I love the 35mm 1.4 SC. It's permanently glued to my camera. There is a signature red gem like flare when shooting directly into a light source. You have a example photo 5:18 into the video lower right corner. I love the bubble bokeh and it makes the out of focus background look like a painting. It sharpens up nicely past 5.6. Add on a close focus adapter and I have a all around lens. Love it.
Video @ 7:07 "When I guesstimate 40mm" - For the M3 Leica, one can block the middle window of the RF with a piece of 'black' tape. This immediately removes the 'Brightlines' from your viewfinder (of course it still retains the 2nd image focus feature). Now the entire field is 'clear'...
Matt, love your review, I came here because someone recommend me your channel at the Leica forum. I have a Zeiss 35mm f2 and I am sold to the CV 40mm, your samples are very very beautiful 👍🏼👍🏼
I learnt something new-the difference in colour and contrast produced by M.C. and S.C. I had always thought, mistakenly, that M.C. was better than S.C. But as you explained, it really depends on the type of image one is trying to achieve.
Really interesting review, thank you. I have the 40mm SC version and use it on Fuji bodies. I already have some great Fuji portrait lenses, including the 35 and 56, but wanted something to give a different look to black and white portraits. The 40mm SC used with Fuji Acros film simulation gives a wonderful, classic Hollywood portrait look straight out of the camera. I don't shoot film, but the combination of the Nokton 40 SC plus the Fuji film sim makes me feel like a film shooter. 😁
Thanks Greysurfer, I too have a Fuji body and have just bought the 35mm 1.4 SC. I opted for 35mm to give a standard 50mm full frame equivalent field of view. My logic for the SC version is that Fuji have Velvia simulation to give high colour if I need it and of course can be tweaked in post if required and the SC lens will give more muted tones as standard and as you say great monochrome. I hope this logic works out because the lens should arrive today!
I had the 40mm f1.4 for Leica M8 and was fantastic. BTW, as far as I know, in the M6 the 35mm framelines is equivalent truly to a 40mm for "conservative approach" having more space on frames. If you use the 35mm framelines on the M6 with the 40mm you will have perfect match composing at least, a 1m or so (not sure at close range). But you should modify the mount for that.
Hi Red Grave, excellent information from you again, thank you!! Do you know if the same holds true with all later M models and for me particularly for the earlier M4-P? I use my M4Ps more. ..yes I should have mentioned on the M8! Thanks for checking out the video. Matt
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom AFAIK it should be the same with all the 0.72 magnification viewfinders. If you can borrow an M10 you can try it by yourself in an instant (or do a test roll with the M6 and develop yourself). With the M8 I just put a piece of paper in the frame selector for "jamming" the framelines on 35mm and was VERY precise and even more comfortable to look at, thanks to the strange magnification on the M8 VF. You're welcome, pal! ;)
Matt, please review the Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 nokton for the leica M3 vs 50mm summilux vs Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f 1.5. Love your video reviews. Many thanks and keep up the good work.
Hi I can only review lenses I own and use I’m afraid. See the Www.MrLeica.Com blog for a Lux vs Sonnar review (from when I owned the Sonnar*)..on the Leica tab there is a list of lenses I use. Thanks for suggestion.
I know bro ! I watch your content as soon as it’s released. Gave you a like 👍.... comments coming soon. I want the 58mm voightlander. That 20mm looks amazing. Great job as usual ! A request for you....can you do a full episode on the 58mm ? It’s been on my radar for a while. I just have way too many 50’s and 58’s but looking for the one to rule them all. I’m thinking it’s that voightlander. Just gotta say you’re mad cool. I really enjoy your work and the shots you share. You got skills my man
@@johndaubney7311 yes give me some months to refresh myself on the 58mm and maybe I can put a specific video together for it next year. Thanks for your kinds words! I don't think I've been called cool before haha

Question Matt: Would the 40mm ViewFinder be useless with the M8? I imagine the 40mm VF would be full frame 40…would i be better off just using the 50mm frame lines in the M8?
Thanks for this comparison, just what I was looking for! I'm actually in the process of doing some measurements and test shots of how the Nokton 40/1.4 compares to the 35mm framelines on my newly acquired Leica M4-P, whether it works like that or if I'd rather switch to the 35/1.4. I don't like the guesstimating part, but from what I read online the difference should be minor. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for sharing! It will be interesting to hear your results. I have M4-P cameras too, great cameras. Yes I'm not a fan of guessing either. Good luck!
