This has been my favorite lens ever since I accidentally bought a camera that was bundled with it. At first I thought the Ultron 35 f/2 is going to be my fav but little did I know Nokton blows me away with the characters!
I had this lens for a couple of years with my M9 and I struggled a bit with it, likely due to the lack of accurate frame lines and the fact that at 40mm I felt I wanted to get closer than the MFD would allow, so I sold it and got the Zeiss 50 Planar instead. If I get a Pixii it's likely I will pick it back up again since the 58/60mm equivalent focal length is closer to the more portrait aspect I prefer.
This lens is very competent and modern at F2 but has a boost mode to go to 1.4 with a little vintage glow. Bokeh is more of the classic slightly busy Planar style which I actually like. Plenty of contrast too. There are two versions: multi-coated (MC) and a more vintage styled single-coated (SC). Choose the later if you are a B+W shooter who like a little halo glow to your photos, otherwise get the MC for color work.
Mattias, I love the conciseness of your gear reviews. I own this lens, for the 2nd time. The first time it came with my Minolta CLE and I sold it as a combo. No I have it again and use it exclusively on my Leica M240 and my Fujifilm X-Pro3 along with the Color Skopar 21mm. I’ve come to really like how this lens renders both colour and black and white. You can’t go wrong with it. Now you have me very interested in the PIXII. Who knows what they future will bring.
The Mattias withdrawal has been much too long…😅. Happy to you & family are doing well. I love this 40mm focal length on my Typ 262, CL(film) & Epson RD1. Interestingly, the CL has a 40mm frame line ☺️. Regardless, it is a wonderful compact lens that produces beautiful images-tho, not as beautiful as your images 😖. ✌🏼& 📸
40mm is very close to a full frame sensor diagonal. When someone says 50mm is "normal" don't believe them 😜 I noticed that it's a very convenient focal length when I borrowed an SLR with 40mm several years ago.
Absolutely beautiful shots. I have a 40mm f1.2 on my M (probably too big for a Pixi) and I think it is a magical focal length and an endlessly surprising lens with magical subject separation.
I own the very same lens for a couple of years now and really dig it. Once, in a cafe, I dropped the camera on the floor. Fortunately I had the vented hood installed. It's a cheap hood that came w. my cheap Pergear 25mm aps-c lens. Since it is made out of aluminum the hood was severely bent but the lens was perfectly OK and untouched. You can ebay such a lens hood for under 10 Euros. I prefer aluminum or even plastic since rather than stiff metal, these materials do cushion the lens and camera during the impact. And plastic is light which I like.
I run this lens on my Sony with a helicoid adapter (really helps with portraits and macro). It's perfectly sharp in the middle at f2. Love, love, love this lens.
I bought this two years ago when I acquired a M3. It was $100 off. I was thinking this would be a stop gap until I could afford a good 50mm but honestly I love what I am getting out of this lens and I don't see any reason to switch over to anything else. I wish the M3 had 40mm lines but honestly it is not a big deal, anything I want in my frame I just make sure lives within the 50 lines.
All cameras throughout history have worked the same way. Without “equivalent”. Like any other camera you use the frame guide for the lens you have mounted on the camera 👍
Another great video and great photos. I'm on the fence about the lens but have a question about the size and brightness of the pixii vs xpro3 viewfinder. Can you have any insight?
Thank you for the review. Do you have the multi-coated or single-coated version of the lens? Any specific reasons why you chose one or the other. Thanks.
Great review Mattias! Thank you for presenting this combo. One question I have is, for the rangefinder frame guide in the Pixi, for 40mm means full frame 40mm, right? So in reality you have a depth of field of 60mm, right?
The 40mm Nokton is a great little lens. On the outside it looks just like the 35mm Nokton. I had the 40mm and the 35mm V1 which I used with an M8. The 40mm was excellent but the 35mm was a dog. That's probably why Voigtlander released a 35mm V2 but didn't need to with the 40mm. Mine were multicoated (MC) and there's also a single coated version (SC) for each model.
You can buy Haoge LH-ZV02 squared metallic lens hood that fits not only this lens but also zeiss planar 2/50mm and 35mm nokton. I think I'm gonna get this lens finally too. I even got the lens hood for it:D
I love the 40mm focal length and how the pixii is dealing with community. Your pictures are always a pleasure to watch. A question, does this camera have a crop factor? Is the 40mm really a 40 or cropped to 60?
All your different images are really gorgeous mate, really lovely !! 👍👍 (By the by, hv u done a vid on the Pixcie (?) camera ? It looks really compact and very carry-able; even in a hoodie ?! )
My wife just gifted me a Pixii for my birthday. Is this the 40mm lens to get if I wanted to start off my journey? The only other Leica-M mount lens I have is the 90 mm f/2.8.
Great video about a beautiful lens. Thanks ! And, on your pixii camera, the lens become a 60mm with the frameline of a 40mm ? I don't understand the how it is possible...
So, it's ~60mm on the Pixii's APS-C sensor? I wish so much that Pentax would release a 1-inch or APS-C version of the MX-1 with an m-mount to keep the small form factor without needing adapters and massive lenses (relatively speaking). Or even if Nikon would release another S3 styled camera using updated Nikon 1 hardware with a new firmware that includes for enthusiast features. Same 1 inch sensor, same lenses with maybe a limited run 18.5mm 1.8 with matching styling (50mm equivalent). I love the Q's/MX-1 and I quite like the Nikon 1 J5 and V3 cameras, the small sensor size doesn't bother me at all (I have MFT, APS-C, and Full frame covered...I just enjoy carrying about my MX-1 or J5). Having another rangefinder styled tiny camera would be a lot of fun, and the system is there to recycle before properly burying it. People would complain about old specs I guess, sad day.
If you compare how much you get into the picture (angle in degrees) then this on APS is like 60mm on FF or 30mm on MFT. But the focal length is still 40mm and the frame lines in the viewfinder should take that into account.
Hi Mattias! I learned about the Pixii camera thanks to your reviews. After some months of thinking about it, I pounced this week and I will be receiving the camera in Argentina in May. I have leica r lenses, a 28 mm f2.8 and 50 mm f2 that I will use with a Leica R adapter-M. In a second phase I might get this 40 mm Voigtlander. Did you get the multicoated version or the single coated version? Love your videos! Always a pleasure to watch. Best regards from Argentina!
You may already know the answer to your question, but from what I read, single coating is more for B&W photography and the multicoating for color. I have the MC version and I really love it
@@vega35mm Hi M V, thank you very much!! Yes, I learned later that the SC is intended for monochrome, so yes, I'll go with the MC version. But first, I need to get the Pixii which is still being built in France and then try the lenses I already have. Thanks again! best regards!
I love the 35mm (or equivalent) and i love the 50mm (or equivalent), but i can't manage something inbetween. Tried three modells on three systems and i'm always too close or too far, can't compose with layers, or with lines. It's always miss, never hit for me.
having never tried one, i thought 40 was a real weird focal length (too wide compared to the 50, weird compared to the 35) BUT i do want to try it out now, especially for more 'landscape-like' shots!
it's actually super close to the human eye's "natural" focal length(keep in mind the human eye isn't at all equivalent to a camera sensor), so images shot with it have a very natural look
The Pixii works just like all other cameras throughout history. You choose the guide for the lens you are using. Cameras don’t care about “equivalence”.
I think I just missed that completely. Several years ago I thought about buying a Bessa R. The one with the highest magnification viewfinder had 40mm frame lines and this lens would be a perfect match.
I had this lens for few months then sold it.. my TT artisan have similar image or may be a bit better (to my eye).. no point to spend more when I can get better with cheaper lens
I am not a lover of the Voightlander lenses for landscapes, there is this artificialness in the lens rendering of the natural features such as trees, leaves, etc that I see in the 21 and 35 mm lenses I have and I see that same type of rendering in this 40mm lens. On the other hand I feel that portraits tend to be a strong point of Voightlander lenses and I feel they give a natural rendering providing a beautiful shading to create a true likeness of form and texture. That’s my experience with my Leica 240.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter True, you have a point! however, I have seen many pictures from other reviews (from you) that have far more sharpness. It was no cocky or negative thing intended. I enjoy your view and YT movies. So it was an honest question. Have a great one from me.

