    I watch your videos quite a bit these days, you come across as one having integrity. It started when I looked for dovetail jointing videos.
    No laud rock guitar music or over existed commentary. Just watched your dads workshop tours ect.
    Really enjoyed them.
    Your accent is little like two of my cousins who now live in Canada but were born in Germany. Honesty always stands the test of time.

    The great irony is this video is actually a kinda good tool review... now I'm interested in battery powered tools.

    • @ensen89
      @ensen89 6 лет назад +12

      You might wanna look into Makita. They have battery chainsaws that can be operated with one hand, which will come in handy a lot of times.
      Hitachi makes them too, but they are way more expensive. At least where I live, I don't know about the US. And Hitachi has, as far as I know, the biggest cordless framing nailer on the market.
      Millwaukee intodruced some really impressive stuff as well. You can find a video on the RR Buildings channel.
      The powertools are not that expensive. What is expensive are the batterys and chargers. So you are more or lesse bonded to a brand once you started with it.
      If you plan on travelling with your tools or taking them to job sites, Makita and Festool are worth a look. They come in systainers with is so handy when being on the road.

    • @ensen89
      @ensen89 6 лет назад +4

      I forgot to mention that Metabos come in systainers as well. And I have seen hitachi systainers once.
      The Samurai Carpenter painted all his Makita tools black. He got kinda angry with Makita, but I don't know what happened.

      The Bosch 18v & 36v outdoor range is pretty good too in my experience of (2) their tools.

    • @stefantrethan
      @stefantrethan 6 лет назад +6

      Fit and finish is great with Bosch. You just don't want to put their tools down. But it sucks that they use different batteries for their blue professional tools and outdoor tools. The 36V range again uses differnet batteries than the 18V.
      For this reason alone I chose Makita instead. Their 18V battery poweres everything, and for 36V you just plug in two batteries. Their tools are not as nice, the handles suck, but endless power with the brushless ones.

    Sorry to hear about the bad experience. I know you don’t like Patreon, but the good thing about it is that the payment can be recurring unlike a one time purchase of some plans. I know John wasn’t happy with his Patreon (that 1% video), but at least I feel better giving him a few bucks a month for all of the hard work put into the videos.

    • @HeiszWandelproject
      @HeiszWandelproject  6 лет назад +4

      actually, depends on how you count 1%. He doesn't have 1% of subs, that's for sure, but people hit the sub button willy nilly. He probably does have 1% of fans that follow him regularly (and that number is quite a bit smaller than subscribers)

    • @JamesBiggar
      @JamesBiggar 6 лет назад

      Every little bit adds up. Patreon is easy, low management. Most people using it aren't typically searching for content but instead using it as a means to directly support the creators they like. It's not ideal in terms of how many YT subs actually become Patrons, but the list continues to grow for most creators and there are no strings attached aside from Patreon's cut (which is fair imo). RUclips is also trial testing sponsorships with a few handpicked channels on this platform. Hopefully that will become a feature for everyone in the near future.

      My little channel gets 0.4% subscriber conversion to Patreon supporter.
      Fortunately, youtube is just a hobby for me. But I suspect it would take a helluva lot of marketing and other non-fun stuff to turn it onto a real income, rather than just partially offsetting the cost of making the videos.

    It's nice to see that the world is not just about advertising. The big companies are trying to fill our entire life with their commercials. One aspect of it is to make people believe that ads are necessary and unavoidable and they are the only way to support certain creative individuals. Good to know that it's not true.

  • @rocketsurgery8337

    Years ago I worked for a large general contractor and they painted everything red, trucks, cranes, excavators, dump trucks, service trucks... they did zero advertising but everybody knew their name. DeWalt tools did the same thing with the yellow plastic. Personally I think DeWalt is one notch above Black & Decker in quality. I've used them a lot over the last 25 years but I would personally not own any of them.

    I'll never buy another dewalt tool. I purchased a cordless set as it was on sale consisting of a drill, jigsaw, recip saw, circular saw and an impact driver.
    Right out of the box the drill chuck had a wobble in it. The set used NiCd batteries that lasted no time between charges..ie: one rip on a 4x8 sheet of plywood with the circular saw and the battery was dead.
    Then I bought the Lithium ion 20V conversion kit and it's a little better but not by much.
    DeWalt cordless is fine for weekend projects as the batteries decide when it's time for a beer and that turns out to be quite frequent and then you end up getting nothing done because you're just too damn drunk to do it!
    My advice is this: If you want to get any serious work done don't buy DeWalt

    It's really interesting to hear your experiences and reflection on this. Makes me wonder whether some of the other channels I watch, who have stuck with sponsorship, are maybe just trapped in an abusive relationship with their sponsor.
    My own experience of brand-specific sponsorship is similar to yours - my channel is fairly small, but I was approached directly by the manufacturer of a not-too-well-known brand of audio equipment - they started off talking about providing free samples for me to review, but the conversation quickly turned into them paying me fixed amounts to say only nice things about their products, and to help them game the Amazon review system.
    I backed out of that but I lost money on it - I've had other brands approach me since, but now I just politely turn them down.
    Reviewing things for retailers (not the brand manufacturers) has gone a little better, I'd say. Seems like those are sometimes OK with the review being balanced and containing a mix of praise and criticism.

