I agree with Kiz027. Just keep doing what you're doing for the pure fun of it. If people feel they have to put in their critical comments ( two cents worth) then screw them.
I don't think about what brand they are using, unless it is a sponsored video. Even then, I know I have a chance to maybe make that product with the brands of tools that I have, just the same.
I don’t paint dewalt any more out of respect bc I’ve gotten lots of “work” from them...But if the video is not sponsored I use a mix of brands and most people understand when they see other colors on the tools
It didn't really matter that you painted them, most of us who were curious figured out what they were anyway.... Besides, I didn't really think it was about hiding a brand, more about making sure your brand was front & center. Probably not needed anymore given your massive success, but it was sensible and clever at the time. It probably contributed to building the Diresta brand.
Thank you for commenting on this jimmy, I was really curious what you have to say on this. Glad you aren't anti-DeWalt or other brands, that would be beneath you and any other self-respecting youtuber.
I understand the point of painting the tools a different color. It makes it clear that it isn't a product placement, so don't waste your time going down the rabbit hole or making assumptions. I personally don't care even if it is a product placement. People need money, so if a company wants to pay them to use tools that work who cares? Two birds with one stone. People are weird though, especially about 'deceptive' corporate practices, although I don't find product placement deceptive at all. 'Paid reviews' are a different topic people should not confuse with product placement, but it seems like they do under some 'slippery slope' logical fallacy. I mean, come on, who is really going to buy a brand simply because their favorite youtuber uses that brand? That is more of a character flaw on the imitator than the imitatee. HOWEVER, if the tool is unusable garbage that you pretend you actually use on camera, THAT would be deception. I don't think that is happening, so who cares.
Bas Apon He did not deal directly with Dewalt, that’s his point. It was through an ad agency who handles everything except for the final sign off. I’ve had a similar experience with sponsored content.
I donate to two wood turners via Patreon and I don't see these as handouts. One of them has taught me so much down through the years that I feel obliged to give something in return. The other is a beginner who is struggling to make his mark so I'm just trying to help him on his way.
Patreon isn’t centered around one-time donations (that would feel like a handout, agreed) it acts as magazine subscription but to any creator who is on the platform. The same people who buy the plans mostly as a way of saying thanks would likely sign up for Wandell’s Weekly so to speak. Though to be sure Patreon at first glance cuts against the grain of the independent Canadian character. Point of clarification: diresta spray painted all his tools, not just the dewalt ones, from the start of his channel. He did a Q&A and said he had no animosity toward any manufacturer but he also didn’t have so much good will that he wanted to advertise for them for free on what is essential his show about his work. As time went on he would get some tools for a sponsorship use them in the video and then a few weeks later they would be painted too. I would imagine he gets paid well to endorse them since if he uses another brand in conjunction with dewalt during a build the other brand is whited out. Regardless, instead of buying drill after drill to avoid doing incidental dewalt advertising you should just paint them Matthias green and be done with it. Then you don’t have to second guess what tool you’re using when to avoid the appearance of endorsement. Just some stray thoughts. Thanks for sharing everything that you do. It’s a great benefit to us all.
I think what shows here is that Matthias is a generally decent person using creativity to earn some money while trying to avoid stepping on any toes. I respect that.
Reconsider Patreon. I have watched all your videos, I think. But I will never buy your plans -> I'm not a woodworker, I have no shop, my only saws are a hand crosscut saw and a 6" hacksaw. But I have enjoyed learning about glue, I love your marble machines, the apple gringer was amazing, the pipe organ was cool, the engineering details on wood gears has been fascinating, and you've given a freaking masterclass on how different tools work. I could gush on and on. I can''t be a common audience member type. But just being on Patreon gives people an opportunity to demonstrate a thank you. Don't think of it as "asking for handouts". Think of it as "giving people an opportunity to say thanks". Oh, er, by the way: Thank you for making these videos! I love them and tell anyone and everyone how cool they are.
Patreon isn’t a handout, it’s a way for us to say “thank you for the work you do, and here’s some cash to help pay the bills so that you can do more of this for us,.”
Patrion is not considered a hand out to many in the online community. It is a way people can support the creators they like and the videos they like. Personally I think you are the only one who makes your kind of video on RUclips. This is a good thing, I and I’d assume many others would be happy to help support you and your family via something like patrion. Keep up the good work.
As long as you follow what's in your heart you're audience will go along for the ride. They trust you and they like your videos so if you did go to Patreon I think most would understand and not think of it as a handout. Just keep doing what you feel is the right thing because so far it's working for you!
