I just picked up a GTI mk7.5 in Atlantic blue with the Brescia wheels and it’s a cracking car! Much nicer looking than the R but the R drives better! More about the icon for me though!

I do prefer the look of the gti than the R. I don’t buy new I buy used. So if I have seen R’s the same price as gti’s.
I’d only buy the r if it was cheaper or same price than the spec I wanted in the gti. Because I can stage 1 the gti and have same power and better looking car minus 4motion. And I’m not that fussed because did get either in manual only.

No, the GTI has heritage and style. The R is cool but more for people who don't know better than that the R is the most powerful golf. I could afford the R if I wanted to but I would much more like a GTI because of the fact that it is a GTI. The name GTI is a classic name that has been around for decades. It has style, rust, heritage and history. The Golf R is for people who want to blast rap music while revving their engines outside night clubs. There is no style nor respect in that. Basically the Golf R is for kids.
Lol Golf R any day. Doesn’t matter if the GTI is an icon, the R is just better. The only reason why you’d get the GTI now is if you got a better deal (as mentioned) or need more boot space (because of the lack of AWD)

I do agree with you to an extent..... the GTI is an icon but VW screwed them self when they released the R32 which led on to the R. I think my point being the R should be the GTI and sack off the R nameplate. Back in the day the 205GTI and the MK2 GTI 16v Golf were two of the quickest hot hatches around now the GTI has been to watered down. That said the GTI details are nicer than the R. 👍🏼

GTI with DSG is a great daily car choice, I couldn’t see enough advantages to spend the extra on an R
Try one and you'll see the difference, the IS38 turbo is completely on a higher level.

From a guy who’s had mk 4 and 5 R32s and now in a mk7 R Im honestly blown away with the R … but have lots of love for the GTI . What a iconic car , both great motors .
I owned a GTI mk 7 (347 hp). Now i own a R 7.5 (400 hp). The R is the better one. The traction is amazing. With the GTI always spinning wheels. With the R none. And it is a lot quicker. I love it.

I test drove both. In normal traffic (which is an absolute pain here in Tampa, FL), the GTI was more entertaining due to the lighter weight and torque coming on a bit lower in the range. Golf R was very impressive, don’t get me wrong, and very fast, but in normal daily driving it felt a bit boring to be honest. All depends on use and preference, but I found the GTI the more entertaining daily driver
I love the GTI. Personally, I have a MK7 GTI sport. If I had the money I would have gone for the Golf R, but I completely understand your reasoning for choosing a GTI over the R, especially since you already have supercars to get your ridiculous speed fix when you need it. I love the fact that you kept the car really low key spec wise, but if there is one thing I think you have to do, it would be aftermarket wheels.
Obviously I'm outnumbered here. Most of you prefer the GTI over the golf r. I have owned an MK5 and MK6 GTi. They we're both great cars! It was fun to romp around as well as daily Drive in those gti's. That being said, I purchased an MK 7.5 Golf R and I can say without a doubt it is a massive Improvement! I live in the mountains so even our highways are twisty and you can feel the rear end push you around the turns when you're pushing it a little bit. Among many other reasons I would prefer a golf are one hundred percent of the time. But that's just one person's opinion🤷🏻

“The morning after”
Mine is brand new and the only problem I have is the lower engine mount moves too much. I can release the clutch pedal slow and sometimes the car still clunks. I'm not even gonna warranty the part, I'm adding a mount insert to forget it altogether. Other than that it's a ridiculously fun car for the price.

Each to his own, it's all personal opinion. Golf R, more power, better handling, leather upholstery as standard, more aggressive stance and I prefer the styling on the R. Mine arrives in 5 weeks.

I had the R for two years and recently changed to a mk7.5 GTI, both DSG and although I miss the traction and power of the R, I’m really enjoying the 2wd fun that be had with the GTI, also spending a decent chunk less on fuel and paying less through financing, they’re both great to drive, I just don’t miss the R as much as I thought I would.

It's supposed to be a daily, not a track car. This is a difference between golf and cars like type R and focus RS and so on, golf is much better at being a daily.
3 years later, but I've just bought my '16 plate PP with every extra, 50k miles under 15k GBP, just incredible bargains these cars.
The GTi is a 50 year classic, the R a good car none the less will come and go and won’t have the history the GTi has. The R is a good car however.

I've had a 7.5 R for a while. Here is the problem that GTI owners face.
Stock the performance is abysmal, it's a fun go kart car that suffers torque steering but has no straight line performance and lacks the AWD trackability of an R.
Now here comes the next problem: upgrades. Suspension, brakes, and anything control wise they both take amazing and are one of the best platforms out there. However, if you buy an R and modify it (mine is currently on IE's full stage 2 lineup and tune) it can actually use the performance upgrade where a GTI will......spin. My R is somewhere around 400-415 crank, it dyno'd 352 at the wheels. That's mostly wasted on a GTI. Don't get me wrong, GTI's can use that and have tracked well but that's for GTI's that are setup as track toys and the drivers are GOOD. Even with a good driver they simply would do better if they had access to AWD. I think they are both good cars, but one is a sports car, the other is a sports car attempting to be a race car. I love my car, but next car needs to break into the 10s without danger of breaking.

I can see where you’re coming from re. Icon etc, manual would have been better though! I got one of the original amazing Golf R deals (was cheaper than a gti at the time) £1340 down and £192 a month for 2 years. Couldn’t not have one at that price! Had an M140 after that but preferred the golf to be honest. Now got a 17 year old MG ZS 180, and it’s more fun than both (had one new when I came out of uni), remember why I loved it so much - can use the performance, proper handling, feel, NA engine and noise, no gimmicks. If manufacturers could recreate that they’d be onto a winner.
That is an insane lease deal. I am in the market for a dsg golf gti, r or even if I am really pushing it a GTD. But I don't want to spend over 200/250 a month. Everyone seems to get great deals but I can't find any. Is it about knowing the right people? Could you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!
waveyLP I don’t think deals exist anymore like that one. I’ve not seen anything like it since unfortunately but I got it through www.leasing.com . It largely depends what cars are coming out I think, think dealers had huge allocations of them so were able to offer cheap deals, if residual values are high maybe the lease is cheap. Not quite sure how it works to be honest.

The Golf R is not the equivalent of Rs3 or A45
They just mean it is the top of the model range for the Golf, as the RS3 and A45 are range toppers for their lines.

I have Unitronic tuned Gti Mk VII, non PP. 280+ whp and an open diff (they are cheap used in the US). It's chaos when you floor it, especially if driving one-handed. How about a challenge for you and Archie trying this in central London traffic?
How's the gti like on fuel? Can you achieve +350 miles on a full tank by driving sensible.

I traded in my R for a gti, definitely prefer looks of it over the R personally and still quick enough for the odd B road blast. Thinking of swapping my manual for a DSG at the weekend though.

I think you guys are missing the point . Having owned a lot of golfs my first being a big bumper 16v gti . Vw got in to a lot of competition from other manufacturers in the hot hatch market. So they made the vr6 . I owned one and loved it . This was the birth of the R then the r32 etc .
It was to show the competition that vw can still make the best hot hatch .
I own a mk 7.5 R and traded a 7 gti .
Both drive great.
My gti looked better but the R drives better .

See if you pay monthly for a car, can you still mod it in terms of getting new wheels, new exhausts and things like that?
Have you EQ’d the audio from the iPhone, cos the bass is missing and hence it sounds quite treble heavy, however when you were filming the dog and the golf, the warmth came back?

The reason why there are so many Golf Rs on the road is because there have been serveral lease deals over the years with a deposit as little as 2K and monthly price of 200. Quick google will show you.