    So many once good content creators have gone down that path, and it only hurts them imho. The whole RUclips as a primary income thing is such a disgusting animal. I think the content was better years ago, before people made creating videos a career. I liked your older content better, though I'm still a loyal supporter. When he says sales he means the plans he sells to the tools he builds himself from scratch like his bandsaw and so many others like the blower he made and again so many others. He sells the plans to his builds. From taking on a sponsor he then lost a significant amount of sales of his plans on how to build the tools. It’s not actually patreon he mentioned that he realizes it was like patreon because he feels a lot of his viewers buy his plans not because they need or want the plans but because Matthias doesn’t have a patreon as far as I know so the alternative way to support him on his channel is to purchase his plans. Whether or not he or anyone else that does it like Matthias did is running a sponsored video he is still providing excellent content full of information. Nothing in this world is free and if you are good at something why should you do it for free. I’ve learned a lot from Matthias and several other excellent creators and builders that willingly share there knowledge through RUclips. This kind of information wasn’t so readily available as it is now and the knowledge that is shared on RUclips grows every day. I personally cannot afford to give money to every RUclips creator but selfishly enjoy and learn from what information they willingly provide. If they can do it and do it sponsored, they deserve it. The amount of time hard work and patience it takes to put out these videos is more than just a full time job. I bust my ass everyday working for mine and I would never do it for free. Not one person can say they work for free so stop being hypocritical. It sucks that he lost on sales of his plans and it sucks that the sponsorship didn’t go well. I wish Matthias the best and I hope things turn back around for him and I hope that any possible future sponsorships work out the way they should and benefit him as they should. You think that posting your life or skills in any trade on a network such as RUclips is easy and nothing but pressing record I challenge you who are saying the stupid petty shit to do it yourself. Do it while working your day to day everyday to get by and do it for years because that’s usually how long it takes to get enough followers and views to make anything substantial enough to even think about being a RUclipsr full time. And if you fail you will realize that it is not just pressing record that it is hard work and clearly to much for you if you fail. If you succeed then you will also know how hard it is and you are not the person in the comments dogging the creators and you are not who this message is for. Sorry for the short story people I don’t normally comment at all or get into the bullshit that goes back and forth in the comments and I ain’t doing that now. I just think maybe some of the viewers that had thought negatively maybe because of what someone else had to say or even the people that had to say something negative that maybe I can open your mind to another point of view and maybe you can respect these creators for the knowledge and entertainment they share and you enjoy. Instead of looking down on a man for trying to work for his money through entertainment and teaching. You know the same thing teachers in school get paid for or teachers in trade schools or even entertainers on television and in movies. P.S. Love the videos Matthias, thanks for sharing.

    Sorry you had to experience that. I gotta admit that I've a bit of bug up my arse about DeWalt myself. Their stuff is nice but way over priced. I started my woodworking business with the cheapest of the cheap (ToolShop and Performax from Menards and Central Machinery from Harbor Freight) because it was all I could afford. I used all of the tricks to get going like turning a cheap circular saw into a table saw. As I made money, I bought better, but I still don't see myself buying DeWalt anytime soon. There's always something just as good that's cheaper. Performax has actually proven to be a pretty decent brand most of the time and I've so far never gone wrong with WEN as an upgrade. I'll take a WEN over a DeWalt any day and save ~20% to boot. I think the only DeWalt I have in my shop is some phillips driver bits someone else gave me. :)

    I know this is an older video, but it's always crazy how sponsorships work for content creators.
    You win some you lose some on BOTH fronts, and it sucks.
    The terms and conditions are always weird, or they try and pay you less, or you have to do weird videos, or stick to certain scripts or timings, etc.
    Then your viewers either call you a sellout for trying to "make it" and post annoying or even hateful things in your comments sections which just turns off other viewers, and like in your case, you get less merchandising sales, which can make up a LOT of your "youtube money."
    I've seen a fair number of youtubes get sponsors that don't really make much or any sense for their channel, and I've seen others get really good ones, and it seems almost a toss up which person makes it out okay with their sponsorship working or not.
    I've seen some woodworking or craftsmanship style channels that feel like they're literally selling products in every video, and they do amazing! All while other channels try and get a little sponsorship, only to lose out in the end for seemingly no reason.
    I guess it's probably how you develop your community? In your case you have SO MANY diy, best interest, best cost style videos, so your community is a bunch of people who want the best option for someone trying to diy, and not be "sold" something, whereas if your channel had always had the mentality of selling tools, products, sponsorships, testing tools, etc, you'd have made out like a bandit on the sponsorship with MORE sales from your affiliate links than you'd ever make without the "free" tools.
    I've seen this a lot in the gaming community where someone tries to play a sponsored game, get some money, feel like they're finally "really" getting paid for their passion, only to have people straight up unsubscribe and me incredibly rude, over something they could just not watch and wait for more content.

