The guy playing young Lister is actually Craig Charles' baby brother. 😊
And his band are Jeff Walker and Bill Steer of Liverpool's very owen Carcass (though Bill was in Napalm Death at the time).
Thanks for stealing my comment
@@TheRivieraKid There were only 6 comments when I posted and yours wasn't one. We were probably typing at the same time. 😅
That’s so crypto-fascist, man! ;)
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t I never knew that. That is super cool. I remember seeing footage of Napalm Death on Craigs kids show about the arts, maybe that's why they're in this, or vice versa.
I'd like to give a shout out to Chris Barrie's expert delivery of the "Who is the rich man?" speech. Impeccable comic timing.
I’ve only just noticed after years of watching that Holly ‘ducks’ when lister kicks the briefcase bomb haha
The Red Dwarf books delve more into Lister's mental state after first emerging from stasis. Compared with the show he takes it very hard and he basically stops caring about everything. He doesn't even bother to dress, he just spends every day wandering around the ship naked, swigging from a whiskey bottle until he passes out. That's when Holly brings back Rimmer to keep him sane.
The books are really great for that in general, you really understand why each character is so screwed up and how it happened in a way the show doesn't touch on as much . Plus its just darker too, Lister and Kat both become addicted to the "Better than Life" game and spend something like 2 years in it. Kryten spends his days stopping them hurting themselves and making sure they're clean and fed and don't get bedsores. Listers scene where he married the GELF is so much more graphic too, the description of Lister waking up during the nuptials had me cringing so bad!
@jonnydarkfang2816 Don't you mean Cat? Kat's one of the ladies in the reaction! 😂
@@mardroidmk1393 lol, Damn autocorrect!😂😂😂
the books were great! cyberia and the "circle of sacere facere", the giant slug-giraffe who thinks everyone retching is just normal because thats how everyone always reacts to him, great ideas that stick with me to this day!
@@natmanprime4295 Cyberia was so cool! Each prisoner gets an existence they will find miserable. Lister gets there and his jail is actually really nice, great food, it's clean and calm. Then the staff discovers there has been a mix up, he's been switched with a different prisoner and his own personal prison is actually miserable as hell. The evil Lister getting tied up, then sticking his own arms into the fire and holding them there till the rope burns, was also really memorable.
The books build on every concept from the show and just make it even better. Think I need to buy them again as I lost my copies a while ago...
🎶He's got a swatch watch and a file-o-fax so he can correlate his facts 🎶 ... I love this episode! Also featured the American comedian Ruby Wax but it seems she's not well known these days!
Yep, it's definitely Adolf Hitler as himself. He has a cast credit on IMDb.
I find it easiest to assume the Red Dwarf retcons (Redcons?) are because we’re sometimes seeing episodes from minutely different timelines/realities.
It only clicked recently, but the end of this episode completely retcons Series 1 and 2, since Rimmer would have been alive through it. So Lister would have no knowledge of the significance of Gaspacho Soup
Bear in mind that from series 3 each season takes place over about a year, so stuff like Kryten's party and a lot of tabletop golf and Durex volleyball happens between episodes. We only get to see the disasters.
Also the actor playing Lister's butler is the late Robert Addie, who played Mordred in the movie Excalibur and Guy of Gisburn in Robin of Sherwood, one of the greatest versions of Robin Hood ever made.
That's a cool fact! I love Excalibur.
Yeah, I always liked his Gisburn. Robin of Sherwood is definitely dated now, but I haven't seen anything else since that mixes in old british/celt mythology/fantasy the way that show did.
I loved that version of Robin Hood so much when I was a kid. Found out that the guy who played Naseer was also Gates in Black Sails 🤯
Love the subtle joke of young Rimmer being forced to wear boxing gloves to bed by his boarding school
Dalas, November 1963? Nah, that'll never happen... Right?
