Frank's boots are TANKS. Very well-made. Very nice looking. I bought a pair with composite toes and some other custom features. So they're awesome conversation pieces, but I can't wear them for more than a couple of hours before I have to take them off. I gave up trying to stretch them. When I did the outline of my feet, I wore extra thick socks, so I was very surprised that they were made too small. So I suggest ordering a bit bigger than your outline is.

Great video. Nice to see Frank’s get some love. I grabbed a pair of his Front Range boots when he had them $100 off last month and they are just fantastic. Perfect all-around boot for those of who aren’t logging or cutting fire lines, but still need some solid arch support. Smaller operation and lower overhead than the other PNW makers. 7:22. There's likely a few things going on here: 1. Like all 6 of the major PNW bootmakers, Frank's has a ridiculously high profit margin on his SKUs because (despite everyone on this channel lusting after them) the volume is just not there for $500+ workboots. Few boots sold results in an inability to employ economies of scale. 2. Yes, you are correct - this is almost certainly going to be a loss-leader, though I'd wager, given my point 1 above, that a margin exists, but will be quite small. I do believe they are still making a nice profit off these (see point 3 as well). 3. You analyzed the materials to determine the BOM cost, which ostensibly appears quite close to the 'expensive'/standard option; I suspect, however, much of the cost reduction is coming from deletions to certain build steps. I wouldn't be surprised if these boots require about 50% of the build time as the $700 pairs. 4. Frank's almost certainly pulled a "McRib" (wherein McDonalds seemingly randomly and unpredictably releases the McRib, but in reality they do so only when there a surplus/market-saturation of pork). They got a (almost certainly a one-time) batch of lower tensile strength (but similar thickness) leather from one or more suppliers. They'd be foolish to pass up a bargain.
Of all of the equipment you would need for climbing telephone poles, the right boots are paramount. The high heel for securing the climber to your foot and the proper shank that supports your weight when you’re hanging on a pole for hours at a time could save your life. Spend the extra money for the right boots
This was great information. Thank you. They are beautiful boots from what I see. Does this mean they can customize the boot for someone like myself that needs a decent sized toe box because of toe issues like bunions? I also have very flat feet. Would you recommend this boot even for us guys with flat feet? Thank you for another awesome video Carl.
Make them in 6-8 inch high with 430 vibrams soles that are rebuildable with a shorter heel stack. Let the customer make the decision if they choose to do a rebuild or buy a new pair.
This is great to know ! I had no idea that there were so manny boot makers out there . I have had red wings and currently were Chippewa they’ve been a real good pair of boots ! I’ll keep franks in mind for my next time ! Thanks for the info and great video I liked and subscribed!
I bought (my program did) a pair of whites firefighter boots because people talked about them so much in camp, Only wore them one season. They killed my flat feet. Went back to my sears roebuck boots. Got my first oair in the 1980s I still wear a pair bought in 2000.
I sure wish they'd make a patriot steel toe - my job requires safety footwear and all of the budget pnw boots lack that option. I went with whites hillyard and I'm liking em so far, but I'd love a pair to rotate with em
Why is Russell Moccasins, never mentioned? One of the fewest boots built from the bottom up and not the top down. An American hand-built boot for 124 yrs from the banks of the Fox River in Berlin, Wisconsin.
anyone know how franks compare to whites in terms of size? I've been on the fence about getting a pair of these, my whites smoke jumpers are about 30 years old now and are too narrow. The footbed still feels amazing, just molded to my feet perfectly. the actual width of them are too narrow now. My whites are 10.5 D, I was hoping a 10.5 E or EE would work in this boot.
It depends on the last... White's & Frank's both use the 55 & the HNW, so those would be the same. Frank's has limited sizes in White's 4811 last, and all 3 lasts mentioned above are the same size. Additionaly Frank's has the popular 1977 last which is a 1/2 size different. (but if you mean the Patriot specificly, built on the 55, then yes, Frank's is the same size) Regardless I would let Frank's do the fit-sheet to ne sure your sizing hasn't changed more than what you have observed
As an electrician I wear through the toes on most boots in a few weeks. Ive been wearing Irish Setter Kasotas with the rubber to caps and they're pretty good for the money, but I'd like to get into some handmade boots. Is the leather thick enough on these boots or would you recommend getting the additional leather toe cap?
13four whore here. You will blow through the double toe also. I've been wearing the round toe Thorogoods and painting the Tuff Toe on as it's eaten through. Working mostly on inground airfield lighting eats through even the Keen rubber toes in weeks. I've tried them all over 25 years now.
They don't come in my size. White's seems to charge more than everybody for no apparent reason, but Frank's can run up to $800 or $900 already if you just customize a few things, too.