    If you see people are buying your plans as a way to support you and not because they want the plans then give up on the sponserships, if you think they make you look like a sellout, and join a service like Patreon or Maker Support.
    Let your customers support you directly, avoid the worry of being seen as a sellout, and you can have more contact/interaction with your viewers. You could even set up rewards for viewers who can support you at specific price levels - such as a private live stream Q&A every month for viewers who support $2 or more a month. Perhaps one week early access to videos you will later post on RUclips. A free building plan every month for $5 or more per month. What ever you think would be useful to your viewers.

    It is to easy for people to pick up on the Negatives of life.
    Positives. Are what should be the main focus.
    Meaning you started a RUclips Channel became popular enough that people kept watching. ( Subscriptions / Patreon )
    You got some free tools, not to bad ( you use them or not, unimportant ).
    You are commercial in your own self worth. ( $$$$ )
    Meaning you have a RUclips Channel and you make money. ( Patreon/ Adsense ).
    And you make money selling Plans of self build projects. ( $$$$ )
    Seems to many people forget how small they really are on the grand scale of things.
    Your a nice guy and you present well, but never look a gifted horse in the mouth as the saying goes be happy for any Positives that come your way.
    From a Negative point of view.
    Do not say or complain if things you do turn bad ( You Win Some You Lose Some )

    Start using Milwaukee tools, you'll never have to throw a tool as far as you can again. They also make a great cordless chainsaw.

    It's not that people think you don't need income, it's that when they see a sponsored video, they figure that you're no longer unbiased. Your reputation is built entirely on the fact that you make everything that you use, and when you purchase tools, they're either old or cheap. It drives animus from people when you take money in exchange for changing your message. I doubt anyone considered what your income is when they stopped buying plans. They thought you sold them out.
    Same thing with John. Your product is either your knowledge or your viewers. You're selling your knowledge, or, you're selling your viewers to dewalt. Your viewers retaliated because they became the product and not the customer.

    To hell with Dewalt! I wouldn’t say this if only one tool from them were faulty, but the last three batteries were complete garbage, the work lights base is completely cracked on 4 of the 5 lights, the drill has an odd angle to the head unit when drilling through wood (maybe a worn bushing) the chainsaws are unreliable... the list goes on with them, I would also understand this if the tools were 5 or even 10 years old but these are less than a year and were given as gifts! Dewalts even replaced the lights and battery packs but the replacements even broke! The plastic they’re using is just shitty, literally plain garbage! To brittle for any life expectancies to even exceed 6 months. DeWalt is only good for cheap tool presents that sit in a garage that doesn’t ever open the doors. Highly pissed about their junk. I’d buy Kobalt or Ryobi before Dewalt any day now that I’ve actually used their products.

    What made you do a video without their final approval before releasing it? What were you thinking? Violating your contract for any motive will not cause you to be rewarded. Then to hear you say that you even considered contacting DeWalt to ask them for another tool. Glad you came to your senses, and purchased your own tool. For those who are telling you , in so many words, that it is OK to violate a contract, may they remember this when a contract they have instituted is violated. I hope they are as generous when the shoe is on the other foot! Always remember, the bigger the company, shrewdness and one-upmanship are the keys of the day. The Legal Department is purely looking at the contractual aspect. DeWalt is BIG BUSINESS, and if you are going to seek sponsorship, then prepare yourself to understand how the BIG BOYS operate, so that the experience will be profitable for both you and the sponsor, and not just the sponsor. Put your thinking cap on and step up your game.

      They're not bad, but they are for the price. Dewalt is falling behind in price-to-performance. That whole saying, "you're paying for the name" rings true with Dewalt, imo. I like Klein Tools and Milwaukee more these days. The only thing keeping Dewalt alive are construction cults and they're all going to die from Chromium-6 cancers in a few years, making those of us with brains, the only builders left.

    • @MaxMakerChannel

      James Biggar I never got approached for any sponsorship. Especially not the major brands. I asked Dewalt, Bosch, Milwaukee, Triton and Ryobi. They wouldn’t even sponsor a single drill. So I gave up on them. I don’t get it though. If I was them, I would send every damn RUclipsr my stuff for free, just so that it is out there. A 100$ drill costs them maybe 30$, so if only one viewer buys their products in the future it would be worth it for them.

