9:01 I thought for the longest time that it was ridiculous to make a player make that jump, but then I realized they actually want you to bring a spring from the beginning of the level, and carry it to that spot to make the jump easier
0:49 Fun fact about the stars: If you die 8 times in a row on a level you have a super guide block appear. If this appears at any point, even if you have all 5 stars, the stars lose their sparkle and you can’t get it back.
38:14. That star coin was actually meant to be grabbed by using a star from earlier in the level, just as you used in World 6 Spine coaster level. The spine coaster can be cheesed with an acorn powerup by just full sending it, then using a jump at the end to get up onto the platform. And in W9, that last star coin can be grabbed by juking the Cheep Chomp so that it clears the path. You technically don't *need* any powerups to get any star coins, though it is easier.
I actually did that when I was little. Because I thought. You couldn't get out there and then I eventually figured out you could just wall jump up to there
Screw 9-7 honestly. That level was pure HELL and SUFFERING... The only way I even got a solid chance at beating the level and collecting all 3 of it's Star Coins was by using the penguin suit and the super star. I only 100% completed that level in one go because I REFUSED to play through such a sadistic level again (Also, I LOVE World 8's theme in Wii, my favorite theme in the NSMB series)
The penguin suit is the most versatile power up in my opinion. Here’s the things it can do: 1. It allows you to slide on most surfaces, INCLUDING WATER 2. It gives you the ability to ignore ice physics 3. It’s basically an ice flower And 4. it makes swimming a lot easier
just for the sake of data integrity, i would like to see if like a year from now you can revisit this concept and play the games in reverse order, and then scale the second results so that you have the same magnitude of deaths, and average the two together, so that your skill growth won't be a major factor in the data collection. i haven't watched the video yet, i paused at 2:00 to write this, but i am already predicting that there's going to be some bias for the earlier games being perceived as harder because this endeavor of 100%ing every game in the series basically guarantees that you're going to get at least a little better at not dying in these games over that time period.
The Wii version is also the first one I played. While 9-7 was the hardest level overall for me too, the last star coin I had missing was the second one in 9-4. At first I had little confidence in my wall jumping abilities, so I tried the possibly impossible task of getting it with a propeller suit. As I was doing this once, I took damage and then miraculously wall jumped back onto the platform, and finished the level. That was a great day that I still remember.
oh god this is personal and way tmi but when you got to new super mario bros wii it gave me a flashback memory of my cousin who passed a few months ago. she wasn’t too much of a gamer but she had a Wii cause everyone did and ended up 100%ing it with a friend and was super proud and would tell everyone. Think it made her more proud because she didn’t really play many games. I’m excited to watch and get impressed by her
At this point we'll need a "the mental state of the legend of Kai" video soon, my man's is unreal for being able to do this. Can't tell if it's stubborn a masochist or just unbreakable will but my man's doesn't give up
Blows my mind that the first New Super Mario Bros is old enough to go to war now, 18. I think Wii is my favorite game of the New series. Fun levels, fair amount of challenge towards the end, etc. Though that may be nostalgia, as it came out when I was 13 and first started to pay attention to new games coming out. I remember the unveil of that and Mario Galaxy 2 from E3. How is that 15 years ago? Time sure flies… Anyway, great video!
I don't like that you can die after collecting a big coin. Means you can just sacrifice a life to get the coins in dangerous places. Example being a coin in a pit. Just jump down and die. You'll still have the coin.
It doesn't say "New" on it... but that can't fool me, the game is a new super mario bros game, just with a lot more style pumped into it, and I won't be convinced otherwise. Might as well not count Luigi U if the title is all you care about.
The only one of these I did was New Super Luigi U, because the Wii U version had an easter egg where if you held down the trigger buttons when entering a level, it'd make you play as Nabbit, who is invincible to all enemies. That made it way easier- although the platforming is still pretty challenging.
It's actually just barely possible to do the jump at 10:13 without a mini mushroom if you time your wall jumps perfectly, but you have to do a LOT of perfect wall jumps (I learned that the hard way)
10:13 I learned this just by screwing around for 30 minutes, but if you get a good jump off the dry bones and *perfectly* time a wall jump, you can get the star coin without being mini-Mario. Alternatively you can strafe jump and go up and around the ledge above where the dry bones walks.