@@davidkulmaczewski4911 No, they all run big and start at size 8 which is actually more like 9.5 or something. Inother words, they don't sell any boots in my size at this price, and probably a lot of other guys who don't have hoofs. Is that just a troll issue?
I was just telling my wife I was going to be needing to send my Nicks Builder Pros In for a resolve soon, and this could be the answer to a much needed second pair of work boots, though I am still leaning towards Nicks Wedge Workers or Travelers.
I have known Nick's, White's, Wesco, etc for years, but own None of their workboots. One pair of chukka's from Whites, but does that count? No. however... I have FOUR Frank's. All custom work. I love them all. All custom work.
I love these boots, and the quality of the build. That said, I have no use for 10” boots, plus I’ve got fat calves and hobbit feet. I have a pair of 6” JK Boots O.T.s…and I’m guessing I’ll be adding a pair of JK 300X. I’ll by a pair of Franks one day, but they’ll be an 8” model.
I wore Westco Jobmasters for 30+ years. They were perfect for my work in Montana's woods. I see no reason to switch to other boots made by companies that keep changing ownership.
Certainly no good reason to change what works great for you. Wesco certainly makes great boots. If you find your arches starting to fail as you get older though, then the Spokane brands are definitely where you'll want to turn.
One reason: I placed an order 9nmonths ago and was told it would be 11 months. Checked in 2 weeks ago only to be told it's 18-20nmonths, despite the website saying 16 months now. Frank's had what I wanted on the shelf.
@@brighammmer Wow. I used to buy mine off the shelf in an Army/Navy store in Missoula, that specialized in gear for loggers and woods workers. Been a while, though.
I have a pair of Highlander 2s and a pair of Patriots. I dont have any issues with the #2s being a higher price point. You my #2s are highly customized and the leather is clearly from the best parts available on the hide. The Patriots are a one and done no options available made out of the 2nds leather basically. 2 different products.
Nicks: "...killing our margins, which prevented us from paying our employees more..." Translation: "We owners weren't able to buy as many Mercedeses as we wanted."
I was wondering would logger style boots like these be ok for people with flat feet? I find I have getting a lot of pain resulting from my flat feet and I was wondering if this style of boot would help or cause more issues
I got flat feet too. I tried a pair of iron rangers and they don't have much of a heel so they were fine. They just seemed hard for the first few wears but I got used to it. Then I got a pair of Drew's contractor boots and the heal was much higher and hard too. So I wore thick socks and put in a cushon-ey insoles and it was fine. Wore them around the house like that the first day, took out the insoles the next day around the house and it didn't seem so hard or steep in the arch. In fact I think it's therapeutic cuz it forces our flat feet into a natural arch. Just ease your way into it bruh and you'll be fine. I flattened my feet by jumping off the roof of my house as a youth, probably damaged the growth plates in my knees else Id ove been taller for sure. In the boots I'm as tall as I should have been. 😂
Great video you are always positive which is good and refreshing. I think it would make an even better video if you could cut a pair of Drews, Franks, Nicks, JK & Whites, all in the same video.
Viberg isn’t making work boots anymore :( they’re even cutting back on rugged leather options with their service boots. Really seem to be focusing on dressy/fashion builds
It's weird, they still do but theyre sold under a different website... its confusing. workboot.com/collections/viberg I spoke with Brett Viberg a few months ago and they're in the middle of re-vamping their whole image. It sounded like he was tired of doing all these collaborations and wanted to focus on the story of Viberg themselves.
I got a pair, filmed them a bunch and then returned them. I could barely even walk in them! They made my Builder Pros seem like slippers. They're nail-down construction with a triple sole, which might work well when standing on pegs but not for general use. I still have the footage though, and maybe I'll make something with it one day...
It's really not a terrible business decision actually they're making a production boot with little variation, it's perfect for training new people. the patriot is the perfect hook for the consumer you're getting a premium boot at a discounted price that they'll resole but won't rebuild, because the rebuild or a new pair is basically the same price. Now you've got 5 years or more into this brand you know your size you know how it's going to fit you know the break in so why not spend the $200 more and get the boot that can be rebuilt. Worst-case scenario they sell you another $349 pair of boots.
@@CarlMurawskiI got to talk to her, I have placed my order for some Patriots in black/rough out and hopefully that will hide some of the imperfections seen on the pair you reviewed! Thanks for the advice they were super helpful and now I’m eagerly waiting for my pair to show up. They’re a great looking boot and value for the money.