Great review! I was wondering if you’ve used either on the digital Leica CL? I just bought mine with the 18mm lens and while that lens is nice I think I want a longer focal length but don’t have the budget for another Leica lens. trying to decide which one would be the best with the 1.5x crop. Thank you for your time!
Hi Tyler, my apologies for missing this. Yes these lenses are fine on the CL (I use that camera with pretty much every lens!) Great camera. FL is personal preference, if you like 50mm then get 35mm if that makes sense.
I own a version II copy of the Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 MC. Fantastic lens! That said, I think the newer 40mm f/1.2 would be a great match for the digital Leica CL.
HI Sean thanks! Yes if I didn't already have the 35mm f1.2 ASPH ( see here - ruclips.net/video/ENRLCBe1oVI/видео.html ) I would be very tempted by the 40/1.2. (I still am ha but that's my excuse for now for not buying!) :)
Hey Matt, you might be interested in that: I have just tested this new f 1.5 in its V. 2 (aluminum) against the Summicron 35 K. of Bokeh, Summicron 35 ASPH. (V. 1), TTartisan 35 MM f1.4, Voigt 35 mm f 1.2 V.III, and Voigt 35 mm Lanthar (f.2). [test with M10 mono] The results are t f2 are in terms of shares tested in the very corners : 1-Voigt Lanthar, 2-Voigt f 1.5, 3-Voigt f 1.2 V. III, 4-Summicron ASPH (close though), 5-Summicron Bokeh (slightly softer in the corners but sort of holding on in spite of its age), 6-TTartisan (very soft corners). Even at f. 1.5 and with its compactness this lens competes with the Summicron ASPH at f. 2. Great lens!! My only regret is that Voigtlander removed the small physical red dot/dome on the lens itself which was present on the previous lenses.
Hi Jesse, i'm sure it would! I use it on crop bodies (M8 and CL but i've not tried M4/3 recently). I used it a lot on M4/3 in the past but I did mostly macro then.
Thanks Chris! Yes the blog has 7 years of reviews on it so most things covered to some degree! :) This might help you until I get chance to make a scanning video - mrleica.com/film-negatives-to-digital-workflow/
Great review, Matt! I owned the 35mm 1.7 and really regrett selling it. On my Fujifilm X-Pro1, which was converted to a monochrome camera at MaxMax ( by removing the color filter on the sensor), I got the most amazing B&W photos that I never seem to replicate with any lens I've tried since. Would be great to see a review of that lens!
Thanks Ray! Interesting to here about your conversion. Sounds cool! I don't have the 35/1.7 i'm afraid but if I ever do get it I will review no problem :)
thanks for the review, you made a great job. I've already watched almost all your videos and didn't find the review about voigtlander ultron 35mm f2. You find this lens not interesting for your purpose or just planning to review it in the future?
Stumbled onto your videos as I'm reacquainting myself with my old M9. For more of a Portra look (like you have in some of your early blog posts) would that be easier to achieve on the M9 with the single coated version of one of these lenses or are you better off with the multi coated and desaturating the colors in post? Love the M9 but straight out of camera the files tend to be pretty contrasty and slide film like, and I'm going for a more muted, negative film look.
Hi Matt, I’m getting an M8 this week an I’m planning to get Voigtlander 28mm or 35mm, after viewing this video I’m inclined to go with the 35 Classic S.C. How the 28mm Ultron f2 compares to the 35 on an M8 1.33 crop? Thank you
Hi Bernard, Congrats in advance on your M8! :) Did you see the M8 video? ..it tells you what 28mm and 35mm equates to on the M8. I think 28mm is a popular FL on the M8. The Ultron is nice too.. see the Voigtlander lenses video.