10:14 you don’t actually need a mini mushroom for that star coin. Just take out the dry bones and get a running start and you can pretty easily wall jump up to the pipe :)
this video made me realise not everyone was a perfectionist like i was when i was younger . cus the two new super mario games i had access too (wii and wii u ones) i refused to be finished with them until i had ALL those stars on my file. I think i also 100% NSMB 2, but i can’t remember. i’d have to check my old 3DS
I used to play NSMB on DS when u was younger, like 10-12 or something, trying to collect every star. Even now, i think i only miss one, and it's the one you need to use mini mario in the spider level in world 8, I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one who hates that level !
47:41 the 100 second time limit is also, notably, real seconds whereas the timer in the base game counts down a bit faster. In the base game, 300 seconds is 400 “timer units” - so 0.75 seconds per tick. It’s still a lot shorter though, as if each level in the base game started at ~133 “seconds”
this game series is a month younger than me. i have a special connection with them, but especially ds and wii, absolutely great games. both of their soundtracks are extremely memorable and they're awesome
Another interesting thing to point out would be how easy are the games to beat without 100%ing them. For some of these games, it seemed like the game only truely got difficult once you did the post game star world levels
For the Pokey and Petey Piranha bosses, you could’ve saved the Mini Mushroomon your item box until it was the 3rd hit and then click it. You can even Ground Pound bosses and that counts as Jumping on bosses 2 times for 1 Ground Pound unless you’re Mini Mario.
10:08 For 6-Tower you actually don't need the Mini Mushroom at all. That's probably the "intended" way, but you can totally time a bunch of wall jumps to get to the upper platform.
As someone who _has_ gotten all 5 shining golden stars on my NSMB2 file, the words "NSMB 100%" give me war flashbacks. Actually, the words "final Moon Coin" give me war flashbacks. Edit: Also, a pro tip I remember about Mini Mario platforming in the original NSMB: To help yourself make more precise landings, you can ground-pound onto platforms. In cases where you want to land more quickly, you should do the ground-pound while you're still rising upwards in your jump, timing it to just after you've risen above the platform you want to land on. And on the topic of advice, is it just me, or did you never actually do any air-spins in NSMB Wii (without having a propeller)? Air-spins are the single greatest form of control in that game, since they can not only give you more horizontal reach on a longer jump, but can also be used to kill your air momentum for better precision when landing. Beating the game without making use of them is impressive, I'll give you that, but also utterly masochistic.
Don't you think the numbers will be skewed by the fact that playing these games back to back has probably made you a better player throughout it? For example, you likely died in nsmbDS as many times as you did because it was the first game you played in those 2 weeks. If you beat it as the last one then you probably would've died less times. As another example, you would've likely died more times in luigi U had you played that one before nsmbu, thus maybe putting it even above nsmbwii, which means that the order of the games is also a factor that cannot be ignored in my opinion. Still, this was a very entertaining video!
I knew as soon as he admitted to any difficulty at all with the DS game that involved anything other than the block snakes that the Wii game was going to eat him alive. I found the 3DS game harder to 100%. The 3DS game hid its coins and exits better, and made you play cannon stages.
6-tower1, you don't need the mini mushroom, if you time it correctly you can reach 3rd star coin with regular items. Before anyone gets aggressive yes i have done this exact jump infront of new players who can't do this jump.
This was an awesome review of each game's difficulty. My experience with each one was similar but a little different. I can't recall my death counts off hand but here is my ranking from easiest to hardest... 5.) New Super Mario Bros. 2 4.) New Super Mario Bros. DS 3.) New Super Mario Bros. U 2.) New Super Mario Bros. Wii 1.) New Super Luigi U The Wii and U games were actually pretty close to me in terms of difficulty. I found World 6 to be harder in U but found World 8 to be slightly easier. Star Road in Mario U though kicked my as* and I found it harder than Star Road in Wii. However, if you count the Challenge Mode at the end of Mario U, then I actually might place Mario U at a higher difficulty than Wii. But I'm not counting those here. I won't talk about Luigi U. Either I sucked at it, or the game is much harder than Mario U.
I would have to agree with your ranking overall. I remember new super mario bros Wii being quite hard in some places, and not just in world 9. And on the other side of things, the original on the DS was rather easy. The only gripe I have about it is having to exit levels to go somewhere else and obtain a powerup you need in order to access a star coin or secret exit because said powerup is not provided in the level. But that doesn't make the game harder, it's just time consuming and annoying. I never played 2 and U very much but from what little experience I have I can say both are pretty easy as well.
