Dr Peterson, I grew up on a farm in Northern Alberta. Eating meat at every meal, was always thin and healthy. Did the same throughout my career in the Canadian armed forces.
As soon as I adopted the Canadian food guide, I started putting on weight and my health had taken a massive change for the worst. In five months I lost 50 pounds of fat, by eating the way I grew up with my grandparents. My bad cholesterol levels have dropped below normal, my liver enzyme count is now back to normal. My blood pressure is now back to normal.
Thank you for sharing your journey, I have bought and sent everyone I know a copy of your latest book, in hopes it improves their lives as much as it did mine.

Not too long ago Joe Rogan had a guy on his show who had gained _massive_ amounts of weight by switching to vegan diet. He thought he was going to get healthy. Another relatively recent scam is the gluten-free diet (gluten is in fact a necessary part of healthy metabolism).

My experience has been that when I eat a lot of protein and fat rich food in the morning, such as eggs, sausages, or fish, then I am not hungry until the evening. Moreover, I don't even THINK about eating in the meantime. But when I mostly eat carbs, I still have a strong craving for cookies or candy after a large meal and I feel like I have to keep eating until I cannot anymore. Protein and fat is the way to go!

If we feel "low" in our house (change of season, long work hours, etc.) we eat hamburgers (no bun) with mushrooms and au jus gravy with a small potato for 3 nights in a row. It works like a charm. Vegetables optional for colour. Beef is especially energizing and anti-depressant. The potato's resistant starch feeds your microbiome .. also anti-depressant. This is ranched ground meat .. no support of confinement feeding operations here. It really isn't that difficult or expensive to feel great.

First of all, let me mention that I love most of Dr Peterson's work. Adopt responsibility, tell the truth and stop making everything worse. He really deserves respect. In the past I heard a smart man say, that society takes one smart person's word outside of his area of experties. So this is the case as well. We just think he knows best in every area. I like that he mentions that the goverment should not dictate the food guidelines, however it's a suggestion and also with a lot of science behind it, now I know there are two sides to every coin, but he did not mention any studies, and just states stuff as pure facts. I would really love to see him talk to a meat doctors and vegan docotr, going through the research and see if he changes his mind, since there is a loooot of information. I think he is just tired of the authoritarian ideas behind every goverment, which is good, but most of the time goverments do provide good guidelines, for example - exercise regularly, eat fruits, avoid bad habbits like alcohol etc. Also one clear distinction - there are carbs and carbs... just like there are fats and fats... so we can't just say cars are bad, since like anything there is a lot of details in there - processed carbs (such as sugar) are bad, however it's hard to find a study that suggests the same for oats for example.

I'm with you on all this. I just want to add a caveat that JBP literally thrives best with nothing but ruminant meat and salt. Even cutting broccoli (the last plant he was eating) out of his diet seemed to make a difference for him. That's a pattern among many carnivores who used to eat "healthy" and then cut the vegatables out and it made them feel mind-blowingly phenomenal!
So he comes from a perspective of realizing that he (and many others) attained the best health of their lives by cutting out carbs completely

@@emilycavendish6690 think on this; people talking about climate change always say the science is settled, in that is is known to be occurring due to human actions, yet not one person on that side of the argument can ever give a real answer on how much humans are impacting the climate. And in the rare instance they do, they disagree with one another about with how much we are impacting the climate. So, the supposed settled scientists do not even agree with one another, yet we are to believe it is settled. Also, as long as 80 percent of the world does not sleep on a mattress and will burn plastic or rubber in order to make heat, then it doesnt matter anyway, as first world countries can do very little to counter the impact of those who are simply needing to do what they can to get by. I dont blame them. What is interesting is that I dont see people who claim we need to not eat meat ferting rid of their own IRA accounts to pay for this. If they really believe we are killing the planet they are not living like it. They usually like to tell others how to live, as long as they can still keep all of the money they have and have an iphone.

