If students can see bullying, how can't the faculty?
There's a great line about this in CS Lewis' "The Silver Chair" about the headmaster of a modern (experimental in the 1950's) school:
"These people had the idea that boys and with Jill Pole & Eustace Scrubbsgirls should be allowed to do what they liked. And unfortunately what ten or fifteen of the biggest boys and girls liked best was bullying the others. All sorts of things, horrid things, went on which at an ordinary school would have been found out and stopped in half a term; but at this school they weren’t. Or even if they were, the people who did them were not expelled or punished. The Head[master] said they were interesting psychological cases and sent for them and talked to them for hours. I got bullied almost every day for being chubby, sometimes cried before school. My father gave me strength with his worlds to get past the tears and I feel now It taught me resilience. I don’t feel like a victim and know that the kids that bullied me are the real ones that were un happy individuals and probably still are today.

Being isolated during your adolescent years can cause severe damage, especially for guys. Not everyone reacts the same, but it can absolutely destroy your perception of the world. God help our society.

@AriellaSurfgirl of course it's not just guys. There's an epidemic of loneliness and isolation in our society right now, caused by massive changes in our society like social media. This epidemic effects young people, particularly young men, very disproportionately though. We need to recognize that if we're gonna do something about it, but it doesn't mean older people and women don't suffer from it too.

Though they may off ppl they know. Luckily none of my late friends hurt anyone but themselves if that is lucky cause they still felt they had no other choice at that time. Plus I see ppl asking for help and there is none. Ppl say speak up but if someone does nobody listens. My best friend I was the only one took her seriously she’s tried and didn’t succeed a few times ppl acted like it was just for attention yes she needed help. I had a feeling to call her that night and I didn’t cause I was going through something & didn’t want to bother her with it well she shot herself. @AriellaSurfgirl I'm so sorry for your loss. Again I'm not saying the epidemic of loneliness and isolation is just affecting men, but men have a higher suicide rate than women. They always have but the amount of men committing suicide has increased more than the amount of women committing suicide. It's okay to acknowledge that young men are being affected the worst by this problem, it doesn't make what happened to your friend any less tragic or important. Rest in peace and God bless.
It's only going to get worse with social media no one knows how to act around people anymore and more and more young men are becoming isolated which is not a good thing.

Quiet kids that don't have friends tend to be targeted for bullying. Sadly, this happens in nature, too. Humans have not evolved as much as we would like to say. I was a loner & was terribly bullied for not wearing the right clothing (my family was poor) and being fat. When my son went to school, he was also quiet & an introvert. I made sure that he wore clothing that didn't put a target on his back. Nothing fancy (deep searches at the Goodwill), but that made him fit in. I also made sure to reach out to other parents & secure playdates, so that he made friends early on w/ kids that had similar interests. This helped so much. We as parents have to do our part to help our kids navigate those tough early years.
The thing is this....quiet kids are often in not good homes.
Wow…I don’t even think you know the full extent to which you helped your son. Interacting with other children your age is so so important especially in early childhood and especially now many parents neglect to take action on the part of their kids when they are too young to do so. Good on you for being proactive and not letting your son fall into the same situation you were unfortunately in during your adolescence. God bless you and your son. 🙏
God bless you for protecting your child. Alot of parents are not proactive. My father would not tolerate me and my siblings being bullied. But now your parents can't confront these people without it being a potential problem. Your way was proactive and non- confrontational. Which is a better way for today's kids.

@@erincoco612I was quiet from the 6th-10th grade and I was in a good home. I just had social anxiety that I finally worked my way out of during my Junior year. It was definitely a personal thing for me. Some quiet people are just built like that, I’m just glad I grew out of it.

My wife went to high school with a very nice but poor and very quiet young man who was bullied by not just students but one particular teacher as well. My wife’s younger sister was bullied as well because of a disability so she understood and always tried to be his friend. One day he wasn’t in school and they found out later he had hung himself.

@@davidrios3372 Depends on the sort of bullying people go through, but it can effect people deeply when they are at such a crucial stage of psychological development.
It's not much different from kids who grew up dealing with abusive parents. Kids who were beaten by their parents tend to have those psychological scars well into adulthood. Same thing goes for kids who get beaten relentlessly by their peers growing up in school.