To be fair, World 7 in New Super Mario Bros. DS does have those Green Paratroopas that hop and hunt you down, no matter how you want to survive. As for World 7 in Wii, Ludwig exists, and I had a hard time fighting him first time, because his projectile homes in on you. And I just hate Ludwig with the white-hot passion of…anything as hot as the sun! And don’t get me started on Rock Candy Mines-7. I had to sacrifice Luigi, and thought it was worth it.
I’ve just 100% every NSMB game today and this popped up on my feed. Honestly, these games are great, bland for sure by the end of it with the world themes and such but still fun as hell to complete. I 100% NSMB U Deluxe back in like 2018 on my switch as well as NSLB U. Then SMB Wonder (not that this is in the NSMB series but it was a blast to 100%) when it came out last year. Then earlier this year, I 100% NSMB DS and then the rom hack, ‘Newer’ Super Mario Bros DS (better than all of the NSMB series imo, and harder but much more fun to complete having actual new world themes and mechanics, genuinely an amazing game everyone should play). Then NSMB 2. And finally NSMB Wii literally today. Next and final finally, I’ll be 100%ing Newer Super Mario Bros Wii pretty soon and that will be my final goodbye to the series. Even if 2 of the games aren’t made by Nintendo, they are still worthy of being apart of it imo. Gonna be bittersweet to finally have gotten everything out of every NSMB game as well as the 2 rom hacks.
That star level you only died 6-7 times i honestly think I died over a hundred easily but this was my first new super mario bros experience i absolutely smashed Luigi bros straight away after playing the mario version
The only thing I remember from NSMB Wii is that I was stuck at the zebra level in world 3 for ages in primary school. That is leading me to belibe that thus game is the hardes of the series till this day.
I love every NSMB game, DS, Wii, 2, U and Luigi U, I love them all and always have a blast playing through them, NSMB2 is probably my favorite because, Im really bad at 2D mario and because of the constant coin collecting I can have tons of lives which makes the game more fun for me. Wii is probably my least favorite because of all the levels feel too open and the motion control gimic gets forced into some levels which I dont like as much, Its not a bad game by any means, I still love it, The propeller Mushroom is super fun to use and have a lot of fun with it but I like the others better. My second favorite is DS because of how creative it is and I love the blue shell, I wish they would bring it back. Third favorite is NSMBU because I just really enjoyed the levels there isn’t any motion gimics or anything its just fun 2D Mario (I have only played the Switch version) Luigi is also fun when I can be patient but cause Im kinda bad at 2D mario its really difficult for me.
10:28 I actually made it up there without a mini mushroom because I didn’t think to use one but I knew I didn’t do it right because it was extremely difficult to wall jump like 40 times consecutively to gradually make it up🥲
Honestly yeah the rankings is honestly how I feel about these games in difficultly like if a 11 year old me who could beat nsmb2 in 1 day while a 13 year old me takes a week to complete nsmbu while me right now can't seem to find every star coin in nsmbds and hasn't beaten nsmbwii since I was 7 with family to only finishing it now tells you the difficultly you need to know.
I always find it a little funny that most people find new super Luigi U. Harder than new super Mario bros U., in my opinion Luigi U. is way easier, because the levels are way shorter due to the limited time.
9:02 When I was littler, I thought the jump up there was normally impossible, so I got a spring from earlier in the level and put it on top of the block after an annoying struggle.
I will say that new super mario bros 2. Is probably the easiest of the series. But I do really like someone with a level designs. Like one level you go through. Trying to outrun a giant boo. And then another you're also a tiny Mario trying to beat the entire level. As small. And I also like how the experiment with the backgrounds a bit more too. Like World 4 . They actually change up the backgrounds quite a bit It looks like something from super mario world
Yeah completed NSMBWii for myself. And yeah, 9-7 is a massive pain in the butt. If I could give any advice to someone wanted to complete that game. Don’t go for all 3 Star Coins at the same time. Go for the first two Star Coins, then complete the level and then go for the third. Getting the third star coin will require a bunch of tries, and it will go by faster, as well as be much easier to get back to that point if you get the other two permanently saved first. And after getting the second star coin the level is still hard to complete, but it should only take a few attempts to finish it.
