Something I had totally overlooked in recent years. At a local fitting recently the fitter in one of the final checks just checked grip and was like 'Oh, you could do with an extra layer' Never considered it, previous fittings never mentioned it. Changed out all my irons and stuff with new grips (Golf Price MCC non align) and added an extra layer. Such a tiny change but just 'feels' nicer. The 'try one' is a good shout too. I normally put a new grip on my 7iron when I'm trying out a new grip to see if I like it, before committing it to the entire set

At that point in a fitting if a fitter is doing a great job getting you dialed in I would trust the suggestion. It's not the most expensive experiment - Thomas

I started in the days of wrapped leather and loved the feel of the trigger finger resting firmly in the groove of the wrap. Tried the leather wrap-like offerings and in fact tried just about all the grips in the thumbnail.
Today when the price of grips is about the price of a whole Tour Velvet MacGregor Tourney Eye-o-matic driver, the cheapest decent grip, the Tour Velvet is just fine. 13 clubs can be regripped for under $60.
Playing gloveless (except in rain,) my choice after 50 years is the Iomic Sticky 2.3, double tape under the right hand only.
They’re on the firm side with a noticeable tackiness (not nearly as much as Winn) that doesn’t fade. They also last more than a season of 60-80 rounds plus 600-1000 practice balls a week.
If not for my wedding band, my hands would be soft and callous-free like Sam Snead. That’s quite an improvement from early days when I needed razor blades to shave down callouses and touching my girlfriend constantly scratched her. I suggest that large callouses may indicate an inappropriate grip.
Like beauty, grips are of the beholder.

One of my issues with standards iron fittings (other than typically just using a 7 iron) is that the grip is usually set in stone. A lot of different research experiments have shown that grip and especially grip size can completely change a dispersion pattern and shot shape.

Good point. If only we had 2-3 more times the amount of shafts for fitting components. However it's just not cost effective. We can blow some grips off and on to get that feel during a fitting - Thomas

Started playing the pure dtx and the texture was awesome. Now they make one to mimic the plus4 and it’s awesome. Deff good to try new grips and textures cuz you never know what’s gonna speak to you

Tour velvet all the way. I have small glove hands and always used the standard size. Now I use the tour velvet +4 in midsize. Now that I'm older 67, the midsize helps me withy ball striking and power. My swing is more fluid now.

I’ve tried a number of different grips and have always gone back to the Golf Pride corded Tour Velvet (BCT). Nice responsive feel and the club just feels like a part of my hands. I heard a rumor recently that they might discontinue the corded version. Well if that’s true I’m gonna by a few cases to stock up, lol. 😎

Been in MCC +4 for at least the past 7-8 years, whenever they came out. Was in MCC with extra wraps under the right hand before that lol.

You also have to factor in the weight differences among different grips affecting swing weight as well which can also affect your feel perception.

The stock grip on every club for me is simply too slippery, I always replace every grip on every club I buy immediately.

I’m looking for a soft grip, but more durable. I played the soft super stroke cut they wore super fast. Was changing the driver almost every month and half Looking for a soft grip that will last.
I currently game lamkin sonar. Would like something a little softer. No wrap
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I do play in all weather.