Come to think of it. Not only would cat and kryten vanish. Rimmer would never have been brought back as a hologram either as he was only brought back to keep Lister sane, and Holly would never have changed his face since the ship would never have gone to a parallel universe, since the point was to get Lister back to Earth.
But, I guess there'd be no show if that happened.
Unpack Rachael and get out the puncture repair kit. hehehe. My favourite line in this episode. hehehe
They didn't see digital cameras coming did they? Developing prints in a darkroom centuries in the future!
- "Itchy nose time."
- "Fuss with hair time."
- "I have candy!"
Are you sure you're not cats yourselves?
That presenter was an American from Illinois- Ruby Wax. Comedian mixing observational humour with playing with American tropes, better known for 'Ruby Wax meets' interviewing series in the mid 90s
Wife of the director who stepped in after the auditions closed upon the death of the intended performer - the late Dr Graham Chapman MD of Monty Python fame. [Brian/King Arthur]
Wow, I had no idea about that. Imagine seeing a Python on Red Dwarf.
Haha, I totally forgot about the "Special Guest Star" credit. Gotta love it.
There are even some scifi ideas that show up in Red Dwarf before they show up in more popular shows (you’ll see a Star Trek Voyager concept show up in a later season years before it shows up on Voyager). They have the willingness and the freedom explore weird scifi shit that is more akin to Hitchhikers Guide and Dr Who than something like Star Trek or Star Wars
Red Dwarf - "jump started the second big bang" before DR Who. The did the "unrumble" before Dr Strange.
12:27 Aaawww! I was hoping we get to see your reactions to one of the best lines.
Rimmer: Kryten, unpack Rachel and get out the puncture repair kit!
True UK style comedy... it goes dark!
No discussion about how Rimmer ended up being alive at the end of the episode?
My head-cannon is that after narrowly missing out on being a millionaire as an 8 year old kid, Rimmer grew up to be more receptive to the idea that a future version of himself occasionally pop's back in time and gives him advice.
So when Rimmer appears to himself in Stasis Leak thing's play out differently for Rimmer, and he actually takes the advice to use the second stasis pod and so survives the radiation leak that wipes out the crew.
This means that from this point onwards Series 1 & 2 of Red Dwarf as we see them didn't actually play that way for the characters (and continuity only gets more wonky from this point onwards as a result of the crews time travel shenanigans).
I always find it useful to assume each series is in a slightly different continuity all its own. Related, but... don't worry about it.
I like it. 👍
My personal theory is the Universe was still sorting itself out until it remembered, "hang on! He should be dead! I'll soon put a stop to this nonsense." Because in future episodes Rimmer always maintains he was killed in the radiation leak.
Basically Death in this world has a sense of humour. 🤣
I worked with the bass player in an office in Liverpool. Jeff is also the bass player in heavy metal band, Carcass.
Hahaha, a bit of Doctor Who crossover, kinda.....don't mess with he past 😉😂😹H 🛰🤖
I think the both of you would absolutely adore Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.
Oh holy shit yes.
I can still not get half those songs out of my head.
I want the rest of the population infected too.
It’s pancake day yes it’s pancake day yes it’s pppppppp pancake day….
Although, they might need a translator to get a lot of the very 1980s England jokes. Like the Worksop to Scunthorpe tunnel. Which probably wouldn’t make any sense unless you were living in England at the time. But it was a great show in so many respects. I loved it to bits.
Mud.
Deep fried mud.
Egg fried mud.
Sweet and sour mud.
Never heard of Father Bloopy? Well I'll tell you! 🎵It's Bloopy Eve........... 🎵
Great reaction per usual gals. I think two of my own personal favorite details of this episode are the perfectly timed transitions between the Dwarf and the phots and second I love when Rimmer says "It's my duty as a complete and utter bastard". I die laughing at it every time. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
From what I understand the photo of Kryten was from his old ship and crew mates, if you listen closely you can hear a different crew wishing him happy birthday. I love this episode, it's what got me into Red Dwarf all those years ago!
