Suzuki SWIFT SPORT - fun or fraud?

  • This is the Suzuki Swift Sport. A Japanese hot hatch that comes with a 1.4 - litre turbo under the bonnet, pumping 129 hp. The Swift SPORT is now a mild hybrid, the small electric motor will give you that extra shove as you start and as you drive. But is it enough for the Suzuki Swift Sport to compete with the likes of the Fiesta ST?

As usual a brilliantly presented and edited review Anna. We can tell that there is a separate videographer on this one that allows some more creativity, less rostrum camera shots look to have made way for this. I'm happy either way. I've liked the Swift for a very long time and this model does not disappoint either. It's a little bit more grown up in some ways being a mild hybrid but looks to be just as much fun as ever. I love the old school dials, the manual gearbox and a proper hand break. Boot space is about OK but fill it full of shopping with the ingredients for a lovely evening meal and you take the twisty lanes home, when you arrive these ingredients could be already mixed. Put in the oven and enjoy. This really could be a time saving car. Many thanks for sharing.

Hi Anna. I remember those Suzuki Swifts from the early 90's. They were the must have vehicle for the small car class at the 12hr races at the Bathurst track. Those 12hr races were solely for production cars so no modifications other than for safety. Also the Suzuki Swift was sold by Holden and was the first Holden to be sold with a Barina badge.
The current Swift in my opinion is underrated. I know someone who has had two late models with no trouble to speak of. They are a good fun car and definitely they have their appeal especially as they get your seal of approval. But I have to ask what happened to you doing a 0-100 time?
    Thanks for sharing another video.
P.S I don't know about the Swift but with my Holden if I stall it I must wait 15 seconds to restart it otherwise all sorts of lights will come up on the dash.

That was absolutely brilliant review Anna. Another Suzuki video wow. The Suzuki Swift Sport is an awesome little hot hatch. Great exterior looks and a very nice but simple interior at a very affordable price. Love that yellow paint it makes the car pop out but I like them in a metallic blue. Yes it is a shame that they didn't put the exterior paint colour to the places that had the red accents, it's like that with all other colours Swift Sport. I know they are like Go Karts with the handling and shift very well indeed as my friend was looking at them at one time and was work for Suzuki at the time. I guess they had to put the hybrid to meet with government rules and regulations.
The same friend had the previous generation Swift and it had a 1.25L engine with 90 something BHP and it was quite nippy and he had it for a very long time but he was looking at the same generation Swift Sport but he was disappointed with it when he test drove one but the problem was it didn't have a service for a long time. But when my mate the test drove the generation that you drove here he love it but I think he prefer the one without the hybrid. At the I'm he couldn't fine one in the right price for him then he ended up buying a Jaguar EX R-Sport 2.0L petrol. So did he make the right choice?
Answer to you pin comment is I would go for for the Swift Sport but then again how about the i20N or the i30n.
Anna don't put yourself down. You are a very smart and witty lady that always seems to amaze me especially how you interact with so many people with in different languages.
Absolutely brilliant and very professional video and probably could be used on a TV show. I love the new style filming that you and your videographer do and I think you hit the right balance with this video when to have videographer and when to have you old style with your cameras at fix points. Absolutely stunning B Rolls. It's always a fun and funny with those bloopers, love it. Keep up with the excellent work the both of you. Well all the best Anna. :-). P.S apologies for the long comment.

Having owned the previous gen Sport it’s definitely a fun car. The 1.6 was a great little engine and loved a rev. Paying 14k for it new seems ridiculous now when you consider it needed no extras. Never let me down. Fond memories of it and I can’t say that about cars I’ve owned at a much higher price.

Tested it earlier, from what I heard about the previous gen, I definitely felt it fixed most of the cons but removed a good amount of the character when doing so. To me it is surprisingly quiet and well-dampened for what it is, and the engine is very torquey from low down (but not much after). However the steering felt over-assisted and for the gearbox - though the throw is short (shorter than ZC33s non-hybrid) it doesn't have much feel. To me the whole car doesn't feel much (including the paddles), that is from me who drive a car many ZC32/31 owners consider to be less engaging (Honda CR-Z - definitely has more steering and paddle feel, and far, far better gear box and sitting position than the ZC33S hybrid). I feel if it is cheaper with a lot more premium interior then it will be a very competitive package (at least coherent), but at £23k really can't be convinced to buy one (the interior just doesn't feel like £23k, the screen and the parking cam are particularly low-res), especially i20N costs just a bit more but offers so much more. Such a shame as I intended to buy this as the replacement for my car (by which this is the only one I consider to be a direct replacement) as I always wanted a Swift Sport.

    • @ikarugaxx3749
      @ikarugaxx3749 Год назад +1

i20N offers "much more". But is that the "much more" you, I, we need?
i20N like the other previous Hyunday Ns is cold-ish in temperament. It is a very finely set-up and made instrument to do something (performance, speed).
The Swift is, as they said in the review, and "alive thing", and about entertainment (fun) more than performance.
Most, or some, will be happier with the Swift than the i20N.
As for the soon-to-be-discontinued Fiesta ST, which is the queen of this type of car, it was downgraded with a 3-cylinder whose long-term reliability can be doubted, and its price went a lot up as the Swift's (but it's much higher).
Like the i20N, the Fiesta is more of a track car or a hard-driving car, and not so much of an entertainer for average drivers as the Swift.
So, even if they were all the same price, had the same fuel consumption, I'd go for the Swift, and I am going for it actually, despite the wild increase of price.
It costs nearly as much as a basic Mini Cooper, Audi A3, Mazda 3, cars that are way higher value objectively (due to how they are built), but... I am going to be more cheerful on a Swift than those, so, why not choose it?

The Swift Sport is a great car, we have the 2022 model non hybrid with 140hp and fuel economy just around town with heavy foot is about 6.2l/100km so about the same as Anna's test car which is hybrid with less power. Ours is also automatic with paddle shifters and also on test is a touch quicker than the manual alternative and as much fun. I don't see the point of hybrid in this car to sacrifice on power for no economy decrease. Also to all the GR Yaris boys, this car sells for around half price of a GR so apples and pears. Its like comparing Skoda to Audi
