The car that invigorated a generation of racing enthusiasts. The Ex-Works/Team ORECA 2000 Chrysler Viper GTS R which ran as number 91 and 51 during the 2000 Season. It wore the iconic Playstation livery while dominating at the 24hrs of Le Mans winning its class and placing 7th overall. Le Mans was just one of eight victories for Chassis C31 on the road to a 3-year sweep in which Viper Team ORECA won the ALMS Championship. Many of us remember piloting this car virtually in video games such as Gran Turismo much like Olivier Beretta, Karl Wendlinger and Dominique Dupuy did in real life.

Gran Turismo was definitely a big influence in making the Viper my favorite car as a kid. Purchased a 96 GTS a few weeks ago.

My father's name is Ken Nowak. He was a major part of development on not only the original RT-10 and GTS but also the GTS-R. He recently slipped into a diabetic coma and came out a little changed but the other day he still got excited and smiled to show me a picture of him in a 'legends' magazine. I'd be interested to know if anyone can help me find pretty much any reference videos and articles for Ken/Kenneth Nowak so I can put something together for him. Thanks everyone. I'm still proud of him for this beautiful piece of engineering. Kinda want to see more humanity in him and the memories may be just the thing.

The first gen Viper GTS is easily the best looking of them all.

This folks, is the greatest american underdog story never told. I wish the truth was more well heard of Americas greatest handbuilt production supercar, but if it were I would not be able to have afforded my 2000 GTS.
The '98 Team Oreca Viper GTS-R is the car that sparked en fueled my interest in motorsports, driving and cars in general when I was still a snot nosed boy! Spent hours watching live coverages of the Le Mans series, the FIA GT Champ. and visiting local GT-races whenever I could to see, hear, smell and feel these machines!!! Great video guys!!!

This was the car that effectively forced the C5R to evolve into the C6. Pretty impressive considering the Vette emblem is from start to finish.

Never touched Gran Tourismo or modern (i.e. post 1980) console games, but just the name sends me back to PC Game from just pre-Millennium a couple of years into my engineering job, enjoying title "Le Mans 24 Hours", and the infamous grid presentation, here among "VIPER team ORECA!" spoken with capital letters Nearest behind-the-seat experience have been in tons of simracing games/mods for the GTS-R model.
Was lucky to hear one real world rumble as invitational to a classic race car meeting. Never ever get tired of this special V10 breed of sound ❤❤
I would always use the corvette(dream car), viper and white and red Supra when I was little because they seemed iconic to me at the time now that I’m older and can interpret things better I can finally see just how iconic they are.

I was always into cars as a kid. First racing video game was Gran Turismo 1, I was about 11. Viper immediately became my favorite car ever, still til this day. I remember breaking night watching the Oreca Vipers in various racing series. I'll never forget those days and nights.
I was like, 3yrs old when my father got me a hotwheelz set. My favorite car in that set, was the Viper.
When GT5 came out on the PS3, i had seen the Viper going around those bends like a knife cutting butter.
That day i realized how amazing my favorite car was. I couldn't even keep up with it, the car was just that fast.
Even though i was only five, i knew how to race on the game, cuz i was born with that PS controller in my hand. The Viper left me, and i was not going to catch it either. 😂😂

As an owner of a 96 GTS and kid going to watch these race back in the day I just wish the video better captured the true sound of these V10s. With equal length headers they sound awesome. The video doesn’t capture it.
dodge viper from late 90s to 00's are amongst the first car that i know and idolise, though i was born 4-5 years later, this truly is an icon, well done for creating such masterpiece, i remember putting a viper as a wallpaper in my dad's phone (i didn't have one at the time), and it has a special place in my heart

The Dodge Viper is one of the most well rounded race cars. Being overkill in the GT2 class beating the Porsche 911s and staying competitive against GT1 equivalent cars such as the C5R in ALMS / the FIAGT against Lister Storms and Ferraris 550s
I fell in love with this car seeing a couple being run at my local SCCA. Gotta love that engine note!

@@hagestadI think he meant it more as the viper being dominant in its class during its reign. The Viper was a very fast race car. Surely the Viper could have seen even more success but Chrysler/Dodge stopped development of the platform for racing. Porsche has seen sustained success simply bcuz racing is how they sell their cars. The Chrysler bean counters could care less about racing pedigree to sell cars.
@@kenxiong6830 Development is one thing but if i remember correctly they limited either number of cylinders or engine capacity. After that one of the teams still competed with 2 cylinders removed from the car lol.
@@hagestad that is correct. The viper was too dominant in terms of power. It was still a winner even with only 8 cylinders running
And the average American were only talking about a quarter mile run of some random cars.

The viper is a very under rated car its sad that they don't make them anymore and when I see one I the road it's very rare, yet I see more ferraris
They have recently been gaining more attention! Prices have seemingly risen about 20% for the RT/10 and GTS models.

This beast was awesome in GT2 and rivaled the likes of the C5.R and the Supra. Granted those race cars were a bit easier to drive lol
The C5 was not in GT2. It first became a part of the franchise in GT3 and up.
I like the Chrysler version of the viper I like the way they have the PlayStation sponsor and have the Gran Turismo logo on the windshield
I have to try with my whole soul to be the best so I can one day drive one of these. People who often say that, cant live up to it and survive a long life.

most of the kids in our era either went to pick some JDM (me also) like skyline gtr r34,rx7 fd,toyota supra A80 or european exotic like porsche 911 993,mclaren f1,ferrari f50. i got into video game,motorsport and automotive with some of US sports and muscles like the viper,mustang,camaro

You are right about that but in our opinion the Viper was the car that sparked that American resurgence in endurance racing which led to domination by the Vipers through the late 90's and very early 2000's and later the Corvette C5-R starting in 2001.

Today, race results depend on bop. Ford GTE is the best in the highest category GT, but Ford and Ferrari had the most ballast and the weakest boost. while the Porsche, by contrast, had no ballast and had the largest restrictor. The organizers simply give victorys to Volkswagen. Only in super gt there is still a fight for the title

Was there ever a "Chrysler Viper" as he said in the video? Wasn't it always a dodge? I'm so confused. Their overalls say Dodge but on the car it says Chrysler. Help me out here.
The Vipers were branded as Chryslers in Europe, and Dodge in the USA!

The technical name is 1998 Dodge Viper GT2 Commemorative Edition. Only 100 were made. People commonly refer to it as a GTSR

the gts was the 1st drivable us car i can remember of ..then the c6 .. from the muscle car era after the glorious cobra only the mustangs and maybe camaros were drivable.. I mean compared to eu sports cars !
in my mind everything over 1300 kg or 2600 pounds is no sports car what so ever..is more of a highway car like they say GT car

A shame they stopped production in 2017. Should they return, may the price compete with a GT-R, beat a 911 by a mile and be as plentiful as the Mustang.
Porsche spent so much years and money on developing the 911's it would be next to impossible to just make up a car that beats it massively, especially while keeping costs low.
So sad to see what dodge and the Chrysler group have become. They are a shell of their former shelf being chopped up and sold to the highest bidder.
