- Hugh Jackman briefly explains the circumstances under which Jean Valjean sings the song in Les Miserables before his incredible performance. :)
Hugh Jackman performing at Fayetteville, AR.
Man, this guy is so insanely talented.
I bet if you stopped him on the street today, carrying bags of groceries in his arms, and asked him to sing it, he would still perform at this exact same level.
Hugh Jackman sings great. I love the sound of his voice.
This is why he was and is great in this role. He sings from his heart and soul. It's not about technical skill. Someone could sing it flawlessly but without the heart it would then become a purely a soulless musical exercise. I weep when I hear and watch this.
Mywork777 theatrical version was better ngl
His deep voice gives me a huge touch.
The song describes a change of his emotions very well.
I love to watch this video!
In a motion-picture adaptation it's important to hear the emotion and acting they put in to their singing, which is something that can transform a song from that of a recording artist, to that of an actor. Les Miserables movie cast acts and sings (live) at the same time and they're on the film set, not on stage. The Tony Award winner Jackman won a Golden Globe and got an Oscar nomination as Valjean.
Dude, he sucked in this role compared to those who have set the bar previous to him. Schoenberg and Boublil were so disappointed and ashamed
@@cloudambient Schoenberg was not disappointed, but yes, he was ashamed.
@@mikeor- he was both disappointed and ashamed.
I love this man. When he sings, “To where you are”. I get chills and a warm feeling all over. Love his voice.
As an actor he really did a great job and he really impressed me
Hugh Jackman is so talented. As a actor, singer and the greatest showman!!! . And gorgeous!!!.❤❤❤❤❤
Jean Valjean is one of my favorite Les Mis characters and Hugh's portrayal of Jean Valjean was absolutely superb !
Who am I?
My only clue is Alkali
I came here from the lake I know
I can't remember how long ago
Who am I?
Am I truly one of the X-Men?
Or will I leave and not return again?
This rage that fills in this blank space
Do I dare to confront it's face?
Who am I?
Who am I?
I am LOGAAAAN!
Rouge: are you ok Logan??
How does this not have more views?! Love that he went for the bigger note with "I'm Jean Valjean" unlike the lower register he used in the film. Thanks for sharing this!
2:28 he sheds a tear. Really puts himself in valjeans place. What a great actor.
I think it's actually sweat, those lights are hot as hell. Plus tears don't fly off your face like that lol.
VActorDreamer Lmao @ this comment.
it was probably spit
Saw Hugh in the film. He did a great job as valjean. I hope he would reprise the role on broadway
I loved them both; Hugh & Russel
They are the best actors that could be chosen for the roles in my opinion. Absolutely stunning movie.
Watch the professional show live and you’ll think twice about javert Russell wasn’t any good his singing skill for Broadway wasn’t there and he didn’t put the emotion in that all the other javerts and literally anyone else in the movie did
I get emotional everytime. He's just THAT GREAT
I just love this song so much, and when Hugh sings it it’s simply perfect😍❤️😘😘
Ahahaha "your honor" vs. "Javert."
Your honor is more accurate to the book. Javert returned to M. Sur. M. As soon as he dropped off Champmathieu (the man suspected as Valjean)
They sang live. It made it easier for them to have vocal/dramatic freedom. They wore an ear piece that had a pianist off to the side. I believe it made it more emotional for me as well
Talking about lowered. He is indeed more a baritone than a tenor. Which is why, in my opinion, he can pull off the low notes on 2:00 and 2:14 like crazy. A tenor would be in serious trouble there.
I do like his portrayal of Valjean, both here and in the movie. Maybe not the best singer, others might've done something different with it. But acting-wise I don't think anyone can stand in his shade. You can just tell the total difference between himself and Valjean the second the music starts. I take my hat off to that kind of skill!
Great guy but he is a high bari. This piece has been transposed down by at least a 4th. True tenor role. But who would not want to sleep with him?
I love this song! Hugh sings it and I feel it in my soul!
I like the way he takes a bow at the end.
He's so good!
Words do not describe your brilliance.
ok so yeah, this is SUPPOSED to be higher but like. listen, this is so beautiful as it is hugh does a great job and the low voice is sexy as *hell*
I think he tried to sing Javert and Your honour at the same time
French Version:
He thinks that man is me,
This could be my chance,
I have nothing to do
Other than to remain silent.
But I have struggled for so much
Built and invented everything,
Only to give it up to a stray remorse.