Thanks! I bought the 40mm SC for my M9 because i don't know the difference. I loved the lens but it has some false Justage? in the right area. So, i will get a new MC tomorrow.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yes, i snapped a mint m9 after i returned the Z6II-Computer. For me is the m9 a mix between film & digital. No other camera gives me a good feeling. P.S.: i also own the 28mm Ultron. A great lens to - but sadly a little bit to modern (renderin). Sorry for the poor english. I'm German :D
Very well done. I have for a long time the 35mm f1.4 and enjoy very much its imperfections. Combined with the imperfect c sonnar 50mm f1.5 they make a killer combo. I thought of adding the c biogon 35mm f2.8 to the mix for balance 😀, but having the already sharp as hell biogon 25mm makes it a tough decision , buying only for size? Hmmmm
Thank you Arthur! Yes agreed, the imperfections make it interesting. I used to use the Sonnar too but I stupidly sold it! Yes I love my 21/25 Biogon rendering too :)
Oh Matt, I'm still trying to get my head around this. I think I've told you before, I have the Minolta 40mm f2.8 but I would like something faster for low light photography. That's if we're ever allowed out to carry out night time low light photography! So my dilemma is caused by price! the 40mm f1.4 is a relative bargain & the 35mm f1.4 seams like a rip off in comparison. BUT, sometime in the not too distant future I'd like to treat myself to an M9 Monochrom. Which if I do I really ought to bite the bullet & buy the 35 rather than the 40mm. Doh it's très compliqué. 👍
Hi Nigel, yes 35mm is easier on RF bodies for composing but you could use a 40mm and just get used to it. Not ideal I know. That's why many people end up with both! :)
Thank you for the video. Do you prefer the Voigtlander to the Zeiss? I've read reviews going both ways, and notice that both lenses are apparently made by Cosina in Japan.
Hello. Your pictures are reaaaally nice!!! (In this review, & in all your others too) I'm new to voigtlander glasses, and want to get one for my A7RII. Which 'cheap' one would you advise me to have fun (and some sharpness)? 40 f1.4, 35 f2.5, 21 f4...other? Thx for all your work
Thanks Julien, it really depends on the look and speed you want. The new 35/40/50 1.2 lenses will be amazing and sharp, Nokton Classic 1.4 are both cheaper and more classic look (I think), 2.5 for the small size and 21mm for wides.. I did videos on all those I own if you've not seen all those. None are bad lenses but the latest 1.2 are probably optically the best.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thx a lot for your answer. I watched lots of your videos and i m stuck between the color skopar 35mm f2.5 and nokton 40 f1.4. Their weight difference don't bother me, the two are waaaay lighter than my lenses. Focal difference is no important neither cause i love both. I wonder which is more fun to use, and sharp. I m thinking tryin the 40... Excuse my english btw!! Greetings from France
@@MartinScore16 Maybe get the 40mm, being 1.4 it offers a lot more creative fun! See the 40mm MrLeica.Com blog post on the Leica tab for lots of examples. That should be enough to make you buy! :) ..same for 35mm too - many photos on blog review.
In general terms longer lenses at the same aperture will give bigger bokeh balls yes. 40mm is much better value. I bought that first but most Leica cameras are designed for 35mm lenses so people pay extra for that.
Great review as always, Matt. I just placed an order with Robert White for the f1.4 MC version for my M4-P and Fuji XT-4. Looking forward to getting out in the field with it!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom hi Matt. Arrived this morning. Beautiful lens. You mentioned that you use the entire viewfinder to compose with the 50mm frames acting as a guide. I'm guessing one gets used to judging whst will be included/excluded quite quickly.
Servus Matt✌✌ As I now also have the 1.4/40, it is therefore easy to use on the M3 as it fills almost the entire viewfinder from the image section. Lg Anderl
I was headed the direction of the 40mm Voightlander, but ended up scoring a near mint Summicron-M 40/f2 for about the same price as the new Voightlander. I have other Voightlander lenses (50 f2 APO, 35 f1.2 ASPH) and love them. Fantastic lenses.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks! I’m currently shooting with a CL and really love it. SL (or SL2) is next on the horizon for main duty, and the CL will be my street/travel choice. HI Matt, been following you for a bit now. Love your charming and understated videos and of course the beautiful bw portraits you do. I just got the itch for another 35mm-40mm lens. I have the canon ltm 35 1.8 which I think you own as well. Before I get carried away with a zeiss or a voigtlander 35 , how do you think the ltm 35 compares with these newer lenses? Btw using sony digital full frame.
Hi Renan, I’m not up to speed on Sony but if you want sharp get the Ultron 35/1.7 no question ..see that video. 1.4 is sharper than Canon I think but both are small and nice.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you Matt. The 1.7 is too big in my world of range finder lenses. Also I believe it suffers from corner smearing on sony sensor. I ll play around with the ltm this week. Also have the flektagon. It may be enough. The close focusing distance of 0.7 on the nokton 35 1.4 put me off from immediate purchase.