I don't watch your videos for any recommendations, and I don't care what you use. I watch you for your ingenuity, originality and just plain intelligence. I like the way you go about making and fixing, and then I extrapolate your ideas into my projects. I don't care if you used a brown colored chocolate bar that was floating in a pool. Thanks
Patreon isn't a hand-out. It's a reflection of the value your videos represent to the community here. It allows you to do more for free, for everyone, and have to put up with fake recommendations or ads every 30 seconds.
As for Patreon, I think both you and John should reconsider that option. Many content creators, specifically makers, use patreon as a means to fund the content they produce. So those that can and do want to be a supporter can. They are purchasing the content of your videos. If that still feels too much like asking for a handout, create different reward levels. If they contribute $ / month or video they get access to a patreon only video feed. Or a different level gets them access to a plan of their choice.
I get the impression Matthias thinks using Patreon would hurt the "good will" purchases of his plans. That's certainly a real possibility based on his experience of a drop in plan sales after the sponsored video.
btdga I think that too. He does a lot of work making plans. I believe he's worried it wouldn't have a valid reason to make plans if even less people bought them--then his whole reason for making videos could be tarnished.
There's nothing wrong with Patreon, but bottom line he says he doesn't need it. You can't really ask for money if you don't have a legitimate need and he seems to be doing fine making content as it is. He's not looking to expand operations because he's it. Pretty soon a person isn't making the content they want, they're making it to maintain donations and now there's so much competition for those dollars, and there's a perception out there that there's a certain amount of entitlement involved with Patreon, and when the party's over the community suffers as a whole, sometimes you're chances of survival are better off growing organically long term and finding a niche, which is basically what he's spelling out.
Patreon is 100% voluntary. No one really knows how much you're getting from patreon. I was going to contribute to you via patreon but now I know why I couldn't find it. I think it would be a very good idea for you to accept patreon. Being funded by artificial plans sales is rather awkward.
Patreon is not a hand out. They are your biggest fans that love what you are doing and are willing to pay for your content. I have cancelled all my network TV and pretty much allocate that money to Patreon.
What does it really matter. You do a project, you have a tool, the job gets done, end of story. It doesn't matter if its Makita, Ryobi, Craftsman as long as the job gets finished.
Techni World i have ryobi, dewalt, hitachi and more generic drills, and my hitachi corded or cordless are my most used. I feel they are solid products.
People see animosity....thats why reality TV works. Brilliant observation. Always wondered what the attraction was but never put that much thought into it.
Only some people Matthias. Some people are axe murders, some people are ...not nice. Don’t worry about what SOME PEOPLE think. We know what you mean, and that’s what is important.
I had intended on putting a logo on my second bandsaw, but couldn't come up with anything satisfying. As it is, the colour and the 45 degree corners are the very recognizable fature, because commercial bandsaws are always square or round.
yeah, you can get pretty loaded on a Wandel "Here' game,, BUT,, I defy you to walk straight after a Matthew Cremona 'Chuckle &/or Giggle' game! You be passing out before the end of that vid
I support Diresta on patreon and never thought twice about it. I wouldn’t even consider myself a maker. If anything, a novice tinkerer...but I support because his videos are always at the top of my list, as are Matthias’ videos if they involve actually building something. Thing is, I feel like Matthias only builds when he needs something, so it’s a practicality thing whereas Jimmy has clients he builds for. If starting a patreon gets Matthias building more, I’d gladly support with no second thought on his integrity.
Sadly it seems the general public thrives on drama. I personally avoid it at all costs, but too often people seek it out and it appears you're experiencing it.
Because of this video I bought plans from you for the first time (router lift, dove tail, box joint, and dust collector). I've been a fan for a few years so I'ts about time I showed my support. Thanks for all the great content and God bless you and your family.
Patreon is not about what you need. It is about people valuing what you did. And how people value you should be up to them. Now asking for money when you don't need it would be dishonest, but there is no shame in having a tip-jar. Even if it buys you a nice pair of new shoes, a family holiday or a better education for the little one, it just means people appreciate what you do, and they had a buck to spare!
2 things I learned: The tiny 12V drills like the orange one at the end are most useful most of the time because they are just lightweight. And those hammer drill functions in cordless drills are pretty useless unless you have no mains power at your place of work.
The (perceived) animosity is why I never watched all of the Shop visit movies and the thing I personally don't enjoy much (you are both awesome in your own respective ways), although you are right, there is a large population chunk that have a dormant belligerent gene just waiting to unleash that seem to enjoy animosity. What I've always loved about your respective RUclips offerings is 1. the use of tools (I'm an okay woodworker now as a result but usually a graphic designer) and 2. the cleverness and "problem-solving hat" you both wear. That's pure inspiration to me and largely why I'm here. Re Jimmy and Patreon. Some use patreon for hand outs and support but Jimmy has cleverly created a product that he sells there and uses it as a platform to sell that product. It's a fair exchange. When he does talky videos (vlogs aside) such as his tips videos, Direstas Cut or the Rockler ones, I learn way less than when he does stuff at 90MPH with no voice over and because of this, would consider subscribing on Patreon. Whereas You Guys have videos that support and promote plan sales moreso. Different business model.
