That’s what makes sense and it’s what we thought, so we installed the filters at the water intake coming into the house. Now we have learned that the heating of the hard water actually CAUSES the scale to form. That’s where we made the assumption like you did. Always learning!
@RidgeHavenHomestead we had a tank water heater and hard water. The amount of deposit that would wash out of that thing was incredible. It is a pain but solvable luckily. Good luck and wishing you health and happiness.
@RidgeHavenHomestead our only option at the time was a water softener right as the water entered the house before it went into the water heater or faucets.
Why not just buy a 5 dollar TDS meter and see if you have hard water and how bad it is? Also the spin down filter is a mechanical filter and dissolved solids do not get filtered by this. I would think a water softener is the way to go as it seems you have really hard water. Where i am from you can't put salt into a septic tank (water softener uses the salt to back wash) as there is some debate on the possibility that it can cause harm to the concrete. Also wherever you dump the salt will probably kill plants and grass. I assume you have a septic if you are off grid? Good luck!
Yes, we do have septic, and it’s concrete. You make a good suggestion. Although…because if the scale we do see, it’s pretty evident we have hard water. It would still be nice to have a measurement. Thanks! 😊
You want to catch it as it enters your home. You are on the right track though. 😊

@virginiabirkett4980 thank you
You too.
What did you do to solve the problem?
Softener?

Ok that is what we are considering. Thank you.
need a sediment trap and filter with a iron fighter softner
Iron?
What I’ve read said it’s often calcium and magnesium that form the scale. I’ll also look into iron.
Thanks
Use an old toothbrush to clean out the tiny filter, works better than Q-tips
Oh, yeah. Good idea!

Sounds like if you have hard water dont buy tankless.
It may not be as simple as that. Any water heater will cause the scale to form. It’s the heating of the water that causes the crystals.
