Heartbreaking to see the lovely Don Estelle looking so frail, but still having to sing for his supper. He was a great trouper and is still much missed by all his fans, God rest his soul.
True Philip, when he sang the original it was a song that went out through the sky. Great bloke. I suppose we all get old: here we see a man more gaunt, and not brimming with youth anymore . But there again , we can appreciate a man with a special gift. God bless you Don Estelle.
I was just taking a shower when this song popped in my head from my old memory bank! I felt the need to hear his sweet voice once again which led me to here. Rip Don and now Windsor
Beautifully put Laura, and I have just realised that this was in our very country, New Zealand, in the beautiful vineyard town of Blenheim. Privileged 🙏. Thanks also to the wonderful pianist
Absolutely amazing , he's still has an amazing voice , voice of an angel , they definitely don't sing like the old times anymore .Here to to all the Great singers ,Don , Windsor, Dean Martin Elvis Sammy d , Frank and many many more ❤️❤️🙏🙏🥂🥂🍾🍾
Some 18 months ago i did a Yt search for any song of his, I only found whispering Grass, but now there are many songs on you tube , when he was at his best. as a tribute to him and as a mark of respect I will go watching as many of his renditions as I can find.and give them all a like.
Saw Don in a Cumbernauld ( scottish ) shopping centre not long before he died. Selling his CDs from a trestle table. It was really sad that such a great singer and comedy character should spend his last months trying to make a living like this. No disrespect to traders who make their living this way but it was a shock to see the great Don Estelle struggling financially towards the end of his life
paulken11 I met him doing the same. He’d clearly fallen on very hard times & was very ill. I wondered at the time why he’d failed to be as successful as he could have been as a light entertainer and singer Then I found a copy of his autobiography “Thoughts Of A Gemini” and laughed at how awfully written it was...and then was saddened . Don had talent , but was clearly not the easiest person to work with. Not that he was unpleasant or a creep or anything like that-he was just a man out of time, I suppose. I even wondered if he had Aspergers , as 3/4 is the book seems to be just a catalogue of gigs performed, hands shook and so on, with the interesting parts of his career, like It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, given three paragraphs-in the WHOLE BOOK 😮 It was like he didn’t understand what people wanted , however well intentioned he was RIP Lofty... 😢
Same here. My mother and I saw him in Castle Quay shopping centre Banbury with his little stall right outside WH Smith. My mum was shocked that such a star, in her eyes, had been reduced to such measures. Looking back it was a sad sight, but my goodness what a powerful and wonderful voice he had. Should be regarded as one of the true great singers. RIP Lofty.
very sad at the end, but he will always be remembered by myself and a million others as a fine actor and brilliant talent and singer..they were certainly were a miserable bunch in the crowd..cheers Don and thank you for the memories that you left with us..RIP mate..
Wow, that voice really held up well! I don’t understand the comments about this being sad - a performer performs, and he’s doing what he did best here.
It makes me so sad my mum was so determined to sit and watch him on the lunch break at the Airshow which I was at were this filmed but of course I didn't realise who he was but looking back at it now makes me so glad that I got to see it but sad that I didn't realise what I was watching
Don Estelle sang this song beautifully on his own ( without Windsor Davies) What a wonderful voice he had always remembered. Thank you for posting. RIP Don Estelle.
Yes so sad he died in 2003.Google for his life story its interesting as he had a long association with Windsor Davies before `It Ain`t Half Hot Mum` tv show.
Such a beautiful voice. I could live for 200 years and I would NEVER be able to sing like Lofty! I remember in the 70's when this song was released and we all thought it had been dubbed, then we saw him and Windsor Davies singing it on the TV on a variety show!
I had no idea Mr Estelle had lived in New Zealand. What a pity that it didn't work out for him down here. You have to admire the guy. Here is someone who though very ill, could still put on a good performance. My hat off to you Sir!
Saw him in Woolworths Doncaster around 1975/6 promoting the record whispering grass, wonderful man. Still laughing at the complete series recently show on That’s Tv (Freeview)
I meet Don Estelle in Hemel Hempstead town centre in 1983,he was in Woolworths in his uniform and pith helmet signing copies of his album,i didn"t have any money so i asked him to sign my coat!...which he did!....i wish i still had it!!...rip Don
Sad to see ... But the only certain thing in life. At least he left behind this great version of this song . Rest in Peace Lofty ... you are not forgotten
I had the pleasure of meeting Don in 1984 when, as celebrity guest, he opened a new public house the building of which I had been involved in. He mentioned that he had hopes of teaming up with a north country comedian to form a new act but apparently nothing came of it. I liked him very much and I am very sad that his light faded too soon.
Sounds like he still had a great voice in his later years, and obviously not in the best of health.R.I.P. Lofty the heavenly choir never sounded so good.
Don was 70 years old,in obvious ill health, but still sang like a angel.
RIP little man with a giant voice.
Ill or I’ll?
RIP!!!! //Lars
Heartbreaking to see the lovely Don Estelle looking so frail, but still having to sing for his supper. He was a great trouper and is still much missed by all his fans, God rest his soul.
+Philip Thomas Still had the voice, but sadly less than six months later he was dead.
Amazing song, amazing man beautiful vocals. Don and the Aint Half Hot Mum team were very much part of my childhood and never forgotten
Maybe he did look a little frail yes but still even then able to produce a tune better than most if not all of the current 'top 40'! Speaks volumes.
He's 90 , I think he looks fab :)
@@Jellyroll66he was 70 when he died in 2003 .......
Little bloke, enormous and honey sweet voice. RIP and thanks for the laughs lofty.
Your mate's with you now :-( R.I.P. Don Estelle & Windsor Davies :-(
He did look frail but carried on nevertheless like the trooper he was. Well done mate.

Amazing singer, even at his age it was near perfect...This world didn't deserve such a little gem...
Always takes me back to my holidays in jaywich in the mid 70s this song was on every radio, happy days
His voice was pure romance. I hope he knows from where ever he rested in peace, that his voice was a once in a lifetime sound. #RIPDonEstelle

Wow, that voice really held up well! I don’t understand the comments about this being sad - a performer performs, and he’s doing what he did best here.
My Mums favourite song, we played the Davies /Estelle version at her funeral.

So, very painful to watch this great singer reduced to this Carnival.
With people walking past and have no idea who he is ,, sad ,
@@billsedge7360 i thought that. Young couples walking by completely ignorant to a great voice and tune being sung.