@@CarlMurawskiI just got mine in the mail, I’m blown away with the quality for the money. These things are absolute tanks, I can’t wait to get them broken in. The rough out looks sharp and the only slight imperfections in the look of the smooth upper is hidden by my pants. Thank you for putting this review out there allowing me to find and purchase them. Keep up the great work your videos have pushed me to invest in quality work wear and I haven’t been let down yet!
It's just too bad that you can't get a boot this tough that's also quick and inexpensive to resole. They could probably go with a one piece vibram lug outsole and glue it to the midsole, it wouldn't be as tough but would still be a much tougher than a redwing or Carolina logger and could probably be resoled for $50. They'd get higher profit margins too, and I think people would understand having a slightly cheaper construction choice for the purpose.
Resole is the rubber that touches the ground. Rebuild is everything you can see beneath a bootcut pair of jeans. So everything except uppers with lace eyes & hooks
True to size as far as they describe on their website, maybe a little skinny depending on the sock. I wear between an 11 and 11 1/5 in sneakers/moccasins (maybe 10 1/2 - 11 if I could buy wide) and a 10D is a firm and well fitting size with something thin. 10 1/2 E would be fine with a heavy wool sock
China definitely ain't making anything of this quality 😂 Japan does, but for four times as much. Indonesia does too. But even those that do can't, or at least don't, match this foot bed

YEAH TEAM FRANKS!
10 inch boot is kinda beyond my needs of ankle support
8" is much more my taste as well.
For walking around in hunting areas ten inch boots are best in order to keep your feet dry imo. I love my made in US Matterhorns ( my army days )
@@arthurbrumagem3844 maybe if it has that full leather one piece lip to prevent water from getting in over completely separated lip.
Did you ever make the comparison video with Drew? I can’t find it. 😔
Franks is the best. I’ve got a pair of their front ranges and a pair of the ground pounders. Nicest people and best quality available!
What is the heel height on this boot?
2"
Might be the first PNW boot I pick up 🤔
The customer service doesn't get much better than at Franks. I think you'll be VERY impressed.
At this price point which would you go with Frank's or Drew's?
Love wearing Logger Boots.
Yo Carl cool to see you representing the American sock makers.
I bought (my program did) a pair of whites firefighter boots because people talked about them so much in camp,
Only wore them one season. They killed my flat feet. Went back to my sears roebuck boots. Got my first oair in the 1980s
I still wear a pair bought in 2000.
It looks like a very fancy up Doc Martin style boots
I sure wish they'd make a patriot steel toe - my job requires safety footwear and all of the budget pnw boots lack that option. I went with whites hillyard and I'm liking em so far, but I'd love a pair to rotate with em
I think they might!
They do! They’re just made to order vs the soft toe patriots are both made to order and ready to ship.
Oh damn. I had some redwings before, a friend gave to me , they lasted a long time.
Why is Russell Moccasins, never mentioned? One of the fewest boots built from the bottom up and not the top down. An American hand-built boot for 124 yrs from the banks of the Fox River in Berlin, Wisconsin.
No reason in particular, I'd love to learn more about them.
anyone know how franks compare to whites in terms of size?
(but if you mean the Patriot specificly, built on the 55, then yes, Frank's is the same size)
Regardless I would let Frank's do the fit-sheet to ne sure your sizing hasn't changed more than what you have observed
You could have them rebuilt by a cobbler or another maker. Bakers in Oregon will.
When comparing the franks patriot boot and the Drew’s logger boot, which would u say is the higher quality boot?
Spokane here yes there is 😀
Franks is the best
Just here to boots the algorithm, but cool boots nonetheless
Never bought a pair of logger boots so fast in my life 😂😂😂
They don't come in my size. White's seems to charge more than everybody for no apparent reason, but Frank's can run up to $800 or $900 already if you just customize a few things, too.
All these companies ruin the upper leather with their company stamp. I wonder how much they charge to LEAVE THAT OFF.
Tried the Drew's already. Didn't fit.
Dude who are you replying to stfu
"They don't come in my size." has got to be the most ridiculous comment I've seen in a while. What, do you have hoofs or something? What a goof.
@@davidkulmaczewski4911 No, they all run big and start at size 8 which is actually more like 9.5 or something. Inother words, they don't sell any boots in my size at this price, and probably a lot of other guys who don't have hoofs. Is that just a troll issue?
nice price for nice boots ,but those stiches not being hidden at the outsole will not survive heavy hardcore usage
I was just telling my wife I was going to be needing to send my Nicks Builder Pros In for a resolve soon, and this could be the answer to a much needed second pair of work boots, though I am still leaning towards Nicks Wedge Workers or Travelers.
The Travelers are excellent, those are my "not in the mood to wear a tank" boots.
Thanks Carl. These sure are great value boots! Could these be used for hiking and hillwalking?