It sucks to see youtube going the way of tv. Nobody can just use a product. Everything has to be a ad placement or sponsorship. So dumb and frustrating
Matthias, I don't look at Patreon as a hand out. It's just a way for people to show appreciation for content they receive. I honestly have very little time to do any sort of woodworking anymore but I greatly enjoy watching your video, kind of living variously through you. I know the work in front of the camera and behind the camera takes a tremendous amount of time. It would be nice to have a way to show appreciation for all that work.
Actualizing most of us give a f***, or we just want to collect ideas how things can be done, and then do it ourself, maybe completely different or in most cases never. It is just funny to look at somebody doing the work. Nobody wants to hold your hand in your darkest hours. As Schwarzenegger said to a friend: "I give a damn what you want to do, I'm only interested in what you accomplish". And THIS is what makes your plans go sell: Ideas that came to reality!
I don't watch your videos for tool suggestions or preference. You and John are by far my favorite you tubers.Unless you suggest a tool for a specific reason, I don't care what you use. I watch you for your technique and innovative ideas (you're very helpful in motivating me to try new things). Thank you for all you do, and I wouldn't worry so much about tool selection, as long as it gets the job done.
Dewalt sent you some FREE tools, I say take them and if they're good say so. IF not say that too, I prefer Dewalt but I try and get what ever tools I can on a Budget
1:45 Great Neck Tools is based out of Mineola, NY 11501. I've been to the warehouse, all their manufacturing is in China. Basically disposable tools you find at the auto part store to fix something quick.
I've actually never really understood your animosity toward any kind of sponsoring. All your subscribers are following you because of your skills as one of the first engineer woodworker on youtube and also because of your geeky grumpy critical personality. So I think that accepting a sponsorship or a patreon won't make you a sold out because it's your community that will benefit from it. Who cares if you got tools for free you deserve it. I would definitely give you 5$ on Patreon if it allows you to buy better video equipments and a real full sheet of plywood so you can make your video without recycling garbage. Just take the opportunities Mathias, feed your family and blow our minds !
Yours and Johns channels are at the top of my watch list and thats simply because you guys think outside the box. Keep it interesting and I'll keep coming back. Tools are only as good as the person using them and you guys are constantly reminding the rest of us that fact. Good health always to you and your family.
Ignore the wankers, some people have too much time on their hands, they'd be better off watching porn to keep them busy :) :) As for DeWalt, I felt that it just happened to be them, it could just as easily been another brand you got involved with
Pudsey Bear only if it's a good brand, that people have brand loyalty for. Nobody cares about the Canadian Tire sponsorship, since it was a crap jobsite saw, and other items that haven't been useful (or at least recognizable) in future projects.
Fetid Tuna Dewalt at the moment are better and cheaper than makita, I have always been a makita fan boy but recently switched to Dewalt . A few years ago I wouldn't have even considered it due to a really shit chop saw we had in work that was no where near as good as th 20 year old makita it replaced but the current stuff is great .
What I really like about that particular Hitachi drill (we have a couple at work) it fits the hand really well and has a great speed range. If you spend several hours per day with a drill in your hand, you appreciate things like weight and ergonomics.
Everyone has a preferred brand, In truth, it normally starts with a great deal on 1 or 2 items with a battery, or two. Then do you purchase a new tool for x amount with y amount for a battery or just purchase the new tool safe in the knowledge that the battery or batteries you have fit. Mine started with a great deal on a missionary drill, driver and impact driver all in one, it was a great deal, from that day on I purchase the same brand, I know the batteries fit, and at around £30 to £90 or around $45 to $100 for a battery, I stay with that brand as I have the battery, yes I have needed to replace the battery, but I have all the tools now, so I have to purchase battery to fit the tool, its a catch 22. But a one all battery fits all tools is a great way. Just my 2 pence or 2 cents worth and in truth its not worth that.
Not everyone has a preferred brand. I have DeWalt, Bosch, Porter-Cable and Makita in my shop, plus a few oddballs like Milwaukee, Grizzly, Ridgid, and Port-a-Mate. If you count "small equipment" you can include Delta and Jet also. I buy the best tool for the money at the time without regards to brand. Within tool classes I have preferred brands. I have a couple of Bosch Colt trim routers and find they don't hold the bit exactly square to the base and tend to lose the height setting over time. I switched to DeWalt trim routers and have no problems with them. However, I have a Bosch random orbit sander that I love and wouldn't trade for a dozen DeWalt sanders. I don't have a lot of experience with other brands of belt sanders, but have two Makita that I like so well I doubt I'll ever try another brand. I use Porter-Cable 3.25 HP routers in my table and my CNC because they're designed for that type of application.
