Anyone here ever listen to Thomas Dolby's "Screen Kiss" with the late Matthew Seligman (14 July 1955 - 17 April 2020) on fretless? One of my favorite bass lines of any tune of any genre of music.
Thomas is a genius plain and simple- the man can do anything. I can't imagine what his brain is like- it's a wild place. What he did with analog synths in the 80s and made them sound organic and alive was insane. His musical composition is always catchy yet never predictable, every chord is a new turn but always comes around where you want to hear it again and again. And that is HARD TO DO.

Thomas Dolby is one of the best kept secrets in the music business and it is a shame. Blinded Me with Science was a blessing/curse for him. Unique, talented man.
Gate to the Mind's Eye completely blew me away back when I took a chance and bought the vhs brand new. I was the right age 15 or 16 and friends and myself were loaded and it was the music Dolby composed that took our breath away...especially when Valley of the Mind's Eye came on and his singing voice revealed it's true brilliance. From that point on I looked into everything I could find on him. His book Speed of Sound is incredible too. Glad to share my story with someone as intelligent as yourself after reading your comment
That's a very touching song. I think Thomas Dolby is a still underrated genius. I've found his music in the late 90's. There was one book about these synthesizer pioneers of the 80's and one of them was Dolby.
Listened to this one piece of my absolute favourite albums forever at least one or two hundred times, maybe three hundred times. And i still love it like on the first day i bought the CD and listened to it over and over and over the whole night through. Cheers, Thomas and all his fans worldwide!
"I Love You Goodbye" was his best song. I heard it shortly after I had to put to sleep my 17 year old Bo Terrier and it's been tough to listen to since.

What did you think of his song Valley of the Mind's Eye? And did you hear the songs he did for that film Gate to the Mind's Eye? Unbelievable, 1994 he did things on that whole soundtrack that we'll never hear or experience again. Love that he did it by himself without pro tools and Logic

Thomas Dolby? What? I've always loved this song, but had no idea you were involved. Go figure. Those harmonics at 3:37 and 3:41 - really nice touch. Thomas was - and is - so much more than most people will ever realize.
Chick Corea's music was a game changer for me. I first saw him in 1974 on PBS with Herbie Hancock. I was mesmerized from start to finish. I was disappointed when it was over because I wanted to hear more. I feel the same way today

I probably have the largest collection of early Thomas Dolby releases of anyone. I don't think there has ever been a more perfect pairing of musical artist and listener as we. I'm so glad that you got to work with him, Leland. When my old classmate at Berklee, Brian Transeau (aka BT) opened for him years ago I was really irritated because there was no way that he connected with Thomas's work the way I did - and do. And losing Chick Corea is an enormous loss. Just terrible. He had such delicacy in his playing.

The last time I saw him in 2016 was part of an 80 gig residency he did at the blue note here in NY. Saw two of the shows with the last one being a tribute to Return to Forever and Mahavishnu orchestra.. with McLaughlin, Victor Wooten and Lenny White. Holy smokes was it incredible and a dream come true to see him with my favorite gtr player. He looked amazing for 75 and moved better than me as well as played with that beautiful child like happiness that he had. RIP Chick Corea 😥💔
Love Dolby's music, especially "Airwaves" and "Budapest by Blimp." Among Prefab Sprout/Paddy McAloon fans, he is revered for his production on their finest albums, "Two Wheels Good," "From Langley Park to Memphis," and "Jordan: The Comeback."
His production is so perfect on his early albums and those Prefab albums, it's strange how his last album his ear and taste completely deserted him... could not get into it at all and it's boring to listen to too.. anyway I still love him!
He’s listening to all the other instruments and stoked for their parts too, what a wonderful analogy for being a human being. Such a musical veteran grooving to this song the same way I do - maybe more- is so heartwarming , and seeing everyone’s comments saying the same hugely heals me.
Nice Leland.....just sublime ! A favourite song from one of my favourite albums. Your playing on this track is top shelf (as always). I know a few people have posted below about this, so apologies if I run over old ground. This album featured (and almost on every Thomas album) the playing of the amazing man that was Matthew Seligman. Sadly we lost Matthew last year due to Covid 19. He was a huge influence on my bass playing after hearing his work on the album "The Flat Earth". A purely instinctive player who played some of the most beautiful lines (along with some beautifully written by Thomas). If people get a chance, check out his playing on the track "Mulu The Rain Forest" off "The Flat Earth". Matthew and I became friends over a decade ago, and also recorded an album together which was a real highlight for me. He was such a sweet guy and I miss him dearly. Thank you Leland for putting Thomas's music out there a little more. All the best :)
Unexpected track! I wouldn't have recognized Garcia even though his "voice" is clearly there, but in the context I'd have never have guessed. Also not a sound I'd have suspected from Thomas Dolby either. Definitely a "In The Air Tonight" Phil fill sound by the drummer. You and he had a good sound together!