6:04 can't you just carry a mini mushroom into the second slot on the bottom screen and use it after you defeat the boss? It's been like 15 years or more but i feel like i didn't have to fight the boss as mini Mario to make the world transition like you mention
In the new super Mario bros DS world 6 tower 1 level with all the skewers you don’t need a mini mush to get the star coin. You can jump off the dry bones head to get enough height to wall jump back and forth a couple times and you can make it on top of the ledge to get in the pipe.
9:01 I thought for the longest time that it was ridiculous to make a player make that jump, but then I realized they actually want you to bring a spring from the beginning of the level, and carry it to that spot to make the jump easier
Ain't nobody doing that 😂

However, if you count the Challenge Mode at the end of Mario U, then I actually might place Mario U at a higher difficulty than Wii. But I'm not counting those here.
I won't talk about Luigi U. Either I sucked at it, or the game is much harder than Mario U.
As bad as some of those deaths were, at least you never got a game over.
35:23 Which level is this? I wanna know for when I go 100% nsmb2
as far as i know this isnt a sub series but the main series
I would have to agree with your ranking overall. I remember new super mario bros Wii being quite hard in some places, and not just in world 9. And on the other side of things, the original on the DS was rather easy. The only gripe I have about it is having to exit levels to go somewhere else and obtain a powerup you need in order to access a star coin or secret exit because said powerup is not provided in the level. But that doesn't make the game harder, it's just time consuming and annoying. I never played 2 and U very much but from what little experience I have I can say both are pretty easy as well.
This is cool but begs the question if we can include Wonder in this series or is it on its go.
As a confirmed bot, I can confirm that Luigi bros it annoying as hell
if u think 600 deaths is hell youve never played geometry dash
Don't even get me started 😂😂😂
Yeah but deaths in GD are less punishing and are quicker
@@schaffs2 As a gd player, thank you for saying this. Everybody always overlooks this fact for some reason lol

I share your pain on those para beetle levels
9:52 you can see the cut off point for the bottom skewer, i never noticed that

Third favorite is NSMBU because I just really enjoyed the levels there isn’t any motion gimics or anything its just fun 2D Mario (I have only played the Switch version)
Luigi is also fun when I can be patient but cause Im kinda bad at 2D mario its really difficult for me.
when i was young i managed to finish all of super mario bros on the ds without dying consistenly
"*didnt mean to moan" threw me 😭
Here the time for the moan 🤨 25:38
10:28 I actually made it up there without a mini mushroom because I didn’t think to use one but I knew I didn’t do it right because it was extremely difficult to wall jump like 40 times consecutively to gradually make it up🥲
The bonus challenge things in NSMBU are hell and I’ve been slowly chipping away at them for the past year or so
In the first castle of world 6 on mario bros ds, you don't actually need a mini mushroom, you can just wall jump normally
0:48 for me, when you play NSMBU, NSMBU DX and NSMB2 that's not true 100%, but i get what you are trying to do
I always find it a little funny that most people find new super Luigi U. Harder than new super Mario bros U., in my opinion Luigi U. is way easier, because the levels are way shorter due to the limited time.
22:34 it's okay to be bad at a game everyone is different 👍
24:30 world 9-7, the level that haunted my childhood
40:55 looks like we may be just a bit closer to the release with the recent reveal
9:02
When I was littler, I thought the jump up there was normally impossible, so I got a spring from earlier in the level and put it on top of the block after an annoying struggle.
Played some of those with my dad, great memories, even tho i remember dying a looooot (yellow toad here we goooooooooooooo)
45:00 no you don't need any powerups, the fish can destroy the urchins
6:04 can't you just carry a mini mushroom into the second slot on the bottom screen and use it after you defeat the boss? It's been like 15 years or more but i feel like i didn't have to fight the boss as mini Mario to make the world transition like you mention
Tested that just now.
Good idea, but it doesn't work, the spare item gets locked once the boss is defeated
I would choose NSMB U if we’re allowed to include the challenges, getting gold on all of them is the hardest thing I’ll ever do in a Mario game
In the new super Mario bros DS world 6 tower 1 level with all the skewers you don’t need a mini mush to get the star coin. You can jump off the dry bones head to get enough height to wall jump back and forth a couple times and you can make it on top of the ledge to get in the pipe.
51:55 bro said muringoo. You literally come from the country that invented pavlova 😂
