We Got Monetized on YouTube Before the New Year!
🥅 One of my hopes for 2024 was to reach monetization for our off grid homestead channel. My goal was to reach it by or around the New Year for several reasons.
Within the week we have reached that milestone. It feels good. It is an accomplishment and a reward for hard work and perseverance. 🥳
So…HAPPY NEW YEAR’s EVE! And many wishes for a peaceful and happy new year, 2025! 🎉

Tender Tennessee Christmas: Slowing Down On Purpose

From our off grid homestead, I’d like to share a bit about our Christmas Day activities. This year, we spent a low key time with family and no agenda. It was good. It brings to my mind the important things. Family. Time together. Cats. It’s as simple as that. Make time for those things, and you’ll be content. #familytime #christmas2024 #thelittlethings #cats

Thanks so much! It’s fun work!

Thanks!!🙏
Congrats!!!! 🎉🎉 On all the things! Monetizing, saying goodbye to the camper, new steps! I appreciate your regular/consistent content (I enjoy having quality things to listen to when I stitch in the evening and especially content I can comfortably show my kids.) You already know I wasn't interested in monetizing, so let me tell you... as a less than part-time YTer I made $100/year for the last 2 years.
That’s really cool. It’s a little more rewarding than my blog, but I’d love to get back into more writing again. I can’t be full time, as I’ve begun working for my husband’s business (kind of for free right now, lol). I’m really glad to have met you.
@RidgeHavenHomestead Ditto!
Congratulations hun! That is awesome, I am so happy for you. Thank you for all the time you share with us.
Appreciate that! 😊 Happy New Year and thanks for coming by! 😅
Managing power usage is something people on the grid basically NEVER think about. Cloudy days are even more less enjoyable now that we use solar. We do have the option to turn the grid back on when we want to, but we have opted to run the generator instead a few times in the last 4 months. Even if it costs a few pennies more to use propane instead of the grid I'm really irked with how they have altered the grid billing and I basically never want to turn it on again.
I totally get that. And we have friends who went with solar in our town under the impression that they could sell the power back, only to be told that for them, it was not an option. That would be cool to have that revenue, but we are just out here totally apart from it all.
@RidgeHavenHomestead That's likely how we will build our next house.
I hope we never build another house 🏡
@@RidgeHavenHomestead We're dividing off some of our land in 2025 with the intention of building a "dawdy" house on it. Something for the kids to rent as they age up, the inlaws to stay in to be close to us as they age out, and then for us to retire to (if we are still in this world). Plans anyway. Shall see how the year goes.
I have the same rings. I don't use them as often for just that reason.
I’m glad to know it’s not just me!
@RidgeHavenHomestead It's one thing to not seal right away, sometimes you can recook and save the food... but weeks later is no fair!
I love these cases, I have a couple of them.
That’s great. After using this one for several months I’m getting weary of how huge it is. Love the pocket, just not the size. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
Actually the ring is reusable, the lid is not.
Actually, these Harvest Guard plastic lids and seals ARE REUSABLE! they are specifically made for reuse. Up to six times on average if not damaged. They’re great but have a learning curve for me. I’m not giving up, though!
Using Harvest Guard Reusable Canning Lids #offgridliving #offgridhomestead #sustainable ruclips.net/video/y44XKWAlR78/видео.html You can look at this video if you’ve never seen the reusable lids.
Can you reuse the sealing lids? If so how many times?
You may use the lids over and over, as long as they don’t get damaged. So opening the jars carefully is important.
Have you heard of forejars? I haven't gotten to try them (homeless) but many people I'm watching are having amazing luck with them and they are made in the USA. 😊
I have not but I’ll check it out. These Harvest Guard are good, but I myself have a learning curve for them. I do like the reusable idea.
It's true. Better to toss than to risk, especially with beans. Botulism isn't worth it.
True. Just sad about the work lost. ☹️
Always smiling 🎉
Some days I cry! 😭 Some days I smile! 😊 Better to smile! 😀
Lovely relaxing video, and great tip about rolling in sugar! Thank you. :)
Aww…thanks. They are delicious and disappearing fast!