I didnt have many health if any health issues previously though gained a lot more strength and energy. My partner on the otherhand was full of health issues until going vegan. I understand JP's stance since he pretty much had to be on a meat only diet during his health crisis. And have seen/ heard many people who have gone on more meat based diets as that was the only thing that was helping, along with previous long-term vegans. Though taking a stab at plant-based is in my opinion the wrong way to aim or not as accurate. Should be more directing our energy to actual healthy eating strategies for the individual and get rid of the crap that is being marketed to the masses, which is sustaining this health crisis.

I eat plant based and haven't had issues. My cholesterol, triglycerides and inflammation markers are low and iron deficiency is no longer. My athletic performance, strength and lean muscle mass is also at an advanced level for not dedicating my life to it. That being said I still don't agree with the food pyramid recommendations. 6 servings of grains a day seems off to me or at least it's what I don't feel good eating and would gain weight if I did so. I'm currently preparing for my first bodybuilding show and currently am eating daily 160g of protein, 160g of carbs, 57g of fat, in under 2000 calories. My fruit is either a banana or a cup of blueberries, my vegetables are typically sweet potato, leafy greens, micro greens and broccoli, I eat 1 serve of grains most days which are oats and the rest of my meals are protein sources. What places with the least diet related issues and greatest life expectancy even till this day have in common eating whole foods. Some rarely eat meat at all like the traditional Okinawans yet they've been renowned to have lived much longer than the average. Don't get caught up in blaming carbs and plants and this and that just because it doesn't work for you. If you're absorbing nutrients, if you're food is good quality and whole food, if you're gut is happy, if you're body fat and fitness is at good level for hormone production then you're diet is a healthy and supportive one. It feels weird being a living example of great health while eating plants and coming across some people being unable to accept that because of their own issues... Like they clearly get angry about it for some reason and then come up with wacky excuses such as i'm still living off nutrients from over 5 years ago or I just happen to be the exception along with my husband and in-laws who decided to not eat meat ethically for our situation and actually eat properly and understand what we need rather than juice fasts and the other fads.

Really?! I loved J.P. I think I still do. But this needs to stop Sir! Jordan Peterson used to acknowledge he's no diet expert and specifically asked people not to take his diet just based on his word. Now that's changed.
Also, am I the only guy missing this? Jordan Peterson, his daughter and his wife. All of whom I assume are good people who want to do good for the society. But all of them went off the radar for months, in several cases had to be rushed to the ER for allergic reactions due to a fucking apple cider vinegar! I wasn't really surprised at this because his microbiome is practically non existent after only living on beef and salt for decades.
I'm a vegetarian and have battled with depression all my life because sugar addiction is a real problem with vegetarian diets that tend to be high on refined carbs and sugars. But i made progress fixing it and breakfast was a big part of it. Including high protein and fat sources was a big part of it.
I greatly believe that vegetarians can have a healthy diet. It's a process. It is not easy. Well, easier than an all beef and salt diet.
Why this fascination towards ancient man. We do nothing that our ancestors do and still cling on to their diet. They stayed in caves and lived for less than 20 years on an average didn't they? They weren't civilized. We are the apex predators and the smartest sentient beings. We figured out agriculture , now what? Well, use it so we don't have to end lives of animals to stay alive. Is that too much?!
Human population exploded because of agriculture, as per Yuval Noah Harari and I agree. So, now what? Call Thanos to wipe out half the earth? Nope! We cannot raise so many animals for this much population. Agriculture is way more efficient. Just don't eat so many fucking carbs! You don't have to go ape shit on every living and crawling being.