If I stay silent, I am damned
And if I speak, I am condemned
And all those workers who work in the factory
And who believe in me. Can I abandon them?
I would be sending them back to nothing again.
If I stay silent, I am damned.
But if I speak, I am condemned.
What to do? Betray this man damned by error
Let him fall into the depths of misfortune
This innocent who bears my face,
Who goes to judgement in my place,
What to do? Refuse to walk back into hell
Because I created my paradise on Earth,
Cross out my past forevermore
And bask in oblivion evermore,
What to do? To look in the mirror and see
The face of a man who dared not look back.
My soul belongs to God alone,
And none can claim it as his own
If this is a trial God sent to me,
Then it is already decided for me!
What to do? There is nothing to do!
I am Jean Valjean!
Here is the truth at last, Javert,
An innocent was tried in my stead!
Who am I? 24601!
Great val jean
I am glad you enjoyed it! :)
Nicely done. I do agree--he sang this very well here. It would be great if he can somehow be on a full stage musical of this--the film was good, but IMO he would shine more as Valjean on stage.
Better than the movie version.. He sung all the notes and didn't whisper through the low ones
Hooray for Wolverine singing!
Ahhaha! 😊 Go Wolverine!!
How in the world did he not win the Oscar. Daniel was awesome, but Hugh was epicly magnificent
People who study Philosophy be like 2:45
I am going to see him perform in London on 2nd June
Does this guy have any flaws or shortcomings? He's the Australian equivalent of Rob Lowe.
Except he can't do it in the original key....
@@1981gangleymutton say it again. He sucks. Lol.
She is a beautiful man and he had a an AMAZING VOICE!
She? SHE?!
Rov Hållet The muscle, facial hair, and soft voice can be misleading to some!
She? are you stupid?!
Joseph Paredes
I'm sure it was a typo. Relax.
Jean Valjean: who am i?
Deadpool: You're wolverine
Oh my god awesome hugh
Canta muitoooo👏👏👏👏😍
WHO AM I ???!!!
I AM JAVERT
Way better live here then in the movie, whoever the vocal director was for the movie had no idea what they were doing, the actors could have seriously hurt their voices singing the way they were singing.
This guy is way to talented! He can play anyone in a film he can sing he works out he dresses well...TOPLAD
wolverine singing!!! ha!!! Hugh is brilliant!
TRUE that!
whoa I think I had my pants wet.....this is amazing😭😭
He actually is singing in key idiots is called harmony with the piano
0:12 inspector javEEEHH
wow he sounds way different than in the movies honestly he's the only person from Australia I think that can act like an American and also act like a Canadian.
maravilhoso🎶🎵🎼🏁🏃🚶🌹❤🌈
Wtf are you talking about??? His singing is awesome!!!!!
A red squirrel could play him and I’d still say.....Jean Valjean is my favorite character.
He did it better here tbh. Still love the movie and the performances.
who am i? I'M WOLVERINE
It takes him a whole 93 seconds to find the right key and then he remains in it for about one minute...
gillyuk1013 dude, no offense but you don’t know what you’re hearing, he was in key the whole time and he hit every note including the high note, you probably don’t like his tone/timbre and the way he voices his vowels. Which I completely understand, he doesn’t have the prettiest high range, but to say he didn’t remain in key is just ignorant
Wolverine!!!
Like this if you think Hugh Jackman should reprise Valjean on stage!
Amazing is there something that he could not sing?
You are Wolverine
Was this the Ab or the B as the high note?
John Overthinker People involved in the arts.
John Overthinker wow.
By the way, it was B flat.
TheSuperMathemagicia Actually it was Ab seeing that that is the key is in unless the pitch was lowered
I just used an app to measure what it heard. Unless were talking about different high notes.
Good performance but what on earth was that transition between "no more guilt than you" and "who am I"?
맨중에맨 휴잭맨 맞네
Wolverine singing ! :)
If these people don’t stop coughing I’m gonna-
Wolverine goes broadway
Liam
I don't like that this version of the song (and in the 2012 movie) says "If I speak, THEY are condemned" after the line about the workers. It's just my opinion, but I feel like it puts some of the weight of his decision elsewhere instead of simply being a man fighting with his own morality.
Uh... That's in literally every version.
befOoOoOooOreeEeeee
You can tell he was shooting a X men movie, by the wolverine looking beard, maybe days of a future past?
Better than the movie, but even still... so sad. I can name five or six Valjeans who can sing this better -- and in the right key, too.