Love your reviews, best around !! I'm going to Buy those 40mm voigtlander lens after this review, I want it to fit my fujifilm x pro 3 and xt3, so I will have to buy the " voigtlander VM to Fujifilm X lens Adapter " ??? Yes ?? £280.00 this will be ok yes ??
If I was to buy the : leica m10 Monochrome, what would be the best for this camera ? The MC version , or the SC version ?? What would the differences be ?? Going to buy from Robert whites...
Kinda off topic question, I'm a film Leica shooter (28/50) since the switch few years back. Thinking about picking up a digital body because of a second child coming and don't think I could keep funding film at the moment. Anyways, I want to buy a body that I could still use the M glass and I plan to scan negatives with it. But from what I've read about all the full frame bodies (besides Leica of course) they don't do so well with wide angles. Because I had experience with Canon, I like the RP for being inexpensive, and small. What do you think about the RP with Leica glass? Or Sony? Thanks!
Hello, good question but I might not be the man to ask as I only use digital Leicas. Maybe look for a Sony or Fuji user that uses M glass. I know it's quite popular to do so.
Great review. Absolutely everything I needed to know about these lenses was covered, thanks so much. I'm tempted to buy the single coated version, how much of a difference in contrast are we talking about here? Is it significant? I only shoot Portra 400.
Niele160 Thanks! I prefer the MC version as I like contrast so it’s personal choice. If you like the washed out colour look then I think the SC version will help but you can do that in post too anyway.
Hi I don't have a Sony but of the 35mm vs 40mm I find the 35mm to be sharper to my eyes though not as sharp as the Voigtlander 1.2 lenses. If you want sharp get the 35/40/50 f1.2 lens instead.. Much sharper!
Thanks Garrett, I've not had chance to test those cameras i'm afraid but I bet someone has tried them on the Lumix for sure.. Google it maybe.. Interesting idea anyway :)
I have the 40mm f1.4 mc and use it on Sony A7R3 amazing lens for the price. Sharp in middle only at 1.4 (sweet spot) but as soon as you stop down it improves dramatically. IMO you shouldn't buy this kind of lens of you're a pixel peeper and demand super sharp images with little vignetting across frame wide open.
@@Boot_Ma9net Thanks, good to hear a viewpoint from a Sony shooter. yes agreed, buy this lens for the character. There are plenty of more sharp modern clinical looking lenses if people prefer that look.
Has anyone shot the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 AND the 35mm Zeiss f/2? I have the Zeiss 35mm f/2 and f/2.8. I like the 2.8 better, but wonder how people like the Voigtlander, and if it is worth it to get a faster lens. I shoot documentary photography.
Zach B yes I hear the Zeiss 2.8 is better than the f2. I will try at some point and share if I can. The Nokton 1.4 classic gives you shallow DOF, bokeh, low light potential etc whereas the Zeiss are more just sharp. They give different rendering. Compare your work to my 1.4 images here but also the 1.2 video and 2.5 Skopar video for completeness
Matt Osborne thanks for the response. I had the Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5, it was a good lens, but the filter didn’t match the kit I was building. I shoot black and white and work/travel with Yellow, UV, and Orange filters. People say the 43mm filter size on the Zeiss lenses is a strange size and doesn’t fit with a Leica system using (historically) 39mm filters. But the Zeiss designers built their system separately from the Leica lenses. The 43mm filter works perfectly as It was intended: 35/2 or f/2.8, 50/2, and 85/4 Zeiss lens kit. Great, sharp, flare-resistant, small-ish lenses. I think that I will just stick with the Zeiss 35mm f/2 lens as I don’t really shoot in low light often enough to need anything faster. If I am shooting a 2 or 3 lens kit, I like them to have a similar rendering so when I have photos from the event/trip/project next to each other, they feel like they go together. That’s why I like to pair the Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 with the Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 and not the 35mm f/2.8, as the 35mm is just too sharp and gives a different look to my eye. I almost feel like the 50/1.5 and 28/2.8 were meant to go together as they share the same filter size, and while they both make beautiful images, they aren’t as technically “perfect” as the 35/2.8 and 50/2.
Zach B yes I understand and agree. Some Leica glass can be paired in a similar way. I used to own the Zeiss 50 1.5 & f2. Both nice but especially the 1.5. I still have 21mm & 25mm Biogons.