Nimm2 basically means Eat two. They're tasty candies.
the theory is that because he interacted with himself as such a young kid, when he saw himself when they went back in time he no longer thought it was a mushroom induced hallucination and went into stasis as he had advised himself, (which also meant the body swapping part from the previous episode never took place in that timeline)
I never thought of it like that. That's a good theory
nice
It's a good theory, but then who failed to seal the drive plate? Unless he did before he went into stasis, but then surely he knew it would cause the accident. Then did he do it on purpose? Thinking about it crosses my eyes.
@@GamerWhomaybe that paradox is why Rimmer immediately got himself killed at the end of the episode. It was the timeline trying to correct itself.
My head canon is this is the episode where the TV show is brought inline with the first book. From this point on Lister and Kochanski dated rather than him just looking on from afar etc etc. This is also the point where Lister suddenly becomes slightly less of a slob etc.
The Kryten birthday party picture is feom when he was still aboard the Nova 5.
The money song is written and sung by Craig Charles the actor who plays Lister.
This was such a great episode! I especially loved Kryten's "Dallas 1963" joke and immediately realizing it was in bad taste 🤣
The song playing in the background during the first few seconds of the mansion scene was "Cash" recorded by Craig Charles exclusively for the episode. Also, the newswoman was played by Ruby Wax. She played Ralph Hapschat's ex-wife Betty in Shock Treatment.
I only just learned from this comment section last week that Ruby Wax was married to Red Dwarf director Ed Bye.
Is there a Rocky Horror connection there?
@@elfboy29 I think when they both got jobs at Denton's DTV studio, Betty and Ralph marriage fell apart. Must've happened during a broadcast of Marriage Maze.
Young Lister is played by Craig Charles younger brother.
Lots of great cameos in this one, most of who will be unknown outside the UK (like comedian Mark Steel as one of the skiiers). Young Lister is Craig Charles's brother and the Heads are both members of grindcore band, Carcass.
Ruby Wax too.
Ah yes, nimm2 (take2). They have been a staple German bonbon candy since the 60s and are indeed really good.
I jokingly told my brother today that those strawberry candies were the ones I'd poison if I were poisoning candy on Halloween because no parent wants to check them.
FYI, Young Lister is played by Craig Charles' little brother, Emile.
You've got many series left with RD but if you'r looking for content, with unusual British sitcoms, here's a few suggestions.
TV:
The Greeen Wing.
Spaced.
Black Books.
Coupling.
Radio (I don't know if this would work for a video but I'll suggest some):
Cabin Preassure.
Bleak Expectations.
Yep, Kryten's photos were from the Nova 5.
This episode is absolutely brilliant. It's worth it just for The Om Song by Smeg and the Heads alone! 😂 let alone all the other great stuff.
Lister's posh wife is played by Koo Stark. She was like the original Megan Markle. She dated prince Andrew in the early 80s but the Queen, and the tabloid press, disapproved of her because she was an actress and had done a X-rated movie
And there's a universe where she wasn't cut out of Star Wars.
Prince Andrew probably also decided she was too old for him.
@@DavidWright1138 before the wikipedia rabbit hole I just went down, I might have guessed Koo Stark was an upcoming Disney+ series about a Jizz cantina impresario.
I wonder if the Royals, given what's been happening with Prince Andrew now, would have welcomed her into the family! They weren't crazy about Fergie, so he was never getting it right.
Random little bit of trivia: the drummer and bassist supporting young Lister are played by Jeff Walker and Bill Steer, members of the famous death metal/grindcore band Carcass.
The young lister is Craig Charles aka Lister's younger brother in real life
They really play with the Comedy & Tragedy in this show, I love it all.
It was Craig Charles's Brother who play his Lister's younger self. He sadly died a few years ago.
No, that was their older brother Dean. Emilie is still alive.
Ruby Wax as Kate McKinnon? I genuinely don't know who would be more flattered.
The "Young Lister" was actually played by Craig's real-life younger brother.