Hi There, Your content is fantastic, and it's clear you’re offering real value to your viewers! But after reviewing your channel, I noticed some areas where small improvements could make a big difference. With RUclips’s ever-changing algorithms, standing out and reaching the right audience can feel overwhelming.💡 I’d love to share some specific suggestions with you. 💡 If you’re interested, let’s schedule a quick 10-minute call tomorrow! ⏰ Looking forward to connecting! 😊
Thank you.
❤
Thankfully there are sunny days mixed in between the cloudy days! Do sunny days make you smile a bit brighter?
Sometimes you just need days of nothing in order to appreciate and enjoy all the surroundings you work so hard to create and maintain. When we sit in a chair outside and just watch the trees and listen to the birds I always end up expressing thankfulness for the little peace of heaven we get to enjoy after decades of pressing toward it. Because of everyone else's schedules we ended up packing 4 gatherings into 1 day this year (all within 5 minutes of each other). I was tempted to complain, but realized we won't always have that many people around to accommodate for. It ended up being a very fun day, but it is a little downer the day after knowing the seasonal fun is over.
That sounds super busy! Probably a blast but tiring too!
We have been sharing these cookies with friends and the reports are super positive! It means something for “tough guys” to compliment your gingerbread cookies! 😊
We still have our “main” Christmas get-together. I’m kind of glad we get to extend our Christmas season. 😊
That was a relaxing visit in your kitchen. I almost bought a box mix for this cookie at Trader Joe's yesterday. I forgot about it altogether, but now that I saw the recipe I will probably make these with my girls tomorrow. Thanks!
They are super easy. I would like to try them with carob and less sugar. That’s on my “someday” soon list.
@RidgeHavenHomestead I generally to 50-75% of the amount of sugar a recipe calls. More eating, less guilt. 😄
For myself-absolutely! I sub some stevia usually. This was my first time baking these, so I followed the recipe, but I rarely add all that sugar!!!
Thai was my first time making these cookies. They are vegan, and our whole family gave two thumbs up! 👍 👍
If you hang small mirrors or pictures with a lot of white in them under the lights it will make a big difference. A 5 watt led can light a mid size room, also having mirrors or white /light colored things on each wall will allow the light to be more efficient. As a young and dumb guy . Years ago I painted a small room black. A 100 watt bulb was not enough to see to tie a shoe, when it was white, a 40 watt bulb was too bright! Instead of having a single 60 watt replacement led bulb, maybe use 3, 20 watt bulbs for example, spread out a dimmer light. A mirror under it can light a room. Maybe make a picture using reflective white stickers, and paint a picture over it or something to have a artistic way of reflecting light, to be more efficient with power and the light..
These are some ideas that are not conventional, but are practical. I like thinking outside the box! Thank you so much! 😊
I use to always give truth brushes. Plus I may gift them again with my tradition cabin socks.
I love the socks idea. 🧦
@RidgeHavenHomestead I've done this since they were little and they honestly look forward to it.
I would get a small diesel engine. And a pma alternator, use used vegetable oil as fuel. And a midnite classic charge controller. To charge the battery with up to 150 vdc input and maybe 80 amps output output, at 48-60 volts is a fair amount of power, near 5kw? without doing any math.
Curious why the diesel engine? So collect the used restaurant vegetable oil? That’s a different approach, but, like I said, I like thinking outside of the box. 📦
Bless you and your family this holiday season and beyond.
That means so much to us! God bless you and your family too! ❤️
I live at 4300" in Eastern Oregon and just set up a small emergency solar system. Our electricity is so inexpensive it doesn't pay to go full solar. I'm learning as much as I can from folks like yourself on RUclips. It is cold here and on a bright sunny day my 800w system can produce around 900w. We get a lot of sunny days but the sun is so low we only get about 2 hours of full sun. Thanks for the video. This the first I have watched. I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed.
I appreciate that! Sharing your experience and helping the little guys like us makes a big difference!
The people who use diesel heaters have found that there is at least 1Kw available as waste heat from the exhaust pipe. You could probably look into recovering heat from the generator exhaust and use it for water or space heating. The BIG problem with generators for battery charging is that the generator may be rated at 2 or 5Kw but the charger is probably only rated at 500w so there is a big generator making very little electricity.