It's a great song - I actually blasted this whole album two nights ago at an unreasonable hour, my neighbors were being loud, so they got the best album ever at high volume. If you ever listen to Foreigners' "4" album, all the synth work on it is mostly Thomas Dolby, like the intro to the song "Waiting for a Girl Like You". Beautiful atmospheric music. He also owns (owned ?) a company in Silicon Valley that creates ring tones for cell phones, and sounds for video games.

Thomas Dolby was another great artist on Capitol in the 80’s when I worked there that they didn’t really know what to do with. Interesting voice, gifted writer/arranger/player. The label pores all there money into one single - score! Second single - it’s a slightly smaller push; it doesn’t hit, and the label goes ‘one hit wonder’. By the 80’s the labels weren’t really interested in artist development anymore. It’s was either bit hits or out the door. At the same time, Warner Bros was breaking artists on their 3rd or 4th albums. Different cultures! TD was one we were rooting for back then... 45yrs ago, I got to see Return To Forever at the Orpheum Theatre in Madison, WI. Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. Wow-what a show! I’d seen Mahavishnu Orchestra a couple of years earlier and thought they were in a class by themselves, but RTF was in the same virtuoso superclass. They were all shredders, but it wasn’t just speed for speed’s sake. They were telling stories without words, groove-packed and tasty. RIP, CC. Legend.
Thomas wanted out of his deal but they would not let him go. They liked having the ability to drop his name at functions but not a clue what to do with him. It was the same for us with The Section. They had no clue what category we fit into so they did very little. But it was nice to drop our names at industry functions.
'92 and I bought a bundle of second hand CD's, and stuck this on the system in my second hand record shop. As I said that's Jerry Garcia on guitar some one wanted to buy. Couldn't sell it, no wonder I went out of business. Sorry Leland, I never guessed you were on one of my all time faves. Thanks so much. JG's guitar is just sublime.
I first heard Chick in the 80's I had gone to my girlfriend's house and her sister had just gotten her 13 albums for a penny. She handed me one and commented, "Here, you're into this weird shit". It was "Again and again". I was completely floored!! Needless to say, I became a lifelong fan. He will be missed by me.

It was a part of my life while in grad school and it proved to me then, that my classical piano training could translate to the music of my time. Yes, the loss of Chick Corea was a massive gut punch the other day .. I had no idea he had been ill. Been a huge fan since the 70s .. It truly is sad. We have his music .. 🙏🎹🎶❤️

Thomas Dolby was another great artist on Capitol in the 80’s when I worked there that they didn’t really know what to do with. Interesting voice, gifted writer/arranger/player. The label pores all there money into one single - score! Second single - it’s a slightly smaller push; it doesn’t hit, and the label goes ‘one hit wonder’. By the 80’s the labels weren’t really interested in artist development anymore. It’s was either bit hits or out the door. At the same time, Warner Bros was breaking artists on their 3rd or 4th albums. Different cultures! TD was one we were rooting for back then... 45yrs ago, I got to see Return To Forever at the Orpheum Theatre in Madison, WI. Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. Wow-what a show! I’d seen Mahavishnu Orchestra a couple of years earlier and thought they were in a class by themselves, but RTF was in the same virtuoso superclass. They were all shredders, but it wasn’t just speed for speed’s sake. They were telling stories without words, groove-packed and tasty. RIP, CC. Legend.
Thomas wanted out of his deal but they would not let him go. They liked having the ability to drop his name at functions but not a clue what to do with him. It was the same for us with The Section. They had no clue what category we fit into so they did very little. But it was nice to drop our names at industry functions.

'92 and I bought a bundle of second hand CD's, and stuck this on the system in my second hand record shop. As I said that's Jerry Garcia on guitar some one wanted to buy. Couldn't sell it, no wonder I went out of business. Sorry Leland, I never guessed you were on one of my all time faves. Thanks so much. JG's guitar is just sublime.
I first heard Chick in the 80's
I had gone to my girlfriend's house and her sister had just gotten her 13 albums for a penny. She handed me one and commented, "Here, you're into this weird shit". It was "Again and again". I was completely floored!!
Needless to say, I became a lifelong fan. He will be missed by me.

It was a part of my life while in grad school and it proved to me then, that my classical piano training could translate to the music of my time.
