Lon, I always find your video guides to Plex very informative! When I think I know Plex fairly well, I watch one of your videos and learn something new every time. At 82 years old, I remain very excited at being able to share with our large and widely dispersed family members the many home videos and photos I began shooting in the 1960's to the present!
It is so funny that you actually posted this video today. I'm actually working on converting a couple dozen VHS tapes over to be added to my Plex server and have found the person media part of Plex to be quite frustrating. It's like a 1 in 4 shot that the library actually updates and shows when I add new home movies. I've gone in and fiddled with the agents etc. And the best success I have had is that I actually end up having to go in deleting the library, creating a new library, and having it scan so that it actually properly populates all of the media in the associated folder.
No explanation how to setup the cell phone? Nice, my tablets and cell phones goes to Plex online and not my home server even if I type the address on the browser
I had old family 8mm film movies digitized and added the files to Plex. Young family members commented about missing audio. They were from the 1950s and 1960s
Have been curious as to sharing unlisted links to YT videos, Google Drive's spreadsheets and pdf's : Can those with whom you shared the links to any one of those three above links share access to a 3rd-party with whom I did not directly share the link via text messaging, etc.?
I have added my own home videos and work fine on pc and phone, but when I go to watch on plex app on chromecast with google tv they are rotated 90 degrees. It's there a solution please
Same thing I experienced got so excited then got dizzy trying to watch videos sideways .. This should be a feature that should have been in here years ago I still can't believe they haven't fixed this
Hi Lon, In order to get the real date and time of your Apple Photos files, select the desired Photos library file, then right-click and select "Show Package Contents" from the drop-down menu, then you can copy and paste the original file, preserved data. It works the same way for the Apple movie library, by the way!
Lon, would you suggest a way to put dashcam videos on Plex. If we go out for a day there will be hundreds of files for the 1 day as the dashcam records in 1 minute blocks.
I wanted to get started with Plex, but the new Nvidia Shield update has so many bugs. Mainly with storage access. It’s been like this for a little over 2 weeks.
i found it much easier to do it as a personal TV set instead , then you can have them all pregroup'd by file name /w S00E00 format and just relabel them all after , so say Christmass 2021 , and inside that , or just do Xmass , then do each season as the year
Great advice for organising home videos. The only thing i'd like to make mine look absolutely spot on would be able to have a thumbnail for my movie folder. On 11:14 of the video it is just a black square with a folder icon. Is there a way to place a photo there ? For example if I had a folder of videos from Holiday 2022 i'd like a photo from the holiday in that square ideally. There doesn't appear to be a pencil icon to add such a thing.
Lon, That was a VERY informative and interesting video! I have recently been converting our old Family VHS movies and accumulating all our old family videos onto a new Synology NAS I purchased. I think you have a Synology (or had one). I have a few questions please? 1- If I point the Plex (that I can get for the Synology), to the Family Movies folder I will create, does Plex make another copy of the file or just a shortcut to it? 2- You showed us how to change the date of the videos but does that only change the date of the aformentied shortcut in the Plex library or does it change the video file in my Family folder (hopefully)? 3- I know I can create links to my family videos on my Synology and just let my family view the videos and pictures directly from the Synology NAS, but is there an advantage of using Plex if everyone is already on an idevice or Apple product? I recently discovered on my Mac (I’m still new to the Mac world) that when I “move" a video or photo file it usually (not always) retaines the original creation date vs if I copy it to another location it will change the creation date as you mentioned in your video. Very frustrating especially since I deleted the original files after I copied them over to a differnt drive before noticing …Argggggg. Thanks again for another of your informative videos!
I would say Plex has an advantage in that you have better organization tools and they can watch from their TV's in addition to mobile devices. Key thing though is to ensure your Synology supports transcoding in case they are bandwidth constrained. Plex will not make copies of the files, all of the meta data is stored in the Plex database. So if you make a change to the file it's only in the database and not to the file itself.
Thank you for this video. I created a library dedicated for family videos and pictures. I have multiple users including our children. I granted the kids access to the family videos and pictures. The libraries are visible on their account but they are empty . I think it s related to the content ratings. Do you happen to know how to select multiple videos and change their content ratings in one shot instead of going through each video? Thank you.
Thank you for this! Do you know if it's possible for the metadata you linked to the file (on plex) can overwrite the file and change the same 'physical' file to the new metadata?

That should be a fun use case !
This is very informative. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

Hmm.. Is it having trouble indexing even if you request it rescan the directory?
Home Movies is a great show, one of the best adult swim shows out there.
For editing file name, I would recommend doing that on the file directly it’s self and then let it update into Plex
Is it possible to add descriptions to custom videos similar to how TMDB and TVDB do?
Keep up the great work

I have put old home videos on my plex server too. It's a convenient way to access them vs. combing through file folders.
I typically upload my family videos to RUclips with an unlisted link and share that way.
Have been curious as to sharing unlisted links to YT videos, Google Drive's spreadsheets and pdf's :
Can those with whom you shared the links to any one of those three above links share access to a 3rd-party with whom I did not directly share the link via text messaging, etc.?
@@That_Handle If they have the link, it can be re-shared. You can disable it later if needed.
@@TonyPadgett ,
That would cut off sharing to everyone with the link..... Hm. A boolean algebraic shortfall conundrum.

I saw your shelves behind you and I just had a flashback to my childhood. lol Is that a Timex computer on the middle shelf?

This is so frustrating all my videos show up sideways no way to fix? Need a way to rotate video orientation landscape or portrait
So you have to label your kids name manually each time you take a photo so Plex can organize it for you?
Lon, would you suggest a way to put dashcam videos on Plex. If we go out for a day there will be hundreds of files for the 1 day as the dashcam records in 1 minute blocks.
I'm not sure Plex is a good option for that unfortunately.
Is there a way to rate or tag video from the AppleTV client? The only thing I see one can do is set watched or unwatched.
How would I send all these files to someone for them to watch them
Lon when is Nivdia or Plex going to fix the issues created with the last update? It’s been weeks with nothing working
I have a Pr4100 and looking to upgrade to a new nas with Plex. Any suggestions? Not sure if a want another Pr4100.
Thanks
how do you rotate movies?

My plex no longer generates the posters for personal videos... They show up but just black... It used to pull three thumbs to choose from.... HELP...🥵

You can select the videos in the upper left hand corner via the web interface and bulk edit.
Lon, I have a WD PR 2100 and rip my blue ray DVDs with MKV but several will not play on my TV due to server is not able to transcode. Any advice?
4K or 1080? What player?
I stopped using plex years ago. Haven't thought about using it again. hmm
Thank you for this!

It won’t write back to the file all of the changes will be stored in the plex database.
Hi Lon. Do you know if or when it is possible to integrate books (epub, pdf, cbr, ...) to Plex?
Not at the moment just audio visuals for now.
@@LonSeidman 😞 What a pity. I hope they implement it soon. Thanks for fast Response ☺
I put my movies on dvd using a dvd recorder. They don’t make them anymore. It was simple!😂
Much easier to use Google photos
