  • Here we breakdown the key components to the foot change for a tack and gybe, these are things which we can practice at home without a kite so perfect for lockdown.
We work on keeping the board flat throughout the transitions
A quick single movement rather than lots of small movements
Starting and ending the board pointing riding across the wind.
With the Gybe the foot change can be done before or after the carve turn and so the board direction does not change at the same time as your feet.
With a tack your board and feet move in opposite directions.
We have a whole range of surfboard available from beginner to advanced here:

This is also useful if you want to get into foil boarding as we use the same techniques in the tack and gybe, you just have to be even more accurate with your planing angle.

Why do I need these foot steps? What are the disadvantages of simply doing transition tacks ? How do you tack with footstrapes?

Nice video! What do you use to attach the bar to so you don't mess up the lines? Thanks for the input.

I had fully unwound my lines and then just wrapped them at the right height around a hook that I usually put my wetsuit on to drip dry. If you leave the lines neatly to the side you can wrap them up after without any twists or tangles. Alternatively you can use a line winter or a piece of cardboard cut to the same shape.

Good idea for demo, but body position in relation to the bar is completely wrong