Zach B it’s probably also worth mentioning.. I use step rings to use say 43mm filters on 39mm lens. Also to note the Nokton Classic lenses are 43mm thread.
I seriously considered the 21mm or 25mm Zeiss lenses as they are both supposed to be solid. But, I am at the point where I really want to stop spending on camera gear, maybe sell some, and be happy with what I’ve got.
Interesting video - I don't have any of those lenses but well done review. You mention it at 4:58 of your video - the typical M-mount rangefinder bokeh. I never found out why most of those lenses have the double-circle bokeh circle and not just a smooth single one. There are exemptions though - CV 35/1.2 II and Leica 50/1.5 LTM Summarit have a smooth single circle bokeh. What affects it, do you know? I am personally not a big fan of the double circle bokeh. This excluded 40 mm rangefinder lenses for me so far because they all seem to have it (not sure if the CV 40/1.2 also has it).
Thanks Martin. It may have been a slip of words but I didn’t mean to say typical bokeh. Most Leica lenses don’t have it for example, from memory, fast lenses won’t usually but Noktons yes. Typical for Nokton classics. Some busy call it distracting or busy. I’ve not checked 40 1.2 look.
I just checked 40mm Minolta f2 and it also has slight bokeh outer ring definition. On my Flickr. But Leica definitely don’t or some, 35 1.4 Lux ASPH for example.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks for your replies. All my Summicron f/2 lenses have this outer ring bokeh, and I tested once the Leica 40/2 M lens which showed it very pronounced. Wider open lenses might not suffer from it at all or as much.
Thank you for your great videos. I got the Ultron F2 version II you recommended and I love it!👍🏻 Could you compare the Nokton 35mm 1.4 Classic with the Nokton 35mm 1.4 Classic II?🙋🏻♂️
Hi Matt, I've purchased the 40mm MC version and am pretty pleased by this lille lens. I'm thinking about getting me the Canon 50mm 1,4 LTM as well but say,....Does the Voigtländer 40mm, like you said, cover a great part of the Summilux territory or do I get closer to it w. the Canon 1,4 LTM. I'm a bit worried about possibly purchasing the Canon while at the same time the Nokton already did the trick. A good copy of the Canon 1,4 LTM from Japan is commanding a whopping 300 Euros it seems. Any extra gain over the Nokton 1,4 w. this lens? I know it's probably depending on your shooting style in general but I'd like to read your opinion based on your experience though. THX in advance
Hi Theo, sorry I missed this. The Voigtlander is much more like a Summilux-M, the Canon is like a Summilux Pre-ASPH. Canon will give a different look to modern lenses and I prefer it to my my Nokton 1.4
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom - Thanks. Yeah, I saw that video first actually. You really make the Skopar sing. Maybe that comes from using it for 6+ months straight like you were forced to do. At the moment, I'm liking the Skopar best.

Thank you and great suggestion. Yes I own the CL film camera and did use the Bessa R3A with the 40mm frame lines. I've got more relaxed with age and now I use a 40mm Heliar on my 1931 Leica and estimate compositions with the fixed 50mm finder. Works great!

Really interesting review, thank you. I have the 40mm SC version and use it on Fuji bodies. I already have some great Fuji portrait lenses, including the 35 and 56, but wanted something to give a different look to black and white portraits. Thanks Greysurfer, I too have a Fuji body and have just bought the 35mm 1.4 SC. I opted for 35mm to give a standard 50mm full frame equivalent field of view. I hope this logic works out because the lens should arrive today!
@@christianpetersen1782 Your thinking seems sound to me. The SC does give nice, muted colours and also some cool flare effects with backlight.
You're welcome, pal! ;)
Hey, nice review. I'm buying the 35mm 1.4 classic now. Been on the fence but the compare/contrasting video helped 👍
Hi Mike, Thank you! Oh great happy I could help then and congrats on your new purchase!! :)
always an enjoyment to watch your videos, so helpful as a "field" photographer, I so much practical technical tricks . And I love your accent too:)
Thanks Eddie! New videos out every week.
Thank you for this video. I am getting the 40mm single coated for my Leica MP. I am a b/w shooter and I can’t wait to see the results. So excited lol.
Congrats! Yes the SC is popular for B&W, beautiful lens.

Hey Matt, great review again.
