was low at first, then cranked at 4:17? 😬
so if I have some 1" leather straps and I need 1/2" can I just cut those in half with one of these cutters? I don't want to have to buy a whole bunch of 1/2" leather when I don't have to

Thank you.....not "Too Simple" for a novice using this cutter for the first time! You took the mystery out of it for me.........

Now I know cheers bro
So what’s the best way to get that perfectly straight edge before using the strap cutter?
I love RUclips. Standing in Tandy wondering is it’s trash. Decided to snag it.
Thanks for the vid!
Thanks you for that video, now I know how to do it! Love to see you making bags and totes in the future
Thank you, the instruction pictures don't really cut it. This was very helpful!
I'd like to know a bit more about different threads used on sewing machine as apposed to hand stitching threads
Would that cut softer leather? What is the thinnest leather you think it would cut successfully? Thank you.

Is this a left or right-hand tool?
Thank you for the demo… Cheers
would it be possible to take a 2 inch strap and trim off, say, 1/4"? or would the leather just buckle as you pulled.
Where can I buy the knifes

Would like to see you change out the blade.
Could this cut just 1/8inch off of something?

where do you get the large cutting pad? I can't find anything larger than 48'.
Thank you for this explanation!
Good video, very helpful and straight forward. I will be getting one of these!
Weaver Leather Supply is 40% cheaper with their wooden strap cutter. l have one and it works very well.
Excellent! got it right the first time :)
Can you cut curved straps this way?
I would like to see a video about the servo motor on your Cowboy 3200 and how you use it.
Good to know that the inexpensive models do work well I need one 2 1/2" - 3" is a good width for razor strop's I prefer the 3" myself.
Good video, might want to double check those sound levels though. Keep up the good work.