I brought this lens 4 weeks back and it has become my favourite focal length! Voigtlander are the best value for money.

It’s amazing how these lenses are so good, yet so cheap!
Tak, Mattias! Good to hear you again. Looks like Krut has competition for "boss model" at your house. Congratulations!
Lovely to see a picture of GP in this one. ❤️

I have the 35mm version of this (Single Coated) and love it. Superb on my m8
I was happy with this lens but I'm in love with the f1.2 version. That 40mm almost never leaves my A7iii.

Stunning images! I got addicted to 40 mm lenses, way back ago, when I bought my first Minolta CLE and growing into Leica M4P. Adore the focal length.
Love the fact you show beautiful images with your camera gear than go into the specs 🤓
Absolutely love this lens as well. I'm more and more convinced that a 40mm might be the perfect focal length for me if I can only choose one lens.
38-43mm is definitely a great all round range for me. Either that or a wider 28mm.

My 40 1.4 literally lives on my RD-1, such a great everyday combination!
Do you guesstimate the frame lines for the 40mm?
Was thinking about you yesterday. Hope everything is going well with the family.

All cameras throughout history have worked the same way. Without “equivalent”. Like any other camera you use the frame guide for the lens you have mounted on the camera 👍
That lens looks like a keeper.
I have the SC version of this lens, and I absolutely love it
I've been using the SC (Single Coasting) version of this for years. It's excellent
Cosina, the company that makes Voigtlanders lenses, also produced some of Zeiss' lenses. Voigtlander glass is a really good value.