Thanks John! I've just posted another video on Voigtlander 40mm lenses :)

Question Matt: Would the 40mm ViewFinder be useless with the M8? I imagine the 40mm VF would be full frame 40…would i be better off just using the 50mm frame lines in the M8?
Hi Justin, I think yes sadly on the M8. You just have to estimate it.
Thank you so much Matt. You clear all my doubts. I have both 35 and 40 1.4
Thanks Jose!
Could you tell me if the bokeh on 40 is similar to that on 35? I’m looking for soap bubble bokeh
@@SiddhantParkar My personal appreciation is 40mm 1.4
@@JoseRamirez-cd7ge do you think the soap bubble is more pronounced on the 35 ?
Thanks for this vid; just bought a used 40mm 1.4 Classic MC. 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Ad, great little lens!
This was very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks Nathan! I have since reviewed the 35/1.2, 40/1.2 and others if you are interested. See the lens playlists for more videos.
Good luck!
I use the 35mm version on my M8. But mine does not say SC so must be multi coated, but does say F1.4 II.
Yes mine are not marked and are the MC versions. (Yours sounds like the newer MC version).
As has been observed, "thrift is a great virtue, especially in an ancestor".
yes!
Got the 40mm f/1.4 classic for my Minolta CLE ; works great.
Nice combo Stuart!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Presumably the 40/1.2 would have an even more shallow DoF than 35/1.2 at minimal focus distance. :)
[test with M10 mono]
The results are t f2 are in terms of shares tested in the very corners :
1-Voigt Lanthar,
2-Voigt f 1.5,
3-Voigt f 1.2 V. III,
4-Summicron ASPH (close though),
5-Summicron Bokeh (slightly softer in the corners but sort of holding on in spite of its age),
6-TTartisan (very soft corners).
Even at f. 1.5 and with its compactness this lens competes with the Summicron ASPH at f. 2. Great lens!! My only regret is that Voigtlander removed the small physical red dot/dome on the lens itself which was present on the previous lenses.
Thanks Bruno! I got your email too, many thanks
I wonder if the 40mm lens would be good for portraits on a Panasonic G9 with the 2x crop sensor. 80mm could be nice.
Hi Jesse, i'm sure it would! I use it on crop bodies (M8 and CL but i've not tried M4/3 recently). I used it a lot on M4/3 in the past but I did mostly macro then.
Great video, as always. Do you describe anyplace how you scan your film? All my best, keep it up...
Thanks Chris! Yes the blog has 7 years of reviews on it so most things covered to some degree! :)
This might help you until I get chance to make a scanning video - mrleica.com/film-negatives-to-digital-workflow/
I'm considering Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 vs Voigtlander Ultron 35mm f1.7
Would love to hear your opinion
@@Loewe-7 Hi sorry i've not tried the 1.7 yet. If I get chance I will be sure to share my thoughts!

Thank you! Next video hopefully out later today / tomorrow 😊👍🏻
thanks for the review, you made a great job. I've already watched almost all your videos and didn't find the review about voigtlander ultron 35mm f2. You find this lens not interesting for your purpose or just planning to review it in the future?
Hi Jean thanks, yes I hope to test it when I get time but it probably won’t be yet as I have other lenses coming first.
Yes the M9 files are punchy out of camera for sure. SC lens should reduce that look a little or just do it in post. Either will work.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Well, each to his own! Take care.
Yes both made in same factory, I use both, see my Zeiss videos. Zeiss Biogons are excellent but I like Voigtlander too
Hello.
Your pictures are reaaaally nice!!! (In this review, & in all your others too)
I'm new to voigtlander glasses, and want to get one for my A7RII.
Is the soap bubble bokeh more pronounced on the 35 than it is on the 40? I like how the 35 looks but it’s almost twice as expensive neo

HI Matt, been following you for a bit now. Love your charming and understated videos and of course the beautiful bw portraits you do. I just got the itch for another 35mm-40mm lens.
Thanks for asking, I see you found the MRLEICACOM code per your other message,
Kinda off topic question, I'm a film Leica shooter (28/50) since the switch few years back.
HELLO YOU WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND ME FOR IMAGE QUALITY AND SHARPNESS? I HAVE TO MOUNT IT ON SONY A7RII
Hi I don't have a Sony but of the 35mm vs 40mm I find the 35mm to be sharper to my eyes though not as sharp as the Voigtlander 1.2 lenses. If you want sharp get the 35/40/50 f1.2 lens instead.. Much sharper!