I take all your saying on board, yes I have other brands, but there plug into the wall brands, all my battery powered tools are the same brand, but that is my point if it's plugged into the wall no problem. I think you confused my original post, yes its good to have different make's different makes make different tools better, but once you go down a battery line, your pretty stuck. Chop saw is Jet. Piller drill is Einhell. Table saw is Hitachi. Bandsaw is Fox. Grinder 240v is bosch and a still petrol one. I could give full details for all my power tools, but plug-in ones are plug-in ones and it does, no matter what make you get, Battery powered are totally different my friend, unless you have 4 to 5 different batteries and chargers. You will have different brands, but in most cases, you only have one brand for battery power. Unless you like lots of different batteries and different chargers, then finding the battery you need is flat, I will happily stick with one make, I know the battery will fit, and one of the batteries will have charge, until I get a second one charged for the job.
Yes that's how I purchase too, start with a quality cordless brand and research before purchasing any tool as even brand names have dud's - wait for the next release.
Most strongly colored tools are very branded Green = Hitachi (soon to be Metabo HPT), Darker green = bosch diy, and some Metabo Neon green + black = GREX Lime green = Ryobi black + neon green = Festool, ROCKWELL teal blue = Makita, Boschs professional, some Metabo stuff cobalt blue + chrome or black = Kobalt red = Milwaukee, Skil yellow+black = DeWalt or Wagner Black = würth, Craftsman (which is now controlled by Stanley Black & Decker), Husky Orange+black = RIDGID, Triton, Fein, Black & Decker, GROZ equipment too Tan+black = Jet blue +white = RIKON burnt yellow = POWERMATIC
To me, green is both Bosch consumer line and Metabo. Although in both cases a darker green than Hitachi. Also Blue for Boschs professional tools and some Metabo stuff.
Hitachi is owned by Metabo and is going under rebranding to Metabo HPT hard to say what the future color is going to be... Bosch stuff is a good additions, Thanks Benjamin Lorrig
3:02 looks like the harbor freight li-Ion 11.1v Series. Take that pack next time you go to power fist shop and see what it fits, I've seen many that share packs across Chinese lines with 0 or very minimal modification
I'm sure it must be really hard to shrug off the negative comments and trolls trying to stir the pot, but hang in there and keep doing what you're doing.
You are very correct about the animosity nastiness stuff, very unkool. I appreciate your integrity and position re sponsors and such. I have been watching your site closely now for about six years and you are one very helpful and insightful good guy. On ya Matthias.
Thanks for taking the time to clarify . I didn’t think you were upset with the brand rather than the experience but best to address any confusion as quickly as possible. As for patreon I would think of it as an diversification so you’re not at risk of sudden changes.
I LOVE Dewalt and was very loyal and almost exclusively used their power tools until I got hardcore into woodworking. Now my garage has Rigid, Bosch and even a Riyobi now. I decided I’d evaluate each individual tool need and test the best ones then pick which one worked best for ME! I’ve been down the sponsorship road before and often used something that was either subpar or not exactly what I wanted. I always compromised in the end to get something for free or to make a few extra dollars off the deal. NEVER again. I’ll stick to using and buying what I want and need. I’m glad you made both videos and showed TONS of class in both. It didn’t seem like you were knocking Dewalt or the company who made the deal with you. It brings awareness to people who don’t understand how sponsorships work and how they often don’t work out in the end the way you’d expect. People hear sponsorship and think everything is free and you are automatically getting fat checks in the mail. I like it when you see sponsored products in videos and you almost didn’t even realize they were there or you were being advertised to. The people who overly sell brands and products usually frustrate me, especially when I love their videos prior to that. Get on Patreon and feel good about it. Not everyone wants or needs plans but sometime your videos might help someone big time with their project or you might teach someone some new skill and they just want a quick and easy way to say thanks. Anyone who disagrees can make their own channel and do their own thing instead of complaining on yours... keep up the great work 👍🏼👍🏼
Diresta paints the tools that are not sponsored tools. He makes sure that nobody gets advertized for free. So if you see a tool with the brand still there, you can be sure it is a sponsored tool in some way.
Actually Jimmy commented right above you and gave his reason why he doesn't paint DeWalt tools. I still think he should paint his tools though. Because he is Diresta.
You think people like animosity. You can see it in everything we make, movies, tv, books. Fighting, murder, cheating, war, we love it all. People actually tricked themselves into believing wrestling is real just for the thrill.