Crap Wolverine can fricking sing!!! (And so can gladiator)[russel Crowe]
2 4 6 0 1 = to forsake someone
wolverine mode
so this is what wolverine do when he retired
So many sharp notes throughout the song. Nasal voice, too .
You can easily look up YT for different musical singers singing this song (there's even a compilation). Some of them are truly awesome, some others are really good. HJ is mediocre at best. Sorry, but that's the truth. I still love this guy, so I'm not a hater or sg., just someone who won't bow before him just because he sings a song from Les Mis.
He's definitely not the best singer but since he played Valjean in a movie, acting skills are more important than singing skills. All the otger Valjean's I've seen don't show as much emotions as Jackman.
@@darkninja1693 really dude? It's not just a movie. It's a musical movie. Sweeney todd did great in this regard, good acting and good singing
Not a fan of the cocky last note pose, especially since its 3 half-steps lower than it's written...
I would go gay for Hugh Jackman. There, I said it.
Wish he would've sang it in the right key..
TeenageFitness He's singing it in the right key.
+Hannah K Colm Wilkinson sang it in his own unique way with higher notes than what the writers of the original music had intended (they changed the music for Colm, from my understanding). Colm, who actually has a part in the movie musical, Les Miserables, told Hugh Jackman not to imitate his version of Jean Valjean, but rather to sing it in his own way - how it feels right to him. Colm also said he thought Hugh Jackman did a fantastic job. I'll take Colm's word, and even before seeing that interview with Colm, I enjoyed Hugh Jackman's performance in the movie as well as every rendition he has done of Les Miserables songs in live performance. It's different, but still good - in my honest opinion.
+Hannah K In your opinion. The way Hugh sings the songs - it makes it feel more realistic, in my honest opinion, which is best for a movie. It makes me feel like the novel is truly being reenacted and I am feeling the suffering. This is why I quite enjoy his interpretation of the songs. I don't care to get technical with who hits what key. What I care about is how the song makes me feel, and that is all. They all do a good job from Colm to Alfie to Ramin to Hugh Jackman, and nobody will convince me otherwise because I care about what connects with my soul - not little technicalities.
+Hannah K As I already said, I loved Hugh as Valjean - I thought he was perfect. I thought his acting was far superior to any rendition of Valjean I have seen acting wise, and for the sake of the movie, the acting was most important for what they were going for. They wanted it to feel raw and realistic. The director even said this. He didn't want it to sound "pretty". You are not going to convince me to change my opinion, and I am not going to convince you to change yours, so let's respectfully agree to disagree. Good day! :)
+Hannah K I know I said I was done with this conversation, but I have a question since your comments keep showing up in my news feed ... Hanna K, I'm just curious ... why are you so fixated on putting down Hugh Jackman's performance in response to people who obviously loved his performance? Does it make you feel good? There are plenty of actors I don't connect with, but I don't go on videos of them performing and talk about how everyone else is better. Also, I have seen Hugh Jackman perform on Broadway. He is a phenomenal theater actor, and I guarantee you his acting on stage playing Valjean would be no different from what was on camera with multiple takes. He has won a Tony Award, after all. And if someone likes his singing voice, then so be it. Your exaggerated comment that these other guys sing "1000000x" better than him is just evidence that you are so hung up on this that you feel the need to hate.
"And so Yaver..." -_- Although this was better than the movie, it's still not good enough. Sadly :(
Crappy performance (for such a great actor). My dog sings it better. Lets go back to listen the REAL Valjeans (JOJ, Alfie, Gero, Colm, etc).
It's sure that he's not the best singer who played this role, but as an actor he is great. His singing may not be perfect, but it's full of emotion and soul. In the movies, this song and the "Valjean's soliloquy" are so deep that I forget to pay attention to some singing mistakes. He is a movie actor and cinema is different from theatre. I think that for the movie adaptation he is jus perfect!
As much as I love Hugh Jackman, Les Miserable should never be transposed. If you can't sing it, you don't play it
jalidav1 Sorry but there is only one Valjean and that is Colm Wilkinson.
Wesley Rester Why are you apologising?
***** what do you mean?
It would appear so you did my friend. It should be written in stone
I am not knocking his performance, he is amazing. However he shouldn't have played that role. Have you ever seen Jeff Leyton do the part? He is my favourite
He's really bad, sorry
Thelionpaladin Do it better
+asslesschaps420 wouldn't be that hard TBH xd
Wolverine high, singing and shit, go home wolverine
You sound jealous! He was fantastic!!!