Did you have a chance to try 35mm Vintage Ultron F2? I saw some tests on internet and from pictures it performs amazing
Hi sorry not yet. These are all lenses I own. If I do in the future I will share my thoughts no problem.
when you put the 40mm lens on a leica M2,which frames do they appear ? the 35mm or the 50mm ??
I can’t remember as I normally use the M3 and the full VF for 40mm compositions. If I get the chance to check I’ll leave a comment
Very good review, thank you. I will buy 40 mm fo my Sony A7
Thanks for checking out the vid! Yes you can sometimes get deals on Amazon or eBay
MC or SC for great black and white photography ??
Most people say SC for B&W as lower contrast but I use MC lenses
How would these resolve on a 47 mp sensor? Like the SL2 or LUMIX S1R? Love your reviews
I got the Ultron F2 version II you recommended and I love it!👍🏻
Could you compare the Nokton 35mm 1.4 Classic with the Nokton 35mm 1.4 Classic II?🙋🏻♂️
Thanks Robin, they are probably too similar to be worth testing. If you shoot digital get v2 but v1 is fine for me for film and digital.

Please let me know how you calibrate the Voigtlander lenses to Leica M cameras.
Hi Dan, not required. All M mount lenses whether Zeiss Voigtlander etc all work on Leica out the box.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks. So do Leica lenses and yet there is often a need for calibration. I* really love your articles. Thanks
@@danbar4211 Hi Dan, no extremely rare to need to calibrate.. occasionally old Soviet lenses or maybe if you get a bad copy of a lens but I return it if not sharp straight away.
Does the 40mm work with the M246?
Yes any M camera, no problem 👍🏻
Self inflicted 😂👍🏻 good luick ✌🏻
Thanks Bruno! I think it will be a busy week! :S :)
have u ever tried to attach these 2 lenses on fujifilm??
Hello, sorry I've not. I'm sure many have, check Flickr images or other RUclipsrs perhaps.
Can I use a 40mm for my m3 and then use the whole viewfinder screen for 40mm without using googles like when using a 35mm on a m3?
Pocket Coaching hello yes, just make sure you remember it’s 40mm though! Sounds obvious but last time I did that I forgot and used the 50mm visible framelines! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom im thinking about buying a m3 with a 40mm or a m2 with a 35mm..... but I read everywhere that the m3 has a magical viewfinder and that its so much better than m2 and newer models! Which option would you recommend in this case?
Pocket Coaching M3 is my best film camera ..of many! (M2 good if a 35mm shooter). I’m
Not usually but I do have one
Still on the fence which one to buy I hear great thongs about the 35 is it worth the extra , cheers in advance
davejenx the main thing about the 35 is common framelines. It is a tiny bit shaped as I remember but not much in it
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom cheers mate I'm not bothered about the frame lines in fact it will probably help as so many times I've missed half a shoe or elbow. I heard the out of focus rendering is really good on the 35 if it's the same I'll save some dosh and get the 40
And thanks for responding
davejenx 👍🏻
davejenx thanks Dave, I would say see mr MrLeica.com blog posts in the Leica menu, see the review for each and check the rendering inn the many examples. I don’t think I’ve noticed a difference between them. Hopefully it can save you a few pounds!
¡Excellente video!
Thanks!
40 is very bad deal for me, i cant buy 50 anymore if i has 40. I prefer 50, 21 fast lens and 28-35 pancake class
Yes not everyone likes 40mm
Boy oh boy i don't even know how many versions there are of this obnoxious lens! Mine looks completely different than that in your review... one with very very strange looking lens hood on screw, heavy as a brick, big with COMPLETELY useless focal metering, and the image... my GOD the image is so blurry at any apertures, with hateful nervous bokeh, plenty of purple fringing, tons of vignetting, ABSOLUTE lack of sharpness no matter what, TOTALY impossible to use with zone focusing technique and with price tag of 600+ Euro! I hate this lens more than the words can describe it!
It sounds like you have a lens designed for a different camera but with the same name.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom mine is for E mount! Voightlander 35mm F1.4 for E mount and i was so hating it on my A6400, but then tried it on A7III and it is better there! I will "live" with this lens... i am starting to "understand" this lens with time
@@dennycouncil2282 it’s quite soft anyway but yes it can be fun with practice
