I marched Freelancers in 83 and 84. It is amazing what BD and some other corps ask their brass players to do movement wise nowadays. Things are just way more difficult now! You have to have so much all around ability and talent. Congratulations on getting a spot with BD. I know they did not have a huge number of age outs last year so there could not have been that many open spots for trumpet players. I am so sorry that SCV is not able to field a corps this season. I sure hope the mighty Santa Clara Vanguard will be back in 2024. Good luck on a great summer. I believe 2023 will be the year BD gets its 3rd gold medal in a row!
Same is happening even on the Highschool level. Take Hebron for example they are one of if not the best Highschool band in America they do some dci level stuff for being 15-18 year old kids. My band tries to take inspiration from DCI and does a lot of jazz running, fluttering, and of course drill just to make it all "artistic".
Always love to see woodwinds making the switch for DCI! I switched from alto as well to mello and just marched my age out at Boston last year. Congrats on the contract my dude! Excited to see what y’all bring to field this year!

I marched Kingsmen, but turned down invites from Wayne Downey and Gail Royer. A lot simpler when I marched. Good luck, Have fun and remember to Breathe...... See you on the 50.
Wow....I marched VK in '87. Not trying to compare the two corps, but a ton has changed for auditioning for what we called "Soprano" back in the day! lol. We pretty much had to march on a stick mat, then audition in person at the end of a camp weekend. Congrats!

why the edited audio on the last two excerpts though? unless it was just a mic change the reverb sounds pretty artificial even though your tone on the other stuff was completely fine
Hey thanks for saying my tone sounded fine haha. Not sure, just thought it sounded better to me and more open because I was using my prof mic, I had it playing in my ear in real time and it made it more fun to play.

Everyone is at different playing in DCI and even in the Blue Devils. Sure there's a standard, which overlooks a lot of things like musicality, tone, range, and seeing if you can perform up to the standards that they want in the show, but it's not everything that determines if you make it. The visual side of the audition is just as important and if you were an excellent player but lacked visually you would have a way harder chance of getting in. There's also your attitude and teachability which counts. I'm definitely not the best player in the trumpets but I was contracted in one of the "best" drum corps¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

They still have in person audition camps and you are more likely to get a contract in person