Ten years ago Home Depot use to have Dewalt section with their own representatives. The east coast sale manager ask me to help them build a demo station where they can demonstrate their tools such as drills, impact driver, sawzall and sds hammer drill. He promise to give me 500.00 or a five piece cordless tool set which is the same price. After building the station and he compliment how well it was and that the customer love the station and it help increase their sales. He give me two Dewalt tee shirts and told me to come next week on a certain day at 1:00 pm. I went that day he never show up, since it was a Home Depot I frequent I saw him few times and he would always say I'm working on it. After a month gone by I finally told him that he was a piece of shit and that he probably took the money or the tool set but he said it was Dewalt's fault. This was the Home Depot in Flushing New York. Since then I refuse to work with any of these companies
I watch your videos because of your knowledge and I’m learning a lot. I don’t pay attention to brands because most big brands make almost the same tools anyways, what really matters is how you use those tools and this is where you come in: your own ideas and skills, that’s why I’m a viewer. Keep up the good work!
patreon doesn't have to be a handout, it allows for optional premium content that supplements the channel, and it's a great way to invest in the communities that operate so much free entertainment.
Unless you do it the way everyone does it publishing videos weeks if not months later or even plain locking the video for the normal viewers. Yeah, that's an amazing idea, just like console exclusives
I am a woodworker and an avid watcher of your youtube channel. I have never built anything you have shown on your channel. I like your channel not because of the specific content or project but because your channel is entertaining and inspiring. This makes it art and patrons take care of artists who make the world a better place. Patreon does make sense in my opinion.
I would love to understand why certain folks care which tools you are using....its the teaching, and content that is important regardless of what brand tool you use. Keep up the great work!!!!
You actually don't need to explain why you are using whatever brand. Just keep doing what you are doing and just ignore brand related comments -- who really cares if you are using an Harbor Freight or a Festool drill? You are making a living out of these vids and plans and you don't owe anyone to explain your brand of choice. Unfortunately, most of the time, folks just find something to complain about so they can post something.
Drama sells. Scripted-so-called-Reality-TV shows that it does. But it doesn't sell as well as sex. Add some attractive ladies to the show and watch it really sell...
Rakesh Bhansali no he isn't... he suggests instead of Patreon or Drama/"Animosity" to include more nudity... a valid suggestion, maybe not one that Matthias will pick up, tho... it does make it interesting, tho, if - when it does come down to those two - Matthias will choose nudity over Patreon... ;-)
I wouldn't say patreon is a handout. You are supposed to provide some sort of value to patrons that nonpatrons dont get. But I would say regardless viewers want a way to support you because they want to. People buy tshirts and do dads of people they want to support simply because they want to support them.
Your attitude for Patreon is flawed. I love watching your videos and would gladly give you $2 a month and so would another 1000 people. I don't have time to buy plans and build stuff right now but I want to support you. I think there are a lot of other people that feel the same way as me. I have purchased plans in the past and they are excellent.
Honestly, a lot of people on the internet are just here to complain about things they don't care about. Shit stirrers to put it mildly. Honestly, who cares which tools you use? Personally I watch your channels, because you're both inspirational in terms of filming and your work, not because I have some incessant need to masturbate to the "proper" brand of tool. If a DeWalt angle grinder does the job you want done, then that's the tool for the job. If a $5 Chinese knock off electric screw driver does the job, nobody cares or screams foul. The only "issue" I might have with sponsored content, is when it's obvious that you're only doing it for the money, and even then if it ends up being an interesting or fun video, fuck it. I'm paying exactly $0.00 for the entertainment, and at worst I'm getting exactly what that's worth. As other channels have discovered, once you go with some kind of patreon-like offering, you'll tailor your videos to what the paying customer wants, and the rest of us will simply have to "suffice" with whatever that ends up being. That's perfectly fine with me - I paid nothing for my entertainment, so that's exactly what my viewership is worth. Sure, people will argue that watching the video is worth something due to ads etc., but on a hugely popular channel with own sponsors etc., that one view might be worth about $0.0001 (that's 0.01 cent) - my impact is insignificant to any kind of patreon-like support. As for not wanting to advertise brands, I do get that, but anyone who knows tractors will instantly recognize that brand, anyone who uses spray paint will recognize what you used there etc. Going out of your way to hide brands is a stupid waste of time - UNLESS you start making a habit out of making videos with crappy project results where you highlight brands in an attempt at blackmailing them into paying you to cover it up. I've never noticed either of you saying things like "I'm going to cut this on my DeWalt table saw" or "I'll be using my Bosh drill press" or anything like that (except maybe during your sponsored content), and as long as you don't do that, I don't see a reason to hide your choice of tools and tool brands. To me it seems like a massive waste of time and effort to try to please a mix of trolls and corporate fanboys who feel the need to vindicate themselves by asserting that whatever brand they happened to buy into is "the best".