This summer, the Governor General and her entourage racked up a $93,000 catering bill going to Dubai. (Source: every national media outlet in the country). I did some quick math based on the length of the trip and number of people in her "entourage" (it was 30, just around rap singer numbers). Her staff spent approx. $350 / day on food. Let's be "generous" and admit that Dubai is a high cost jurisdiction (which it is). That is still an outrageous amount for government employees and outstrips anything I have ever spent. I’d really recommend people go listen to Simon Hill’s podcast on plant based eating. It’s not only sustainable, it’s a vastly more effective means of feeding lots of people. Animal ethics aside (which is reason enough to stop eating meat and dairy) - there’s absolutely no question that diets high in saturated fats (which are high in red meat) raises serum cholesterol; a main driver of atherosclerosis. Carbohydrates aren’t inherently evil - infact, eating more fibre is probably the most beneficial way people could improve their diets. The problem is that over-indulgence in processed foods. People can feel good eating these minimalist carnivore diets because it restricts a lot of these foods - but ‘feeling good’ certainly doesn’t equate to positive long-term health outcomes. I understand the temptation to bundle plant based eating in with the woke/progressive types, but this is simply ad-hominem. A well constructed plant-based diet which is high in fibre and unsaturated fats is very likely one of the healthiest diets around, and there is plenty of evidence to support that.

I usually respect peterson but there is a lot of stuff that he did leave out that is very important.
    - Most plant-based agriculture is there to feed the animals we eat - if we were to distribute that to humans more humans could live off of way less
    - He compares the green house emissions by animals in the US whereas a lot of animals that are eaten in the US are imported
    - He does not take into consideration the suffering for animals (sentient beings), where in his own books he quotes the mode of his own being as to "minimize suffering as much as possible"
    - Mulitple studies show that it is indeed possible and healthier to sustain a vegan diet than a food-pyramid diet (he is not wrong with the food pyramid, but carnivore isnt the only alternative, and it is indeed, when having to decide between only meat and only vegan, the worse decision for most people and the environment)
Edit: I looked up the study he quoted where he says removing animals from US would only decrease US GHG by 2.6. That is correct but VERY POORLY PHRASED! It reduces US total contribution to WORLD-WIDE GHG by 2.6 absolute percentage points, meaning that if we only remove animal farming from the US alone (which compared to world-wide animal farming isn't even such a big part) and leave every other country as it is we would already reduce world-wide GHG by 2.6 percentage points, which is A LOT considering US is not the center of the world, neither the biggest nor the most influential country nor the country with most animal farming world-wide. The study he quotes himself does not provide sufficient explanation on why the so-called "nutritional requirements" of the US population are not supported by a plant-based diet. The study says removing all animal live-stock to zero would "decrease agricultural US GHGs [by] 28%", which again is a lot.
@J P Education it would be nice if quoted sources were added to the description as it took very long to find the correct study based on some very unspecific and poorly phrased quote. For all others who are interested:

Further you can't cultivate the same thing every year and forage crops are quite useful for crop rotation. Animal dung is an important fertilizer which has to be replaced by chemical fertilizers if you abolish farm animals.
      - I'm all for buying meat from species-appropriate husbandry and local suppliers. But I don't think that the vegan idea of abolishing animal husbandry is in any way in the interest of animals since it will inevitably result in their extinction (with the applause of the vegan environmentalists, since those animals are a useless burden for the planet and a vicious competitor for the vegan's soy beans). I tried to have a steak a couple weeks later and became very sick again. I was able to eat fish without getting sick, but after a while, due to the cost of fish, I gave that up (did feel great with fish in the diet). Ever since, I have been a vegetarian and still feel great. I stay low with carbs in rice and noodles and have veggies with a low amount of beans. For snacks, fruit. Just sharing my experience. But just last month I purchased two dozen cans of 'Sirloin Burger with Country Vegetables' and 'Classic Chicken Noodle Soup with White Meat Chicken' and to my dismay, all 24 cans contain "bioengineered food ingredients."
The label goes on to state that the "corn, soy and sugar in this product come from genetically modified crops." That's GMO's! Deploying (deliberate use of a military term) GMO's in a nation's food supply is illegal (a criminal act) in 60 countries, including Mexico. Just 2 years ago I read an in-depth article about GMO's. Japanese scientists did the world's most comprehensive analysis of foods containing GMO's and concluded that not only do foods containing GMO's provide considerably less nutritional value but are actually bad for one's health. GMO's cause illness, disease and obesity.
Our government ought to 'tarred and feathered' for allowing these 'empty-calorie-toxins' in our food supply. Again, even Mexico doesn't allow these 'poisons' to be sold as 'food' and Mexico is a 'Third World Country.' Worse still, thanks to 'Commie Joe', 'We The People' (a reference to the Constitution) have to worry about shortages of such 'foods.' And even worse still, the price of these 'modified toxins' went up 50 cents a can since the last time I purchased them in 2021. Apparently in America one even has to pay more to commit 'slow-motion-suicide' these days.