    You're probably my oldest subscription in YT and one of the things I like most about you, is not being bound by sponsored scripts.
    I stopped watching all YT channels that started going from their own ideas, to promoting equipment. If I want to watch a commercial, I have TV and all relevant websites.
    So, although I'm odd by nature and not the best example, maybe, a lot more people think the same way...

      Jose Silveira, I'm like you and we both may be odd if it's odd to not want to watch commercials on YT. I used to religiously watch Laney Shaughnessy until he got in with a CNC company and started pushing their products. Just looked at his website and it doesn't look like it's been updated since 2014 as it's still listing the Wirligig Wars from that year.

      Just fucking avoid the hassle, go the AvE route and sink or swim based on your own merit. I'm not here to watch commercials for beds, tools, learning programs, Ford, Chevy, games or whatever else the advertisers want to burn into my limited brain space. I'm here for your content, I thumb up, subscribe and comment if I like something. Which is nearly every video you produce. Not this one, this is just bitching about failing to account for timing, cost and repercussions. Nice teaser about throwing a chainsaw... Just post that video and don't use shitty slow-mo or reenactments.

    • @Synthmilk
      @Synthmilk 6 лет назад +1

      Jon Anderson so you just want free content as if your entitled to it, gotcha. And heaven forbid a creator put up a video you don't want to watch, on their god damn advice channel. Fuck off, you're not of any value to the channel, and "sinking and swimming based on your own merit" includes being popular enough to get sponsored you ass. The AvE rout? Ah yes, have a great paying regular job that covers most of the expenses with horrid production quality and minimal time investment, totally something that EVERYONE can do. You do know that he ran ads on his vids, and the reason he started a paetron was because the ad revenue dried up? What the fuck do you think an ad is? It's sponsorship you moron. Oooo, you thumb up subscribe and comment, how much money and from where does that provide a creator? Fuck all, that's what.
      I bet you don't tip at restaurants either, cause the servers should "sink or swim based on their own merit" eh?

    • @badw01f23
      @badw01f23 6 лет назад

      idk why you would do that. Most if not all RUclipsrs that i see still do what they want and how they want it, they just mention the product theyre using. Even channels like Colin Furze, or the sling shot channel that do make specific things for sponsors, they always build something great and with their own flair. Colin makes giant robots and Jorge makes sweet Viking shields and weapons powered by rubber and air. Don't stop supporting someone for talking sponsors if they still make great content. They're just trying to make a living like the rest of us.

      Yes. I would never take money to promote or review a product with bias towards one manufacturer. I would only tell it like how I think it is. I have never worked in sales with commission and never would, and I never have anything to do with or want to be spoken to by salesman who are on commission. I will fend for myself. Just tell me where to find the products and I will only ask facts in that case, not opinion.

      RetroWeld I don't really understand the issue with using the DeWalt tools just because he's no longer sponsoring them and he may be a little bit salty he still allowed to use them right? Or are they now taking channels away if people use copyrighted products? All good points. It's one of those ethical dilemmas we explore in college and something we all face in life. I have rolled the problem around and around and here is my reasoning if your interested. (This mostly applies to HowTo, DIY channels (like mine) and others). We spend our whole life being overloaded by adds paid endorsements or "Unpaid Endorsements" product placement in movies, people trying to sell us the next greatest thing since sliced bread. It's just business, I understand it. One of the nice things about YT is the everyday people that share their passion, knowledge, skills and insight. Most don't make money, some make a little, a few are fairly successful. They come across as a trusted friend, someone we respect, someone we would have over to grill steaks and have a beer. These are the type of people I want to be associated with. When you see me using a tool or some piece of equipment you know I like it and it's worthy of my hard earned $. Anyway that my perspective. Later.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 6 лет назад +1

      It's a deal. Just draft up a set of terms and send them back to any company that gets in touch. They either agree or they don't.
      As far as ads, I think one of the biggest things is integrity: there are youtubers who, if they have sponsored content, I will pay attention, because I know they're not the kind of people that would hawk crap for a quick buck. If they can promote something they genuinely like, and make some cash doing it, I'm happy for them, even. I want people I like to succeed. Sure, some people will still get upset, but they're morons, and you don't want to capitulate to morons. At least, I don't.

    • @SouthernEngineering
      @SouthernEngineering 6 лет назад

      Also good points, something to consider. I follow several YT people, like April Wilson, she has a huge Sub base and I genuinely enjoy her progress even though her videos are full of product placement; Perhaps I'll face those choices in the future but for now I'll buy my own stuff and I hope people that watch me will appreciate my choice's and trust my content in genuine.
      Later..