I don't understand people who get hung up on the tools. I guess they think the tool makes the project, rather than the maker but I'd rather watch a project video unfold from concept to realisation, even if it's a "failure" for the project itself than for the tools. But you're right animosity is very attractive for some odd reason, that's unfortunate, the world is a much better place when we can all respect and learn from each other even if we don't always like one another.
rutger houtdijk In many countries that's not legal. I had my eyes opened when going to the USA and seeing their adverts. I couldn't watch more than a few mins of TV before turning it off.
Pixel spraying the tools green was a great intro - no mess or masking required. Great hack too! Your channel is a brand of sorts - can watch many channels but if you place value with one then you are more likely to believe it and return to it. Bosch makes money from their green and blue tool ranges which also helps the buyer to either get ripped off or buy appropriately. Black and Decker also wanted to promote a better range of tools but struggled with potential buyers seeing through it which is why they reused an existing brand in combination with the yellow to market another level of tools as DeWalt - their own brand was well known but associated with consumer products not to be taken too seriously by folks who want it for work. I don’t (currently) own any DeWalt tools but have been given some old screwdriver bits in a yellow box so thinking of routing off the logo just to be safe.
That would be rather ... brittle. A FDM printer wouldn't have the precision, nor would it have the strength of say fiber filled plastic. Also a lot of the plastic housings in tools are double shot with a hard plastic (frequently fiber filled for reinforcement) along with a softer rubber like plastic for grip and comfort. Can't do that yes with 3D printers.
Michael, I think it's a good idea. John, if you really need to drop it from a 3 story building, how about polycarbonate? Another idea might be to shrink-wrap it.
So few people own there mistake. Thank you for being one of the good ones who don't just try to blame others with things don't go well. You are awesome!
People are very quick to adopt group identities. This works very well for tool companies that want people to buy into their brands. "I only buy DeWalt tools, the other brands are shit.." In reality they are all good and bad. It's best to look for reviews on the particular tool you want to buy and trust those. Not much point in spending $600 dollars on a drill like I did though as it's almost certain not to last twice as long as a $300 one. Recently I've been buying AEG because of their long warranties compared to other big names.
I've just s subscribed because i was recommended by the type of vids i watch (AvE etc..) As I've just noticed all your tools receive that awesome custom Orange and Green! I really like that paint scheme! All the best from Wales, UK.
Lol. I have the exact same drill as the orange one. It's good enough, though there are some times that the speed selector slips a bit, making the drill struggle like it's under a lot of stress.
For our best interests to be served we need to not favor any one manufacturer and so increase competitive pressure. Having tools from different manufacturers is a good thing while having a tool with body and battery from different manufacturers is a fantastic thing! Every time a channel like Matthias's descends into sponsorship for a particular manufacturer, our interests are diminished, so we, as the beneficiaries of work such as Matthias's should wake up and start directly supporting such work in any way we can.
Have you considered going to Patreon and making your plans available to patrons only? Honestly, even without providing plans I would suggest reconsidering Patreon. You are providing informational content and entertainment. That is valuable in itself.
Love the honesty! I also didn't perceive it as having a go at DeWalt. I'd have no issue at all seeing you using their tools either - now excuse me while I go buy some plans!
You’re not the only one there’s are the woodworking RUclips or’s but I follow I have had the same problem recently with Dewalt. Keep on doing what you’re doing I enjoy your channel
I think there is a very large number of your fans who never notice this kind of stuff, and just genuinely enjoy your videos.
I agree with Kiz027. Just keep doing what you're doing for the pure fun of it. If people feel they have to put in their critical comments ( two cents worth) then screw them.
Yup. Whenever possible, I skip the ads
Paint and stencil the tools. You owe it to your fans!
I also assumed that it was an anti-theft measure. Can't say you bought it at the store if it's painted with another guy's name on it.
People hear what they want. You were very clear on what happened with your sponsored vids.
embeaston I 100% agree with you, Matthias did say in his video he didn’t play by Dewalt’s rules.
I found the commentary to be very fair and balanced. As always i was impressed by the honesty. And there is a lot of yellow in my shop.
I think people don't like how DeWalt dealt with Matthias, regardless who was at fault.
Dewalt didn't deal with Matthias.....it was an ad agency.
I personally love Dewalt. But I'd never get mad at you for being honest with us about your experiences. Thanks for being open and honest with us bro.
Matthias green should be a crayola color
You know you can buy his plans to support him even though you can't build anything from the plans. Matt has told that viewers does that too.
I like seeing the you tube community support each other! ☺
Make Something i
I think the quote is "love with your heart and use your brain for everything else"
Now it's time to make a wooden drill.
Or just pick up and fix up old braces.
from a motor I found ...
Yamamoto kkkkkk
Ahahahah
Bryan Steffen John has Patreon
Fetid Tuna. Agreed. I had a bunch I got for Christmas once. Barely used them and they were junk in 2 years.