I’ve been vegan for over 10 years and 12 years no meat. I’m the only one in my family with a normal bmi, all the rest of my family eats meat dairy eggs and are all over weight except for myself. Every diet, vegan or non can be healthy or unhealthy. If you eat a lot of junk as a vegan or meat eater you will be fat. I’ve also recently had a full blood panel done as I was curious of my iron, calcium, kidney and liver function and all of the above including the rest of my tests all were positive results with being in the middle to higher end of all the nutrition! My calcium was actually the best. That’s after 12 years no meat and 10 years fully vegan. Do I think it’s sustainable for everyone? No, but I also think that believing that going vegan and eating carbs makes you fat is an extremely outdated idea which is not based on science … at all. The idea of not eating meat making you unhealthy is really strange and truly an American idea as I’ve worked with as a nanny before with Indian families who never in their lives are any meat or eggs, very little dairy in the form off paneer, and over 90% of their diet was lentils and other beans like rajma, which is kidney beans, and Chana or chole which is chickpeas, they eat lentils and rice in so many forms and let me tell you these are the healthiest people I’ve ever seen in my life and they have also been fully vegan for over 20 years with 2 home birthed children, the mom is a heavy weight lifter and major cyclists, they both have masters degrees and have the best bone and teeth structure I’ve ever seen in a person. With their primary protein being lentils. Their parents mom and dad also never have eaten meat in their lives and most their family before that as they were all raised Jain which is a non violent religion. I do truly believe veganism is NOT for everyone, but to deny that it can be healthy is silly. Eating a lot of bread and processed empty carbohydrates is NOT what I’m talking about. A healthy dirty balanced with lots of spices which are all high in minerals , legumes like red lentil, toor dal which is the yellow split pea and many others along with veggies and fruits and grains like quinoa, rice, amaranth, barley. Idc what you say, this has been studied and these things are healthy for you. Yeah sure if you take all the vitamins and fiber from a grain , bleach it white, and then add sugar and fat to it and then spread more fat on it and eat it, no one is saying that’s healthy, and that you won’t put on weight. Every diet is different based off the individual. Vegetarianism and veganism is not a new idea.

It's not the food pyramid recommendations that elevated our disease risk, but the fact that most whole foods, including all whole grains that are higher in carbohydrates yet also contain many micronutrients and fiber, cost more (in $ amount or time needed to prepare) than most packaged foods. So inevitably people will opt for more affordable, convenient, palatable and often addictive packaged foods which are usually not fit for long term consumption. Oreos, skittles, fast food containing high fructose corn syrup and oil, nut butters and generally ultraprocessed foods are not what the food pyramid recommends, yet that's what people in the western world mostly eat.

But, since methane dissipates over 10 years and does not accumulate, the amount in the atmosphere from cattle is constant (actually it’s slightly decreasing since the total head of cattle is decreasing).
It has been roughly constant for 20,000,000 years or so due to vast numbers of Buffalo and Bison on the planet before man wiped them out. If methane from cattle increased global temperatures, even slightly, then after 20,000,000 years the planet would be toast by now.