I wonder why frank left nicks?
I have known Nick's, White's, Wesco, etc for years, but own None of their workboots. One pair of chukka's from Whites, but does that count? No.
however...
I have FOUR Frank's. All custom work. I love them all. All custom work.
Just getting into climbing. Is a leather shank good enough vs a steel shank?
I love these boots, and the quality of the build. That said, I have no use for 10” boots, plus I’ve got fat calves and hobbit feet. I have a pair of 6” JK Boots O.T.s…and I’m guessing I’ll be adding a pair of JK 300X. I’ll by a pair of Franks one day, but they’ll be an 8” model.
Whats a good place to send boots to hale the soles redone? Haven't had any luck finding someone locally
Hey Carl! Not in the market for boots or socks right now. Stopped by to hit the LIKE button. Stay well my friend.
Much appreciated my friend! I hope you’re well brother
@@brighammmer Okay, I get that. But I wonder if Wesco would have had something for you on the shelf?
@@robertodebeers2551 they did not. Nor did any vendors. As an Oregonian I tried to keep my money here. Spokane is close enough though.
"Mercedeses" lol! My preciousssss
Nice looking boots other than the tall heels on them. My poor ass can't afford them anyway.
Always have worn moc toes. Wedge sole no heel. Anyone here go to a heel boot from a wedge? Low back pain? other issues?
Reminds me of JK 300 pricing
I’m gonna order Drew’s or Franks. Waiting on the review. Any idea when we can expect it?
I’ll try to get it done this summer, maybe in July. I’m currently getting my new bandsaw set up.
BUY AMERICAN 👍
Not american but BUY AMERICAN. For rugged boots, no one makes it better than the good ol Americans!
Drew’s 10 inch logger boot is very similar to these at the same price
VERY similar!
Is Drew’s US made ?
@@arthurbrumagem3844 I could be wrong but I think they are made in Mexico. I know there main boots are USA made tho
Great video!! Have you done a review of the Viberg work boots??
I got a pair, filmed them a bunch and then returned them. I could barely even walk in them! They made my Builder Pros seem like slippers. They're nail-down construction with a triple sole, which might work well when standing on pegs but not for general use. I still have the footage though, and maybe I'll make something with it one day...
@Carl Murawski I have a pair that I wear at work everyday and love them, but yeah you should do a video of them with the footage you have definitely 🙂
Hi! Enjoy your videos
does the Patriot have a soft or reinforced toe? thanks
Soft toe. As far as I know you can order a steel/composite toe but thats an ~8 week lead time
It's really not a terrible business decision actually they're making a production boot with little variation, it's perfect for training new people. the patriot is the perfect hook for the consumer you're getting a premium boot at a discounted price that they'll resole but won't rebuild, because the rebuild or a new pair is basically the same price. Now you've got 5 years or more into this brand you know your size you know how it's going to fit you know the break in so why not spend the $200 more and get the boot that can be rebuilt. Worst-case scenario they sell you another $349 pair of boots.
How accurate is the size conversion chart? I measure a 12 on the brannock and they have 11.5 in stock
typically half size down from Brannock
Give Frank a call and they will help you out
@@jimshen0308 going to call when they open thank you for the response!
I'd definitely call Michelle at Franks and speak with her. Not only is she fantastic to work with, she can give you the info you're looking for.
Any idea if you can wear orthotics with these PNW boots?
Yes you can but you need to size up in width.
@@thomashardy1851 interesting. It seems without going custom that many brands only size up to a 13 standard. I need a wide and maybe even a 14w
@@D0NTsmokeCRACK I think franks goes up to a 14FF (4EEEE?) size.
I’m a dummy. What’s the difference between a rebuild and a resole?
Resole is the rubber that touches the ground.
Rebuild is everything you can see beneath a bootcut pair of jeans. So everything except uppers with lace eyes & hooks
I'm sure the margin is still large.
The Drews snub got me
Nice boots. I am sick of Patriots though !
What about the fit
True to size as far as they describe on their website, maybe a little skinny depending on the sock. I wear between an 11 and 11 1/5 in sneakers/moccasins (maybe 10 1/2 - 11 if I could buy wide) and a 10D is a firm and well fitting size with something thin. 10 1/2 E would be fine with a heavy wool sock
Can you recommend a company that sell boxer briefs
My go to is the Power Shift model from the company 2UNDR
Jk has the 300 and 300x, whites has a $350 model they sell at boot barn too.
I'm sure Chinese made boots are the same quality. American made anything is something many Americans can't afford.
China definitely ain't making anything of this quality 😂
Japan does, but for four times as much.
Indonesia does too.
But even those that do can't, or at least don't, match this foot bed