Because this isn't about "getting a job done"...it's about making money on youtube and sponsorships.
You're a very honest guy :)
At least the Hitachi has the right colour for tools!
Matt, at least your bandsaws aren't branded. :)
I had intended on putting a logo on my second bandsaw, but couldn't come up with anything satisfying. As it is, the colour and the 45 degree corners are the very recognizable fature, because commercial bandsaws are always square or round.
You could "steal" Steve Ramsey's logo for Wood Working for Mere Mortals and rework it a little for Matthias Wandel's Wonderful Machines.
But they are, they are clearly Wandels
What are you talking about? There is no mistaking that Wandel green...
The overall design is pretty distinctive, and the color just hammers it home.
Matthias has such potent green paint it colours the floor behind him as well.
I admire the fact that you try to be as self-supported as you can so you can keep your creative freedom at 100%.
new drinking game. take a drink every time Matthias says Animosity!
Gordon Aitchison you tend to become an alcoholic :)
Here and here, then here and also here,,,,
Damn, you stole my comment!
yeah, you can get pretty loaded on a Wandel "Here' game,,
BUT,,
I defy you to walk straight after a Matthew Cremona 'Chuckle &/or Giggle' game!
You be passing out before the end of that vid
i;m doone...
What is it you’re doing now?! Stirring the pot, that’s what! Worst kind of drama queen.
You think Matthias is "stirring the pot" with this video?
Because of this video I bought plans from you for the first time (router lift, dove tail, box joint, and dust collector). I've been a fan for a few years so I'ts about time I showed my support. Thanks for all the great content and God bless you and your family.
Patreon is not about what you need. It is about people valuing what you did. And how people value you should be up to them. Now asking for money when you don't need it would be dishonest, but there is no shame in having a tip-jar. Even if it buys you a nice pair of new shoes, a family holiday or a better education for the little one, it just means people appreciate what you do, and they had a buck to spare!
That orange China drill looks like it would accept the 12v milwaukee batteries. Something to check into. Anyway, thanks for your honesty in all this.
How dare you trash-talk animosity! What has animosity ever done to you!?
She used to run around the town with Charity after her falling out with Chastity.
Lolol.. Thanks for the real lol.
2 things I learned: The tiny 12V drills like the orange one at the end are most useful most of the time because they are just lightweight. And those hammer drill functions in cordless drills are pretty useless unless you have no mains power at your place of work.
Forget the projects, I like Matthias's approach on things, whatever they are.
Keep with the plans, love your commitment to not asking for hand outs. Consistently good content and great tool designs it’s a win win!!
Not one drill found in a dumpster??? 🤔😂👍🏻
sadly, none.
Try the goodwill. I see a few time to time for $5 -$10.
Build one, lol.
Yes, I've bought some really nice Milwaukee tools at second hand stores - of course they aren't free.
No garage sale drills with dead batteries?
I've got a Dewalt drill/driver, jig saw, recip saw, planer and jobsite table saw. I've been very happy with all of them.
I don't use plans to build things, but I do enjoy your videos. I'd gladly drop you a buck or two for the entertainment value.
Ignore the wankers, some people have too much time on their hands, they'd be better off watching porn to keep them busy :) :)
As for DeWalt, I felt that it just happened to be them, it could just as easily been another brand you got involved with
Pudsey Bear only if it's a good brand, that people have brand loyalty for.
Fetid Tuna What is the health care plan like working at makita?
Your approach is so calm and common-sense that it's refreshing. Thank you!
Most strongly colored tools are very branded
Green = Hitachi (soon to be Metabo HPT),
Darker green = bosch diy, and some Metabo
Neon green + black = GREX
Lime green = Ryobi
black + neon green = Festool, ROCKWELL
teal blue = Makita, Boschs professional, some Metabo stuff
cobalt blue + chrome or black = Kobalt
red = Milwaukee, Skil
yellow+black = DeWalt or Wagner
Black = würth, Craftsman (which is now controlled by Stanley Black & Decker), Husky
Orange+black = RIDGID, Triton, Fein, Black & Decker, GROZ
equipment too
Tan+black = Jet
blue +white = RIKON
burnt yellow = POWERMATIC
Isn't orange pretty strongly associated with Triton nowadays?
Orange+black could also RIDGID
Good additions
orange black is also black and decker, green hitachi, green bosch diy, green metabo, orange fein. black würth
That closing statement...... *sizzling in the distance*
Thanks for taking the time to clarify . I didn’t think you were upset with the brand rather than the experience but best to address any confusion as quickly as possible. As for patreon I would think of it as an diversification so you’re not at risk of sudden changes.
I don’t understand the issue. Dewalt tools are high quality. You’ve got them. Why wouldn’t you use them?
