In Africa we are not allowed to marry cousins if you happen to marry you are punished and a special taboo(tradition) has to be done. It is strictly prohibited
Some things put in place to prevent that:
1. You are raised to understand that your cousin's are your brother's and sisters....in my tribe there is no word for cousin...I refer to my male cousins as brothers and females as sisters
2. In courtship, when the families get involved because things are getting serious, a lot of background checks are done to find out about ancestry. You cannot share the same blood and marry

Council House, benefits. 47% of all special needs children in the UK are from Pakistani cousin marriages. This couple had three special needs, but still continued to breed. They wouldn't if they had to pay for them personally.

i work with someone who's parents are first cousins and all his other relatives (aunts, uncles, etc) are all cousins. all i'll say is it's a "religious practice." my coworker has some developmental disabilities and is really short but you can have a normal conversation with him just like anyone else. he's literally the nicest person you'll ever meet.

hearing those kids in pain is heartbreaking. If the parents aren't smart enough to understand math and genetics, I think government intervention is ok in these cases. Having travelled in Pakistan, this is not a new thing at all.

Cousins marrying was common in the past within the Pakistani community. Increasingly the community are opting to marry people outside their own race let alone relatives.
Perhaps if they had to pay for the practice, (which is something that could be prevented) then it might stop. It's cruel to the children as they will have no quality of life. So sad. I thought it was illegal in this country - obviously not.

If a God exists interbreeding within your own bloodline must be the highest sin. You are actively dooming your offspring or their offspring at risk to damaging health effects that will be apparent at birth or linger until it shows up at a later date.

Im a mom of 3 and could never imagine knowing I did something I could prevent, how can these woman live knowing they are the ones who made thier kids this way! The marriage of cousins is a custom designed to keep property and assets in the family. The parents being first cousins is only part of the risk. If The grandparents and great grandparents and great, great grandparents were also first cousins the risk of a genetic abnormality increases exponentially . The children suffer for a custom that is motivated by keeping money and property in their family. The cost in suffering and money is astronomical.