Yeah, Greg was just telling me that we need to look into something (which he named) that uses the gas more effectively and is “cleaner”. Would be less waste that way. You are right. We just can’t use the capacity that the generator states we can. And we definitely need to get our issue with the charging squared away.
I believe that is an issue that is not addressed in many solar systems. We may have a large amp solar charge controller which is great when you have sun. A person also needs the largest lithium battery charger they can afford. When running a generator and there is no sun the extra energy produced can charge the battery bank as rapidly as possible.
Beautiful, thank you for sharing 🥰
Happy to share
We used to do stockings, but as we've gotten older, we don't. But what we do is on Christmas eve when we have supper all together we put a wrapped package on each person's plate. They are opened oldest to youngest and even though this is a tradition my x sister-in-laws family did, we like it so do it as well. It's just something different.
That sounds special. We used to go to my Grandma’s and we could open one gift Christmas Eve. Fun for the kids.
What about getting a solar generator? We really love ours. You could charge it up on a sunny day and use it for extras. Like if you want to leave the tree lights on? You could get a small ouoes that's really affordable. Or like us we got a Rockwell a few years ago while we were still on grid to keep our fridge running when we were out of power.
What’s great suggestion! I’ve heard of solar generators, but don’t know much about them. I’ll be talking to my husband about that. Thanks! ☺️
My guess is that since you already have panels & an inverter that a solar generator wouldnt do anything more for you than simply buying more batteries for storage. That's just my guess though. Didnt ask my hubs. 😊
I think you’re right. Didn’t necessarily think about that, but yeah, it would be redundant. Although a solar generator would be a smaller thing to charge and do it faster, so it may work in smaller applications.
The cabin is SO gorgeous especially with all the lights! We don't do Christmas anymore but when we did it was much like yours a collection of random ornaments and I always let the kids decorate it so it was jumble mess, but they always loved it way more than an organize matchy tree. I hope you have a blessed holiday.
You too! Thank you for your kind words!
your home is so beautiful! ✨
Thank you! We have worked hard for it, and every board and nail-we’ve done it ourselves! Not done yet, but it feels good to sit and enjoy it sometimes!
This time of year is the worst, a cloudy day your array will produce 8 to 10% of rated max. Now it is generator season, 36 hours so far. I only have electric heat but since it's so warm this year I discharge 8kw a day. I went with propane gen, fill 2 times a year, soon I will get a larger tank fill once every 2 years.
You know the drill. The steady drone of the generator in the background. Thankful we have one!
@@RidgeHavenHomestead I had a 5kw to start now back up, then went to 9kw on LPG but I should have got a 13kw to max out the charge at 10kw. Now I charge 5kw and use 2kw for extra heaters keeps the gen at a steady 60.3 hrz, heat not needed but nice to walk around in a t shirt for 6 hours.
I have red cranberry like beads if you like. Glad to share. Let me know if you are interested.
Oh, yes! That’s would be really nice! Thank you so much! 😊
@@RidgeHavenHomestead how would you like to connect?
What family Christmas traditions bring a smile to your face? 😊
But then you have to seal it everytime you open the jar to use it. I won’t be getting a vacuum sealer lol. It’s a waste
I think that if you’re going to be using whatever is inside the jar regularly, you’re right. There’s no point in vacuum sealing it. But if you want something for long term? It can be a good option. I don’t seal every jar on my shelf for the reason you stated, lol! 😆
The skills and opportunities you have provided for your boys will be with them for life. I love your phrase "the redhead on the ridge".
Thank you! A couple of my friends suggested I change my channel to that. 👩🦰
Loved watching the journey and glad to hear your likes. Can't wait to spring and see the gardens again
Me too! Everything is pretty gray outside these days. You settling in for the Winter?
@@RidgeHavenHomestead Yes, going to stay at the town house at least until Mar 1st. We finally got the roof on the tiny cabin but still a lot of work and right now we are dealing with all this mud!
Mud is right! And it reminds me of my grandparents in ND when my dad told about how they’d all stay in town for the Winter and head out to the farm the other months.