Fetid Tuna they still make good tools though
Fetid Tuna you clearly didn't watch either of his videos on dewalt! Lol
MadModders That’s just good business
Yes. I was just clarifying because it seems some believe he paints them almost for the opposite reason.
Actually Jimmy commented right above you and gave his reason why he doesn't paint DeWalt tools. I still think he should paint his tools though. Because he is Diresta.
Paul Frederick yes well ”above” isn’t the same as earlier. His comment was posted several hours after mine. :)
I never said it was earlier. Simply that it was above. Which it was. That was so you could get it straight from the horse's mouth.
Mathias, I really like your channel and your insights. I watch you because you touch on many different things and you are honest and straight forward.
How about making a steam powered drill!
It doesn't HAVE TO be Patreon or RUclips. You can do both, at least, I'm not aware of any such restrictions at this time.
People gravitate toward negativity. Especially nowadays.
if it's fit for the job use it.. ..I use Makita because there commonly available in the UK and the 3ah batteries are cheap.
You're a class guy Wandel.
Jeremy Clarkson well that hasn't been my experience with it. Any system like that is abusable I suppose.
There are plenty of channels that do that.
GO ON PATREON ... we want your videos... and not YAP (yet another plan) :)
Second that. I would never have the time (or patience) to actually build any power tools, even if they are a cool shade of green!
Exactly, I agree entirely. Just ignore brands, and use what you use.
That circulate saw is a beast. Today I cut 4 12’ stair stringers with it. Brand new blade but she cut like a champ. Get a second battery
Drama sells. Scripted-so-called-Reality-TV shows that it does. But it doesn't sell as well as sex. Add some attractive ladies to the show and watch it really sell...
KSFWG but he just said he likes to live within his means and talent? Money is not everything???.. so where does attractive ladies come into picture?
I was talking about "reality tv shows" in general, and not Matthias' channel. Attractive ladies will draw more male viewers.
KSFWG you are totally off topic!
Rakesh Bhansali no he isn't... he suggests instead of Patreon or Drama/"Animosity" to include more nudity... a valid suggestion, maybe not one that Matthias will pick up, tho... it does make it interesting, tho, if - when it does come down to those two - Matthias will choose nudity over Patreon... ;-)
I never said or implied nudity. I said attractive. That is all.
I wouldn't say patreon is a handout. You are supposed to provide some sort of value to patrons that nonpatrons dont get. But I would say regardless viewers want a way to support you because they want to. People buy tshirts and do dads of people they want to support simply because they want to support them.
I'm so outraged that this video is about people being outraged!
Hi Mattie’s the third drill it calls power performance they use to sell it here in uk , made in chain .
Or you could just buy a set of plans every 10 months. Achieves literally the same thing but at least you get something in return.
the only time i notice a tool is seeing how you use it,..YOUR HANDS ARE THE BRAND!..keep-on-makin
I stopped buying dewalt since they started trash talking other brands in their ads
rutger houtdijk you might as well stop buying every tool brand then lol
What other brand attacks competing brands in their ads?
Good. All the more for me!
rutger houtdijk
In many countries that's not legal. I had my eyes opened when going to the USA and seeing their adverts. I couldn't watch more than a few mins of TV before turning it off.
Yeah well we're special. TV is pretty much crap anyways. So you're better off not watching it.
I don’t (currently) own any DeWalt tools but have been given some old screwdriver bits in a yellow box so thinking of routing off the logo just to be safe.
why don't you get a 3D printer and print your own tool shells and put the Dewalt guts into them.
James Lintell-Smith Ave fan I see
As long as he doesn't use a branded 3d printer
Michael, I think it's a good idea. John, if you really need to drop it from a 3 story building, how about polycarbonate? Another idea might be to shrink-wrap it.
So few people own there mistake. Thank you for being one of the good ones who don't just try to blame others with things don't go well. You are awesome!
Haters will hate, trolls is trolls, ignore them all, you can't please everyone, keep going on strong. Your loyal subscribers are with you.
Recently I've been buying AEG because of their long warranties compared to other big names.
not many things make me respect a person more than owning up to his/her mistakes.
Love the honesty regarding Patreon, that kind of attitude will get you far and in the end even more support.
👍 the lesson was worth a fortune. Spreading the word without animosity will help everyone make better decisions. Thanks
The grey drill's brand is Performance denoted by the hollow "P" logo (Though I steer clear as they are pretty crappy tbh)
I'm glad to hear honest commentary and it's a great lesson to other youtubers who seek to make money from sponsorship.
It shows a lot of honesty and integrity to openly accept responsibility for one's part in an experience that didn't go well.
You’re not the only one there’s are the woodworking RUclips or’s but I follow I have had the same problem recently with Dewalt. Keep on doing what you’re doing I enjoy your channel