I was bullied from first grade until high school for different reasons.
I was one of five white people in an all Mexican school in Nogales Arizona on the border of Sonora Mexico.
I was made fun of every day by students and teachers.
In middle grade, I was bullied by girls because by 5th grade I was already in a C cup, and got abused, harassed, made fun of, ostracized, blackballed, etc by everyone in that school, and into high school.
I was bullied because my mom was extremely obese, and my stepdad was black, we were all so very poor, and I always wore a lot of the same clothes almost everyday.
Not once did I ever entertain the thought of sniping out anybody because of it.

Thank you for sharing. So true. Too many people these days are looking to find a reason why someone acted in a horrific manner. Often times we hear the same story, "He was a loner, bullied, and was sort of different." That all may be true, but we can't assume that being bullied equates to mass shootings, assassination attempts, etc. There are lots of people who have difficult, abusive, etc, backgrounds and do NOT do what this dude did. I worked in law enforcement for 26 years and got tired of hearing, "But sir, I grew up in the hood, that's why I gang bang..." My response, "There are way more kids growing up in the same hood and NOT gang banging, that's an excuse!" Again, thanks for sharing and God bless.
Sometimes Mexicans can be a piece of garbage. I'm Mexican and even I've been bullied by Mexicans cause the way I dress like or because my parents don't have enough money to buy me the latest phone on the market or that kinda fancy stuff. Exactly! I was bullied almost every day growing up. I never ate lunch in Jr High and High school. I was the kid hiding out in the library or outside. As an adult who has raised a family and has grandchildren, I still get bullied at work. There are always those that have to pick on others.
People can be mean and cruel, but that is no excuse to ever k**l others. I've never once thought about doing harm to others. Bullying sucks, but shouldn't be used as an excuse for horrendous behavior and actions!

I went to High School with a very tough guy, involved with the Mob and he had his flock of friends. These friends enforced a no bully rule. The school I went to was for smart kids, private school.. Nobody got bullied, none of the geeky kids, drama kids... everyone was safe unless you tried to bully anyone. It was surreal but imagine a school where people who you would think were bullies/// prevented it. There was never a day anyone worried about bullies

I thought the same thing. He has the school bully look and the guy that got shot has the exact bullied kid in the movie look. Also, he has a slight smirk when he's talking about it. He has a smile on his face when he says "its kind of sad" as well which is something which really makes you not trust what he says because the words and facial expression don't match.

His father was against therapy, meds, and mental health care for his own child (who had major mental health issues went untreated) That is child abuse and could have been a big part in why this happened. And the mother allowed the father to do so, so she is complicent too.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was bullied every day for being overweight and wearing thick glasses. I was also one of the biggest kids in school so the smaller "tough" kids wanted to show their friends how tough they were by picking fights with me. I dared them to take a swing and nobody ever did. Never had a fight in my life but still.....being bullied every day didn't cause me to want to go shoot anyone. There's got to be more to his story than just being bullied.

I'm in my 60s and bullying was happening all the time. Teachers did nothing then.I was terribly bullied, many of us were. BUT we didn't grow up trying to murder others. We all grew up, had careers, married, raised families by the grace of God. NO excuses for murdering people. I'm tired of the victim hood. Parents wake up. Put away all the phones and talk and enjoy your children.
I was thinking about this also. I got bullied in school by kids and teachers because I was little. Yes, some of the stuff still haunts me but I never thought about acting out like this or any other way destructive.

This Jason Kohler kid was in a 30 minute interview where he literally said verbatim “he was one year up from me. (Graduated a year later) I just found out today I went to high school with him. I don’t know if I went to elementary school with him. I was bullied from first grade to my junior year in highschool when I dropped out because it had gotten to be just to much to handle.

You should watch the Jimmy Kimmel monologue during Covid in which he said that people who go to any emergency, even if they’re having a heartache, should be turned away if they haven’t been “vaccinated.” My doctor, who recommended I get the shot. He didn’t demand it. He didn’t threaten to drop me as a patient. Later, he told me that I was probably right in refusing to do so. I didn’t decide lightly. I researched, talked to other health care providers who left their jobs rather than take something they felt may not be safe, and learned about Ivermectin. One thing I learned was that people in Africa had been taking that “animal” drug for a very long time for diseases like malaria. My husband and daughter chose to get vaccinated. The bullying finally stopped after I talked to two of the mothers. My advice is to do this. I told them that I didn't really want to bring this up, but... One replied with "my daughter (one of the bullies) gets bullied, too!" I said that doesn't make it right for her to bully my daughter. To my knowledge, bullying stopped after that. Parents need to talk to parents. My dad did for my brother in the 1960s.
