I made a massive mistake for not using Polident to clean my retainers before wearing them for 2 years. This caused me to have advanced periodontal disease. Some of my pockets were as bad as 12mm, nothing less than 7mm. Thank God for LANAP, I recovered. And didn’t lose a single tooth. I actively brush and floss multiple times a day now. And have never bled ever since.

Hey bro, out of curiosity when you say recovered how much did the pockets improve/did they all improve well? I’ve heard a lot of positive about lanap compared to everything else it seems, i recently was told by my dentist I have a 6mm pocket around one tooth and im starting to feel uncomfortable about it after learning abit about how bad gum disease can get if left unchecked and might go that route but still not sure yet.

@@MonkeyLiggaScrumptiousNan hey buddy, unfortunately some damages are irreversible (had I only known). The more severe pockets, the bone around the tooth after the surgery just gets stronger (the wobbliness stops). And for the pockets which were 7mm, significantly improved. Over 1.5 years, the bone grew back to 4-5 mm. Anyway I recommend LANAP over open flap surgery because it hurts only for 2 days, and way less chances of infection.

@@monjurulhaque2425 cheers bro appreciate that, it really does sound like the most bang for your buck option and has the most potential for realistic results. Can only hope one day sooner rather than later as technology/lasers get better they can make gum disease of any stage an easy and routine fix.

Great informative video. So well explained. I have been informed of some deeper pockets that require this deep cleaning. However I choose to get a second opinion as this is an expensive procedure and will necessitate more permanent follow-up visits per year.

I have OCD when it comes to my teeth, since childhood in fact! Yep I smoked for y ears, stopped a year ago. I use a water floss etc,etc ..Was diagnosed with gum disease just after the pandemic, I did not know I was type 2 diabetic.. Changed my lifestyle pronto, including fasting .. But I have two loose teeth..This, I am 100 per cent sure caused the problems, including my blood sugars. I was 11 now a consistent 5 on my bloods. Lifestyle changes are very important. Great vid and I wish I could afford you

You are very right Juliet in thinking that lifestyle changes are crucial to success. I would go as far as saying that the are the first (and most important) step on the pathway to treatment. I am SO GLAD to hear that you have consistently been able to maintain such a low HbA1c. Congratulations on that. Ultimately, this means that you have set yourself up to have successful treatment when you are ready for it. Our door will always remain open to you when you are ready. Best wishes Ope

Thank you Doctor for such a fantastic explanation. I have serious gum recession issues and now know the options for treatment. I wanted to ask do you think adding an anti septic mouthwash like Listerine to our oral care regiment will help reduce gum disease as it can help kill bacteria in the pockets. But I read that it also kills good bacteria and the effect is only temporary for a few hours so have minimal benefit but worse because of its acidic PH it damages enamel and its alcohol content could cause cancer. And do you think a Waterpik is effective addition to oral hygiene? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

Hello, thank you for the informative video. You mentioned that the treatment involves changing the bacteria in the mouth. Don't you think that oral probiotics might help changing the oral microbiome? If yes, which probiotic would you recommend?

@londonDentalSpecialists Excellent. But what if the root cause was linked to GERD/IBS ? I mean, i have enzymes deficiency that caused me a cascade of conditions from which periodontis ( 5 mm deep with probe, plenty of pockets, unexplained cavities, gum recession etc...). Thanks to a 13 years consistent treatment ( sort of curettage and tetracycline) im now in remission.
    Doctor, whats your taughts ?

If you have gum disease but your periodontist says your pocket is getting smaller, is it worth to keep having periodontist surgery over and over to keep the teeth from getting worst or just get the tooth pulled. Periodontist visit can be £250 a visit in London and the treatment is for life - is it worth it?

try to see if you can see the hygienist/therapist in the periodontist's practice. That way you get the maintenance therapy you need at a reduced rate. Hope this works for you but please carry on with maintenance therapy

thank you for your suggestion. We will put it on our list of videos to make. It is likely to take a over 6 months because I suspect most patients will not want to see a video of live surgery. Therefore we are going to need to animate it and animation takes a very long time.

      @londondentalspecialists  6 месяцев назад +4

Sorry I did not see this message. Although I cannot give concrete advice without meeting you, I suspect that you need periodontal surgery as a waterpik is highly unlikely to treat a 7mm pocket properly. I would recommend that you seek the opinion of your local periodontist. If you are in London (or home counties), we would love to see you. Please either call 02072897792 or complete the short form on this webpage and we will contact you london-dental-specialists.co.uk/gum-disease/

    • @londondentalspecialists

90% Patients at London Dental Specialists (who come for maintenance visits) only have deep cleaning (to treat unstable disease) once. This is a small minority that may have it twice but there would have to be a clear reason. If deep cleaning does not work, a surgical treatment (many options) will work. Is there something that will help dissolve the plaque while you're waiting to be treated by the periodontist?

    • @AmyVonderBrink-dd8kq

Battery operated oral B spinning toothbrush and baking soda and water. Walmart has then for 10 to 12 bucks. You should use the brush at a angle around the gum line. This will help get the build up by the gum line off. It takes a while, but it works. I also got a weldental flossed and some xylitol tabs that go into my water pink flossed. Whatever you do don't use hydrogen peroxide on your mouth while your new gum growth is coming back. It will reverse the work that you have done. The water pik really helped tighten up my gums, and my gums were starting to grow back. I just used the oral B battery brush and baking soda mixed with water today. It did a really great job at getting my teeth cleaned. I also got a dental scraping kit at Walmart with the little mirror and a scraper. It has also helped. The little mirror helps me to see so I know what areas I need to focus on better on my inner teeth. I have also been using cool mint listerine, because it is suppose to kill strep . Goodluck

Hello, We are based in Primrose Hill, Central London. The closest underground station is Chalk Farm. It is difficult to provide an estimate of price because I do not know how generalised/severe the disease is. However, the first visit will cost £200 at at this appointment, my dental therapist will examine your mouth, take x-rays and carry out the first cleaning session. She will then let you know how many sessions you need and also let you know if you need to see a periodontist (if the disease is very severe). IF this sounds great to you, please call 07700 100779 and ask them to book an appointment with the hygienist directly.