You're going to love series 4...it just keeps getting better and better as the show goes on ....love these reactions.❤❤❤
Funny thing is, the guy playing young lister, is actually Craig Charles younger brother lol
Just wait til Rimmer gets his justice...
Ruby Wax (the newswoman) married Red Dwarf Producer Ed Bye. Rimmer, the greatest of all bastards!
The guitar music Kryten is jamming to is performed by Lister.
In case you don't know, some posh British families whose name begins with F will insist on spelling it with two small fs instead of one capital F; fforbes-Hamilton, ffitzRoy and so on. I assume that the reason Rimmer keeps saying 'Sabrina Mulholland-JuhJones is that Sabrina's family insist on spelling their name jjones with two small js.
Young Lister was actually Emil Charles, Craig (Dave Lister) Charles' younger brother.
This is my favourite episode ever. I can't wait season 4 and Episode 2 Dimension jump.
Love Kats blue hair! I had that colour!
Thank you Gals for getting me to start pre-watching Red Dwarf on the BBC website again. My best memories of German candies at Christmas with my grandparents was Mon Cheri. A liquor chocolate with a cherry inside. So "grown up" when I was a kid. My German grandfather would also make such a drama of cutting the heads off of the marzipan mice.
Nice you are warming to Robert Lewellyn. He's truly the nicest man you could ever meet.
You might want to skip the intro for the first few episodes of each season (series) now to avoid spoilers. Thanks again for giving the show a chance
Kryten rocking out to 1980s rock music on a cassette tape while developing photos in a darkroom is the most dated thing in the entire series.
People probably kept losing their CDs, MP3s and SD cards...
Either it's dated or Kryten is some kind of 5th wave hipster. 😆
Come to think of it, the whole series hinges on Lister being sent to stasis after sending a photo of himself with his cat to be developed in the ship's lab. I guess people got sick of not having physical copies of photos and renounced digital.
Anyone recognise it? The first bar sounds like "We close our eyes" by Go West but the rest of it doesn't
9:31 Bloody hell! Never noticed! Gilbert is the actor who played Guy of Gisborne from the 80's Robin Hood TV series (Robin of Sherwood 1984-86) The Sheriff of Nottingham was perfect in that one.
This is one of the episodes I've been waiting for you to watch, this and the entire series 5
In the remastered version, they actually added a water effect to Lister’s statue of him urinating.
And changed the music to something that didn't need overseas rights negotiating.
@@AlmightyCRJ that's odd, isn't it Craig's song?
@@GamerWho It is - Cash, Sons of Gordon Gecko. Still needs rights clearing though as Grant Naylor don't own it.
Also not much benefit to the non English countries - the replacement is classical music.
The lead singer of Smeg in the Heads is actually Craig Charles' younger brother in real life. (Emille Charles)
Fun fact: the 17yo Lister is actually Craig Charles', aka Lister's, younger brother.
Must be Smeg'n Thursday!
Theoretically, if Rimmer's attempt to change his past had been successful, Lister, Cat and Kryten would still disappear, because the radiation leak would never have happened, Lister would have returned to Earth to live a normal life, the Cat race wouldn't have evolved (aboard Red Dwarf at least) and Kryten would never have been rescued. 🤯
That was a great episode, really enjoyed that, Rimmer thinking he is back to being alive only to be back to being a Hologram for a few minutes was funny😆 You two uptake and warm nature on the episodes makes me almost believe I am there enjoying watching the episodes with both of you.
I always loved the Om joke lol
I am so very glad you stuck with Red Dwarf. As your audience kept telling you, it gets better and better. Now do you begin to believe us ? Watch s3 e6 for the party. Things don't happen in sequence. This is Red Dwarf. By series 12 you will understand in full. But I think you are already hooked.
Rimmer becoming alive and immediately blowing himself up with an, “I AM ALI-“…. My all time favourite moment from the show. There are better episodes, but as far as single moments, that does it for me.