Anthropological evidence now clearly points to the fact that our ancestors only ate a very small amount of meat (mainly during the winter months) the rest of the time it was tubers, berries, seeds, nuts and fruits. The reason we developed developed fingers and thumbs was to pick and peel these foods (like the great apes). Also much easier and safer than chasing a sabre tooth tiger or a mammoth. One more thing to add, carbohydrates might seem to be the leading cause of diabetes, but, for insulin resistance to occur, the cells' receptors have to be clogged with fat. The type of fat that tends to stick around more is transfats and saturated fats, the latter found mostly in animals. Finally, processed fats like refined oil and butter, regardless if they are saturated or not, are to natural found fats what white floor is to whole grains.

As such, perhaps claiming there is one unified path to making a cohesive internal ecosystem between our body, our gut flora and the food we eat is naive at best and malicious at worst. But what do I know? It's not like I have spent over 30 years living in my body and know when certain diets are throwing things off or helping. Nope, just follow the broad instruction of institutions blindly. That's a great idea.
As a side note. Since switching to a higher protein and fat diet: I have far more energy, require less sleep, have better natural muscle tone, purchase less food due to higher satiety, no longer require caffeine to feel awake, have had several dental appointments in a row where they have complimented my teeth (having had chronic cavity issues before), less brain fog, my anxiety is lower and I feel more competent. I am not saying everybody do this or that this is "the diet". This is MY diet and it is helping me. I recommend you get in touch with your own nutrition and be willing to rethink the way you eat. I am afraid Peterson does not understand one thing in 4:14 - if people bred more livestock, we would also need even more plant production than now, since animals eat plants.
From milk you get around 15 kcal from every 100 kcal of plants eaten by a cow and around 8 kcal in meat from every 100 kcal eaten by an animal (cows are less efficient in terms of that than pigs or chickens, they gain muscle mass slower).

I never heard that the original food pyramid was that bad. I thought carbs weren't that bad for you if you burned through the calories that you ate. I have always used the food pyramid shown as a rough guide to what to eat, and I was never fat. I do try to cut out artificial sweeteners from my diet.
I have traveled abroad, and in all the countries I visited, the people there worried less about what they ate and were less fat. I personally lost weight every time I went overseas even as I laxed my usual dietary constraints. So, I personally believe that corn syrup and other processed foods are much more to blame for obesity in America than the food pyramid.
Even if it's true that carbohydrates are overhyped on the pyramid, do you really think that most people got to be obese from eating too much pasta and bread? I think the problem is too much soda and processed sweets. Whatever problems might exist in the food pyramid, I think the average obese American would actually benefit from following it, since doughnuts and coca cola are obviously so much worse for you than pasta.
In France, when the people were starving before the revolution, they said that they didn't have enough bread. When I was in Russia, I heard something along the lines of "bread gives life," and beer was called "liquid bread". Given these common phrases around bread, it seems safe to assume that bread was historically the most commonly consumed food in Europe by a wide margin. So, blaming obesity on carbs does not make sense, since carbs are an ancient part of our diet and obesity is modern.
The real problem is that people consume more calories than they take in. Secondarily, the problem is that we eat too many processed foods. I can't imagine the food pyramid coming in more than 3rd place in this list. I think it probably actually had a net positive effect if it made some people choose to eat a sandwich sometimes rather than some processed sweets.
I do not like these videos of Jordan Peterson where he reads from a script. He seems simultaneously more judgmental and less well informed than usual.

I think they're overweight because the most successful fast food companies (like Mcdonald's and KFC) and mass market food companies (Pepsi, Coca Cola, Nestle) originate from the United States. People here have perfected marketing and food efficiency to such a degree that people prefer to spend less and get it faster rather than wait and spend more. This isn't a secret or a conspiracy like Jordan here tends to lean to, but rather overly successful economics with lenient government interference.