The actors in sit coms just play generally their own characters .These actors play multiple different versions of themselves in totally different settings .
I wonder if you guys understood the reason for wearing box gloves to bed?
You actually feel sorry for Rimmer in this episode.
You guys need to start your own merch soft drink called CatCola.
It is loose on continuity but you have to remember, space/time consistently is being played with and these guys have been on that ship for years, and we're only seeing a small glimpse into their daily lives.
so glad you're into the swing of things! greta stuff
I don't know if it has been mentioned here before but you should watch the episode of Robert Llewellyn's (Kryten) carpool interview series where he interviews Patrick Stewart. But give it a bit of time as it may contain spoilers.
To phrase it in the most non-spoilery way possible. I cannot wait for you see Winnie The Pooh's cameo.
Or Ace
Dallas, 1963. That'll come back to haunt them...
its still gonna get better
The photograph idea was explored by Stephen King in his short story "Sun Dogs"
Y’know Red Dwarf is great and all but what I really wanted was 15 minutes of Kat and Paula raving 🤷🏻♂️
We are here to make dreams come true ✨️
The Cat Sat on the Lap.
Nimm2 translates into "take 2". They are vitamin sweets and 2 of them are meant to give you your daily dose of vitamins
I'm guessing you two must be familiar with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy already?
I wanna see them watch an episode of takeshis castle 😂
The premise brings up an interesting question. What picture do you have that you would use to watch a specific event or a personal one you would like to back to?
The guy playing smeg is actually listers nephew in real life so its a family member
Gallifrey Gals watch timeslides the plots are brilliant and go here there and literally everywhere and can still go anywhere they want to it's how they have managed to make 12 series and all episode are just completly different and brilliant. Yeah the snow was actually mash potato kat you called it. And watch holly duck in the background when the bomb goes of. The rest others have already put in the comments about Craig's brother playing himself in the past. Some humour comes back around, from these episodes as well. All you can say is the writer's writing is incredible. Now you can see why some say series 3 is where it kicks off.
The only major mess up with this episode is that Rimmer’s program never would have been turned on had Lister never joined the Space Core, Rimmer was brought back partially because Holly went slightly computer senile and mostly because he drove Lister nuts to the point it ironically kept him sane by giving him a fundamental opposite to bicker with instead of the isolation slowly driving him to madness. Without Lister he never would have reached the crew status needed to be revived as a hologram.
It’s not massive deal mind you but it does open up some questions about why Rimmer is still there.
For me, Timeslides is one of those episodes that I forget about.... and then remember, and really enjoy it again. LOL It's a great premise (considering it's a sci-fi comedy), and the only thing that weighs it down for me is Ruby Wax (the lady who reports on millionaire Lister) as I'm not a fan... (she is/was well known in the UK) I remember watching this the first time and actually thinking for a brief moment that they had decided to make Rimmer real - then - BAM!
You haven't seen anything yet wait till later series theres some mega crazy stuff
Some interesting thoughts about the series , patience is a virtue gals , Kryten will be wearing that suit at some point in the future . Loved seeing you react to this one , a unique and imaginative idea . There are a few photos I'd certainly love to visit , the Ommm song definitely not one but it's a great plot Lister realising his dreams and Rimmer messing it all up until they are back to square one .
I forgot the person who played Listers Girlfriend was Koo Stark, one of Prince Andrews Exes..
Why'd they split? Was she too old for him?
Really happy you're getting into it.
Was that... Ruby Wax as the newscaster?
Yes.
I loved reliving the episode with you GallifreyGals, I first watched this as a teen here in the UK. One of the few shows both me and my girlfriend watched and could talk about...
Her husband is the director, Ed Bye
Even better on grayjay
It was remade as a movie with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt...
If you ever want another sci-fi series that gained a cult following you might enjoy Lexx it ran from 96-02 it started as 4 made for tv movies which then turned into a series.
Craig and Hattie appeared as guest stars in that too! (Although it wasn't a very good episode.)