Harvard has analyzed the pure study, they said. “The Pure study makes headlines but the conclusions are misleading” and “The main messages for nutritional advice have not changed: follow a healthy dietary pattern that includes abundant amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts; moderate amounts of reduced-fat dairy products and seafood; and lower amounts of processed and red meat, sugar-sweetened foods and beverages, and refined grains. Such a dietary pattern does not need to limit total fat intake but the main types of fat should be unsaturated fats from plant sources rather than animal fat.”

The symbiosis of Oxygen Breathers (animals) and Carbon-Dioxide Breathers (Plants) will be maintained with or without mankinds interference just as Homeostasis is maintained within the human body (ie ALOT of meddling is needed to break the equilibrium).

Now, everyone who does a little of gym and diet know that you need a balance of everything. es: 40g fat, 120carbs, 160 pro.
there are many vegan/vegetarian diet that give you the macro needed. There are even vegans bodybuilders!
Now i love meat and i love fish, but we should not forget that, What vegans and vegetarians want us to change is how many of this animal live in inhumane conditions.

That's all nonsense, but don't be sad, because its very very common nonsense. Most people believe it. Make no mistake, vegans are that nutritionally deficient and mentally impaired that they would have all meat banned if possible, which would be absolutely DISASTEROUS for society and set us backward.

while I am big fan of JP, wouldn't the large percentage of overweight people be more realistically explained by fast food and soft drinks (specially), I don't think people would bother going as far as strictly following a government /corporate food pyramid?

Really a shame to see him go off the deep end. Years ago, while being conservative overall and thus not really my thing, he still had SOME decent things to say that progressives would lose their shit over.
But lately, it's just nonsense after nonsense.

My wife had a similar story in which once she turned vegan "for the health benefits" she started consuming insane amounts of carbs to replace the satiating animal fat and protein she had thus far been consuming, she immediately put on a lot of weight. And she didn't stuff herself with sweets, either, just lots of bread, rice, empty plant protein in the form of beans, starches, even followed the "combine starches and legumes to get your amino acids" bullshit, and the like. In short, she did what the food industry and the vegan brainwashing told her to do.
She said that a lack of animal fat and protein (which your brain is built from, btw) caused sunken eyes, yellow skin, severe mental problems, no concentration, bad memory and teeth problems she never had before. Not to mention her hair was falling out at a startling rate and her nails were breaking.
In short, she did everything the industries told her to do.
She said that the day she broke down and ate an egg (and with what guilt that was, too) her brain suddenly switched. She said it was incredible.
Hell, throughout history, people knew what to eat. Even peasants in Poland, while they had less access to meat, they still kept animal products (dairy and fat) a huge part of their diets.
It's all a plan to keep people sick and dependent. Even Socrates wrote about how you can subjagte people by forcing them a plant based diet.

Cause vegan don't consume milk , honey etc . But if you follow a vegetarian valance diet there is no need to worry. Lots of buddist monks already live with vegetarian diet . Milking a vow is not giving pain neither do taking honey if we take in right amount from them

There is no such thing as empty plant protein. Also, plant protein is not in a form of starch. Starch is a carbohydrate. You don't know what you're talking about.

I rarely eat bread and only eat brown rice. Lots of tofu, tempeh, lentils, nutritional yeast, seitan, etc. Sounds like your wife wasn’t eating right and probably not eating enough nutritional yeast/fortified foods/B12 supplement. That’s her fault. I know plenty of healthy long-term vegans including myself.

Meat is neither necessary nor good for you. And as for milk and dairy products, they're not good either. And we are also the only species on Earth which drinks the milk of other animals. Cows' milk is for cows, not for human beings. So-called veganism is the only way forward whether people want to accept it or not. I would never tell people what to eat because it's not any of my business apart from anything else but veganism is definitely the healthiest diet. Meat is simply murder served up on a plate, and I want nothing to do with the murder industry.
